WE’RE ALL ABOUT YOU ASPIRE PENETRATION TESTS - Caution Keeps Colleagues Safe IT CAN BE EASY IN A BUSY WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT TO OVERLOOK SMALL DETAILS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE WORKING AT A LOCATION WITH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE PASSING THROUGH EACH DAY.

E

ven so, a moment’s oversight can make a huge difference when it comes to the safety of everyone onsite.

For this reason undercover Aspire Penetration Tests (APT) have been introduced, to identify areas that might need improving and to generally help improve security across the whole portfolio. Mohammed Jalloh from NJC (Right), was carrying out his usual duties down in the basement level of New Street Square when he discovered somebody walking around. Although he let the man continue, Mohammed remained cautious and kept a watchful eye on him. Before long, Mo followed his gut feeling and approached the visitor, questioning his reason for being onsite. At this point, the intruder revealed the real reason for his visit and that he was one of the APT team. Meanwhile, at Ludgate, Michelle Scannell was walking the loading bay

when she became aware of a stranger hovering across the road. With so many deliveries each day, the loading bay entrance could make for an easy way to slip in but thanks to Michelle’s eagle eye for detail, the undercover APT had no opportunity to breach the building.

Both Mohammed and Michelle received positive feedback for their cautious approach. It should be remembered, as Mohammed proved, that you don’t have to be a member of security to help keep your site secure.

NJC DRESSES DOWN FOR THE OCCASION On Friday 27th July, summer dresses, sandals and casual shirts were the order of the day for the NJC team. This was part of their sponsored ‘Dress Down Friday’ event, with all proceeds going towards The Honeypot House New Forest Refurbishment Project. Those taking part were able to raise £70 for the cause, an impressive amount in such little time. Better still, NJC matched all £5 donations across the board, which brought the grand total raised for this event alone to £125. The Honeypot Children’s Charity provides young carers with the support they desperately need, including the resources necessary for the future works at Honeypot sites across the country.

Flood Fails to Dampen Nova’s Team Spirit

T

ime and time again, the Aspire team has demonstrated that it can deal with cases of emergency. With the fluid teamwork between Aspire members of all departments and the right facilities, every instance of leakage has been dealt with swiftly and efficiently. But in July, the team at Nova faced what was probably the most serious case of flooding the site has experienced to date. On the night of 5th, a flood broke out in Nova North. It was not until the following day, on the Friday, that the flooding was discovered by a member of Ultimate Security. By this point, water had reached as far down as level B4 and had by now begun to pose a serious threat to the buildings electrical system. Wasting no time, the security team radioed to alert members of NJC, Jaguar (Nova’s exclusive engineer team) and Landsec management to the flooding. In a matter of minutes, the cleaning staff were on the scene, leading the charge armed with spill kits. Ultimate Security went beyond their

usual duties as they waded in alongside NJC to clean up the water before it could cause serious damage. Operations Manager Jack Kelly commented that ‘if it weren’t for NJC, the situation would have been much, much worse’. Unfortunately, the water had spread further than first suspected and after being informed that the building’s electrical ‘busbar’ had been affected, Landsec Management including Jack and Technical Manager Anthony Box were faced with a huge decision. As the busbar is an essential element in electrical power distribution for buildings such as Nova North, shutting off the unit would result in half of the building losing electrical power. Naturally, this would cause a major disruption for the Landsec customers onsite as it was difficult to predict accurately how long it would be before everything could be up and running again. Even so, Landsec put the safety of their colleagues and the customers first by powering down the building. The team did a great job of maintaining communications from the time the incident was discovered, giving Landsec customers plenty of warning before the shutdown so that they could make any preparations they needed. Customers were very grateful for this open approach and understanding the seriousness of the situation, were more than happy to follow the instructions issued.

On the Saturday, as the Jaguar team searched for urgent answers, a full investigation was carried out to determine what could be repaired and what needed replacing. Even though NG Bailey do not cover the Nova site, one phone call was all it took for them to provide the vital extra tools and materials that Jaguar needed. This show of consideration is what Aspire and the ‘one team ethos’ is all about, with Anthony Box commenting ‘such close team spirit is something I’ve only ever experienced with Landsec. This co-operation between service providers would not have been achieved without Aspire’. While the Aspire member involved had to work overtime to deal with the incident, some members of the Jaguar team worked 17-hour shifts to oversee proceedings. After extensive communications and busy long nights, most of the power had been restored by the following Monday evening. General Manager David Payne had nothing but praise for the efforts of the team, in particular for the way they handled the communications. It was a brilliant example of how Aspire can overcome massive challenges, and everyone involved should be extremely proud of themselves. For a ‘monumental Aspire team effort’, David Payne nominated the Nova Flood Team for special recognition in this month Aspire awards. See page 11.

