WOODBURY CARES PROGRAM
THE EWING-HRASTICH TEAM CARES ABOUT WOODBURY As a family of professionals with over 80 years of combined sales experience, The Ewing & Hrastich Team is proud to support local businesses and residences including their family, friends and clients. Just like their real estate business, the City of Woodbury continues to grow, change, meet and exceed expectations. Her son Tom, Daughter-In-Law Renae, and Grandchildren Nolan and Amanda have since joined the Team. With three generations of fulltime real estate agents, they are able to meet and exceed the growing demands of Woodbury and the East Metro by assisting everyone from first-time home buyers to those looking to sell and transition into their forever homes. As proud and invested members of this community, The Ewing & Hrastich Team are fully engaged and strive to ensure that Woodbury continues to be a great place to live, work and play for generations to come.

A
s a child, the beginning of each May was marked by the gathering of flowers, treats and goodies for a May Day basket. I fondly remember picking flowers from the fields or dandelions, which, at the time, I thought of as a beautiful, easy-to-find flower (not so much as a weed). I would gift these baskets to my friends, teachers, parents and neighbors. All these years later, I still mark the beginning of each May with a bountiful floral arrangement (peonies, tulips and hydrangeas are a few of my favorites). And though I no longer celebrate May Day with the giving of baskets, I still like to drop a few flowers to friends and family around town. This month, we celebrate flowers in a variety of ways. Writer Meghan Bishop spoke with Tara Carlson, owner of Sweet Peas Floral, about flower-filled gifts for—you guessed it—May Day and Mother’s Day (May 9). Flip to page 11 for a DIY May Day basket with inspiration from Sweet Peas Floral; go to page 22 for a floral arrangement breakdown. Also in this issue of Woodbury Magazine, we’re celebrating the ubiquity of spring fashion. On page 24, Wesley Uthus, owner of Primp, breaks down this season’s most stylish trends. On page 36, writer Claire Swenson dives into the sustainability of fashion with Nancy Dilts, a personal shopper who specializes in creating a sustainable wardrobe. So whether you are giving or receiving flowers or got a new outfit for spring, we want to see! Tag us on Instagram or use the hashtag #WoodburyMagazine so we can see and share your signs of spring. Happy May Day and happy Mother’s Day, readers. I’ll see you next month!

NOTEWORTHY local tips, tidbits & insights
DIY May Day Basket BY MEGHAN BISHOP
SUPPLIES: Cardstock paper Glue or tape Chenille stems Ribbon Tulips and small greenery Chocolates • Create your paper cone [or basket] using the cardstock. Cut the paper in half diagonally. Roll the paper together in a cone shape and either glue or tape the sides together. • While holding your cone with the pointy tip facing the ground, at the top punch a hole in each side of cone. String your ribbon through both holes and tie the ends together once your cone can swing a little. • Bend the chenille stems into funky flowers. • Then comes the fun part! Stuff all the goodies into the cone: Tulips, chocolates and other knick knacks.

TASTE
The Art and Style of Supper If there is one thing social media has shown us, it’s that food is a very visual medium. Unlike other types of art, however, food plays to all of the senses—it has sound, texture, aroma and, most uniquely, flavor. As art director for At Home with Kowalski’s, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to make food beautiful, but my interest in making food look as good as it tastes extends beyond my job. In the same way I think about what shade of lipstick might complete my look, I also consider the last touches on the meals I make. Even the most rushed family fare always gets these three final considerations: 1. I start with deciding on a serving dish. Food can look very different depending on the size, shape and color of the dish on which it’s served. I tend to favor white plates with no pattern, and choose a “canvas” that will allow for the composition I’m looking for; it’s never good for food to look crowded
12

but neither do I want to see more of my plate than my meal. 2. I select a garnish or two. Even something as simple as a bit of lemon zest, finishing salt or a sprig of cilantro can turn dinner into dining. Garnishes can provide visual interest, but also textural or temperature contrasts which can heighten the overall experience of a dish. 3. And just as I don’t leave the house before checking to see if my mascara has migrated, I don’t serve supper without checking for spills. I never fail to wipe any splatters or drips from the edges of a plate before taking them to the table. Find Rachael’s recipe for whitefish tacos with chipotle lime crema at woodburymag.com. Muscle Relief Relieve sore muscles with these three tips. Beginning a new workout program is challenging sometimes. Making the time to work out, creating a flexible schedule and setting goals is difficult enough, but include the muscle soreness that comes with adjusting to that new workout, and it may be difficult to remain on track. No matter how you try to dodge soreness, sometimes you will exhaust your body and discover sore muscles you never knew you had after a workout. Exercise-induced muscle soreness can sometimes last a week, but relief can be sped up. Eat Healthy Be sure you are not working out during a calorie shortage, since you need to have sufficient proteins, carbohydrates and fats, all which play vital parts in repairing muscles. Check with your doctor or dietitian for your personal micro- and macro-intake ranges. Stretch Stretching is your first line of defense after a great workout. So remember to stretch while your muscles are still working. A nice five- or 10-minute cool down stretch certainly will not harm your muscles. So go slow, breath and stretch those limbs after every workout. Use a Foam Roller Using a foam roller to rub your sore muscles after a workout can essentially decrease delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), so donate time to each major muscle. Complete at least five rolls, beginning with your calves and working your way up your body. Spend additional time on sore spots.

