AT THIS TIME OF YEAR WE REALLY BEGIN TO RECOGNISE THE EVERYDAY HEROES, THE ONES WHO ASK FOR NO REWARD, FOR EVERYTHING THEY CONTRIBUTE TO OUR EXPANDING TEAM. This year, we are inviting Aspire members and customers to have their say with the 2017 Aspire Recognition Awards. A small number of people have been shortlisted for the awards, people who have continued to exemplify the core values of our Aspire movement. These values, such as Integrity and Customer Service, have been split into categories in order to recognise the many different ways individuals have been such a credit to the greater whole. With just a few weeks until the closing date, there’s no time to waste, so get your voices heard! All of this comes off the back of Landsec’s recent triumph at the highly coveted annual BIFM Awards, winning the category of ‘Impact on the Environment’. BIFM are the professional body for facilities management and give these awards only to those groups that provide the very highest levels of service. In particular, Landsec were praised for our ‘real passion to do the “right thing”’, something that speaks volumes about the ideals and the attitudes of our wider team.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU A REAL TEAM EFFORT AT PORTLAND HOUSE IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING ON SUNDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER, THE 15TH FLOOR OF PORTLAND HOUSE EXPERIENCED A SERIOUS WATER LEAK WHEN A PIPE BURST. IF LEFT FOR LONG, THIS COULD HAVE DEVELOPED INTO A VERY COSTLY INCIDENT. Fortunately, it is in difficult situations like this that the Aspire team really shines. More than a dozen members of staff from Ultimate Security, NG Bailey and NJC came together in an impressive group effort to combat the flooding. Working seamlessly with one another, every Aspire member played a key role in ensuring the water was turned off and damages to the building were limited. Thanks to their teamwork, nearly all of the excess water had been cleaned up by the end of the following day. A special mention goes to Robert Martin, of NJC, ‘who was like a whirlwind in the clean-up process’, Portfolio Manager Charles Walden comments, and was truly exceptional even amongst the ‘true stars’ of the

team involved. Portfolio Manager Jonathan Rose also comments that if the whole team had not pulled together so effectively, ‘we could have been in a much worse position’. A huge congratulations to every member of NG Bailey, NJC and Ultimate Security for providing such exemplary service and demonstrating the key values that make the Aspire team so successful.

OUT OF SIGHT, NOT OUT OF MIND

The Observatory A SHORT DRIVE FROM EBBSFLEET INTERNATIONAL STATION IN KENT, THE OBSERVATORY HAS OVERLOOKED THE BUILDING WORKS AT EBBSFLEET VALLEY SINCE IT FIRST BEGAN. THE 17 MILLION SQUARE FEET SITE SPREADS ACROSS MORE THAN 1,000 ACRES OF LAND WHICH WILL HAVE RESIDENTIAL, BUSINESS, RETAIL, LEISURE AND COMMUNITY USES, WITH THE PROJECT AIMING TO EVENTUALLY CREATE A PLACE WITH A POPULATION CLOSE TO THAT OF CHICHESTER. AT THE HEART OF THE DEVELOPMENT IS A SMALL TEAM OF DEDICATED ASPIRE MEMBERS, WHO THE ONE COMMUNITY VIBE HAS CLEARLY REACHED.

With a little help from her friends, Lorraine Morrison continues to manage operations at The Observatory, even with an injury!

Assistant Operations Manager Jodie Davis explains where in Kent Ebbsfleet Valley is.

W

ith the development work being done and the hopes of creating a ‘garden city’ with over 40% of the available land being preserved as parkland and open space, the Aspire members onsite at The Observatory have had the opportunity to watch the rise of a new area. Operations Manager Lorraine Morrison has been working here since 2006, and so has been playing a significant role in the Ebbsfleet development since day one. What’s remarkable is the level of commitment Lorraine and her team continues to show for the project, and their real enthusiasm for the progress that has been made. But what’s really impressive is that so much has been achieved with such a small team. As Lorraine comments, ‘with so much to oversee, there’s a lot of responsibility’, as it falls to her and Assistant Operations Manager Jodie Davis to deal with all communications onsite. Naturally, this means that Jodie, Lorraine and the other few individuals onsite have had to learn to multi-task, often performing outside what would usually be expected of their roles.