The Kitchen Garden Project Brings Nova Food to Life

M

onday 20th August marked the launch of The Kitchen Garden project as part of Nova Food. Running until Saturday 8th September, the Nova team have worked tirelessly to make all of this happen, combining culinary delights with the very best botanic events. As Nova Food offers everything from sourdough pizzas at Franco Manca to Nordic-French cuisine at Aster, it was the perfect location for this new project. Nova’s stylish food area is split into five different sections for guests. The Herb Garden has a variety of beautiful and aromatic plants on display, some of which are used in the very kitchens of the onsite Nova restaurants. The Lavender Lounge and The Secret Garden instead offer spaces for people to reflect, unwind and take part in wellbeing activities. The Shed Sessions provide workshops and pop-up experiences where visitors can learn cooking tips from some of Nova Food’s chefs. Finally, The Centre Stage is home to all event performances, with deckchairs set up so visitors can enjoy themselves in comfort.

Jaguar’s Oliver Rumney & Paul Sturt Not content with just the pop-up area, Nova Food has also organised a whole range of interesting and exciting events from now until 8th September. If you’re feeling stressed, why not stop by for one of the Meditation Sessions. For wine and cocktail connoisseurs, there will be special tasting events, while exclusive performances and Q&As take place on the Centre Stage from the stars of London’s best-loved musicals. Ticketed events cost just £5 per person and all proceeds will go to The Cardinal Hume Centre, a local charity which provides support to homeless people and families in need. The Kitchen Garden is open seven days a week (Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 7pm), so there’s no excuse for not joining in the fun. With every stage signposted and the Aspire team on hand to point visitors in the right direction, the event is destined to be a great success. The Kitchen Garden saw a huge turnout in the first week and with so many more highlights to look forward to, there are no signs of it slowing down. ASPIRE STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS ASPIRE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

July ‘18

F

ollowing the major July flooding at Nova North, the whole team has been congratulated for ensuring the incident was dealt with as quickly as possible. There were 13 individuals, said General Manager David Payne, who were truly invaluable for the services they provided that day. Jack Kelly and Tony Box did a great job coordinating everyone’s efforts, providing direction and overseeing the repairs every step of the way. James Gladding and Dean Brown, from NG Bailey, were happy to source the materials needed to complete the works, even though they work independently of the Nova site. Finally, the staff from Jaguar stayed well beyond their usual

hours to ensure everything could be up and running again as soon as possible. Thanks to this extraordinary display, there was little damage to the Nova site and general disruption was kept to a minimum. For a ‘monumental Aspire team effort’, as David commented, they have all been nominated for Player of the Month Awards in Teamwork.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

The Aspire team at One New Change were faced with such a situation recently when a woman attempted to take her own life by jumping off the roof of the building. Unfortunately, this was the forth attempt by the same person. Fasil Dagefa and the other members of security, however, immediately spotted the woman and recognised her from the previous attempts. Thanks to the speed of their response and their proficient teamwork, they were able to intercept the woman just as she was coming out the lift and onto the roof level. Even when the individual used force and tried to fight off the members of security, the team remained professional. By the time the police had arrived, the team had succeeded in totally calming her down.

For their swiftness and ability to stay calm under pressure, Operations Manager Celia Bouchut has nominated the whole security team at One New Change for their Respect for the Individual.

Aspire Harriers AS IF THE PEAK DISTRICT CHALLENGE ISN’T ENOUGH, ASPIRE MEMBERS HAVE BEEN SHOWING THAT THEY CAN ALSO GO THE DISTANCE IN OUR NEWLY FORMED RUNNING CLUB.

Some of the Aspire Harriers with Jason Edwards (third from right)

C

reated recently by NJC’s Jason Edwards and the Aspire Operating Board, the Aspire Harriers are looking to cover a total of 300km over the course of just six runs. Two of these runs have already taken place, both at the stunning Victoria Park in London’s East End. But while the first run only had seven participants, the popularity of the club has spread and that number had doubled by the time the second run took place. So far the club has seen runners from Landsec, NJC and Office Concierge, and they hope to see participants from all of Landsec’s service providers in the near future as the club’s popularity continues to grow.

Manager / running club organiser Jason Edwards, perhaps the best example. Adrienne, determined to match Jason’s speed, has given him a run for his money every time. Although she wasn’t successful at the last run, Adrienne has been closing the gap to Jason’s finish time, which he claims has ‘prompted me to train harder than ever!’

Not content with just six runs, most of the athletes taking part have already said that they would love to keep attending the club after the 300km target has been achieved. Clearly, the social element is a key factor here as each run provides a great opportunity to meet new people. At the end of each event, the club plans to go for light refreshments to rest and re-hydrate.

