he smell of roasted marshmallows; the sound of a nearby creek, lake or river; the night sky lit up by the endless number of stars. I recall the memories of camping as kids like it happened just yesterday. My grandfather, sister and I would drive up Minnesota’s north shore, past Duluth, Minn., and into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). We would set up camp, string up the food and cook dinner around the campfire. Although I have not been to the BWCA since I was young, I still enjoy the serenity of camping from time-to-time. (Though, now I much prefer a cabin with four walls and running water!) But, if I could have it my way, I would turn a camping trip into a glamping trip. This month, I interviewed Kenny Young about his Twin Cities glamping business, Pitched Mpls. Through the business, Young brings glamping—the unique fusion of glam and nature—right to your backyard. On these unique adventures, he says, “I’m creating something that isn’t just a product, it’s an experience for kids and families.” To read the full feature, flip to page 34. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN Teaching kids to cook can be an enjoyable, educational and tasty way to spend time together. BY RACHAEL PERRON

and slow with safe, confidence-boosting challenges before progressing to more complicated or hazardous undertakings. You know your child best; use your comfort level and their confidence and ability levels as guides. Here are some suggested kitchen tasks by age group for your up-and-coming chef. Preschoolers are especially curious about food. Tap into their interest and developing motor skills by giving them jobs that promote both. Tiny fingers make little ones particularly adept at pulling leaves off herb stems! As they grow, these youngsters can move on to mixing, stirring and pouring pre-measured ingredients. Focus on short, simple tasks—nothing hot, heavy or sharp for these kiddos. Grade schoolers are great culinary students because they can read! Have them practice reading recipes, ingredient lists and nutrition facts panels. As their math skills improve, teach them to use kitchen thermometers and dry and liquid measuring glasses, cups and spoons. Help

them use small appliances like toasters, and introduce them to small paring knives. Rolling and cutting cookies, scooping cupcakes and skewering kabobs are great techniques to learn at this age. Preteens aren’t satisfied with simple tasks—they want real responsibility! Help them make pancakes, eggs and grilled cheese on the stovetop and bake cookies or brownies in the oven. With supervision, they can also begin to use bigger knives and other cutting tools, like pizza wheels, vegetable peelers, box graters and can openers. Older teens and new drivers love grocery shopping, or at least driving to the store! This is a great way to introduce them to value concepts and food costs. Give them some money to buy things they choose themselves; it’s a great way to encourage budgeting. And have them help with meal planning and cooking full meals. Playing with Your Dog It may sound odd to say we need to learn how to play with our dog. If you adopted your dog as a puppy, you may have developed play times together. If you have adopted a shelter or rescue dog, you may have a dog who has not seen toys or chews before. Playing with our dog is actually part of developing the bond between dog and pet parent. Providing your dog with safe non-toxic toys and making time just for play together is a great start. But dogs need physical and mental stimulation. There are dog puzzles that provide fun mental stimulation for dogs and basic obedience training can be disguised as play very easily. Overall, there are so many mutual benefits to play. Pet Parent Question: My friend told me about the puzzles she has for her dog. When we showed my dog the puzzle, he did not seem to like them. Why would that be?

Answer: Just like we teach our dogs to play fetch and how to play with other toys, we also need to teach them how to work a puzzle. A puzzle usually involves a hidden treat, and the dog needs to figure out how to get the treat. Introducing your dog to the concept by showing him where to find the treat then letting your dog figure it out is usually all it takes. Make sure the puzzle fits the age and size of your dog. Remember, it is never good to tease a dog by pretending to give them a treat and not follow through. It is always about building trust with your dog, Teaching them to play is one way to promote trust and quality bonding time together. Author Claire Lombardo chronicles the lives of the Sorenson family that balances past and present with deftly drawn flashbacks. In the ‘70s, Marilyn and David fall in love and begin their family. In 2016, their four daughters are grown, but no one’s life has turned out quite how they imagined. Well-placed details and characterizations make the reader feel like a fly on the wall, a witness to the beautiful brokenness of family. Do not be daunted by the length of Lombardo’s novel; it is worth every moment you spend with the Sorenson family. The HBO adaptation, by Amy Adams and Laura Dern, will be just as enticing.