HAPPINESS AND BEAUTY What does it mean? Those words—happiness and beauty—are vague. I am not sure if it is a direct sensation from our five senses or a hard-to-define emotion. I think it is more of a state of being, which can encompass all the things that happen in life. When my husband buys fish, I will be happy—my inner condition fosters a genuine sense of fulfillment. People like me sometimes imagine that constant happiness will be a kind of euphoria or endless succession of pleasant experiences involving eating fish. The older I get, the more I feel that the definition utilized in social media is more like a recipe for exhaustion than happiness. Even the most pleasurable things can become passe if you do them every hour of every day. Some think of happiness as a way of being that gives you the resources to deal with the ups and downs of life, that pervades all the emotional states, including sadness. We think of sadness as incompatible with pleasure, but without the contrast of sadness, there can be no understanding of happiness. According to Aristotle, happiness consists in achieving, through the course of a whole lifetime, all the goods—health, wealth, knowledge, friends—that lead to the perfection of human nature and to the enrichment of human life. This requires us to make choices, some of which may be very difficult. Altruism, inner strength and freedom, a sense of direction and meaning in life—those are not sad things. But if you do not fall in despair, it is important that you maintain that wholeness and that sense of purpose and meaning. Although popular, flexi leashes can cause burns, cuts and entanglement and even strangulations for humans and dogs. A pet parents’ good intention is to give their dog room to roam on a long lead. When walking your dog it’s important to have control of the dog and any situation that may arise. A four- to six-foot leash will give you that control. You and your dog can feel each other’s presence, and, as a result, communicate with each other effectively. Dogs sense our emotions traveling through the leash and we can read our dog’s body language. If his body gets stiff and even freezes, he is on alert and you need to be on the alert as well. A relaxed body and wagging tail mean a fun walk.
ISTOCK.COM/ROHAPPY
Pet Parent Question: I have used a flexi lead for years. Both my dog and I are used to this lead. Why should we change if we are careful? Answer: You certainly don’t have to change if you don’t want to. My concern is always the increased opportunity for physical harm to the dog and the pet parent. I am also concerned about the quality of the walk experience for the dog and the pet parent. Being attentive and tuned in to your dog is always helpful, but especially on a walk. When you and your dog walk as a team in close proximity (on a four- to six-foot leash), enjoying each other’s company results in a positive walk experience. That also requires you to avoid distractions (like a phone) so you can focus on your dog. Happy walking! Donna Chicone is an award-winning author, TEDx speaker and advocate for dogs. MEN IN NEED OF A NEW ‘DO have a new place to check out: House of Handsome. Open since August 2020, the barbershop was a product of a longtime dream turned reality over the 76-day quarantine for local hair stylists, Brittany Block, Kelly Kritzeck and Bethany Mitchell. camaraderie that comes with being in a barber shop, led the trio to create House of Handsome. “I love the tradition of it,” Block says. “The barbershop is where a lot of men develop memories growing up and it is a place for getting advice.” All three are trained cosmetologists, so they are wellversed when it comes to all thing’s beauty. It's true... owners have backgrounds in everything from avant-garde editorial hairstyles, perming and straightening to makeup and nails, all three stylists eventually found themselves working together at a local men’s barbershop. Despite their extensive backgrounds, Block explains that the average person doesn’t associate those same skill sets to men’s styles. “People think that men’s cutting is easier but if I make a mistake in a clipper cut, you’re going to see it and I have such a limited space to hid it,” she says. Though they specialize in male cuts, House of Handsome also provides services to females who are looking for shorter pixie styles as well. Wanting to create a space that was uniquely them while also appealing to their clients, they opted for a sophisticated masculine feel rather than the classic “sporty” shop. For regular client Landon Haley it was this elevated atmosphere that drew him in. As a six-year long client for Block, and who gets his haircut every three–four weeks, he says that he keeps returning to House of Handsome for their flexibility and reliability. “She makes the experience enjoyable and she has a lot of passion behind her work and she kind of exuberates it,” he says. “It is intoxicating to have someone enjoy and love what she does and does a good job while doing it.” As for the future of House of Handsome, the owners hope to continue the growth of the business while also supporting the community. Though the business has strong relationships with the local high school sports teams, the owners also have a goal of partnering with local nonprofits to provide haircuts for individuals in need or those preparing for major life transitions, such as back-to-school, job interviews or the first day of work. “It is so fun to watch people walk out and check themselves out in the mirror one more time,” Block says. “You can just tell that they feel good and it feels amazing to be able to do that for people.”

