ONE MESSAGE FROM

The Steering Committee A Season of Change THE TEMPERATURES MIGHT BE DROPPING, AND THE YEAR IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE BUT ASPIRE HAS SHOWN NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN. IN ONE PARTICULAR CASE, THINGS HAVE REALLY BEGUN TO PICK UP SPEED AS ASPIRE LOOKS SET TO BEGIN 2019 STRONGER THAN EVER.

We hope this years Sway it Cool festive party is as much fun for members as the 2017 Aspire Beach Ball. See you there!

A major refurbishment project has just begun on the official ‘AspireAssist’ areas (see page 12). This will reshape both 16 Palace Street and One New Change and will be the start of a new era for Landsec and its service partners. As works continue, more and more news will be released regarding the project and what it will mean for the team in general. 2

With these developments and the upcoming Aspire Recognition Awards 2018, Sway It Cool festive party and Aspire’s Christmas Jumper Day, there’s still plenty to look forward to before the end of 2018. Keep an eye out at One New Change and 16 Palace Street for the first look at the future of Aspire.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU A new MESSENGER FOR LONDON

A

cross London, the way Landsec brings information to visiting people is changing. With the new Landsec Aspire totems, it’s never been easier to receive the latest news on the move. As many as 19 of these state-of-theart, digital signs have been installed in Landsec sites across London. Each one is regularly updated, providing the team and visitors alike with the very latest news and messages from Landsec. Positioned with the front of house team, message totems can be easily spotted so anyone walking through our doors can benefit. They have already received much praise from the Aspire team for keeping them updated on current events. Recently, they were used to promote Remembrance Day across the portfolio, reminding people of the 2-minute silence that would be held and the fact that red poppies could be purchased at reception. The totems made it easier than ever for Aspire to politely remind people to pay their respects. As we draw closer to the festive season, the totems will also be used to spread some seasonal spirit. They will provide the latest information on upcoming holiday events, such as Seasonal Cheer Christmas Jumper Day. Be sure to check the totems regularly for the latest details.

62 Buckingham Gate As part of the overall rebranding scheme, Landsec Aspire totems have upgraded the way we bring information to team members and customers. If you are aware of any old Land Securities signs, anywhere at all, please contact aspire@landsec.com so that we can arrange to have them replaced.

Success

SINCE THE ZIG ZAG BUILDING FIRST OPENED IN 2015, IT HAS STOOD TALL AS A LEADING EXAMPLE OF MODERN DESIGN. TODAY, IT IS NOT JUST RECOGNISED FOR ITS ARCHITECTURAL INNOVATION BUT AS ONE OF THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SITES IN LONDON.

T

he recommended target for properties in the UK is to recycle a minimum of 75% of all materials onsite. This target is something that Landsec buildings across the UK strive to meet on a daily basis. However, not content with simply following the crowd, the innovative Aspire team at The Zig Zag Building in Victoria has exceeded all expectations with an exemplary average of 92%, with some months even reaching an incredible 97%. This exceptional statistic is the highest of any Landsec building across the London Portfolio. Zig Zag can now also boast a ‘zero waste to landfill’ record plus the team has been cutting carbon emissions by only having one delivery truck per day for recycled materials. For a busy site in the heart of London with a dozen floors dedicated to Landsec customers, these are truly remarkable results.

Earlier this year, after recognising that The Zig Zag Building was making such impressive progress, Andy Merritt, Bywater’s Sustainability Manager for Landsec’s West End portfolio, submitted an entry for the Green Apple Awards. The prestigious awards were established in 1994 to recognise, reward and promote the best environmental practices. Several months after submitting their entry, Landsec and Bywaters were informed of their successful bid and invited to the official award ceremony, which takes place in November each year. Andy was understandably thrilled to hear the news, though not especially surprised, as he is only too aware of the huge effort put in by the whole Aspire team in Victoria. ‘We set the bar high’, he comments, with the whole team setting the example in terms of both teamwork and environmental strategies. The Green Apple Awards began in London but have since become an international competition hosting events in countries such as New Zealand and South Korea.

This initiative encourages companies to improve their environmental performance and to support the wider goals of sustainable development. The 2018 awards ceremony was held on 12th November at the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Palace. Bywaters Sustainability Manager Andy Merritt was joined on the day by Landsec’s Ben Thomson, Operations Manager at The Zig Zag Building. The event, starting at midday, had over 80 guests in attendance, including people representing the other nominated companies. Before long, Andy and Ben were invited to receive the Green Apple Awards ‘Silver’ trophy and certificate for Environmental Best Practice. A congratulations speech was also given praising the team for the impressive work done at The Zig Zag Building. The certificate will be framed as a reminder to everyone, of just what has been accomplished. A tree has also been planted in honour of the event.

