What is your educational background? I have a very broad educational background that’s kind of hard to categorize – I think I have “intellectual ADHD.” I have a liberal arts BA from the College of Wooster, a MA in Comparative Studies in Humanities from Ohio State (which involved the interdisciplinary/comparative study of philosophy, history, political science, economics, and anthropology), and I have a PhD in Comparative Religion from Western Michigan University. For my PhD I studied the psychology of religious behavior. And finally, I have a General Securities license (Series 66 and Series 7) in finance and investing.

My first job ever was working the drivethrough window at Rax Roast Beef. But my first “real” job was as an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Findlay (2002 – 2005). Then I became an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Webster University in St. Louis and eventually Department Chair (2005-2008). Then I worked as a Financial Advisor with the firm of Edward Jones in Columbus, OH (2008-2009). Most recently, I was the Academic Dean at Southwestern College in Toledo (2009).

How long have you been teaching for Tiffin? Less than one day (at the time of the interview)!
What courses do you teach? Which do you enjoy teaching the most? I will be teaching a variety of DCP courses, and I am certain that I will like them all. If I had to choose, I would probably choose Motivational Psychology, History of the Middle East, Organizational Behavior, or Ethics.
What are your interests and hobbies? I play guitar and sing in a band (right now we’re calling ourselves “The Blue Dogs” but that may change tomorrow). I also love sports (Ohio State football and all Cleveland pro teams) and boating.
What advice do you have for students who are studying in the BA program? Try to apply everything you are studying in your classes to your personal and/or professional life. That way you will get the most value out of your education. And, maybe more importantly, learn to ENJOY your educational experiences instead of seeing your education as just a bunch of busy work you have to get through before the good life starts. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”
Attention All MAY Graduates Commencement is the culmination of your hard work. Saturday, May 1, 2010 is commencement on the TU main campus. All Degree Completion students who are able to take that important walk are encouraged to attend the ceremonies. Seated students will have their cap and gown delivered to them by their academic advisor; while, online students will have their cap and gown mailed to them. Cap and gowns should be received around the third week of April. Between the second and third weeks of March, a letter will be sent out relaying information about the day of graduation, the time and the location. Included, you should also find tickets to graduation for your family members. If you need extra tickets you may ask fellow classmates. In order for us to order your cap and gown from the bookstore, please send an email to your advisor by February 15, 2010 with the following information: Last Name, Middle Initial, First Name Home Address Height Weight

New Refund Policy Effective Saturday, January 9, 2010 the refund policy for the Degree Completion Program changed. The new refund policy is outlined below: Refund Policy: The following is the refund amount for Degree Completion students who withdraw: Before the start of the course 100% Refund During the first calendar week 50% Refund During the second calendar week 25% Refund After the second calendar week No Refund A medical withdrawal is a 100% refund, but a written request must be submitted by the student along with verification from a physician. Students receiving federal financial aid should read the Return of Federal Financial Aid Policy Title IV Funds below.
To all returning and new students for the 2010-2011 academic year: Tiffin University will be going from a FELP lending school to a Direct Lending school. This means that if you are a returning student and have a lender other then Direct Lending, you will have to switch to Direct Lending and complete a new Master Promissory Note. If you are a new student to Tiffin University, you will have Direct Lending as your lender. If you have had Direct Lending in the past, you will not have to complete another MPN with Tiffin. If you have not ever used Direct Lending, then you will have to complete the Master Promissory Note. All students can complete the MPN by going to the following website https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/index.jsp
Return of Federal Financial Aid Title IV Refund Policy: Title IV funds include, but are not limited to Federal Pell Grant, Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, Federal PLUS loans and Additional Unsubsidized Student Loans. For federal financial aid purposes, a student who completes at least one course in a module and then withdraws is not considered to have withdrawn. However, because the student failed to begin attendance in the number of credit hours for which the Federal Aid was awarded, the institution must recalculate the student’s eligibility for aid based on a revised cost of education and enrollment. Disbursed loans may remain intact after the student’s eligibility has been calculated based on the reduced cost of attendance. Loans that have not been disbursed may not be available to the student. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information if you have questions pertaining to the Title IV Refund Policy.