A Slice of Home Two Twin Cities moms connect other Minnesotans to their local communities.
A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE AN IDEA FOR A PODCAST that they’re sure will be a hit, but few actually sit down to record an episode. Hannah Trevizo, who grew up in the Woodbury area, and her friend Nicole Zeltinger had the concept for a podcast that highlights what their fellow Minnesotans were up to. It quickly became clear that was about to be the easiest part of the podcast crafting process for a while. “The learning curve was very steep,” Trevizo says. “We had the idea, like, ‘Look at all the amazing work happening in Minnesota, we should showcase
18

it!’” Fueled by a natural curiosity, the duo focused their attention on what went into producing a podcast. From researching the steps of production and editing to acquiring the equipment, the pair spent three months between coming up with the concept and releasing their first episode of MomsDish MN in August of 2019. The podcast, which is in the works of being rebranded to the Minnesota Circle, features small businesses and events while taking listeners around the great state of Minnesota. As for actually creating the podcast,
Trevizo says, "You can learn basically anything on the internet, so we did a ton of research and we just learned as we went. One of the first episodes we had to edit took hours. It was a difficult process but it’s much simpler now. The editing takes maybe 30 minutes to an hour.” For Trevizo, a daycare provider, and Zeltinger, a teacher, the process of creating an episode has gotten easier with experience, but between their day jobs and raising their families, it can still be tricky to carve out time for the podcast. “[The podcast] definitely could be a full-time job,” Zeltinger says. “There are

so many moving pieces. I know Hannah would love to work on this full time, because there’s just so much you could do with it if you really did have time.” But even under time restraints, the two have expanded their podcast brand to include a website that hosts “Sunday Stories,” where listeners can send in their stories, a family-friendly events calendar that compiles activities going on across the state and a musician feature spotlighting Minnesota musicians. “Mostly we are looking for inspiring stories or interesting stories,” Trevizo says. Zeltinger agrees, adding, “I think one of the most rewarding things about this experience is talking to people who are different from you. All of a sudden you have them on a Google Meet or Skype and you’re getting this inside picture and learning so much about them. That’s been really amazing.” From Duluth, Minn. musician Lanue to Flora Ekpe-Idang, founder of multicultural doll and book company Corage Dolls, Moms Dish MN features a variety of inspiring stories. The podcast also highlights local events, such as Black Fashion Week, and virtual events hosted by the duo themselves. And for new perspectives, Moms Dish MN regularly hosts "Instagram Take Overs," where prominent community members showcase their business, lifestyle and more. Claim to Flame Woodbury Native stirs up wicked scents.
AFTER WORKING A FULL DAY OF HIS CORPORATE JOB, Andersen Gale begins to whip up scent after scent—Lilac Breeze, Loon Island, Cabin Rain, Boundary Waters Campfire. His parents Dan and Beth Gale, fiancé Allie Angellotti and her parents, smell candle after candle—all to bring his company, Sota Scents, to life. Gale, a Woodbury High School 2011 graduate, never thought he would start his own business as an entrepreneur. After graduating from Minnesota State Mankato with a business degree, Gale was invited to an integrated business experience, where he helped to start up and run a company, which is when he discovered his passion. “I had to secure loans with my team … I was responsible for marketing, buying, designing and selling the product. And once you sold the product, all profits were donated to charities of our companies’ choice,” Gale says, noting that, at the time, his company gave back