A Lot Happening Underneath the Skin The COVID-19 virus activated our stress responses and sent our nervous system into overdrive, then we had to carry all the other events that followed. The pandemic and social isolation has disrupted our mind-body connection. You might be in a state of freeze—we’re just over a year after the pandemic began, but our nervous system has been assaulted and our thinking brain has not quite told us that the threat has been absolved. Job losses, business closings, school lockdowns, virtual classrooms, Zoom meetings. No amount of sophisticated technology, as smart, as creative and as innovative as we are in terms of technology, has shown, for most of us, any sense of “connection” during this pandemic. It was insufficient and shows that, as much as technology advances, it does not take away the human condition

and search for meaning. Our systems know love and belonging— the thing that was taken away from the pandemic. Our systems know closeness, as in a simple hug, and not being able to do these things when people are hurting is grief and loss. Viktor Frankl has been alleged to have said, about freedom, that, “Between stimulus and our response, there is a space. And in that space lies our power to choose. And in our choice lies our growth and our freedom.” It is a beautiful encapsulation of self-awareness and that pause or balance state. I think some of the “self-care” solutions that are out there can sound quite trivial. But every so often, with curiosity, compassion (for self and others), awareness, smelling the wind, taking a deep breath of summer air and acknowledging

the blessings of life, I catch myself making a very intentional choice to turn inwards. Closer toward my values, closer toward what is really meaningful to me. While realizing that, four times out of five times, I will most likely forget all of this when times get tense. Our bodies are doing their best to take care of us, and we probably have more power than we realize. Tap into those selfactualizing powers and help yourself by being compassionate to oneself and others.

Place one of the bread slices, buttered side down, on a nonstick skillet or griddle, preheated to medium. Divide shredded cheese, then sliced cheese evenly on top; put remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side up. Purposeful Paws Two Woodbury locals open a new doggie daycare with a cause.

ALISSA BERT AND CINDY LANG came from two disparate professional backgrounds, but their shared entrepreneurial spirit and love for pups have led them to open Dogtopia, a doggie daycare and boarding service, in Maplewood. Bert, who previously worked in early childhood special education, approached Lang with the idea of opening a local branch of the Dogtopia franchise in the Twin Cities area. “I was a senior IT director at Travelers Insurance,” Lang says. “And although I’d had really great experi-

ences there, after a long time in corporate America I was ready for a change.” When she was young, Lang’s father had started his own business. Since then, Lang says that she has been inspired to start her own business too one day. “Alissa and her husband presented me and my husband with this franchise, and we took it from there,” Lang says. The Woodbury residents opened their Maplewood Dogtopia location in December 2020, despite the COVID pandemic. “We’ve definitely made the best of

it,” Bert says. “We have a lot of fun COVID puppies whose pet parents are in the same situation that we’re in; they’re at home doing distance learning, their husbands are at home working and then they have this puppy that’s been eating everything.” Lang agrees that opening during COVID-19 has had its ups and downs. “We have some people who say, ‘Maybe not daycare because I’m not going to the office,’ and then people who are saying, ‘Oh my gosh I really need daycare because I’m not going to the office,’” Lang

