2018 ASPIRE RECOGNITION AWARDS BETWEEN LANDSEC AND OUR SERVICE PARTNERS, WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SO MANY HARDWORKING INDIVIDUALS WITH SUCH A WIDE ARRAY OF TALENTS. IT’S AN OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT THAT WE HAVE NOT JUST MAINTAINED OUR UNRIVALLED STANDARDS OF CUSTOMER SERVICE BUT HAVE CONTINUED TO IMPROVE. It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without Aspire also improving together as a single, united team. It’s been a great year, with more to celebrate than ever before! With that in mind, it’s now less than a month until the 2018 Aspire Recognition Awards are upon us. With six categories, each reflecting our Aspire Values and several nominees for each, every single vote counts.

Whether it’s a small act of kindness, heroic action or outstanding work throughout the entire year, you and your colleagues deserve to be recognised for going that extra bit further. Voting closes on Tuesday 20th November so we hope to see lots of people getting involved over the coming weeks.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU RESPECT FOR SECURITY It’s not just up to members of security to keep sites safe and secure. If every Aspire member has at least a basic understanding of security, then this could help to prevent potential incidents in the future.

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY TO VICTORIA

O

n 2nd December, NJC staff will don bushy white beards and red Santa outfits for this year’s famous London Santa Run. The Aspire members will join thousands of others in the beautiful Victoria Park for what is sure to be one the biggest charity events of the season. Amongst those running will be Jason Edwards, Charles Walden, Russell Southern and Francisca Cumbicus (above), all are keen members of the

AspireHarriers. Now that regular Harrier meetings have ended for the year, they will surely be eager to stretch their legs on the big day. All money raised will go directly to The Honeypot Children’s Charity to help them hand deliver a present to every Honeypot Child as part of their Christmas Road Show. Business Support Administrater Lauren Hall commented ‘we hope that the money we raise will give many Honeypot children a special Christmas’.

The recent Aspire Security Awareness training day was designed to highlight some of the key threats that the team might face on a day-to-day basis, especially those that might be overlooked. As new potential threats continue to emerge and safety regulations continue to improve, it is important that everyone stays informed on procedures. With this in mind, it was very reassuring to see such a collective response with 39 members in attendance, including representatives of all Landsec’s service partners. We hope that everyone benefitted from this training day and that it will lead to safer, more secure workplaces for everyone.

To help NJC reach their £500 target, please don’t hesitate to donate at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/aspireharriers

ASPIRE KICKS OFF THE GIVING SEASON As the Aspire Gifts of Christmas event was such a success last year, the team has decided to get people in the giving spirit by hosting another raffle for this holiday season. Landsec and their service partners will be purchasing £75 vouchers from the likes of John Lewis, M&S, Pizza Express, Amazon and Love2Shop. Each raffle ticket will be sold at £2 and the winners will be drawn and announced in December, just in time for some lucky Aspire members to receive an early Christmas gift. All proceeds from the raffle will go towards the Honeypot Children’s Charity, which continues to provide invaluable support for disadvantaged children and young carers 365 days a year. To help show your support for this great cause and for the chance to win one of our festive prizes, look out for tickets being sold at a site near you.

hile every member of security at One New Change is willing to go above and beyond, there is one Aspire member who has been exceptional all year round. For Security Service Site Manager Kamil Kotlarz, of Corps Security, there seems to be no end to his achievements. He has become highly respected not only by his colleagues but also by the City of London Police and members of the fire brigade. On multiple occasions, he has stopped thieves, intervened in suicide attempts and has offered

valuable advice on advanced safety measures to fellow Aspire members across London. He has even taken it upon himself to prepare new procedures to combat more modern security threats, such as the use of illegal drones. He has carried out extensive research on such risks and continues to educate the rest of the team as much as possible. For his exceptional efforts and taking the initiative at every opportunity, Kamil has been nominated by General Manager Andy Slatter for a Player of the Month Award in Excellence.

Gani Gjeta proved that he was more than up to the task recently at 20 Eastbourne Terrace when he noticed a young girl wandering around the onsite car park. She was alone at the time and looked as though she was lost and confused. Gani wasted no time, speaking to the girl and asking if she was ok. The girl had some difficulty communicating in English, but Gani was still quickly able to understand that she had lost her parents.

ased just a short walk away from Nova and 80-100 Victoria Street, Portland House stands proud as the tallest building on the Cardinal Place estate, as much a landmark for commuters as it is for Aspire members. Of Portland House’s 29 floors, all but one are occupied by Landsec customers. The Aspire team is based on the ground floor, providing the foundation for everything that happens onsite. With a whole range of customers on the higher levels, such as Direct Ferries Ltd and KSL Capital Partners, it’s no surprise that the ground floor can become extremely busy for the Aspire team. With stylish reception areas on either side of the building, the first facing out to Victoria Street and the other towards the market stalls and thoroughfares of Cardinal Place, the Aspire team has ample space to manage the varying needs of customers and guests.