$2,500. “I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I never knew it until then.” After the experience, Gale went on to work at Campbell Soup Company for two years before happening upon candle making. “Out of nowhere, my roommates and my now-fiancé Allie decided it would be interesting to make candles,” Gale says. Though the first candles turned out “terrible,” according to Gale, he stuck with the DIY project and eventually began to hand out candles as gifts. “People said I should start to sell them,” he says. And so, he did. Sota Scents officially launched in 2018, and nearly three years later, the brand is constantly selling out. Sota Scent candles are made with 100 percent allnatural soy wax, which leaves a cleaner burn and doesn’t give off harmful toxins like paraffin wax. The candles are also created with balsam wood wicks, “which crackles

and creates a little campfire,” Gale says. Though the good-for-you ingredients draw in customers, Gale says it’s really the family-friendly touch that completes the company. Though Gale is Sota Scent’s sole owner, he says the company wouldn’t be what it is today without his team built of family and friends—Britain and Brandon, both childhood friends and Woodbury natives, Gale’s friend Blake and his brother, Connor. “Family is a huge part of the company,” Gale says. Another major piece to the Sota Scents brand is their goal to give back. On the Sota Scents website (sotascents.com), customers can nominate someone in need of direct assistance and once a year the company donates a sum of their profits to a person/organization in need. “It started two years ago with our teammate Britain, who’s dad suffered a stroke and the medical bills were piling up,” Gale says. “They also found out he had a hole in his heart and had to have surgery … We sold out immediately and had a huge pouring in from the community. We restocked but sold out again.” In April 2020, the team donated 100 percent of profits to COVID relief, selling out of products within three hours and raising over $5,000 for local hospitals to supply their teams with face coverings and masks. “This is what we do,” Gale says. “Giving back is a huge part of our company … It really does help relieve burdens.” “We’ve gotten a lot of praise because we are staying true to Minnesota and keeping the business local,” Gale says. “Our goal is to bring people back to their favorite Minnesota memories through our scents.” Shop Sota Scents at local Minnesota retailers, including Hy-Vee Savage, Grace & Co., Minnesota Makers, Eye Candy Refined, Plain & Fancy, Ultima Bellezza Salon and Giggle Gals Boutique.

Sweet Peas Floral offers pre-built basket assortments for a readyto-go Mother's Day gift.
FlowerFilled Gifts Leave a floral gift on your friend’s doorstep this May. BY MEGHAN BISHOP PHOTOS BY CHRIS EMEOTT
MAY DAY—the first of May—originates from European tradition during the Medieval era, celebrating the midway mark of the year and the flora that come with the following seasons; people sent out a floral basket as a sign of enduement. “People typically do it for sending love and well wishes, so a lot of times people will want to do more than one,” says Tara Carlson, owner of Sweet Peas Floral in Woodbury. “[But] they don’t want to spend a lot of money on them.” Gifting a loved one a May Day basket has always meant more than the price tag, Carlson acknowledges, because it is handmade, and people love to receive those heartfelt gifts. After crafting a flower-filled basket, it's also a good call to pen a handwritten note, whether for May Day or Mother's Day— a holiday celebrated in the U.S. since the early 20th century. The day originates from the European holiday, “Mothering Sunday”—a religious holiday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when Christians hosted a special service for children to present their mothers with tokens of appreciation. Now, the day is known for treating mom with something special. Since Sweet Peas Floral is fully “momrun,” Carlson’s shop is never open on Mother's Day. So, typically, the shop sees their most traffic the Saturday before. “Usually, I don’t do much [on Mother’s Day],” says Carlson. “It’s a busy holiday for us, much busier than Valentine’s Day.” In 2020, Sweet Peas Floral COVIDfriendly “Mother’s Day Saturday” was their most sold out in years, with sales rising by

20 percent. She set up tables outside the shop for customers to pick up their orders alongside some of their retail products. And, if a customer wanted to purchase an item, they would wave to Carlson who was stationed inside the shop. Though Carlson says beautiful flowers will always be the best seller, pampering self-care items are the shop’s second best around this season. Carlson’s favorite is their curated “Treat Yourself” assortment, which comes with goodies including bath bombs, candles, a plant, a scarf and decadent chocolates. All the curated baskets look different and can be assorted to capture any type of mom. "It’s all pre-done so the dads and the kids don’t really have to think about it,” Carlson says. “It’s like, ‘Oh look! Everything’s there.’” Before kids, Carlson’s ideal Mother’s Day was brunch with her Mom before some quiet self-care. Now, she usually takes on a morning of excited kids ready to give her a show of affection with a side of burnt pancakes. “I always give the kids something to get them outside [and] off their iPad,” Carlson says. Two years ago, she ended up buying her kids a trampoline. “I bought them a trampoline and ended up spending Mother’s Day putting it together by myself.” She has since chosen to opt for less laborintensive Mother’s Day activities. This year, Carlson hopes to again find a COVID-safe activity for the whole family, while also enjoying the Spring weather with her own family. “It’s springtime ... People want to be outside and they’ve been cooped up,” Carlson says. So grab the kids, make a fun May Day basket and spread the love with a few flower-filled gifts.

