New book boasts soaring shots of Lake Minnetonka. You may think you’ve seen Lake Minnetonka from every possible angle, enjoying everything its unique beauty has to offer, but have you seen it from above? A new book, Above Lake Minnetonka, presents readers with a fresh way to see their beloved lake. A year ago, photographer Steve Bernstein partnered with drone photographer Tom Gustafson to capture the lake in a new way. Gustafson had a background in similar work, having published books of photography: Above Lake Okoboji, Above Clear Lake, and Above Maui. “This was the perfect project at the perfect time for me. Once we made an agreement, I went on the shoot almost every day,” Bernstein says. The book was published in March and is sold
online, as well as at retailers around the lake, like Excelsior Bay Books and Lunds & Byerlys. Acclaim for the book is widespread, and Bernstein says that stores have difficulty keeping it on their shelves. While many local families are buying copies, the book is also popular as a keepsake for those who have relocated farther away from the lake. “It seems to be a great way for people to continue to feel connected to the community,” Bernstein says. Whether you’re near or far from the area, Above Lake Minnetonka presents a new way to enjoy one of Minnesota’s most beautiful lakes. “My goal was to capture the culture, activities and beauty of our amazing community,” Bernstein says. —Vivian Shinall

TAKE A TURN BACK IN TIME. The carrousel at the former Excelsior Amusement Park was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, a world-renowned carrousel company. It was housed in its own specially-designed circular white building with a red rooftop. The carrousel was hand-carved and hand-painted and included 42 horses and two chariots. The carrousel used music to attract riders, as well as provide entertainment during rides. The music was created by a band organ and featured marches and waltzes by John Philip Sousa, an American composer and conductor, who was known for his American military marches. Sadly, after almost 50 years, the Excelsior Amusement park closed and, in July of 1974, many of the items were auctioned off to the public. The carrousel building was moved to a private residence, known as Victoria Farms, and was later demolished when Deer Run Golf Club was built in Victoria. Several of the rides were purchased by operators of Valleyfair in Shakopee, including the carrousel. There was some resistance from people in the Excelsior area, who did not want the carrousel moved away from town. As a result, it was disassembled in the middle of the night, and each horse was hidden in various locations across the Twin Cities. Today, you can enjoy the nostalgic past of the carrousel by visiting Valleyfair, where the ride has taken center stage by the entrance since 1976. Deanna Bunkelman serves as the president of the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society.

Art from Within Local artist draws from ancient history to create contemporary masterpieces.

FROM THE COMFORT OF HIS HOME, local sculptural ceramicist Eric Pilhofer uses clay to combine the essence of spirituality with contemporary forms. With experience in drawing, painting, metal sculpture, patchwork and weaving, Pilhofer says he settled on clay because it combined his love for all disciplines into one. “Art isn’t what it chooses to be, but it is something that has to be,” he says. “If I don’t do it, my life is out of balance. It is more of a necessity than a choice.” Fascinated by history and archeology, each piece Pilhofer creates is a homage to ancestral spirituality, inspired by ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian culture. “I am not a religious person, but I feel that you can
capture a spirituality and a feeling in a piece of artwork,” he says. “Like it was done for a reason greater than the end result.” Through the symbolic nature of his work, Pilhofer uses a variety of shapes, colors and textures to fuse this cultural influence with ultramodern structures. With just a lump of clay, a surface to build on and his hands, Pilhofer uses a modified pinch method to create all of his pieces. Through pinching over small dabs of clay, he creates a layered, flowery and highly-textured appearance on the sculpture. Pilhofer says that it’s a meditative process that can lead to any type of form. “I look at each dab of clay like

a breath,” Pilhofer says. “What you are doing with each piece is worth more than the outcome because it is a process. I don’t dwell on the last dab or anticipate the next one.” Pilhofer was to showcase his work at American Craft Show this past spring with 250 other diverse makers, but, like many events this year, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. (It’s now set for October though Pilhofer is not able to attend.) “[Pilhofer] is hand making it with a humble material (clay) … We don’t get many artists like him, and he is a stand out,” says Pamela Diamond, previous director of American Craft Council’s (ACC) show marketing. “Though we have been unable to host our traditional large events, the importance of supporting makers’ livelihoods and sharing craft with the world is more important than ever,” says Keona Tranby, director of [ACC] marketing and communications. “… We have been in awe of makers’ tenacity to overcome challenges in sourcing, production and shipping through these challenging times ...”

was literally singing in the shower, freshman year of college, and somebody goes, ‘Who is that?’” Burton says. With a naturally lower voice, she never considered herself much of a singer, but that ditty in the shower secured her an invitation to audition to sing at a church
at St. Mary’s College (now St. Mary’s University of Minnesota) in Winona. Burton later joined a campus choir, auditioned for on-campus musical reviews and took voice lessons. “Then I took a 15-year hiatus while I was getting my career launched in corporate,” she says. Even during this break, Burton occasionally sang at weddings and other