chronological order with a progressive thought pattern. It is vital for writers to really know what message they want to convey in their writing. Writers must be able to communicate their message in such a way that the reader will be able to clearly conceptualize the writer’s intent. In order to successfully compose a paper, the writer should complete the following basic tasks before getting started: Develop a writing plan, outline the plan, and then begin! When developing a writing plan the writer should remain focused on the true purpose of their writing. Remember, you are attempting to persuade or dissuade the reader of something. It is a good idea to take notes, use a recorder to capture your thoughts (good for spontaneous brainstorming sessions), and even discuss your thoughts with someone else. The writing plan should also serve as a guide to establish specific goals, objectives, and timelines which will assist you with staying on task. An outline provides direction and serves as a reminder of what you want to discuss throughout the writing. An outline should break down the parts of your writing in a clear and hierarchical manner. Further, an outline will help simplify and organize your ideas in a logical form. The very beginning of your paper can sometimes be the most challenging part of your writing. However, keep in mind that you want to take your reader logically from beginning to end in the most efficient manner. Your paper should include an introduction that explains your central theme, the body of the paper which highlights your theme, a summary, where you restate the problem or issue, what’s been said about it, and then a conclusion. Most importantly, be creative, expressive, and forthright in your writing.
VETERAN BENEFITS The main purpose for Tiffin University’s Office of Veteran Affairs is to assist veteran students in receiving VA benefits. This office ensures that the proper paperwork is filled out, certified, and filed with the VA so that payment dispersal can begin. Veteran Affairs Certifying Official: Andrea Faber is the Certifying Official at Tiffin University. Andrea has worked for Tiffin University since 2004. The duties of the Certifying Official include certifying government paperwork for those receiving, or those who are eligible for, VA benefits. Andrea attends VA workshops regularly and also stays in contact with VA officials. Veteran Benefits: The GI Bill is a benefit that is paid to eligible veterans or reservists of the United States Armed forces. There are several different chapters under which a veteran may receive benefits. These chapters are listed below. Also, please be aware that the VA determines eligibility for receiving benefits. Note about Transfer Credits:
Are you completing your degree soon?
Transfer credits will be granted for courses from other regionally accredited institutions and from business schools accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools provided the courses carry a minimum grade of “C”. If you have taken course work at another college and would like to receive transfer credit, you must have an official transcript sent to: Office of Degree Completion Admissions 155 Miami Street Tiffin, OH 44883
If so, make sure that everything is in order with the Financial Aid office so you won’t be delayed in receiving your diploma. If you have received Federal loans while enrolled at TU, you will need to complete “exit counseling.” This is a requirement for graduation and must be completed. Please visit https://tunet.tiffin.edu/ics/Admissions/Financial_Aid/ Student_Loan_Counselling.jnz, and click the second option, Exit Counseling.
Renew your FAFSA: You are now able to file your 2010-2011 FAFSA. As soon as you have completed and filed your 2009 Federal Tax Return, you should file your FAFSA for the new academic year. To complete your FAFSA, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will also need your Federal PIN. If you don’t remember your PIN, you can request a new one at www.pin.ed.gov. It is important that you enter Tiffin University’s school code, 003121, prior to submitting the FAFSA.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT Yaw Mamphey has been the Coordinator of Admissions Operations for the Degree Completion program since 2008. Most recently, Yaw graduated with a master’s degree in Business Administration which has and continues to serve him well both personally and professionally. “As an alumnus of Tiffin University, I encourage students, including DCP graduates, to consider the graduate programs offered at Tiffin University when searching for graduate schools. REACCREDITATION VISIT SCHEDULED AT TIFFIN UNIVERSITY Tiffin University will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit March 22-24, 2010, by a team representing The Higher Learning Commission of The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Tiffin University has been accredited by the Commission since 1983. Its accreditation is at the Master’s degree level and includes degree sites at various other locations within the state, internationally, as well as online programs. The public is invited to submit comments regarding the University to: Public Comment on Tiffin University The Higher Learning Commission 30 North LaSalle Street, Suite 2400 Chicago, IL 60602 Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. Written, signed comments must be received by February 15, 2010. The Commission cannot guarantee that comments received after the due date will be considered.