says. “And I think so many people did get puppies and are realizing the benefits of the socialization and dogs being with other dogs.” At Dogtopia, pups spend up to 10 hours a day in open play with other pooches, monitored by trained canine coaches. “We definitely work on a lot of behaviors within the playroom and open play,” Lang says. “So pet parents do see progress and an improvement in behaviors.” Pet parents can also watch this playtime in real time, thanks to the webcams installed throughout the Dogtopia play area. “Pet parents absolutely love it,” Lang says. “I would say every morning or evening pet parents will say, ‘Oh I saw my dog doing this and it was so funny.’ It’s fun to see your dog enjoying themselves and having fun with other dogs.” Another element that is unique to Dogtopia is the franchise’s affiliation with the Dogtopia Foundation’s Fetch it Forward program. There are three primary areas that the Dogtopia Foundation supports under this program: youth literacy, employment initiatives for individuals with autism and sponsoring service dogs for veterans. “Having a service dog can really change veterans’ lives,” Lang explains. “But it does cost a lot of money to train a service dog. So what we’re doing right now is raising money.” Bert and Lang have gotten creative with their fundraising efforts with programs like Makin’ Bacon, a monthly bacon bake with proceeds going to the foundation. “We’re always trying to do fun things that benefit the dog but then also benefit our foundation,” Bert says. “We’re hoping that in our first year we can raise enough money to sponsor a service dog for a vet.”

CABIN OWNERS KNOW THE DRILL. Head up (or over) to the lake in springtime for opening, plant the garden beds and flower boxes, return home and hope for the best. Either at the next visit or any other time during the summer, arrive to find death-by-thirst plants or a flora crime scene, thanks to the local rabbits and/or deer populations. Alan Branhagen, director of operations for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, offers ways to increase the odds of having healthy plant life for your cabin life. Here’s the down and (garden) dirty of it all: Deer/rabbit-friendly elements: Consider spiny succulents (agave, aloe, crown-of-thorn, echeveria and sedum), herbs (basil, borage, cilantro, dill, lavender, parsley, rosemary and sage) and typical annuals (marigold, petunia, salvia and verbena). Perennials: Think herbs (thyme, hardy oregano, mint in containers and hyssop) and wildflowers (anise-hyssop, coreopsis, baptisia/wild indigo, aromatic aster and showy goldenrod). Ferns (maidenhair, Christmas and wood-fern) are left alone. Traditional perennials (alliums/ornamental onions, bleeding heart, catmint, daffodils, meadow sage, iris and beloved peonies) are options, too. Shrubs: Most evergreens are favorite browse in winter, and the only exception is false cypress, which is not hardy in northern Minnesota’s zone 3. Northern bush-honeysuckle, potentilla, snowberry and coralberry are among the few shrubs deer leave alone. Drought tolerant and no deadheading: Try succulents and most herbs (listed above). Marigolds seem to re-bloom, regardless of deadheading. Petunias (select Wave series) don’t require deadheading and geraniums are drought tolerant. Don’t forget colorful foliage plants (coleus, dusty miller, helichrysum and silver falls vine) and Swedish ivy. The pendant blue succulent burro’s tail is making a comeback in popularity, too.

Best time to plant: It is best to plant trees, shrubs and perennials in the fall, so they require less watering, as they are going into dormancy and focusing on root growth. In general, watering protocol for new elements varies based on the plant, soil and weather. The equivalent of an inch of rainfall is what is said for turf, but spring-planted trees and shrubs will need more, especially if they are in sandy soils. Clay soil is better at holding moisture. Lake-friendly fertilizers/weed killers: Follow the directions on the label, and more is not better. Lake-friendly fertilizers are those with no or very little phosphorous—the middle number in their nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK). The NPK rating should be zero or very low. Most of our natural soils do not require added phosphorous, so it simply runs off and creates algal blooms in waterways. Embrace your inner weeds! Target specific weeds, and don’t blanket spray. Follow directions, and read about the impact to pollinators and aquatic life. Protect landscaping at closing: Fallplanted evergreens can benefit from burlap protection against the winter sun and wind. Deer and rabbit excluding fencing, even if temporary, can be critical in the winter. Hardware cloth wrapped around the base of fruit and ornamental crabapple trees can protect from winter voles, which may eat the bark from their runs under the snow.

