ONE MESSAGE FROM

The Steering Committee

LearnAsOne WE SELECT THE VERY BEST PEOPLE TO JOIN THE TEAM AT PRINCIPLE CLEANING SERVICES. OVER THE YEARS WE’VE FOUND THAT HIRING PEOPLE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT DOING A GREAT JOB, WHETHER THEY ARE WORKING AS A HOUSEKEEPER, WINDOW CLEANER OR WASTE MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST, IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. There are fantastic opportunities for everyone to progress within our sector. I’d encourage everyone to seize the opportunities to learn and develop whenever they can. Sometimes it might be formal training for new equipment or techniques or specialist coaching on customer focus, confidence and team work, but it’s important not to overlook the informal on the job support that adds up to how we all develop as highly skilled professionals. As well as valuing each individual’s performance and contribution, we all want our people to enjoy being part of a team, part of the family, and collectively take pride in a job well done. Making sure we take time to work with each team and ensuring everyone understands the bigger picture and how they can contribute, is really important. I’d encourage everyone to take time to acknowledge the hard work of colleagues and look for ways to support one another. When everyone is working hard together towards a shared goal and going the extra mile, that’s what makes the difference between good and great in the customer’s eyes. There is a wealth of opportunities within the sector and as you develop, new and different career paths can open up. If you maintain a passion for people, quality and constantly seek for improvement, you’ll find a lifetime of career development.

ASPIRE STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS ASPIRE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

May‘17

LAST MONTH SAW THESE PEOPLE RECOGNISED BY YOU FOR EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE AND FOR SIMPLY BEING A GREAT TEAM MEMBER. NOMINATIONS CAN NOW BE MADE VIA THE WEBSITE.

Due to the timing of the flood and the fact that it was difficult to locate the source, the City Maintenance team were limited in how much they could help. Luckily, Frank Opoku (right), a member of the onsite security, was available to deal with the situation. Throughout his night shift, he carried out routine spot checks on the spillage, making sure to update the maintenance team with any new information. He even went as far as mopping and disposing of the water, demonstrating a ‘hands on’ approach that went a long way in controlling the flood and made things a lot easier for the maintenance team when they arrived the following morning. Facilities Manager Paul Sullivan even commented that ‘without

For taking such quick action and showing the ability to question the individual, Shannon showed a great level of concern for the safety of those on the site and for proper security measures. Assistant Security Manager Elvis

Albert, of Cardinal Place, has nominated her for a Player of the Month Award in recognition of her Exceptional Contribution to the team.

Shannon was heading towards the 16 Palace Street site via the basement for break cover when she noticed a ‘contractor’ running towards her. While it might have

been easier to simply let the man through, she took appropriate action by closing the door ahead and asking to see the contractor’s access pass. When he was unable to show one, Shannon politely refused to allow him in and asked that he visit the control room to speak to the security team.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT

Bywaters of Bow BASED ON THE LEA RIVERSIDE, BYWATERS IS ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING PROVIDERS OF MATERIAL MANAGEMENT. DESPITE BEING BASED SO FAR AWAY FROM OTHER ASPIRE SITES, THE RESULTS OF THEIR INNOVATION AND PROGRESSIVE ENGINEERING WORKS CAN BE SEEN AT LOCATIONS ACROSS THE WHOLE OF LONDON AND BEYOND.

At the heart of the site is the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where over 130,000 tonnes of waste is processed every year.

A

t the heart of the Bywaters site is the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where over 130,000 tonnes of waste from Bywaters’ clients, including Landsec, is processed every year. Here, small teams of up to 35 people at any one time work tirelessly together to ensure that the recycling process is carried out correctly from start to finish. As new deliveries arrive in the main bay, they are responsible for jobs such as separating materials and identifying any non-recyclable waste materials that may have slipped through. Following this, the materials are finally sorted into bales, which are then ready for distribution. What’s remarkable is that, aside from Christmas Day and the hour between 12pm to 1pm, this process runs 364 days a year. By using a rota system (three shifts of eight hours around the clock), and with the state-of-theart facilities onsite, this dedicated team have been able to maximise productivity. Overlooking all of the action below is the MRF office. With more than 15 different cameras, supervisors are enabled to keep track every step of the way, using the intercom to maintain communications with the rest of the team on the ground level. The fact that the team is able to carry out such a complex process almost 24/7

