THE ASPIRE HARRIERS KEEP ON GIVING There has been an excited buzz to the AspireHarriers recently. On 2nd December, Senior Portfolio Manager Jason Edwards and the rest of the Harriers team gathered with thousands of others for the most festive run of the year.
AspireHarriers Running Club
All money raised will go straight to the Honeypot Children’s Charity. In addition to providing young carers with the help they deserve, the charity will also use this money to hand deliver a present to every Honeypot Child as part of their Christmas Road Show. The Honeypot team reached out to Aspire for its support, and with over £600 now raised, they have gone well beyond the original £500 target. Even so, donations keep coming in and there is still time to show your support at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ aspireharriers

n 11th December, over 90 Aspire members were invited to the Sway bar, located in the heart of Holborn. By 1pm, nearly everyone had assembled in the main bar area as the final preparations for the event were made. The black, leather seating booths, neon backlit bar and dimmed mood lighting really set the tone for the awards ceremony and Sway It Cool party later that day. As event organisers Amanda Heppelthwaite from NJC and Kelly Barlow from Landsec ran a few lastminute checks, guests were invited to sip Prosecco as they greeted each other and chatted excitedly, eager for the main Awards ceremony to begin. They didn’t have to wait long as they were soon politely ushered into the club area, which had been converted into a dining hall. Aspire had thoughtfully prepared a stylish table plan to help people navigate themselves to their seats for the afternoon. In keeping with the ‘Sway it Cool’ swing theme, each table had been cleverly named after a famous singer, actor or actress from the 1950s and 60s.

Celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn and Dean Martin featured among other famous names. Individual name cards, complete with pre-selected menu options, had even been carefully laid out to avoid any dining room confusion. As Aspire members greeted one another and new friendships were quickly formed, the first of the three courses was soon served. Festive favourites, such as bacon-wrapped turkey with vegetables and a rich gravy, were served alongside slow-cooked beef and salmon with crushed potatoes. Just as the desserts were being finished, Aspire showed that they had a few surprises in store. Guests were treated to sing-along covers of ‘That’s Amore’, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Nessun Dorma’, much to their delight. Everyone present was invited to join in, swaying in time to the classics and even providing vocals in some cases. It was all singing, all dancing and certainly ended the meal on a high note. But the best was yet to come as Landsec General Manager David Wickens took to the stage, commenting that ‘today is a celebration of all the work you’ve done over the past year’. Before David’s presentation began, a 3 minute movie celebrating Landsec and their service partners was played to the sound of the iconic Stereophonics song ‘Dakota’. With chorus lyrics ‘You made

Sebastian Barriga and Ian Burr.
One by one, each of the award categories, representing a core Aspire value, was presented by a different Aspire guest. In every case, the two finalists were introduced along with a brief outline of why they had been nominated for the award. The winners were announced and each was greeted with a resounding burst of applause as they stepped up to receive their prize. Each of the winners were awarded with both a £100 love2shop voucher and an Aspire ‘a’ trophy while runners-up received a £50 voucher. The final category for the Chairman’s Award was presented by Landsec’s Head of Property Management, Ian Burr. Before revealing the winner of the final prize, he took a moment to congratulate all the other nominees for their ‘fantastic effort’ and encouraged the whole Aspire team ‘to keep getting bigger and better every year’. Ultimately it was Sebastian Barriga who was called up to receive the coveted award for his exceptional, allround performance throughout the year. The Aspire Recognition Awards were a chance not just to award those who had gone above and beyond but for the team to reflect on 2018. As the deserving winners were congratulated by their colleagues, everyone returned to the main bar area where the real party would soon begin. 8

Amanda Heppelthwaite AT THE HEARTBEAT OF ASPIRE At every Aspire event, there is always one face you can be sure to see. This is because NJC Executive Assistant Amanda Heppelthwaite has played an essential part in making Aspire what it is today. Amanda has been working at the centre of all things Aspire for over two years now, a position that has been challenging but one that she has fully applied herself to. At the Aspire Derby II event, Amanda was there giving her support to teammates on the pitch and providing the refreshments for everyone off the pitch. She played a huge role in organising the Peak District Challenge in September, co-ordinating the teams and helping to make the necessary preparations for the event months in advance. Along with Kelly Barlow from Landsec, Amanda is sure to arrive at events well before anyone else to make sure everything is in place. She’s Aspire’s first point of contact

for information on future events and is always happy to lend a hand to those who need it. The Christmas period is always a special time of the year for Amanda. She isn’t usually one for karaoke, but she is more than happy to get up and have a dance, especially if Christmas classics or 80s tunes are playing. She even appreciated her part in setting up the tables for the Recognition Awards this year as it helped get her into the holiday spirit. Although Amanda enjoys a game of charades and the more traditional parts of Christmas, she also enjoys going abroad for the holiday season. Last year she was in New York in time for Boxing Day, being a big fan of the atmosphere over there. This year she’ll be travelling

