ONE MESSAGE FROM

The Steering Committee

Welcome to a New Year of unity AS WE MOVE INTO 2018 REFRESHED AND READY FOR EVERYTHING THAT THE NEW YEAR MAY BRING, WE MUST ALWAYS BE AWARE THAT THERE WILL CHALLENGES AHEAD AND TIMES THAT WILL TEST OUR SKILLS AND OUR ABILITY TO WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM.

The 2017 Three Peaks Challenge brought many service providers together.

With this in mind, we hope that every member of staff, no matter which department they belong to or where they are working, will display the same level of dedication and efficiency that we saw in 2017. Again, as before, there will also be much to look forward to throughout the year ahead. A whole range of exciting Aspire events are already being organised, including the upcoming Annual Aspire Quiz Night, news of which has been passed on to you all in this magazine. With these events, we look forward to bringing our team even closer together, not only to provide the best customer service possible but to create a better working environment for everyone. 2018 is a year for new possibilities, for us and our service providers, with new chances to improve and to develop. And with such a successful, united team that the Aspire movement has created, we have every reason to be optimistic for the future.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU NOVA’S EYE IN THE SKY MADISON, AS SHE IS KNOWN TO THE REST OF THE TEAM, HAS BECOME THE LATEST STAR AT THE NOVA SITE IN VICTORIA AND THE FIRST NON-HUMAN MEMBER OF THE ASPIRE TEAM. KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE FROM THE LEDGES AND ROOFTOPS, SHE HAS BECOME SOMETHING OF A MASCOT FOR THE OTHER MEMBERS ONSITE. Madison is a 9 year-old Harris Hawk, a bird which is native to South America and Mexico, but Madison is different as she was bred and in the UK and has excelled here. Harris Hawks are exceptional flyers and are the only birds of prey that hunt in packs in the wild. This makes Madison great at working in a team, as she considers her human ‘colleagues’ as part of a pack and is therefore less likely to fly off on her own.

Victoria A birds eye view of

After receiving extensive training, Madison is capable of working for up to six hours per day, hunting for any potential prey. Although she is rarely seen onsite, she has been spotted on several occasions at the beginning of the day by members of The Nova Buildings concierge and cleaning teams, racing across the sky or perched on the rooftops above.

VIGILANCE IS KEY FOR MEMBERS OF SECURITY, VIGILANCE AND THE ABILITY TO ACT QUICKLY ARE ESPECIALLY VITAL. WITHOUT THESE, CRIMES CAN EASILY LEAD TO POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS.

Hanif Mohammad and Ross Wiles spring into action at 24 SBR

Fortunately, Security Officer Hanif Mohammad recently did the Aspire team proud by demonstrating both vigilance and quick thinking. Hanif was based at the entrance of 24 Southwark Bridge Road when he saw a cyclist pushed off his bicycle by a man in front of the building. While the unfortunate cyclist was on the ground, the other man attempted to steal the bike and he may well have succeeded if Hanif hadn’t been so quick to act. Joined by several others in the area, Hanif immediately sprang to the cyclist’s aid, causing the would-be thief to abandon the bike and flee the scene. 4

AspireAsOne.co.uk

Hanif was fast enough to not only succeed in deterring this man but also to take a photo of the culprit. After checking that the fallen cyclist was OK, he returned to his post to report the incident. Operations Support Assistant Ross Wiles recognised the professionalism of Hanif’s approach and the care he displayed for members of the public that day.

@AspireAsOne

Members of staff who cycle to work are encouraged to still do so. It’s an effective way to stay fit and showers are helpfully provided for staff at most Landsec sites. Even so, it is important to stay safe above all else and, like Hanif, to remain vigilant towards any potential dangers.

QUIZ FROM 6PM Harrild and Sons, 26 Farringdon St, London EC4A 4AB

Q.

What team has organised their annual Quiz Night for Tuesday 13th March? (Answer at the bottom of this page)

Aspire members from all over London are invited to put on their thinking caps for this year’s eagerly awaited Aspire Quiz Night. Split into teams of six, 15 teams will go head to head in what is sure to be a battle of the brains.

A raffle will also be held on the night, with all proceeds going to The Honeypot Children’s Charity, which provides much-needed support to young carers.

The event will take place on Tuesday 13th March 2018, from 6pm to 10pm, in the stylish underground bar at Harrild and Sons, Farringdon (near Ludgate).

If you and your team of masterminds think you have what it takes, or if you just want to get involved in the fun, please don’t hesitate to email aspire@landsec.com to request a Quiz Night Entry Form.

There will be eight rounds of quizzing, each with its own different topic, to really test the knowledge of participants.

Spaces are limited for this event so it is being run on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

A. Aspire of course, and you’re invited! Limited spaces 6

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU

The Zig Zag Building A UNIQUE SPACE, IN AN AMAZING PLACE AS THE SECOND MOST RECENT LANDSEC DEVELOPMENT, BEHIND THE NOVA BUILDING, THE ZIG ZAG BUILDING HAS BEEN A MAJOR HUB OF ACTIVITY EVER SINCE IT FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS MORE THAN TWO YEARS AGO. A GREAT FEAT OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING IN ITS OWN RIGHT, IT IS EASY TO SEE WHY IT HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER SPACES IN VICTORIA.

Zaheer Assam reveals his favourite part of the day.

hile the design and modern interiors of the site are impressive, what’s more impressive is the team ethos that is clearly present here. Within the main foyer alone, one can easily find members from NJC, Ultimate Security and Office Concierge working together effectively.

Romina-Nicoleta Caraba is cheery and very modest about the important role she plays.