throughout the year is a testament to their communication skills and teamwork. Just a short distance away from this is the onsite Engineer team. Although Bywaters have clients based all over London and beyond, this workshop serves as a central hub for a whole variety of different projects. Staff members like Implementation Engineer Paul Hebden and Maintenance Engineer Phil Van Eeden, with over six years of experience, specialise in electrics, metal work and welding. A security door or piece of bespoke wiring that they work on one week might be seen at One New Change or The Nova Building the next. Although they are given a set of instructions for each new piece of work, the additional tools and freedom Paul and Phil are given also allow them to find new, innovative ways of increasing the efficiency and the safety of their products. It is this kind of approach that has, as Senior Client Relationship Manager Solomon Jackson comments, ‘kept Bywaters and Landsec at the forefront of their industry in terms of sustainability and operational effectiveness’.

Despite all the fantastic work carried out in the MRF room and on the engineering side of things, it’s important to remember that they are all linked to the staff from other departments on site, without whom none of this would be possible. Health and Safety Officer Roy Martin, for instance, has spent over 15 years with Bywaters and has since become a familiar face for the rest of the team. In addition to his usual duties, Roy also uses the designated classrooms on the second floor to educate future generations of waste management specialists. On this floor, you can also find long-standing staff members like Service Manager Karen Canal and Environmental Consultant Dr Alan Kirk, both of whom have dealt with the company’s contracts and legal work for over 14 years. Just 8

down the corridor you can find Strategic Development Manager David Rumble, who has become something of a spokesperson for the site and is clearly proud of everything the team has achieved. Thanks to their efforts, Bywaters is now over 80% self-sufficient and, as David comments, ‘possibly the greenest recycling centre in the world’. As the departments are so effectively connected, it is clear that they are not individual, separated groups but rather smaller pieces of a larger whole. Sustainability Manager Andreanna Coley confirms this, stressing that one of the key factors they look for in new staff is how well they’ll fit into the wider team. It’s an environment where ‘everyone knows everyone’, she comments, one that promotes teamwork and professionalism above all else.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

Bywaters recently featured on BBC news From the teams on the upper levels to the recycling operators on the frontline of the MRF room, everyone on site has played a vital role in turning the Bywaters base of operations into the success story it is today. More than a recycling site, the staff there have proved that they are a central support for the Aspire movement all year round.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK Having spent over six years as an Implementation Engineer at Bywaters, Paul Hebden has become familiar with everything from food compactors and wires to schematics and buzz saws. Speaking to the man behind the mask at length, it’s easy to see why he has become such a valuable asset not only to Bywaters but to the whole Aspire team. Working on projects such as security doors for sites all over the city, it is up to Paul to ensure that all finished work meets the requirements for safety and efficiency. With such a demanding position and with

so much responsibility, it helps that he is, in his own words, a ‘perfectionist at heart’. Regardless of how big or small each new task is, Paul approaches each one with equal care and attention to detail, willing to work for as long as it takes until he is satisfied with the end result. As he is provided with such a wide array of tools in the Engineer Workshop, he also has plenty of room to experiment and innovate, finding new, more efficient ways of dealing with any problems that may arise. This is something that he greatly appreciates, given his natural passion for welding and metal work, allowing him to bring a genuine enthusiasm to work each day.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

AspireAsOneTeam

@AspireAsOne

His loves outside the Bywaters site are as varied as his engineering position. When he isn’t focused at his workbench you can often find Paul keeping active at his local gym, power walking in nearby parks or swimming. Alongside this, he maintains a keen interest in Ancient History and Mysteries, Archaeology and reading, revealing a more studious side to his character. Of course, even with all these pursuits, he’ll always make time to cheer on his beloved Arsenal FC, who he has supported for almost twenty years. The Aspire team is lucky to have such a versatile, dedicated member of staff working at the head of so many of Bywaters’ projects.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU ASPIRE’S POSITIVE INFLUENCE POSITIVITY IS A KEY FACTOR WHEN IT COMES TO MAINTAINING A HAPPY, SAFE, PROFESSIONAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT. SIMILARLY, IT CAN SOMETIMES HELP TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND CONSIDER THE THINGS THAT WE DO WELL AND THOSE THAT CAN BE IMPROVED ON.