Created by the Washington County Community Development Agency (CDA) and managed by the Shelter Corporation, this threestory, 42-unit complex was designed for independent individuals that are over 62 years old on a fixed income. Glen is a place that ensures affordability, security and community for each resident. “To have that sense of community is so important to our residents,” Regional Manager of the Shelter Corporation Cindy Kramm says. “We are excited to be able to bring all of those comforts right to their front door.” Just because someone grows older, does not mean they have to give up the sense of community they know and love. “People want to stay in the community that they’re connected to,” executive director

of the Washington County CDA Melissa Taphorn says. “The apartment provides that type of lifestyle for them.” In close proximity to local shopping centers, dining experiences and the Tamarack Nature Preserve, residents are able to stay connected to everyday life. ties, they are also provided with a service coordinator to help with housekeeping, administer in-home health care, such as Medicare enrollment and free blood pressure screenings, and tax preparation. “It is important that our seniors are able to have this housing and have a place to live where they don’t have to worry,” Kramm says. In a growing community such as Woodbury, the options for housing are increasing, but so are the price tags. “It shouldn’t be a matter of how much money you make to determine if you can live in Woodbury,” Kramm says. Striving to help individuals and growing families maintain a stable lifestyle, the CDA worked with the city to develop a plan that would adequately accommodate the housing need for the community. The CDA was able to reduce construction costs and any potential increases in rental rates. “We felt that was our calling to try to get to that deep affordability level,” Taphorn says. In addition to their efforts in affordable housing (the CDA is home to over 1,200 affordable senior and family housing units in the county), the Washington County CDA also provides free access to services such as rental assistance, counseling for first-time home buyers or renters, critical services for the homeless, loan programs and resources to help facilitate small business growth in the area. With a mission of providing longterm affordability, Taphorn says that the Washington County CDA hopes to maintain this goal at The Glen, its partnering complexes and eventually more developments, for years and years to come. “It is a great opportunity, it is a beautiful building, our residents absolutely love it, and we love being able to provide for them,” Kramm says.

Passion for Fashion Woodbury resident and entrepreneur Tracy Brown looks forward to a bright summer season. BY MADELINE KOPIECKI

TRACY BROWN says she has always had a passion for clothing, customer service and retail. Brown, who received her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota's College of Design Retail Merchandising Program, would have loved to jump right into founding her own brand out of college, but the process seemed a little trickier at that point. “It’s much easier these days, with the tools you can use from Shopify and different online templates,” Brown explains.

After working managerial roles at department stores, Brown was looking for a change of pace and a more consistent work schedule. But even though she left the retail industry for a corporate role in insurance, her passion for fashion was never far from her mind. Brown enrolled in the University of Minnesota’s MBA program in 2018, but she didn’t wait for graduation to start making her dreams come true. “Flash forward to when I wanted to find my company. I was in all these business classes, and

I’m like, ‘How come all these people can do it?’ There’re all these people who have started their own companies,” she says. So Brown got to work on her own clothing brand, Lynette Tracy Fashion Boutique. The point initially wasn’t perfection, Brown says, but rather simply getting started and learning through doing. “I founded [Lynette Tracy Fashion Boutique] in 2019,” Brown says. “I just wanted to get started and put things out there. So I decided to just do it.” Lynette Tracy features comfy, casual

LINDAHL FAMILY DENTAL P.A. and cute clothing designed in Los Angeles, Calif. that are personally selected by Brown, but there’s an important mission that distinguishes this online boutique from many of the others on the market. “I’m from northern Minnesota,” Brown explains. “I grew up on a reservation, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and so I wanted to put a spin on it and have some Native American representation.” Brown says that when she was a young girl, she didn’t come across depictions of Native American women as models or businesswomen. With Lynette Tracy’s marketing, Brown uses the opportunity to feature Native American women as models as well as highlight Native American artists by including accessories like intricate beadwork earrings in the styling. The clothing featured on Lynette Tracy’s website enjoys a broad range of appeal, which explains why it found success in over 30 states within a year of launching. Brown says she keeps real women in mind when selecting styles to add to her brand. “I want it to be the young mom who still wants to be comfy and cute, that’s what I’m looking for,” Brown says. “I look for soft fabrics, or I look for clothing that fits your body in a nice way … I try to find anything I think will fit a typical, normal body.” A casual clothing brand was a lucky call for 2020, when COVID-19 saw everybody reverting to comfy classics for a new work-from-home style. “I tested a few trendier pieces,” Brown says. Many new and established businesses were affected by the onset of COVID quarantine measures in March 2020, and Lynette Tracy was no exception. “It was definitely a challenge,” Brown says. “I feel like, back up to March, it was a challenge getting inventory in that I’d previously ordered.” But there was a boom for online retailers during the initial months of quarantine: more time for idyl eyes to peruse social media. “I was able to reach a lot of customers and find a lot of new customers with the jump in online traffic,” Brown says. “And then I just had to make sure I maintained those relationships throughout the summer.” For more information about Lynette Tracy Fashion Boutique—and its future endeavors—go to woodburymag.com.