Fashion, you may say, has taken a back seat for many of us this past year. We’ve donned our favorite sweatpants or leggings and that well-worn top on a very regular basis—probably too regularly. And if a Zoom work meeting was on our books, well, we may have grumbled a bit as we pulled on that “dressy” sweater. Yes, the lived-in look has definitely been the name of the game. But now it’s time to put some style back in your day; maybe even slip on a pair of pants with, wait for it, a zipper. Coordinate an outfit. Try a new style of jeans. Add a little color. So, in an effort to help amp up your style game, we chatted with fashion guru Wesley Uthus, owner of Primp, and asked her to share spring trends she’s excited about and stocking in her stores.
Black and ivory printed crop top: $36.50; Black and ivory printed shorts: $48
FUNCTIONAL FOOTWEAR Known for their sturdy, grunge aesthetic, lug-sole combat boots are also very chic and trendy—and they’ve been updated, with new colors and new details, to meet today’s fashion styles. “People are really investing in their footwear right now,” says Uthus. “And combat boots are both comfortable and can be worn with many things.”

FORM AND FUNCTION In a myriad of styles, from casual to elegant, bodysuits are endlessly versatile—you can dress them up or keep them casual. And you never have to worry about tucking in your shirt. “I really love a great bodysuit paired with a high-waisted bottom,” says Uthus. “It’s a very flattering look.”

CROP IT UP They’re baaacckk. Cropped tops are a huge part of this year’s spring trends, from cropped sweaters to cropped button downs to cropped T-shirts and more, these shorter-than-average tops are a must-have. “Pairing these tops with highwaisted bottoms can be worn by most everyone,” says Uthus. If you’re still a bit hesitant, try a cropped jean jacket to still enjoy the trend but keep covered up.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS We’re not telling you to give up your beloved skinny jeans; just maybe broaden your horizons and try a little something new. “Raw edge jeans is my favorite denim trend right now,” says Uthus. “It’s different than the skinny jeans, which are still popular, but I really just love the straight leg crop, it’s a little more of a classic style, with raw edges. Almost all of the denim we have in the shops right now have that raw edge.”

Springtime is often synonymous with those light, cheerful colors, such as luscious lavenders, buttercup yellows, peony pinks and sumptuous sages, and they are a perfect palette on which to build a fashion trend. “Pastel pieces are the perfect way to add a touch of spring to any outfit,” says Uthus.
Whether they be leggings, paper bagstyle, tailored trousers or wide-leg jeans, in flowy fabrics or in the perfect denim, high-waisted bottoms are the quintessential spring staple.

The serenading song of birds and the translucent green glow of freshly unfurled leaves signal the arrival of spring in Minnesota. If you’re lucky, you can add the thunder of waterfalls, too. As winter loosens its grip, snowmelt fills the state’s rivers that roar toward Lake Superior, rumble through hardwoods and cascade across prairie.

You have to go north—all the way to the Canadian border—to see Minnesota’s highest waterfall as it plummets 120 feet down the Pigeon River at Grand Portage State Park. North West Company fur traders used the river in the late 1700s-early 1800s, and it’s quickly apparent why they carried their large canoes around this daunting waterfall, which can double in size during the spring. Visit the nearby Grand Portage National Monument if you want to know more about Minnesota’s early fur trade. Follow Lake Superior’s shoreline about 30 miles southwest to see Minnesota’s most unusual waterfalls: Devil’s Kettle on the Brule River. Visitors can park or camp at Judge C.R. Magney State Park north of Grand Marais and hike to the waterfalls where the water splits. One side tumbles 50 feet into a pool that flows to Lake Superior, and the other plunges underground and disappears. Where that water went was a mystery to onlookers and

geologists alike, until 2017 when DNR scientists were able to confirm that the water resurfaces somewhere downstream. On a 60-mile stretch of the North Shore Scenic Drive between Lutsen and Two Harbors, you can find gentle falls at Cascade River State Park, marvel at dramatic gorges and massive potholes carved out at Temperance River State Park, admire Cross River Falls right on the highway at Schroeder, hike back to High Falls at Tettegouche State Park or explore the multiple falls of Gooseberry Falls State Park. Elsewhere in the region, the Kettle River in Sandstone—a hot spot for whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and ice climbing in winter—is home to Big Spring Falls, and Wolf Creek Falls within Banning State Park. Hidden waterfalls can be found in Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, both of which border Canada and can only be accessed by water.