to Mexico with her family and friends for a well-deserved break from the cold weather. Even though she won’t be in the UK for Christmas, she’ll be sure to have a few carols and crackers on the 25th. Both on the centre stage and behind the scenes, Amanda has made exceptional contributions to Aspire as a whole. We wish her a relaxing break during the holiday season and look forward to seeing her at future Aspire events. 9 7

he tropical paradise from last year’s Beach Ball had been traded for a cool, bustling, New York-style 60s playground. This year’s ‘Sway It Cool’ event had all the right ingredients to be a classic Aspire night to remember. The Sway Bar in Holborn had been chosen as a venue not only for its excellent drinks selection and its classy sense of style but also for its convenient central location. Based in the heart of the City, it was only a short distance from most Landsec sites so it wasn’t long before the bar was filled with familiar faces from the Aspire team. Those who attended the Recognition Awards Ceremony earlier in the day warmly greeted their friends and colleagues arriving for the evening’s festivities. By 8pm, less than two hours after the official start of the party, the whole venue was packed out, with every person dressed to impress. Some, such as Charles Walden from NJC and Sol Jackson of Bywaters, had made the extra effort to wear the

Aspire colours, both donning pink ties. Everyone looked the part as celebrations went into full swing. The team had even given the venue an Aspire makeover for the occasion as pink, illuminated signs with EnjoyAsOne and PartyAsOne lined the walls. Another advantage of this year’s classy London venue was how it splits into two areas. If Aspire members wanted somewhere brighter where they could talk comfortably while listening to some festive tunes, the main bar area was best. There, people took to discussing plans for the holiday season, trips abroad and hopes for the New Year. Jordon Joseph from Landsec was looking forward to a Christmas Day feast while Barbara Rigano of Office Concierge was already coming up with fresh new ideas for future Ambassador meetings. Meanwhile, the ‘club’ next door had been transformed into a delicious disco area, where a live band kicked things off with some Rat Pack classics sure to get people into the mood.

The lively Jazz quartet soon got Aspire members on the dance floor, intent on showing off their best moves. Having comfortable booths nearby meant that people could always take a break from the dance floor action if needed. A selection of tasty bar snacks was served from around 8pm, ensuring no guest went hungry. Options included mushroom and spinach risotto, fish and chips, or lamb koftas with cous cous. At 9.30pm, the band stepped down and the DJ for the evening appeared on cue to play a range of dance floor classics. The party soon went up a gear as more enthusiastic people swarmed the dance floor. With the DJ booked until well past midnight, this gave Aspire members the chance to let their hair down and dance into the early hours of the morning. The team grooved and laughed the night away at one of the coolest venues in London. With such great company, memorable tunes and a stylish venue, their really is only one team to PartyAsOne and that’s Aspire!

Moses Sune THE JOLLIEST MEMBER OF THE TEAM
You’d be hard pressed to find someone who enjoys Christmas more than Moses Sune. Friendly, approachable and a true lover of the festive period, he was right at home at the Aspire ‘Sway it Cool’ party. As a lifelong jazz fan, Moses was happy enough soaking up the tunes from the live band. Comfortable on the dance floor or simply observing, he always comes across as easy-going, especially when in the company of his fellow Aspire members. Having been with Ultimate Security for over three years now, he has become a friendly, familiar face to everyone he works with.

Moses is looking forward to spending Christmas at home this year, which is always a big family affair for him. The first image that occurs to him when you mention ‘Christmas Day’ is people gathered round a table with a huge turkey in the middle. He’s also excited about catching up on basketball and boxing. A long-time fan of both sports, he made sure he was able to watch the recent ‘Fury vs Wilder’ fight live.

Ever the optimist, Moses is looking forward to 2019, saying that ‘every new year is a new surprise’. Despite the cold, Moses recently visited Perth in Scotland, commenting that the beautiful scenery was well worth the journey. He hopes that he’ll have more trips to look forward to before long. Moses has every reason to look forward to what 2019 holds, ready for new challenges and experiences.

Lilia Lamberto PUTTING THE SPICE INTO CHRISTMAS For HR and Support Services Director Lilia Lamberto, Christmas isn’t Christmas without a touch of Portuguese spice to liven up the holidays. Her professionalism, initiative and team spirit have set a great example for the rest of the team. Lilia began with Principle Cleaning over 15 years ago after moving to London from Portugal. Since then she has never looked back, always applying her skills for the team’s benefit. Under her leadership, the team at One New Change has also gone from strength to strength. When it comes to the festive season, Lilia always puts her own unique twist on celebrations. Instead of the traditional turkey, she usually uses her knowledge of Portuguese cuisine, serving up signature dishes like grilled octopus. As someone

the recent annual Santa Charity Run with her AspireHarriers Running Club colleagues. She also participated in the London Superhero Run, commenting that ‘Black Widow is a favourite’.
Lilia recently had the chance to go abroad to Frankfurt, Germany, where she was able to experience the Christmas markets. With such a wide selection of baked goods and meats, she was able to satisfy her love for food and pick up presents at the same time. For her, the festive season is very much a time of giving and she took part in
Lilia’s willingness to try new approaches has ensured that Christmas is never a dull affair for her or her family. This, combined with her friendly attitude, has made her as much of a success in the workplace as she is in the kitchen.
