ONE MESSAGE FROM

The Steering Committee KPI Scorecards - Self-Assessment Made Easy FOLLOWING ON FROM THE NAMING OF OUR ASPIRE CHAMPIONS, THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR SCHEME IMPROVEMENTS WILL BE FOCUSING ON ISSUING EACH WORKING GROUP WITH KPI SCORECARDS, WHICH THEY CAN THEN USE TO ASSESS THEIR TEAM’S PERFORMANCE. KPI Scorecards will be collected and used as part of the monthly feedback for each service stream. Thanks to the ‘How to Assess Your Standards’ booklets we have created, there should be no grey areas when it comes to using the KPI Scorecards. Their aim is to make the process of selfassessment as simple as possible. The scores we get from these will play an important part in future discussions, namely in determining how we use our services and even how we operate on a wider scale across all our sites. In the event that there are still queries about any part of this, then all you need to do is contact your Aspire Champion. We have to remember that before improvement, there must come assessment and evaluation. Everything we have been doing as part of the KPI scheme brings us closer to providing a better customer experience.

KPI Scorecard Assessment Criteria booklets can be requested via the Document Centre on our Aspire website. Joe Thomson Landsec Administrator for Waste Management and Landscaping.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU CONSTANT VIGILANCE KEY AT CARDINAL TIME AND TIME AGAIN, WE ARE REMINDED OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY AND SECURITY. With this in mind, Cardinal Estate Security Manager Jeff Adams from Ultimate recently carried out a penetration test at 100 Victoria Street. After spotting NJC Cleaner Sandra De Oliveira alone, Jeff tapped on the glass door and indicated that he wanted to be allowed in to visit the Head Office of Landsec on Level 1. Despite recognising Jeff, Sandra didn’t simply let him through. After greeting him, she politely asked to see his security pass. Jeff tried to persuade the reluctant Sandra, claiming that he had misplaced his pass and that she knew him as a member of security. Even so, Sandra remained firm, replying ‘I am sorry sir but I cannot allow anybody access without a security pass’. Jeff then presented his pass and explained to Sandra that he was extremely impressed with her vigilance and commitment to security. Well done Sandra, keep up the good work! NJC’S SUPERHEROES ASSEMBLE On 13th May, NJC’s Charles Walden (Portfolio Manager), Francisca Cumbicus Jaramillo (Service Support Manager) and Cosmin Alexandru Boanghes (Estate Supervisor) committed themselves to something truly heroic. Reaching for their tights and capes, they assembled with 3,000 other crime fighters for the annual ‘Do it for Charity’ Superhero Run. The amazing adventure took place in the beautiful setting of Regent’s Park, where eagle eyed spectators witnessed crowds of Spidermen, Batmen, Wonder Women, and even the odd Bananaman. Although runners were encouraged to bring their own outfits, free costumes were also available. The scenic route around the park was 5km, although Superheroes were given the option to fly around the track twice as an alternative 10km challenge. In the 26 years that this extraordinary event has been running, the Superhero Run has managed to raise over £118

million for different charities, a marvel in its own right. Francisca, Charles and Cosmin performed their own superhuman feat by smashing their original target with a POW! and raising a BOOM’ing! £840. All funds raised will go to The Honeypot Children’s Charity, which provides support to young carers and vulnerable children. A special thanks to everyone who supported the three runners and to them for participating in such a special event.

WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU

Always One Step Ahead IN 2016, LANDSEC PARTNERED WITH THE STEP AHEAD PROGRAMME TO HELP SKILLED PEOPLE STRIDE PROUDLY BACK INTO THE WORKPLACE. SINCE THEN, WE HAVE BEEN STRIVING TO MAKE IT SMOOTHER THAN EVER FOR NEW RECRUITS TO BECOME FUTURE EMPLOYEES. WE TAKE AN INSIGHT INTO WHY THE PROGRAMME CHAMPIONED BY ASPIRE IS NOW SUCH A HUGE SUCCESS ACROSS THE CITY.