Nahim Lallmamode

The Green Apple Award is not just a victory for Landsec and Bywaters. Andy and the rest of the team never could have made it the success it is without the efforts of every Aspire member onsite. NJC’s cleaning team in particular, ‘have been a massive help’, Andy comments, as they are usually the

This group effort has not only included Aspire members but also Landsec customers, many of whom have taken an active role. Landsec’s relationship with its customers has helped to pave the way for environmental progress, allowing Bywaters to educate them on the best ways to manage waste and energy conservation strategies. Some customers at Zig Zag, such as Deutsche Bank Wealth Management, have already made becoming ‘greener’ a priority and so Aspire has been able to work with them towards a common goal. Without these communications, the fantastic results they’ve had ‘just wouldn’t have been possible’, Andy comments. Andy, Lorena and the rest of the Aspire team at The Zig Zag Building have proved that teamwork, great customer relations and a bit of extra care can go a long way in getting greener results. As the team continues to move forward with its environmental practices, we hope that their outstanding work will continue to be recognised. 18

THE ZIG ZAG BUILDING

COMBINING HUMILITY WITH ENTHUSIASM Although she has only been overseeing The Zig Zag Building since July, Service Support Manager Lorena Yapura has never had any trouble feeling at home. While this is partly down to her excellent work ethic, it is also the result of her great team spirit and friendly attitude. Lorena first joined NJC in 2015 working as a Supervisor. After proving herself to be a willing, dependable member of the team, she was made one of NJC Service Support Managers and was given multiple Landsec sites to oversee. Currently, in addition to Zig Zag, she works on sites such as 123 Victoria Street and Kings Gate. Regardless of which estate she finds herself on, Lorena always arrives at work at least half an hour early just to ensure things are run smoothly.

20

Despite her advancement within Aspire, Lorena is still one of the humblest members of the team, more often praising the efforts of colleagues rather than her own. Her ‘one team’ ethos is something that has clearly rubbed off on the NJC team at Zig Zag, as they often show the willingness to help outside their own designated cleaning areas. Lorena always approaches every Aspire event with great enthusiasm. Always willing to participate, she isn’t afraid to take a ‘hands on’

AspireAsOne.co.uk

approach either. This was evident during the second day of the Honeypot House and Campus Enhancements Project, which took place at the start of August. It was a long day with a lot of painting involved but Lorena thought it was a fantastic opportunity to do something truly meaningful. She has also been making great progress with the Aspire Harriers Running Club, jogging with old colleagues and making a few new friends along the way. When Lorena is not trying to beat her time in Victoria

Park, she can often be found at her local volleyball court. Even in the colder months, she believes it’s important to keep active in any way she can. She is now looking forward to celebrating a great year with her colleagues, old and new, at the upcoming Aspire Sway It Cool party. When you have as much enthusiasm as Lorena, no task seems too difficult. She has been an inspiration for the rest of the team as her progression with NJC has only fuelled her desire to get more involved with all things Aspire.

LANDSEC WEST END PORTFOLIO

GREAT PERFORMANCE ‘MERRITTS’ RECOGNITION As Bywater’s Sustainability Manager for the whole of Landsec’s West End portfolio, Andy Merritt takes great pride in the progress that he and the rest of the Aspire team have achieved in making sites greener than ever. So when he heard that Bywaters and Landsec had won the coveted Green Apple Award, he was more than a little excited. For Andy, work has always been about setting targets and going beyond them. Despite his friendly, easy-going attitude with his friends and colleagues, he is clearly very disciplined when it comes to his role. When at the office on Zig Zag’s First Floor, Andy is usually busy managing waste teams and maintaining communications. His work also takes him down to the waste rooms and basement levels of other estates across the West End. Adopting the idea that ‘waste rooms don’t have to be dirty’, he personally helps to ensure Bywater’s standards are met, and his

22

‘hands on’ approach has enabled him to build up a great rapport with the rest of the Aspire team. Although he’ll soon be moving to the Nova Estate away from The Zig Zag Building, he knows that doesn’t mean he’ll be separated from the team. When asked about this, he commented that ‘we’re all connected with the other sites’, understanding the idea of the ‘one team’ ethos. Knowing that he can always rely on his colleagues is absolutely invaluable to Andy as he knows the work he’s done has always been part of a bigger group effort.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

Despite his excitement over the recent Green Apple Award, it certainly isn’t the first one that Andy’s received. As a young child, he spent hours experiencing some of the ‘golden age’ of martial arts movies, starring the likes of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris.

AspireAsOneTeam

@AspireAsOne

From this, Andy developed a keen interest in karate and kickboxing, winning several trophies along the way. Although he no longer participates in tournaments, he has continued to develop his knowledge of martial arts and still attends lessons when able. He also proved his mettle at the Peaks District Challenge 2018, being the first to cross the finish line on the 25km Copper Challenge. He balances his work life with time spent with his family, being a proud father. As a season ticket holder, he also tries to make appearances at West Ham United games whenever possible and hopes that one day they can be as successful as he has been at winning trophies. Although Andy always aims high, he has continued to meet and surpass expectations. Congratulations to him for all his work on the West End portfolio and for helping to make The Zig Zag Building what it is today.