Waterfall at Pipestone National Monument
About 140 miles southeast of the Twin Cities, almost to the Iowa border, you can find an unusual twist on the typical waterfall on the outskirts of Harmony. The catch? You have to head underground on a Niagara Cave tour to see the almost 60-foot-high waterfall. It’s one of the unique features of this cave that was once popular for underground weddings and still boasts a small chapel among its natural features. Southern Minnesota’s largest waterfall can be found at Minneopa State Park. Its gentle creek burbles through the hardwood forest until it falls like a curtain across two terraces in a mossy gorge west of Mankato. On the other side of

the Minnesota River, about 8 miles away, Minnemishinona Falls cascades into a narrow ravine along the scenic Judson Bottom Road. If you continue along the Minnesota River Valley heading west, take a quick side trip to see the namesake of Redwood Falls. It’s tucked into 219-acre Alexander Ramsey Park, the state’s largest municipal park and a popular spot for camping, hiking and visiting a small zoo with buffalo, deer, prairie dogs and waterfowl. An unexpected waterfall also can be found in far southwest Minnesota, known more for prairie and farms than waterways. That makes the pretty waterfall at Pipestone National Monument a surprise when walking
among pink quartzite rocks and learning about the area’s continued spiritual significance to American Indians.
TWIN CITIES In Minneapolis, the falls at Minnehaha Park cascade 50 feet as the creek rushes toward the Mississippi River. The falls anchor this popular park, where you can hike, rent a bike, catch a concert or kick back on the patio at the seasonal Sea Salt Eatery. The smaller, more secluded Hidden Falls are tucked away in a pretty riverside park in St. Paul. While some of these sites are free, most require a day pass. State Park daily entrance fees are $7, or $35 for an annual pass.

• “Most people in the United States only wear about 20 percent of their wardrobes. That means that 80 percent of the clothes are languishing in their closet being unworn,” Nancy Dilts, a personal wardrobe stylist, says. “That’s an enormous amount of waste.” Dilts specializes in helping people become more sustainable in their shopping habits. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in 2018, there was 11.3 million tons of textiles sent to landfill from the U.S. alone. Not only are perfectly good clothes gathering dust in closets, but we’re also filling miles of landfills with materials that, in many cases, could have gotten more use. Though fashion waste and massproduced clothing sold at a lesser cost, known as “fast fashion,” is a worldwide issue, consumers and companies are beginning to learn how to create eco-friendlier practices. STARTING WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
“The piece that’s most important is that people are actually wearing what they own,” Dilts says. When working with a new client, she often begins with a closet consultation, a great starting place for creating a more sustainable wardrobe. She suggests creating a foundation for a great closet from the quality pieces

that people already have. “[People] will ultimately be buying less by making the clothes they already own work better for them,” she says. Once a shopper makes use of what is already in their wardrobe, Dilts suggests that people “purge, donate what can be donated and consign what can be consigned.” Instead of hanging onto items that are outdated or do not fit correctly, give those pieces a second life. Consider collaborating with local consignment stores, selling online or donating to thrift shops rather than throwing garments away. SHOPPING SECOND-HAND
With a pared down closet, Dilts gives a bit of advice as clients head back into the shopping world: start second-hand. “Second-hand shopping is what I’m an advocate of because you’re keeping quality pieces in the use stream,” says Dilts. Not only does shopping at thrift and consignment stores extend the life of clothing pieces, Dilts says it can also be better for wallets in the long run. “You can afford to invest in those higher-quality pieces that you may not be able to afford in traditional retail. And they last longer than if you buy fast fashion or a lower-quality piece brand new,” she says. Shopping at thrift stores is a hunt, but it’s also a great way to find
hidden treasures. While it can be a challenge, Dilts has some tips for making the experience successful: Be patient, be persistent and know your style. “You’re looking for the diamonds in the rough [while thrifting],” Dilts says. “Don’t settle for a great deal. Even if it is a great deal, if it isn’t right, if it doesn’t fit you well, if it’s damaged, don’t settle. If it’s not right for you, you have to learn to let it go.” Dilts most often visits consignment stores when shopping with clients because they offer a more curated selection, so it can be easier to find styles that are high quality and fashionable. At many consignment stores, shoppers can snag gently worn name-brands at a more convenient price. Many also appreciate the high level of sustainability that a consignment shop provides. “Consignment is a closed loop,” Dilts says. “The consignor is a local person, the shop owner is a local retailer, the person buying it is local and [clothing is] being reused.” While thrift stores often see mass donations and end up sending textiles to landfill, consignment shops “extend the life of a garment in a more reliable way,” Dilts says. Here are a few of Dilts’ go-to consignment shops in the Twin Cities: • Elite Repeat carries both new