DURING THE LAST FINANCIAL YEAR WE HELPED 101 PEOPLE INTO WORK IN LONDON, 30 OF WHICH WERE POSITIONED IN ROLES WITHIN OUR ASPIRE PARTNERS AND VICTORIA RETAILERS

STEP AHEAD HAVE OVER 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN GETTING PEOPLE BACK TO WORK

S

tep Ahead seeks to match properly recruited, skilled personnel within a variety of professional roles.

By tailoring the recruitment process to each individual’s needs, they are able to identify a person’s strengths or weaknesses and train them to fit a position that will suit them best. With over two decades of experience, they have become extremely effective in providing candidates with all the support they need to get back to work. During the last financial year (2017/18) we helped 101 people into work in London, 30 of which were positioned in roles within our Aspire partners and Victoria retailers such as Bywaters, NJC and Office Concierge. Jobs can be at one of Landsec’s many City or West End sites, within their service provider’s overall team or even with other companies in the industry. Additionally, those within the Step Ahead scheme receive training from Landsec to give them the very best chance in the workplace. Mock interviews and recruitment tips, for example, are regularly offered, which have given many candidates a huge boost in their confidence.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

Office Concierge recruited Eleanor Bonney from Step Ahead, she now works at various Landsec sites including 123 Victoria Street.

Trying to find placements for new recruits to work within the industry might have previously been difficult, especially with so many different sites and people involved. Fortunately, Step Ahead’s Sahan De Abrew has made some fantastic contacts, such as Landsec’s Community Manager Ben Anderson, and this has made the recruitment process much smoother. It is thanks to people like Ben and Sahan that the Landsec, Aspire and Step Ahead partnership has been so successful. It has allowed them to build what Sahan calls ‘an absolutely fantastic working relationships’ across the capital. Sahan and the rest of his Step Ahead team are clearly grateful to be partnered TogetherAsOne with Landsec and Aspire. Another person that can be regularly heard singing the praise of the Step Ahead programme is Bywaters Sustainability Manager Scott Porter. Scott is regularly on the lookout for new recruits to join Aspire’s favourite green team and always personally oversees the interview process for any new recruits. He is always grateful for recommendations and advice from Step Ahead but feels it is essential to assess each persons personality himself before integrating them into his team.

TODAY, LANDSEC SECURE AS MANY AS 30 POSITIONS A YEAR FOR STEP AHEAD CANDIDATES

Scott has been working closely with Step Ahead since joining Bywaters almost a year ago and when asked about the people he has employed, he comments that what really sets them apart is ‘the really positive vibe they bring with them to work. You always get the sense that they are happy to be getting back into work and learning new skills’. A prime example is Bywaters Waste Operator Astley Pink, who has been working with Scott for just over three months. His willingness to help, cheery nature and reliability have made him a credit to both his team and the Step Ahead programme. Despite only being with Bywaters for a short amount of time, Astley has made a great impact.

David Griffin joined NJC through the Step Ahead Recruitment scheme. In February 2018, his dedication to the role earned him an Aspire Player of the Month Award for ‘Exceptional Contribution’.

He already has a key role, personally overseeing the recycling process across two buildings. Since he started, the amount of efficiently recycled materials has increased significantly. By taking on new members of staff like Astley, Bywaters has been ‘working well ahead of schedule’, Scott comments, sometimes reaching their annual targets months in advance. As these new Step Ahead recruitments have proved themselves time and time again, managers like Scott have developed a great deal of trust in the programme. With results like these, it is clear that this partnership is beneficial not only to the people getting back to work but to Landsec and its service providers as well. It’s not just Step Ahead recruits that end up at Bywaters, as Andreanna Coley explains! 8