Why Flying is Too Stressful for Our Family After I married my husband and we had four wonderful kids together, we figured flying would be a bit more complicated but still manageable with a bit of forethought. But when three of our children were diagnosed with ASD, we quickly realized we would have to adapt our vacation plans to be more accessible. Kids with ASD can quickly get overwhelmed in unfamiliar spaces, and I knew the long TSA lines, loud airport noises and cramped airplane seats would make flying an anxiety-ridden nightmare for them and for me. We did try flying with the kids a couple times. But the stress they picked up on the flight meant it took a few days before they began enjoying our vacation, and by then, it was nearly time to get back on the plane and head home. Still, despite all the complications, I was determined my children would see and travel the world, and that we would share the journey joyfully. I was determined to pass my love for travel on to my kids.

We’re also excited to take an overnight at Taylors Falls to walk the trails and check out the St. Croix River, and to drive down to Wabasha to look for eagles soaring over the Mississippi. I’m also excited for the kids to spend some time on the North

Shore, where we’ll stick a toe into Lake Superior while we look for agates. They can’t wait to see Gooseberry Falls and tour Split Rock Lighthouse. My anxiety about these activities is low because I know we can always pop into the RV for a nap, a book, a snack or to just chill if the trip suddenly feels overwhelming.

RV trips have opened the world to my kids and given them a major confidence boost. My heart bursts with pride watching them experience the joys of travel. They get to see the world through new eyes, broaden their horizons and soak up the knowledge other cultures can teach. And I’m right there with them.

Hours of time are spent setting up the tent, blowing up the air mattress and gathering all the pillows and sleeping bags for just one night under the stars. Luckily, one new Twin Cities business, Pitched Mpls., is bringing a glitzy and glamorous camping experience right to your backyard.

Kenny Young, a transplant from southern California, made the trek to Minnesota to attend North Central University, where he met his wife Autumn. In November 2019, Young, deciding to take time away from his corporate career in ballet, was thinking about starting his own business venture allowing him to spend more time with Autumn and their children. “I kept asking myself, ‘What kind of business?’” Young says. “I’m an enneagram eight, so I’m fueled by mission and purpose … I was thinking, ‘How can I get

How can I make quality time easy, accessible and different?’” Drawing from his personal background, as well as his love for nature, Young decided to bring backyard camping to people’s homes, but with a twist. “In the development stage, my wife and I thought, ‘Anyone could have a Coleman tent’ … What if we took it to the next level?” he says. Young officially formulated the glamping experience, Pitched Mpls., on March 7, 2020—just a mere six days before the first COVID shutdown. But that didn’t stop Pitched Mpls. “We deliver the complete glamping experience to backyards,” Young says. Each experience is complete with a weather-proof canvas tent that can withstand rain, snow and even hail; plus, he provides comfort items, such as rugs, chairs and a memory foam bed. There are also add-on items, including an in-tent movie theater— popular for a movie night under the stars, according to Young—or a picnic table with floor pillow seating. Though Young did not rent out any tents until April, he says the business

took off from there. “In April, we rented one tent. May had two tents. June had three tents. July had four tents,” he says. “Every weekend we were booked. I had to create a waitlist.” For Ryan and Kristin Rivard, date night does not come easy. weather. “In theory, you could sleep in these tents when it’s zero degrees outside,” Young says. “But we thought, ‘What if we brought a tent experience inside?’” Young and his team decided to focus on bringing the camping experience to younger kids and developed the Pitched Tiny Tents experience. WHAT IS CYCLING WITHOUT AGE?

