ONE MESSAGE FROM
The Steering Committee How does Aspire benefit building users? BEFORE ANSWERING THIS QUESTION, IT IS IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT COLLABORATIVE WORKING AND THE BENEFITS THIS GIVES TO AN ORGANISATION IN GENERAL. Many will look at their business (whether small or large) and strive to achieve their own core values by means of process, operational output and how they are seen from an external perspective. The key focus is to reach these standards by means of crossdepartmental collaboration and teamwork; as all aspects of the business interlink and complement each other to create a company’s internal culture.
Paul Crilly Managing Director
If we now look at this from a client’s perspective in the context of an outsourced world, the ‘ultimate goal’ is to achieve a seamless, high quality outcome harmoniously amongst their services partners across all disciplines which historically could be seen as a complex and fragmented arena, given that each service partner has their own processes, procedures and values; which is essentially why they were selected from the beginning. The Aspire initiative is a platform which is the perfect vehicle in which (as service partners) we buy into this ‘ultimate goal’ and work as one team to deliver an overall service on behalf of and with the support from our client Land Securities.
2
www.AspireAsOne.co.uk
As a building user, practically, this manifests itself in ever closer working relationships across service requirements and this automatically gives confidence that their needs will be met, It automatically demonstrates a sense of ‘real’ service delivery. The harmony achieved also has the positive by-product of destressing the working environment adding to an overall improvement in well-being which in itself reinforces the Aspire principles. This collaborative approach is demonstrated across many areas and customer service, along with all of the Aspire values, and is at the heart of giving building users a first class experience from when they approach a Land securities location to when they walk through the door at the start of the day, and when they leave after a hard day’s work. From being greeted by operatives as they walk into an estate and being hosted through reception to access the building and from general day-to-day interaction to emergency situations - Aspire sets an innovative, industry leading benchmark to provide a clean, welcoming, maintained and secure environment for all.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU HELPING PEOPLE TO BOUNCE BACK SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED IN 2011, THE CHARITY BOUNCE BACK HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO THE TRAINING OF EX-OFFENDERS AND HELPING THEM TO FIND EMPLOYMENT, CHANGING THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE.
I
n recognition of this great cause, Land Securities has been helping extensively with the project since 2014.
By working closely with the Painting and Decorating Training Centre in Brixton, Land Securities has been able to manage referrals for participants into specialised work academies and then into employment. This has allowed
the effective fast-tracking of those involved in the scheme, making it easier than ever for them to find work. More recently, Land Securities has been making advancements to the project, including the launch of the Bounce Back Scaffolding Academy. As well as this, those on the Painting and Decorating Service have been enabled to carry out works at 24 Southwark Bridge Road, a Land Securities site based near such landmarks as Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern. With this ‘combined approach’, Community Manager Ben Anderson comments, ‘Land Securities now not only supports good causes, but engages them in our day-to-day business’.
Working so effectively with the Bounce Back charity, Land Securities will continue to provide more and more opportunities like this to help people transform their lives for the better.
WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE BASED AT THE NEW LUDGATE BUILDINGS, SERVICE PROVIDERS HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE WASTE DISPOSAL AND RECYCLING PROCESSES.
NJC Waste Team Leader Ionut Cislariu has played a major role in new training initiatives providing invaluable coaching sessions to the cleaning teams onsite. Through this programme, Aspire team members have improved their knowledge on the proper use of waste streams and weighing waste. By receiving the same training and working together, the ‘one team’ ethos has been promoted for all those involved as well as ensuring a more effective service. The result has been reflected in the increase in recycled materials across both buildings at New Ludgate, as all members of staff continue to demonstrate the benefit of this training.

ince they first began training apprentices in 1934, NG Bailey has transformed the lives of thousands of people, equipping them with the qualifications and skills they need to progress in their careers. Offering 12 different apprenticeship programmes covering everything from HR to Electrical Installation and Quantity Surveying, the course provides a fantastic way to ‘earn as you learn’. The cases of Adam Donoghue, Charlie Burton and Jack Doyle are prime examples of how effective the course has been. Having worked with Land Securities for several years and completing the course in July 2016, ‘all three have gone on to become qualified engineers in their own right’, as General Manager David Wickens comments. Equally impressive is how quickly each of them has been integrated into their positions. By working across different sites, including New Ludgate and New Street Square, they have been enabled to not only broaden their skills but to interact with more of the wider Aspire team in the process.