T

he elegant new Front of House outfit has been uniquely designed by Charlote Stiffell, a company with a great reputation for designing high quality uniforms using great British fabrics. Designers were asked to create a new image for the team, one that included the classic ‘Aspire colours’. Although a lilac trim was originally chosen, this was later improved by introducing a bolder, more confident, fuschia pink to complement the navy blue which instantly made the uniforms sharper and more sophisticated. During the selection process, members of Aspire were given a choice of three unique style options, but we’re sure you’ll agree that the final design is the one that really adds the required class to the team’s image. There is no doubting the future success of the new range, with such an invaluable contribution from the fashionistic members of Aspire. Senior Client Services Manager Alison Currell, of Office Concierge, commented that they have received great feedback on the modern new approach from the rest of the team. In the near future NJC will also be following suit, changing the piping of their uniforms to match that used by NG Bailey

and Office Concierge. They will also be adding the Aspire logo to the uniform, as well as referencing the service streams of ‘Cleaning’ or ‘Engineering’. Clearly, these new uniforms have been redesigned with the modern new Landsec branding in mind, but by also integrating Aspire’s vibrant approach we’ve brought a fresh new identity to the whole team. Some sites have been lucky enough to receive their new uniforms already, but every site is expected to have them by 11th June. The reception staff at The Zig Zag Building and the Nova Estate will be exceptions to this, as their uniforms will be site exclusives. This is a very exciting period of change for the Aspire team, and we look forward to seeing you modelling our new style across the London portfolio.

Portfolio Manager Charles Walden commented that this was a great example of resolving a situation ‘with a minimum impact for the customers’.

G

It was just another day at 123 Victoria Street when Cleaner Peter Peter received a report of vandalism. Upon arriving at the scene, he discovered that the vandals had sprayed graffiti on the external panels of the building.

After contacting the rest of the team, Peter worked for three hours to remove the ‘tag’ from the wall. He took every necessary step to ensure that customers and members of the public were diverted away from the scene, something that was praised by Hiren Patel, 123 VS Operations Manager.

An alarm had been ringing on the lower levels of the site that the customer had been unable to identify. While a guard was quickly sent to investigate, Ross knew exactly who to call. Sure enough, after speaking to Hanif about what could have set this alarm off, Ross’s mind was soon set at ease. It seemed that the situation resolved itself, however, Ross was still pleasantly surprised when he received an email

ASPIRE FREE POSITIVITY AND MINDFULNESS WORKSHOPS HAVE HELPED PEOPLE TO REDUCE STRESS BOTH AT WORK AND IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES

60 Ludgate Hill.

B

etween 14th-20th May, people all over the UK came together in aid of Mental Health Awareness Week. This year, the focus was on stress, which is one of the key causes of mental problems.

Kings Gate.

Stress is something that can seem unavoidable, especially in a big city environment. Even in a friendly office environment with a reliable team, it can unfortunately become a part of our daily lives. It could be unforeseen incidents in the workplace or something as simple as train delays in the morning, but before long the pressure builds up. If stress is allowed to increase, it can have serious consequences both physically and mentally. In the fastpaced world of today, it is important to raise as much awareness as possible of stress but also what can be done to combat it. Landsec has proudly been supporting the fight by getting behind the Green Ribbon 18

One New Change.

Campaign of the Mental Health Week. All week the Aspire team showed a great community spirit with togetherness and positive communication being recognised as a vital part of maintaining good mental health and wellbeing. Every ribbon worn by every member of staff was a sign of support for this and all the ideas behind it. It was terrific to see so many individuals taking part at sites across London and to see them promoting the #endthestigma campaign on Twitter. The staff at One New Change made a special effort to show their support, donning green ties that matched the campaign ribbons. In the continual fight against mental health problems in the City Aspire’s LearnAsOne team have also continued to show support for those most at risk from the issues of pressure. A great example of this has been the recent FREE Positivity and Mindfulness workshops, which aimed to help individuals improve their positivity and reduce stress both at work and in their personal lives. After receiving a great level of positive feedback and support from members, Aspire has continued to host workshops, with the most recent one held on 24th May. Congratulations to everyone who took part in raising awareness for Mental Health Week and for fighting against stress. With an act as simple as wearing a green ribbon, you have made a huge difference to awareness. One New Change even changed the roof lights in support.