CAPSULE-IZE YOUR WARDROBE A capsule wardrobe is one way that people look to solve the problem of unused clothing. It restructures one’s closet to minimize the amount of clothes owned and maximize the frequency of using each piece. It involves having a set number of items in your closet and knowing how to style them in various ways so you will wear the pieces more often. Many who are interested in capsule wardrobes will use a stylist or follow a guide, like Courtney Carver’s Project 333, which suggests 33 items for every threemonth season. While capsule wardrobes aren’t always practical for everyone, they can be used as a way to ease styling for certain occasions. “Oftentimes, it’s for a specific something, so it’s creating a capsule wardrobe for traveling or a work capsule wardrobe, so it makes daily dressing easier,” Dilts says. “Some people are really wanting to embrace minimalism, so it’s helping them to figure out what pieces they already own work really well and then building out from there.”

“If we don’t have success [at consignment stores], I really encourage people to shop ethically as best they can if they do buy new,” Dilts says. Shopping ethically often means understanding where garments come from, how they are made and how long they will last. Look for companies that utilize recycled materials, focus on timeless styles or have a dedication to responsible factory and employment practices. And opting out of fast fashion for an eco-friendlier wardrobe doesn’t
have to mean sacrificing style or sticking to just the basics. Though it can be tempting to grab the newest trends from the closest chain store, there are other ways to show personal style without sacrificing sustainability. “Invest in high-quality, enduring, classic pieces,” Dilts says. “For those trends, focus on them being accessories and things that are more interchangeable.” She also recommends looking for trends that will stay relevant for longer. “If you’re not going to wear it 30 times, don’t buy it.” If you can’t find the pieces you’re looking for at thrift or second-hand stores, consider opting for local boutiques and designers that value sustainability and ethical practices to add a bit of personality to your wardrobe. The Twin Cities is home to many fashion-forward boutiques that support ethical designers. Here are a few of Dilts’ favorites: • Spoils of Wear is a family owned, sustainable boutique in St. Paul that focuses on fair trade, zero waste and pieces made in the U.S. They carry women’s and men’s clothing, accessories and gifts. 1566 Selby Ave., St. Paul; 651.414.9698; spoilsofwear.com • Niche carries women’s styles from many Minnesota-based female artists. Woodbury residents are about to get the fresh feel of spring cleaning when digging out their gently used items for this year’s 44th annual city-wide Lions Garage Sale on the weekend of May 13. “People store up their stuff for a year and their house is bursting at the seams, and it’s time to do that spring clean out,” says Mathias Baden, Woodbury Lions president. There is a $35 fee for sellers to register with Lions for the garage sale, which includes a house listing on the official garage sale print and e-directories and a Lions Garage Sale sign for the front yard. All proceeds go to Woodbury Lions Club causes, with their five focus areas begin hunger relief, vision and eye care, childhood cancer, diabetes and the environment. Due to COVID-19, the Woodbury Lions had to move the 2020 annual sale to the fall, which corralled over 300 resident sellers. Their usual fall sales would never have hit those numbers since people prefer to participate in the spring. Baden believes the numbers were due to COVID. “People wanted to get out. There was a little bit of cabin fever there … [This is] one of the mostly outdoor-friendly activities you could do,” says Baden. garagesale@woodburylions.org; woodburylions.org
The annual Woodbury Prayer Breakfast is an event for leaders from business, government, education and churches to gather and seek divine guidance and renew faith. Colorful Culture CELEBRATE MEXICAN HERITAGE WITH THESE CINCO DE MAYO DISHES. BY HAILEY ALMSTED
PHOTOS BY CHRIS EMEOTT
An array of dishes from Acapulco Restaurante Mexicano, including guacamole dip and cheese sauce; tostada stacker and nachos compuestos.
Cinco de Mayo, for many, is known as the day to grab your friends and family and head to your favorite Mexican restaurant, where you’ll order tacos, nachos, burritos galore—all to commemorate the heritage and culture of Mexico. The rich history of Cinco de Mayo—May 5—is often confused with Mexico’s Independence Day, though the two days are unrelated. The fifth of May, also known as Battle of Puebla Day, celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France during the Battle of Puebla. Though it is a minor holiday in Mexico, it’s a time for Mexican-Americans to celebrate their colorful heritage. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, grab your favorite Mexican dishes to go, head to one of many parks around Woodbury and celebrate this lively holiday the socially distanced way with your friends.