T

his is something that Landsec clearly understands, as they held the recent LearnAsOne Personal Development course to help members improve their Positivity and Mindfulness. Running throughout the day on Friday 1st June, the course offered attendees a range of questions and activities to help improve their positivity not only at work but in their day-to-day, personal lives as well. This was also a brilliant opportunity for staff to get to know one another, placing a focus on team building and improving relationships.

The end result, following the reflection on these key values, was that the team left with a greater appreciation for the roles that they and their fellow Aspire members have. It helped to develop a more positive outlook and helped to set realistic goals for the future, but also celebrated everything that the participants had done already to develop the professional, connected team that can be seen today.

In a matter of minutes, responses were coming in from multilingual staff willing to help with the project, specialising in languages such as Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Lithuanian and Nepalese. This 10 week course starts on 5th June and so far has had a great response from Aspire members from multiple sites. Congratulations to Amanda and the volunteers for offering their services with this.

THOROUGHNESS REWARDED NJC Operative Claudio Carrion Troya has received an NJC Gratitude Award after demonstrating a dedicated approach to his role. Responding to a recent flood at the Monico Estate, 19-23 Shaftesbury Avenue, Claudio provided excellent customer care in dealing with the incident. Despite his shift ending two hours earlier, Claudio was still prepared to carry out a thorough search on site to ensure that the spillage had been contained and that the area had been properly cleaned and disinfected. In doing so, ‘Claudio showed true Aspire and NJC values of going the extra mile’, Portfolio Manager Charles Walden commented. It is thanks to the efforts of Aspire members like Claudio that these sites remain clean, safe environments for the rest of the team and customers alike.

GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK TO AN ASPIRE GREAT

But what do we REALLY think of Rob?

WE HAVE RECENTLY SAID GOODBYE TO SENIOR PORTFOLIO MANAGER AND NJC LEGEND ROB TREWICK. Having started with the company over four years ago, Rob had been at the lead of some of their largest projects and become one of the main figureheads of the Aspire community. Respectful, reliable and equipped with a great sense of humour, Rob had played the part of both friend and mentor not only to NJC staff but to others at Landsec and their Service Partners as well. It was largely thanks to his leadership and commitment that NJC were recently able to renew their 5-year contract with Landsec, guaranteeing a stronger future for the team. Many will remember Rob for his organisation of events such as the Aspire ScoreAsOne football tournament last November, when he displayed his lifelong passion for ‘the beautiful game’. With this in mind, what better way to say farewell than his very own ‘Rob Trewick Testimonial’ match? The first ever Aspire derby took place on Wednesday 24th May at the City of London Academy, Bermondsey and featured the ASPIRE ALL STARS against the ASPIRE LEGENDS XI.

He has energy and commitment to burn. He has shown enthusiasm from his first day with NJC.

The match drew in crowds of friends and workmates to help him celebrate a very successful time as part of the team. A huge thank you from everyone for all that Rob’s done and for making the Aspire movement what it is today.

Always pushes and never settles for anything less than zero tolerance on H&S.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

One of the most respected managers in NJC. Has both played and been an official referee.

A loyal and very nice man.

AspireAsOneTeam

He is a chatterbox, party animal, a poor horse racing tipster and clearly does not understand football!

Life and soul of any gathering. Loves to have a few drinks! Family man with his wife Liz and two kids.

MASSIVE SUNDERLAND FAN

Robert has been a true example of a leader. He has endless energy and passion for both Landsec & NJC. He alongside others, has driven Aspire from an idea into what it is today. He is fiercely loyal to his team and company, always delivers on his promises and a great mentor for a lot of people past and present.

@AspireAsOne

One of life’s good guys!

It has been a pleasure working with him to help Aspire grow from strength to strength.