Security Officer David Harris, for instance, not only patrols the site and monitors CCTV feeds but also acts as a receptionist when necessary. Even while Head of Security Arif Azha is faced with a whole range of tasks to deal with, he is still able to help other members of the team with their roles as well.

David Harris keeps a close eye of all security matters.

There is no onsite cleaning team (only a mobile one), meaning that this small team has had to deal with several problems first-hand. While this can present a lot of challenges at times, the advantage is that the Aspire members who are present have formed tighter, more effective working relationships as a result. It is important to remember that the works that are happening here are being done ‘from the people up’, as Lorraine comments. As with the Aspire team, the people involved are clearly at the core of this project, as the concerns and queries of new residents are paramount. The idea of building an attractive living environment for the hundreds of newcomers moving to the area has been made a primary concern, with the Aspire team doing everything to ‘bring the local community closer together’, Jodie comments.

To avoid letting issues get out of hand, they have held forum meetings to listen to the residents’ suggestions, hosted coffee mornings and even events like ‘Pimms in the Park’, all designed to promote the experience for everyone living there. The developments next to The Observatory have placed people and the community at the centre, with Lorraine and Jodie at the head of the small but highly efficient team. They have been leading the way from day one, championing the values of Aspire both onsite and offsite to make the Ebbsfleet project a success.

David still finds time for long walks and jogging outdoors, activities that he enjoys as well as others that also help him to keep fit.

In focus with

SECURITAS, THE OBSERVATORY

David Harris THE EYES OF THE OBSERVATORY For an operation as large as the development in Ebbsfleet, it’s vital to have staff members who can be trusted to keep an eye on proceedings. Fortunately, David Harris has proved that he’s the man for the job time and time again since he started at The Observatory in 2016. Usually found working in the CCTV room or acting as Front of House, David is able to keep a close eye on all proceedings onsite. As a member of the security team, it falls to David to ensure any problems are dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible. This includes everything from tracking down missing property to biker gangs causing disruption to the housing developments offsite. Although he has been working at The Observatory for just over a year, his professionalism and good humour have allowed him to become a much-liked member of the team there. As someone who has worked in other security roles for most of his career, his wealth of experience 8

means that no problem is ever too great for him to deal with. For someone who is kept consistently busy, Dave is still able to remain focused at all times, something he owes partly to the ‘calm environment’ onsite.

With so much valuable experience under his belt and a friendly, approachable nature, the Aspire members at The Observatory are lucky to have David on board.

When he’s not keeping track of things at The Observatory, David spends much of his time at the local gym. Speak to him about his passions offsite and it becomes clear that keeping fit is a key drive in David’s life. For several years, he pursued boxing, kickboxing and karate, until an unfortunate shoulder injury. This couldn’t keep David down for long, however, as he still finds time for long walks and jogging outdoors, activities that he enjoys as well as others that also help him to keep fit.

24 Southwark Bridge Road JUST A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY FROM LANDMARKS SUCH AS THE TATE MODERN AND WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF OTHERS LIKE THE SHARD, 24 SBR IS BASED NEAR SOME OF LANDSEC’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS SITES. BUT IT’S HERE, SOUTH OF THE RIVER, THAT STAFF RELATIONSHIPS HAVE BEGUN TO SOAR BETWEEN LANDSEC, THEIR SERVICE PROVIDERS AND CUSTOMERS ALIKE.

eing close to other Landsec sites such as New Street Square and Ludgate Hill, keeps 24 Southwark Bridge Road firmly in the centre of the Aspire community. This also means that it is just a short journey for staff members like Operations Support Assistant Ross Wiles if they are ever needed at other London properties. With such an ideal location, it’s no wonder that 24 SBR has been chosen as a venue for so many functions in the past, such as the ‘Book People’ charity event. It was also here that Landsec was first able to engage the ‘Bounce Back’ charity’s Painting and Decorating Service. This allowed them to not only support a good cause but also engaged them in their day to day business, giving a valuable opportunity to those wanting to get back into work. What really makes 24 SBR so attractive is the unrivalled customer experience that the Aspire team provides there every day. Security Officer Hanif Mohammad comments that ‘everyone I work with in this building is like family’, with everyone willing to go out of their way to help each other.