When a coworker learned about her musical moonlighting, he/she mentioned that Beasley’s Big Band out of Twin Cities was looking for a new vocalist, and asked Burton if she’d audition. “It was horrible,” Burton says, “but Chuck Beasley, the founder, heard something in my voice.” Burton got the spot and has been singing with the 19-piece band for over 20 years. “Another part of my story is I have officially moved on from my corporate career, and I am now taking on my dream of being a full-time musician,” Burton says. To this end, Burton, a former retail and sales executive, started her own fivepiece band, Court’s in Session, which has played everything from weddings to galas and fundraisers. At 62, it’s not typical to embark on a new career. “At this point in my life, I still have my voice,” Burton says, “and there’s a part of me that’s saying, ‘If I don’t try now, I’ll never know.’ So, I’m taking that risk and saying, ‘Let me find out what’s possible ... have a lot of fun along the way, meet a ton of cool people and have experiences I wouldn’t have otherwise.’” Burton has also been exploring the versatility of her smaller band. “On the business side, I’m a service provider, which means I need to listen to my potential customers’ needs, and we adapt as needed,” she says. This means considering the venue size, the length of the event and the impression the host wants to make, resulting in enlisting a sixth player or going down to a three-piece. “I want to make sure what we bring to your party is exactly what’s needed to elevate the ambiance and not about taking over the event,” she says. Burton is taking the opportunity to hone her craft. “The five-piece [band] gives me the opportunity to stretch out a little more as a musician,” she says. “When you’re in a Big Band, the songs are written how the songs are written, and I don’t have as much leeway to express myself creatively. With my five-piece, we can do that.”

They give incredibly and make our lives so much richer … for that, they deserve every comfort and lots of fun.” While the stay is enjoyable, drop off can be another matter. “Sometimes well-intentioned dog parents create separation anxiety in their dogs,” Stelten-Beuning says. “When they get emotional and overreact when dropping their dogs off, the dog reads their energy, senses their anxiety, and that makes the

D
esigner Jeanne Anselmo won two awards from the Minnesota chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) this year. She was both honored and surprised because this was the first year she had entered—even though her work is well represented in homes and businesses and some high-profile venues across the metro area. In addition to countless Twin Cities homes, she decorates the Galleria Edina for the holidays. But the ASID awards just hadn’t been on her radar before this year. The two ASID awards that Anselmo won at this year’s gala were both for work on the same house. One was a first-place win for residential, multiple room/entire residence over 10,000 square feet, and the other was for a special room. The judging is anonymous, and the judges are from out of state, so that the work is evaluated on its own merits. The owner of the award-winning home, Lynn O’Neil,

says she wasn’t at all surprised to see Anselmo’s work honored by her peers. “She takes each project on with 100 percent commitment,” O’Neil says. “And she works with such a sense of integrity and thoughtfulness, combined with her extraordinary talent. By the end of the project, we had all become good friends.” Anselmo says the feeling is mutual. “It was a dream job,” she says. “They gave me the flexibility that gave me creative space. It was a perfect mesh with the client and the contractor.” The architect and general contractor is Bill Worms of BayCliff Homes. He and Anselmo have worked together for over 10 years. He was hired by the O’Neils and then brought Anselmo on board. “I knew that Jeanne would be the perfect choice to partner with on this amazing project,” he says. “She is one of the most creative and thoughtful designers I know. She has the unique ability to pull out the creative side of her clients, as well.” O’Neil agrees and says that both Anselmo and Worms “treated this house like it was their own.” The project began with a plan to add a bedroom and became a full-scale renovation and redesign that eventually added about 10,000 square feet to the original house. As the O’Neils worked with Anselmo and Worms, they began to see more and more possibilities … and it all seemed possible

because of the close relationship that grew between all the collaborators. “Jeanne really took time to get to know us and to understand how our family would live in this house,” O’Neil says. Anselmo says everything in the house is new—every lamp, pillow, table and coaster. She normally works alone, but a project this size meant that she needed a little help, so she brought in ASID designer Karen Soojian, who shares the awards with Anselmo. The house, on Lake Minnetonka, is not just home to O’Neil and her husband, John, but also O’Neil’s parents. And soon, Lynn and John’s son, who
just finished law school, will move home when he begins a new job with a Minneapolis firm … so the design had to take all those different generations into account. There are also a lot of friends and family, who visit often. O’Neil says that, in a way, their home is like “a little bed and breakfast.” Although, at 16,000 square feet, it’s not that little. Anselmo says she thinks of herself as a listener, who then is able to tell her clients’ story. “How can I take your house and make it aesthetically pleasing and tell your story?” is the question she asks herself at the beginning of each project. O’Neil says it makes it easier on family visitors with small children to have their own space. All the guest spaces are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. Anselmo’s design for John’s study or “vision room” resulted in the second of her two ASID awards for the year. The concept for the room began with John’s request for a space for images, books and mementoes that would remind him of the people and ideas that have shaped his life. The room is painted a dark color that draws the eye deeper into this comforting space that sets it apart from
the rest of the house. It won first place for “special purpose space.” Anselmo is pleased with the way the project came together and proud of the work she did, but she also says that she is grateful to have worked with the O’Neil family. “My job is to make people happy,” she says. “And to work with people who are as joyful as this family … was just a gift. For them, it was always about creating a welcoming home. They wanted it to be beautiful but in a warm and inviting way.” Winning the ASID awards may open new paths for Anselmo. “I don’t really
have a scope of work, in the way that some designers talk about the jobs they focus on,” she says. “It might be easier if I could say ‘Oh, this is the next direction I want to go,’ but every job and opportunity that I get teaches me something new.”

