It is a model that has been sustainable for ten years, and ECBE has commended TU for its foresight and the high quality of its programs. A formal presentation of the accreditation award was made during ECBE’s Annual General Meeting in May 2013. The SSC is the place to be….for study tables, tutoring, research helps, workshops, and a myriad of other great academic support opportunities. Rolling out this week will be 3 exciting new programs designed to aid students in courses with traditionally difficult content, including those courses that many times serve as ‘barrier’ courses for students, preventing them from progressing to the next level of study. These are: PAL (peer-assisted learning) is a non-mandatory, very interactive and productive (and fun!) academic support opportunity for students in many of the English courses, chemistry, biology, history, calculus, possibly languages, and other areas with difficult content. PALs will attend the course and then run interactive, engaging sessions outside of the course time. These will be run by students who have previously taken the course successfully who can share different ways to learn the concepts, vocabulary, etc. and be successful in the course. PASS (peer-assisted study sessions) will be for courses with difficult/challenging content but that do not have a PAL. These will be run for courses such as culture, econ, upper level English, JUS 201 and 202, MKT 151, PHI classes, POL 101, PSY 101 and SOC 101. We will also provide these for the education courses to assist education majors with their seated courses. These will also be run by students who have previously taken the course successfully who can share different ways to learn the concepts, vocabulary, etc. and be successful in the course. They just won’t attend the actual class this term, but will be in contact with the instructors for information updates and content suggestions. Power Hour is like tutor-aided study hall. This is for each of the math and computer science courses as well as accounting at almost all levels. This is designed for students to go to the room, work on their assignments, and when they have a question, ask the facilitator/tutor a question right then. These will be offered throughout the day in various locations, hoping to accommodate many more students than have been helped in the past. Please see pages 15-18 for sessions throughout the week. Attendance will be taken for data purposes only (study table credit, SSC data, etc.). Just a reminder: data compiled here at TU and around the country overwhelmingly shows a minimum of an indirect connection between PAL/ PASS/POWER HOUR attendance and an increase in grades. A couple of other reminders: Please remember if you make a permanent appointment, you need to attend the appointment each week. Two missed appointments will cause these to be cancelled for the term. Students can make an appointment for tutoring without making a weekly permanent appointment. If you need to cancel, please notify the SSC desk as soon as possible. Due to the increased traffic in the SSC, please try very hard to speak in a quiet voice during appointments, etc. in order to keep the noise levels at a minimum Students logging in for study table hours need to remember that Facebook, watching movies (except for class), sleeping, talking, using a cell phone, etc. do not count for study table hours. Finally, we would like to give a quick shout out to Graduate Assistant Andrew Dean, Grad students Anthony Dean and Jessica Huffman, as well as all of the other facilitators and tutors that are working together to make this incredible academic support undertaking a go. Your help and support has been greatly appreciated by the SSC Director, faculty, and students alike

TU Observes 9/11 TU’s 9/11 observation ceremony embodied its slogan “Never Forget. Never Surrender.” Not only were the events of that day in 2001 commemorated, but those who have sacrificed in service of the country were also remembered and thanked. Chisholm Auditorium in Franks Hall offered standing room only for the ceremony planned by TU’s Student Veterans Organization and H20 Ministries. Tyler Todd, Vice President of the Student Veterans Organization, talked about where he was on 9/11, thanked the service men and women, and cited statistics of those involved in the wars that came after that day. Barb Cook and Dawn Woodings, both of whom belong to two chapters in Ohio of the Blue Star Mothers organization, also spoke. The ceremony was concluded with the singing of the national anthem by the TU Choir while the flag was raised from its position at half-staff outside near TU's Main classroom building.

Football Despite a relentless rushing attack by Michigan Tech, Tiffin University (0-2, 0-1 GLIAC) hung with the Huskies until the final quarter, when 19 fourth-quarter points sent the Huskies to a solid 40-14 victory in TU's GLIAC opener. Both teams traded possessions early, until Michigan Tech finally put together a 7 play, 78 yard drive that ended with a 15 yard TD run by Charlie Leffingwell at 3:43 of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. The Dragons wasted little time responding, however, as Tony Shead took the ensuing kickoff and exploded for an 85 yard kick return for a score that made it 7-7 at the 3:30 mark. Both defenses continued to battle, as no one scored until Tyler Scarlett hit Jordan McConnell on 4th and 3 for a 16 yard touchdown pass with just 58 seconds remaining in the half to take a 14-7 lead at the break. The Dragons opened the third quarter in fine fashion, taking a Huskies fumble and turning it into a quick score in 5 plays covering 32 yards when Antonio Pipkin rushed it in from 1 yard out for the score. The drive was highlighted by Joey Frendo's 26 yard completion to Jeremy Armstrong on 4th and 5 that took TU down to the one yard line. At the 12:32 mark, the score stood at 14-14. Michigan Tech responded on its

its strong ground game and the power running of Leffingwell. Cole Welch banged it home from one yard out to make it 21-14 at 9:40 of the third quarter. Leffingwell had 33 carries for 192 yards, and the Huskies finished off a 60 yard drive in 6 plays with 14:25 left to play when Welch ran in another score from the one yard line. Leffingwell finished his day strong, gaining 83 yards in the second half and capping it off with a 19 yard TD scamper with 8:37 left. The Dragons drove 52 yards on their next possession and were threatening to score when Frendo's pass was picked off by Jeremy Mims at the Huskies 5 yard line. Mims never looked back, returning it 95 yards for the game's final score. Overall Michigan Tech outgained TU 491-240, including a big 25932 advantage on the ground. They had 26 first downs to Tiffin's 11 and held a 11 minute edge in time of possession. Jeremy Armstrong had 5 receptions for 82 tough yards, while Jacob Schneider also had 55 yards receiving on 4 catches. Frendo finished 20 for 38 with 2 interceptions for 203 yards. He was also sacked twice. Jerry Brown led the ground game with 41 yards on 10 carries.

Men's Soccer Tiffin University (3-1, 1-1 GLIAC) scored two late goals to force overtime but came up just short in their bid for victory, allowing a goal in the 104th minute to fall 32 to Ohio Dominican in double overtime. Trailing 2-0 with just 8 minutes left, TU mounted a comeback. Ryan Johnstone beat the defense and drilled a shot home to bring TU to within 2-1 in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later, Karl Jones took a cross and tied the score in dramatic fashion, sending the game to overtime. Both teams battled through a scoreless first overtime before the Panthers headed home a free kick to the right side of the goal and win the game. The two teams tied with 17 shots apiece while the Dragons held a 8 -3 edge in corner kicks. Jeremy Ashley took the loss in goal, making 5 saves over 104 minutes.