Cycling Without Age is a movement started in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help the elders get back on their bicycles, but he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to the local nursing home residents. HOW IT WORKS Volunteers (pilots) sign up for bike rides with the elderly as often or as rarely as they want to. It’s all driven by people’s own motivation. At present (March 2020) more than 2,200 chapter locations around the world offer Cycling Without Age from well over 3,000 trishaws – and the numbers are still growing. More than 33,000 pilots ensure that the elderly get out of their nursing homes, out on the bikes to enjoy the fresh air and the community around them. They give them the right to wind in their hair.

Ingredients:

• Four large eggs • ½ cup whole milk • ½ tsp. salt • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese • 2 Tbsp. salted butter • 1 small finely chopped onion • 4 cups fresh baby spinach • 1 cup halved grape tomatoes Preheat the oven to broil. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper until smooth. Fold in Swiss cheese and halved grape tomatoes; melt butter and add to a nine-inch nonstick pan. Add onions and sauté until softened (about five minutes); add spinach and cook until wilted (about two minutes); pour egg mixture into the pan and cook two to four minutes. Transfer the pan into the oven and broil until golden brown.

• 2 Tbsp. fresh-grated Parmesan • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice and lemon wedges for garnish • Fresh-ground black pepper • Optional: cherry tomatoes for added color and taste Boil a large pot of salted water; fill a large bowl with ice water. Add kale to the boiling water, stir until leaves are slightly wilted (about two minutes). Transfer kale to ice water, continue boiling the water; once cooled, drain the water and dry the kale as much as possible; coarsely chop kale. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook al dente. While cooking the pasta, pulse pistachios, garlic, kale and parsley until finely chopped; while pulsing, add oil in a steady stream; add Parmesan, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Drain the pasta and reserve ½ cup of pasta water. Combine the pesto mix with pasta, along with a few spoonfuls of pasta water. Add salt and pepper to taste; serve with lemon wedges.

JUNETEENTH—celebrated June 19—marks the day slavery was abolished in U.S., yet racial inequality has persisted in the place of segregation. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the vibrance of Black history in American culture. “It gives a reawakening. There is still much work that needs to be done to really be free. There is still a lot of racial injustice out there; systemic racism still plagues our community,” says Walter Dobgima, founder of Woodbury for Justice and Equality. “[Juneteenth] is about Black people gaining their freedom.” The activism group is planning to host a COVID-safe, in-person Juneteenth event this year. They will bring in local speakers and advocates of social justice movements to give motivational speeches during the community event.

Dobgima’s goal is to bring the community together to celebrate and educate about Juneteenth, and begin to start conversations with community members about progressing equality. “In order for me to be able to bring awareness, I have to engage the community to be aware of the history,” says Dobgima. “Now is the time to take action [and] to fully embrace it.” For event information, go to the Woodbury for Justice and Equality website at woodbury4je.com.

SIN CE SP R I N G 2020, animal shelters have seen an influx in adoptions. Families across America were getting new furry family members, many being puppies. Sigrid Dabelstein, professional Woodbury photographer, won first place in the 2020 Focus on Woodbury photo contest with her photo, Puppy Love! The photo was taken in May 2020 and shot with a

Dabelstein says she was in the “exact right moment at the right time,” as the puppy got to play with its new brother. “It’s one [photo] that will be timeless,” says Dabelstein. “Like, ‘Remember that one time we decided to get a puppy when we were quarantining,’ and it will just bring on these stories.” Last spring, she was inspired

by Front Steps, an organization dedicated to addressing homelessness, to do photoshoots with families who had recently adopted a puppy. That summer, Dabelstein and her camera couldn’t get enough of catching playful puppies, so she officially launched “Welcome Home Puppy Sessions.” “It was puppies everywhere,” Dabelstein says.