The Aspire Harriers Running Club continues to pick up speed and has seen new faces of varying abilities on each occasion. With the long term aim of the club to help members keep fit and get to know other people, every Aspire member is welcome at future events. If you would like to attend an event or simply require further information please email Jason Edwards at NJC on jedwards@njcdna.com

Of course, this is not to say there hasn’t been a more competitive edge as well. Even though it is only two runs in, friendly rivalries have already developed between club regulars with NJC’s Adrienne Bodo and Senior Portfolio 18

NJC, CARDINAL PLACE

In focus with Aspire’s Movie Star

Adrienne Bodo NJC’S ASPIRING TEAM PLAYER

Hi, I’m Adrienne. I keep things spotlessly clean.

When Adrienne Bodo arrived from Romania, becoming a movie star was probably one of the last things on her mind. But thanks to her bright attitude towards work, she has become NJC’s leading lady in the official Aspire Movie and the face of Cleaning across the whole portfolio. Cardinal Place is home to some of Aspire’s most interesting and colourful characters, but you are unlikely to find one with quite as much enthusiasm as Adrienne. Polite, friendly and very practical, her efforts have kept the site looking spotless ever since she started. Although she is not usually the biggest fan of animation, Adrienne was delighted to see her cartoon look-alike in action. As someone who is clearly not afraid of the spotlight, Adrienne is always willing to participate, both inside and outside the workplace. Despite having worked with NJC for less than two years, she has been quick to embrace everything Aspire. She thought the

20

2017 Aspire Beach Ball was a huge success and could be regularly spotted on the dance floor among the event’s brightly coloured performers. Adrienne takes every opportunity to communicate with her colleagues with the aim to advance her English, which has seen a huge improvement. When asked if she is willing to attend almost any sort of Aspire event, her response is simply ‘why not?’, demonstrating her kean willingness to become a great team player. ginee

ring

Although she is bright and happy at work, Adrienne shows a more competitive side when it comes to sports and physical activities.

AspireAsOne.co.uk

AspireAsOneTeam

Having grown up with three brothers, she admits she can be a bit ‘boyish’ at times. Recently, she has become a force to be reckoned with at the Aspire Harriers Running Club. When she’s not improving the mood of everyone at Cardinal Place, hitting the gym or participating in Aspire events, Adrienne likes to enjoy herself by going out as often as possible with friends. A big fan of 80s and 90s music, Adrienne has seen the live production of ‘ABBA’ and is always up for a dance. Every so often, she makes the effort to go back to Romania, mostly to visit her family but also to enjoy the lively R&B scene. Adrienne absolutely lives up to the idea of ‘Not Just Cleaning’ as her limitless enthusiasm and infectious cheer help to keep Cardinal Place spotless. Whether it’s the end of the working week or first thing Monday morning, she’ll always be there to deliver a smile.

Adam Donoghue LUDGATE’S BRIGHTEST SPARK From NG Bailey apprentice to Site Supervisor to Aspire super stardom, Adam Donoghue has gone from strength to strength as part of the wider team. We take a closer look at some of the qualities that have made him such a key player at Landsec’s Ludgate.

22

Although Adam is now based permanently at Ludgate, he is still known by face and name across much of the London portfolio. One reason for this is that he worked on different Landsec sites as an apprentice. However, most of his fame is the result of his quick wit, hard work and what he calls his ‘no nonsense’ approach. This allowed him to quickly build strong working relationships not just with his colleagues at NG Bailey but with those from Landsec and their other service providers as well.

2018, he was made Site Supervisor. This means that he is now in charge of keeping the whole building running smoothly while communicating with the rest of the engineers onsite.

Combining his interpersonal skills and technical expertise, it wasn’t long before Adam earned the title of Lead Engineer. Just six months later, in July

Given that he is usually office based, Adam was surprised when he was told he would be the face of Engineering in the Aspire Movie. He mentioned that

His new role has brought fresh challenges and greater responsibility, but Adam has adapted quickly to what’s been asked of him. The engineering team at Ludgate has even taken on jobs from other sites when help is required and vice-versa, creating a wider network with the rest of the Aspire team.

he has never considered a career in acting but would certainly be interested to see what all the fuss was about! When asked about his on screen favourites Adam claims he has always been an avid fan of The Simpsons, with Bart standing out as his favourite character. If he had to pick a favourite actor, he would have to choose Matt Damon, especially for his role in the ‘Bourne’ films. Adam has maintained a healthy interest in sports over the years as well. One of Adam’s favourite pastimes is golf, which he has been playing regularly for over five years now. As much as he enjoys his new position at Ludgate, the slow-paced nature of golf gives him a respite from the dynamic work environment he usually faces. Given that the sport requires so much patience and concentration, it also allows him to develop the focus he needs for his working life. While he has never considered jumping in a car and taking to the tracks himself, Adam does also like to watch F1 racing whenever he gets the chance. With such good working relationships, focus and determination, it’s no wonder Adam has worked his way up so quickly. The relationships he has built with the rest of the team and his willingness to help are exactly the qualities that are championed by Aspire.