This even extends to Landsec customers such as Teaching Personnel on the 3rd floor right up to groups like Sedex on the top floor. Every person working there clearly has a great relationship with Aspire members throughout the building, acting more like a group of old friends than just work colleagues. Meanwhile, people like Cleaner Anna-Maria Corqian work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the place looking spotless and are an ‘absolutely brilliant contribution to the team’, Ross Wiles comments. Even whilst operating outside the spotlight, their commitment and professionalism are as valued here as any other person’s role. The hard-working Aspire members based at 24 SBR have set a brilliant example for the rest of the team. The connections they have built with fellow team members and customers alike, have continued to form bonds not just onsite but across the rest of the city as well.

ULTIMATE SECURITY, 24 SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD

Hanif Mohammad THE FACE OF SOUTHWARK BRIDGE Often seen at the main reception desk, Hanif Mohammad of Ultimate Security always has a smile for every single person who comes to 24 Southwark Bridge Road. In the four years he has been working onsite, he has become one of the key figures that links everyone together. Since he first started, Hanif has been an individual willing to go the extra mile for his colleagues. His hard work, commitment and can-do attitude meant that he was quickly able to integrate into the team. He has continued to further his knowledge and skills, and has now become ‘the go-to man’ of the team, as Operations Support Assistant Ross Wiles comments. Ross also mentions that he never has to worry about proceedings at 24 SBR, even if he’s working away from the site, as Hanif ‘is more than capable of keeping things under control, confident in his ability to assess and deal with any situation

that might arise’. As someone who is always happy to assist with any task, it’s easy to see why every customer, visitor and Aspire member onsite will always have something positive to say about Hanif. He was also a great source of support with the ‘Bounce Back’ scheme. When its painting and decorating crew began works at the site, Hanif was always on hand to help their team in any way he could. He did this whilst also managing his usual responsibilities at reception and around the rest of the building, demonstrating his willingness to go out of his way to provide the best service possible.

In his spare time, Hanif is often on the move as he spends much of his time travelling around the country. He’ll often go for weekend journeys to visit friends, or just to explore new places. He also has a keen interest in fishing, which has helped to develop his stable, patient character. Sometimes, he even gets the chance to combine his two hobbies by going out sea fishing, as part of longer trips. With such a great working relationship with everyone he deals with and his reliability, Hanif remains an anchor for the rest of the team at 24 SBR. 25

WINNER: Shamim Ahmed - Corps Security, One New Change

S

ometimes a moment of observation and a bit of initiative is all it takes to prevent a serious incident at the workplace. In some cases, it can even be the difference between life and death, as Security Officer Shamim Ahmed proved just recently when he was faced with a life-threatening situation. It was an ordinary day for Shamim at One New Change, where he was patrolling the rooftop, when he noticed a woman walking on the grassed area. As this is forbidden to the public, Shamim called out to her to step back, approaching her as he did so. The woman, however, ignored his attempts to reason with her and continued to move forward.

Just as Shamim was radioing control, the situation quickly escalated when the woman actually stepped onto the rooftop barrier, ready to jump off the edge. Fortunately, Shamim was able to grab her and pull her back to safety preventing her from falling the six floors down to the ground below. Once she was safe, Shamim consoled the lady while the control room staff contacted the emergency services to ensure she

While it would be easier to just stand by, he will always go out of his way to help his teammates in certain situations.