Portland House, Victoria.

Anyone who has visited Portland House is sure to have met Security Guard Vincent Cofie. Known to most as ‘Vince’ (or even ‘Vincey’), he has become something of a legend since he first began in January 2017. Even though there is usually only one member of security covering both reception areas, Vince is still happy to take on extra responsibilities, from cleaning spillages to dealing with customer complaints. He does all of this with a constant smile on his face, as he and the rest of the team believe that a positive attitude is best in every situation. Another member of the front of house team is Christina Sillah who claims to have ‘felt right at home’ since she began working on reception just over 13 months ago. Alongside fellow Aspire members Mary Lawal and Grace Lovelace, Christina welcomes every person who steps through the doors of Portland House with a smile, even while dealing with the hundreds of other requests she receives each day. With the Aspire team generally operating on a single floor, the group have got to know each other really closely. Despite the hundreds of customers based throughout the building, Vince comments that ‘it never really feels like work when we’re all working TogetherAsOne.’

Grace Lovelace. 8

@AspireAsOne

Hazel Ozulku reflects on life at Portland House. As busy as the two receptions are, the action isn’t just limited to what’s happening inside the building. As one of the newest members of the security team, Hazel Ozulku keeps her watchful eye out over the forecourt area, looking for any signs of trouble, not just at Portland House but across the surrounding estate as well. Although she has only been based at Cardinal Place for less than four months, Hazel already knows most of the Aspire team by name and loves being at the centre of such a vibrant place. She also has a front-row view of the weekly Thursday food market on the doorstep of Portland House, which always make lunchtime more interesting for everyone in the area. The many market stalls sell a whole assortment of savoury and sweet items, including gingerbread, cheese, jams, sausage rolls and British-inspired macaroons. For something more substantial, there are stalls selling pies, chorizo hot dogs and the

Portland House team’s favourite, fish and chips. With so many other Landsec sites close by, the market also makes for an ideal meeting point with other members of the Aspire team. As Portland House’s services are closely linked with those at the neighbouring Landsec buildings, they often have other Aspire members visiting. Whenever there’s an issue with the power or the boiler needs fixing, the team know that they can rely on Engineers like Connor Fitzsimons to come over and deal with the problem. Like Hazel, Connor has become fully integrated within the team despite only having been based there for less than a year. When asked about his relationship with the people at Portland House, he mentions that ‘he couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of people to work with’. Based in one of the most exciting parts of Victoria and home to some of Aspire’s most colourful characters, there’s never a dull moment onsite. With a team like this, it’s easy to see why Portland House is a popular pick for customers and colleagues alike. 10

In focus with

ULTIMATE SECURITY, PORTLAND HOUSE

Vincent Cofie A HOUSE AWAY FROM HOME For Security Guard Vincent Cofie, leaving for Portland House each morning means far more than just ‘going to work’. For him, it has become a key part of his life and something to truly feel proud of. After a whole range of jobs in everything from finance to education, ‘Vince’ (as he is known to most) is now universally regarded as an integral member of the security team. Since he began onsite in January 2017, he has come to think of Portland House as a home away from home. For him, it is clearly not just a place of work but one that he really cares about. He can often be seen throughout the day performing extra duties to ensure both receptions look perfect, even rearranging cushions and adjusting vases. When asked about his attitude to the front of house, Vince commented ‘I take care

12

of this place more than I do my own house’. As he is based so close to his actual home in Stockwell, it helps that he can be onsite in no time if a situation arises. Working five days a week, Vince often finds himself in charge of both receptions at Portland House, jumping between them throughout the day. As the site is home to so many of Landsec’s customers, Vince is always kept busy, dealing with everything from welcoming people and helping reception to investigating faulty lights and security threats. He is often required to perform beyond his usual

AspireAsOne.co.uk

responsibilities and because of the sheer variety of people he deals with, no two days are ever the same for him. It’s a good thing, then, that Vince is very much a ‘people person’, winning over customers and colleagues alike with his trademark smile. He takes every challenge in his stride, acknowledging that his work can be difficult but that is also very rewarding. One achievement that he is especially proud of is how many people he knows onsite, adding that ‘building up these relationships with customers is what really makes your day’. As much as he enjoys his time spent at Portland House, Vince has plenty to

AspireAsOneTeam

@AspireAsOne

keep him busy offsite as well. Although he recently stopped playing in his local football league, his love for the game has only grown and he still takes every chance to see players in action. So it’s no wonder that he was one of the loudest supporters at this Summer’s Aspire Derby II. Much of his personal time is also spent with his family, having recently visited Málaga and several art museums. With a natural love for art, he is grateful for some of the pieces that decorate the receptions back at Portland House. When you think of your workplace as a second home, no task is too difficult. The team at Portland House is lucky to have someone as enthusiastic and cultured as Vince around.