Security Guards Zaheer Assam has been one of the faces of The Zig Zag Building since day one, providing a warm welcome to every person that steps through its doors, in addition to his usual duties. Fellow Security Guard Robert Loughram, who has worked at several locations all over the city, comments that he ‘really likes the atmosphere’ at The Zig Zag Building and the general sense of teamwork. Meanwhile, Cleaning Supervisor Romina-Nicoleta Caraba and other members of the cleaning staff can often be seen working in this area. Cheery and very modest about the important role she plays, Romina works tirelessly, while asking for no recognition or reward, with her fellow NJC staff member Monica Lazur to ensure the area is kept spotless.

The team working at the main reception desk are kept busy with the almost constant stream of visitors, contractors and Landsec customers. Frankie Marziano (front cover), who has been based there only since November 2017, has integrated remarkably well into the team and already been seen in attendance at events such as the recent Aspire Beach Ball. Part of this is due to how quickly she has become friends with fellow Receptionist Elina Mickevica, who started back in February 2016 and has become a source of inspiration for the rest of the team. Elina’s work has clearly been appreciated not only by her colleagues but by several of the Landsec customers based onsite as well, having received praise in recognition of her outstanding contributions. As they are ‘the first port of call’, Elina comments, she understands just how important their roles are as members of the Front of House staff. NJC Portfolio Manager Charles Walden and Service Support Manager Irina Croitoru, on the other hand, are both recognisable to nearly everyone onsite, given that they work both at the centre of things and behind the scenes as well.

Irina in particular, who is based at The Zig Zag Building, knows ‘just about everyone’. Her knowledge of so many staff members by face as well as by name across the different departments onsite, means she is easily able to find the best person for the job when difficulties arise. Friendly, enthusiastic and always willing to help, she has developed a great rapport with her fellow members of staff. While Zaheer, Elina and the other members of the team work on the front lines, some of Aspire’s unsung heroes can be found on the lower levels of the building. For a site as prestigious as The Zig Zag Building, one might expect a large team of people overseeing building works and general maintenance.

The truth, however, is that there are only three onsite engineers, all belonging to NG Bailey. Equipped with all the materials they need and led by Engineering Supervisor Mark Rosamond, they have been working together as a small, highly efficient unit for over eighteen months. Over this period, they have developed excellent working relationships as they are easily able to rely on one another under pressure. Being responsible for so much that goes on each day, from general building checks to responding to request calls, it is only thanks to their unwavering team spirit and hard work that the place has been kept running with so few members. Managing a site as busy as The Zig Zag Building is a tall order, but with a brilliant collective effort, the Aspire team based onsite have been able to keep things running smoothly. In doing so, Landsec and their Service Providers have once again demonstrated what can be achieved when they

NG BAILEY, THE ZIG ZAG BUILDING

Based on the lower levels of The Zig Zag Building, Engineering Supervisor Mark Rosamond has been leading the onsite engineering team since the site first opened its doors more than two years ago. Having worked with Landsec for over 10 years, Mark claims ‘he has worked on nearly all of their sites at one point or another’. Working with fellow engineering staff Allan Adams (right) and Paul, it’s up to Mark to oversee the maintenance of the site. As it is a relatively new estate with so much to consider each day, there is ‘never a dull moment’, he comments. Whenever any changes or developments are made to the building, it’s up to Mark to be there to ‘witness’ these in order to ensure that the works are carried out correctly and that certain standards are met. Unfortunately, duty does not always call during usual working hours and Mark has often had to

respond to calls at unsociable hour including days over the weekend. It’s a demanding role that carries huge responsibilities, but Mark is able to take it all in his stride. Even when things are at their busiest, he remains a good-humoured, approachable member of the team, never letting the pressures of his role affect him. Mark is kept just as busy outside of work, dedicating much of his spare time to his family. Despite this, he still maintains an interest in photography and still hopes one day to build his own custom camera. This would allow him to experiment with different parts,

applying the same mechanical mind that has made him so effective as a member of NG Bailey. Mark also used to be a semi-professional singer, working at a variety of different gigs and venues before hanging up his mic to commit to his family and his career in engineering. Despite the demands of his role, Mark continues to provide the very highest standards of service with a smile.

IN HER SHORT TIME WORKING ONSITE, IRINA HAS COME TO KNOW JUST ABOUT EVERYONE. SHE DESCRIBES MOVING TO THE UK AS ‘THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE’

In focus with

Irina Croitoru

NJC, THE ZIG ZAG BUILDING

ENGAGING WITH ASPIRE IN FULL Although she only started at the Zig Zag Building less than a year ago, Service Support Manager Irina Croitoru has already become absolutely central to the team. Working both behind the scenes and at the front of operations to become familiar with the whole Aspire team, her enthusiasm, professionalism and friendly nature have not gone unnoticed by her colleagues. In her short time working onsite, she has come ‘to know just about everyone’, she comments. This extends not only to her NJC colleagues but also with Aspire members of other Service Providers as well. The fact that she has previously worked at Bywaters meant that she already knew Aspire members such as Senior Client Relationship Manager Solomon Jackson. This meant making connections across the wider Aspire team much easier.

recent Aspire Beach Ball, in particular, was ‘a great success’, and even donned a pink top for the evening. Focused and always looking to the future, Irina hit the ground running after coming to the UK from Romania,

Irina is an individual who has achieved so much in such a small amount of time and is excellent example of someone who is able to adapt quickly and give her all in everything she does.

Irina has engaged with the Aspire ideology in full, having attended various events such as the Aspire Quiz Night 2017. She thought the

which she describes as ‘the best decision I’ve ever made’. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she immediately set out to find work. With her spirit, determination and general enthusiasm, she has continued to go from strength to strength. But as much as she loves the UK, Irina also has a deep passion for all things American, from TV shows such as ‘Power’ and ‘New Girl’ to several music artists. She looks forward one day to visiting the country, particularly Miami and Los Angeles.