COVID-19 put a wrench into our family’s traditional summer plans. Gone were the favorite summer camps and closed were many community swimming pools. So what else could we do? The light bulb went off: We could bike. We weren’t alone in our sudden flash of inspiration. Since bike shops were deemed essential during Minnesota’s shelter-inplace order, they were swamped. “It has made things pretty crazy,” says Amy Patee, marketing coordinator of ERIK’s Bike Shop. “People who have never biked before are coming to buy their first bike. Those who haven’t ridden in years are choosing to dust off the bike in their garage and bring it in for a tuneup. Biking is something you can easily do alone or at a safe social distance with others. It’s a great stress reliever, a way to get exercise and it’s fun.” Over the past few months, we’ve gone through miles of trails with two tweens, one of whom has special needs. What
we’ve found are two gems of trails: Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail and Dakota Rail Regional Trail.
Dakota Rail Regional Trail
Dakota Rail Regional Trail stretches 30 miles, a fair chunk of it along the north shore of Lake Minnetonka. It starts in Wayzata and is scenic, but the first few miles wind through parklands that are interrupted by residential roads and driveways. While the scenery is pleasant, prepare for a plethora of stop signs along the route. The momentary pauses are worth it for the view while crossing the Arcola Bridge, providing a panoramic view of Crystal and Smith’s bays. The waterfront views continue for about nine miles. If you want a straight shot ride with no stop signs, park in Mound and continue on to the charming small towns of Mayer, New Germany and Lester Prairie. A good place to stop for food is about halfway through the trail in Spring

This trail spans more than 15 miles from Hopkins all the way to Carver Park Reserve in Waconia. It grazes Lake Minnetonka’s southern shoreline. If you’re feeling ambitious, haul a tent to camp at Carver Park Reserve. It’s an unpaved trail but is easily traversable
by any bike thanks to the crushed limestone. While there are various sights to see on the trail, such as the Lowry Nature Center and the Grimm Farm Historic Site, COVID-19 may cause closures. Some bikers like to bookend their trip with a beer, starting with a pint at LTD Brewing in Hopkins and finishing with another glass at Excelsior Brewing in Excelsior. If beer isn’t your thing and you would prefer to relax by the lake, Maynards dock is your ideal bet. For dessert, pick up a delicious treat from Adele’s Frozen Custard. If you find yourself biking beyond Excelsior, stop in Victoria for some axe throwing at Victoria Burrow.
Where to Park: There’s a small lot tucked away near the Wayzata post office. It’s at the intersection of Brown Road and N. Shore Drive in Wayzata. Start: Ride toward Minnetonka Beach, crossing the bridge over Crystal Bay. End: Eat lunch at Minnetonka Drive-In in Spring Park. Turn around, and go back after eating, or continue on for mini golf at Big Stone Mini Golf in Minnetrista.

“You’ve never been to Lord Fletcher’s?” my friend Amy yelled, with a tinge of playful incredulity. Then she tilted her head to the side and exclaimed, “It’s a Minnesota tradition!” We had moved from Rochester, N.Y., in 2007. It was now 2011. “You live in Minnetonka, and you’ve never been? Come on, we’re going,” she said. We left my husband to watch our two small kids. Our girl squad met us in the gravel parking lot of Lord Fletcher’s Old Lake Lodge. It was about 9 p.m., and when I walked onto the wharf, I was in awe of the giant deck and its myriad of overhead lights, boats in the docks and the night vista of Lake Minnetonka. We feasted on walleye sandwiches, always moist and tender with a good layer of bread accompanied by sweet tartar sauce. For dessert, we ordered the mud pie, a delicious blend of coffee ice cream, fudge and an Oreo crust. Friends have moved on, but our family still remains. We always visit once a summer, and we aren’t the only ones. Lord Fletcher’s Old Wharf seats 500 people and is always packed in the summer. The building itself offers a smorgasbord of dining options. The wharf can be classified as a massive outdoor party, while the main dining area seats 500 people and is more quiet and elegant. The Oar House is a bar on the lake level that can accommodate 100 people. Menus, décor and dishes for each area are different and reflect the atmosphere.