Team members like Nageen Jalal helped to make the transition as easy possible.
With this level of support, Adam is now ‘far more confident’, he comments, with his role than when he first started. Combined with the valuable work experience he received from the course, Adam has been able to hit the ground running at New Ludgate. When asked about the work she did as part of the apprenticeship, Charlie Burton comments that it was a ‘good all-round course’ for providing her with the specialist knowledge needed for her role. Now working at New Street Square, close to New Ludgate, she comments that the members of NG Bailey staff have been ‘easy to approach’ and always ‘willing to help’ whenever it has been needed. Speaking to her about her time as an apprentice, she also comments that Service Delivery Manager Colin Harvey was the ‘go-to man’ for all three of them, providing helpful advice and dealing with arrangements for the work experience necessary for the completion of the course.

“ALL THREE HAVE GONE ON TO BECOME QUALIFIED ENGINEERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT David Wickens General Manager
Adam Donoghue (above) and Jack Doyle (Left) have integrated effortlessly into the Aspire team.
Although he is not currently based at any one site, Jack Doyle is still able to apply the skills gained from his apprenticeship wherever they are needed. Moving between New Ludgate, New Street Square and several of the sites based near Victoria station, he has played an integral role in helping with major projects. Like Adam and Charlie, he was able to work for several weeks in locations, dealing with large-scale installations and redevelopments. This work experience helped all three of them to better appreciate the applications of what they were

doing in real-life scenarios. Again, none of this would have been possible without Colin Harvey, who was invaluable in securing these placements and developing their portfolios. It is a great feat that Adam, Charlie and Jack have achieved so much in such a short amount of time, effortlessly integrating into their working environments. With the NG Bailey apprenticeship proving successful on so many fronts, we look forward to seeing more talented individuals welcomed to the Aspire team in the future.

FRONT OF HOUSE RECEPTIONIST, 60 LUDGATE HILL
Rhoda Olarewaju A CLASS ACT ON ALL FRONTS
After working at New Ludgate for nine months, Rhoda has become a key member of the Aspire team, engaging fully not only as one of the faces of the site but with the demands of work offsite as well. Calm, professional and always cheerful, Rhoda’s positive attitude seems infectious to the rest of the team, demonstrating a great working relationship not only with fellow Front of House Staff but with those working behind the scenes as well. She clearly displays an extensive knowledge of the customers onsite, more than capable of providing up-to-date information for any visitors. With these qualities, it is no wonder that Rhoda stands out so much as a member of the Front of House staff at New Ludgate.
www.AspireAsOne.co.uk
Speaking to her at length, it becomes clear that she has made a great effort to become a part of the wider Aspire team. As well as embracing many of the values that makes the team so successful, she has interacted with other members by attending several of the yearly events, most recently the Aspire Awards ceremony in December.
Considering the time and thought that she puts into this, Rhoda sets a great example of balancing the demands of her degree with everything she does at New Ludgate and with the Aspire team outside of work.
Despite all this, she is still able to find the time needed outside of work to focus on her full-time Psychology degree, which involves extensive research and working from home.

Ruben Fernande
1 1/2 pounds salt cod 1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 cups thinly sliced yellow onions 1 tablespoon chopped garlic Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds of waxy potatoes, sliced 5mm thick (pre-cooked until tender) 4 hard boiled eggs 8 black olives 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley leaves

DISHES FROM AROUND THE WORLD If you have a recipe with links to your culture, family or past, why not share them with fellow Aspire team members by submitting yours to this regular column. Please send them to aspire@landsecurities.com
1. In advance, soak the cod in cold, salted water for 24 to 36 hours, changing the water occasionally. 2. Drain the cod, then flake it into small pieces, removing any bones. Set this aside. 3. In a large frying pan, over a medium heat, add 1/4 cup of the oil. When the oil is hot, add the onions and the garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Saute until slightly golden (about 6 minutes). 4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (gas mark 4). Grease a medium ovenproof casserole dish with 1 teaspoon of olive oil. 5. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper, then spread half of them over the bottom of the prepared casserole dish. 6. Sprinkle half of the salted cod over the potatoes, place half of the onion mixture over the cod, then top the onions with the rest of the cod. 7. Place another layer of potatoes over the top of the cod, then drizzle the entire pan with the remaining 1/4 cup of oil. Place in the oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden. 8. Place on a serving platter. Garnish with the sliced eggs, olives, and parsley to finish the dish.