PAINTING ACAPULCO RESTAURANTE MEXICANO Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Acapulco Restaurante Mexicano has been a Twin Cities staple for a real taste of Mexican food. Owners Maria and Jesus Leon, transplants from Jalisco, Mexico, first opened Acapulco in Coon Rapids in 1996, and continue to run the family-owned restaurant with their nine niños: Maria, Jose, Carlos, Alex, Sam, Veronica, Martin, Jesse and Lupita. The Leon family is responsible for the delicious variety on the Acapulco menus— from nachos and quesadillas to ensaladas (salads), especialidades (specialty items), frontera tacos and frontera burritos. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with especiales de comidas familiars, “family meal specials,” including taco and enchilada platters, as well as chips and dips. And it’s not a celebration without the margaritas; grab a margarita kit and choose your flavor (strawberry, raspberry, peach or mango). ¡Provecho!

MACHETE COCINA MEXICANA Named after the restaurant’s nearly two-foot-long machete quesadilla, Woodbury’s family-owned Machete Cocina Mexicana brings modern flare to traditional Mexican fare, creating a unique dining experience. Weighing in at two-pounds, the machetazo is filled with five meats and vegetables, topped with cheese, lettuce, avocado and—you might’ve guessed it—more cheese. It is a popular dish in Mexico City and Machete has been serving the dish since the restaurant opened in 2018. The gigantic dish is perfect for celebrating Cinco de Mayo with friends and family—just don’t forget to order equally-

CILANTRO RESTAURANTE & TAQUERIA Family-owned and operated Cilantro Restaurante & Taqueria has been serving up authentic Mexican dishes since its opening in 2018. “My wife Ema and I have owned [Cilantro] since 2018,” says owner Ruben Chong. “My wife and I were born and raised in Mexico … Her recipes are what you see in our menu.” The lively restaurant, donned with colorful murals of Mexican homes and cultural patterns, features an array of Latino favorites. Expect to find your favorite tacos and burritos, enchiladas and tamales, and more across the menu. Or stick to the tried-and-trues—the burrito San Jose (grilled chicken, chorizo, rice and beans), enchiladas tres Marias (one beef, chicken and cheese enchilada), the carnitas (pork) or the carne asada (sliced beef ) platters. Cinco de Mayo specials? ¡Sí, señor! “We’ll have a carnitas family package, asada package and more family package deals that can be ordered online from our website,” Chong says. “[And] for Cinco de Mayo, we plan to have taco salads, tamale platter and house margarita specials.”

TASTE O F TE QUI LA Originally published in the November 2019 issue of Maple Grove Magazine; written by Hailey Almsted. Looking for another way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Commemorate the day with a tequila taste test! We talked with John Farrell III, Haskell’s vice president of sales, about tequila—asking him for tips and tricks for hosting a tequila tasting that’s more than just shots and margaritas. The Basics For starters, there are three common types of tequila: blanco (also known as white or silver), reposado and anejo. “Blanco is young, fresh tequila; reposado, which is aged for no more than 12 months; and anejo is the same liquid but aged longer [for at least two years],” Farrell says. For a tequila tasting, he recommends serving these three types, more commonly known as a vertical flight—a flight with each type of tequila. The Recommendations Farrell says to keep it simple when you’re hosting a tasting. “If you’re tasting tequila, that’s all you want to do,” he says. It’s important to not overdo it, and be prepared to serve food and other beverages after, including beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. As for which tequila to serve? Farrell recommends Tres Agaves or Casamigos— as they both offer a blanco, reposado and anejo, and are good tequilas on an affordable scale. Milagro is another go-to, but Farrell says to stay away from Jose Cuervo and Patrón. He does say to drink what you like, and if you enjoy those brands, include them. If you’re a little unsure, head to your local liquor store or ask around.

American Attraction Neighborhood bald eagle catches the eye of a local photographer. BY MEGHAN BISHOP
LOS IN G HIS CA MER A’S L EN S C A P in the process, Tom Hawkinson couldn’t dare miss a close up shot of America’s iconic bird, the bald eagle. “I’ve ran that fast for my camera maybe one other time,” says Hawkinson, photographer of Prepare for Takeoff, which received First Place in the Wildlife & Nature category of the Focus on Woodbury photo contest. The photo was shot using a Canon Mirrorless EOS R camera with an attached telephoto 70–200 lens to get that crisp clear detail of the eagle’s wings. Hawkinson had noticed an influx of eagles in his neighborhood and knew he should take the

chance to work his photo magic before they all leave town. He had a clear view of the stationary eagle from his office window, where he snapped over 200 photos in 10 minutes. He patiently observed the eagle and waited to capture some action “There were a lot of the same photos,” Hawkinson says. “I just sat there, hoping it would take off.” Hawkinson has been a photo hobbyist for over 20 years. His photography repertoire spans from senior photos, weddings, family portraits and his classic nature shots.
