Caring for houseplants is easier than you think.

S

urround yourself with nature, even when you’re indoors. Houseplants can have benefits beyond their beauty. Plants increase oxygen in the air, work as natural air purifiers and can also raise indoor humidity levels to help decrease incidences of dry skin and virus transmission. Plants can also be mood boosting! But many people fret over how best to care for houseplants. So, we curated some easy-to-follow plant-care advice. WATERING

Many people over water. Experts recommend letting plants dry out between watering. The best way to check that information is to stick your finger into the soil and see what’s happening beneath the surface. Is the soil cool and moist, or does the soil feel dry? Generally, when you feel the soil is dry, you want to give your plants a good soaking. LIGHTING

Keep plants in a bright area but out of direct sunlight. Most of the houseplants you see around here don’t need a hot sun. They don’t tolerate south-facing windows as well as they do when they’re backed out of it. Plants are like people. If you move into a house with too much room, you might become stressed rather than if you move into a place with the right amount of space. Most plants like to be comfortable in their pot. Let them get tight before moving. A GOOD GOLDEN RULE If a plant has yellow leaves, there’s typically a watering issue. If it has brown leaves, that tends to tell you there’s a light or heat issue.

Tip: Don’t be overly alarmed if the top of the plant goes into shock after it’s been repotted. It’s most likely redirecting resources for rebuilding a strong root system before turning its attention back to the leaves. —adapted from a story in St. Croix Valley Magazine by Madeline Kopiecki

Your Journey to a Healthier Life Begins at Holger Dental Group

Cutting edge dental practice connects the dots between oral and systemic health.

T

he link between oral and systemic health has long been Holger Dental Group’s core tenet. In times of widespread medical uncertainty, that connection is more important than ever. “Our mission is to guide people toward idealized wellbeing by optimizing their oral health,” Dr. Holger Meiser says. “The state of your oral environment and airway plays a crucial role in how your immune system responds to disease.” This dedication to complete health at Minnetonka’s most state-of-the-art oral health care facility begins with Dr. Meiser, who has expertise in implant dentistry, oral surgery, periodontal (gum) surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. Comprehensive care isn’t just about cleaning teeth and filling cavities - cosmetic and surgical treatments have an important role in overall health as well. The practice has even started to help patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. “People around the globe are having greater difficulty taking care of themselves both physically and emotionally,” Dr. Meiser says. “Everything compounds in the body, leading to an increase in the inflammatory burden systemically. Any unnecessary compromise of the immune system, including chronic inflammation from gum disease, which over 80% of

1020LKM_Book.indb 9

Americans have, takes resources away from fighting attacks such as COVID-19.” Holger Dental differentiates itself by striving for daily advancements in everything from education to technology. The entire team is utilizing the latest research on the link between COVID-19 and oral health. The strikingly modern office has added extra medical grade air purification units, high volume aerosol evacuation systems and plexiglass barriers. “We want to establish an environment where people feel taken care of and are as comfortable as possible,” Dr. Meiser says. The practice continues to grow, with a second office opening earlier this year in downtown Minneapolis. The primary location in Minnetonka has remained open throughout the pandemic to provide the community access to emergency care and support other offices.

KEEP THE LIGHTS ON WHILE YOU READ This time of year, many readers find themselves reaching for spooky reads or at least spookier than they’d normally seek. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James is a sophisticated ghost story, as well as a compelling story of two young women, two decades apart, seeking justice for those whose voices have

This page-turning novel is the perfect balance of spooky and thought-provoking and will stick with both those with a taste for suspense and those who consider themselves fainter of heart long past the final page. Minnetonka High School alumna percolates a new business.

BY VIVIAN SHINALL PHOTO BY TATE CARLSON

WHILE MANY OF this year’s college-bound class of 2020 may have spent their summer months enjoying a bit of down time in hopes of leaving in the fall for their respective schools, Edina native and 2020 graduate of Minnetonka High School (MHS) Annika Van Nest had other plans. In May, Van Nest opened Prickly Pear Coffee Bar, her first business venture—a mobile coffee bar. She characterizes it’s beginning as something of a whirlwind, stemming from her dream of opening a brick and mortar coffee shop that serves more than just coffee––tripling as a yoga studio and ministry center. “It will have constant exercise classes, serve unique drinks and host Bible studies, kids’ camps and fundraisers,” Van Nest says.

The idea for the coffee bar was set in motion when Van Nest was trying to find a caterer for her graduation party. As she looked over her options, she realized there was a lack of coffee catering businesses. “My boyfriend casually mentioned that a mobile coffee bar … could be a stepping stone toward my dream. I took what he said farther than he expected … Before I knew it, all the equipment was showing up on my doorstep, and I was starting a business,” Van Nest says. While the idea was initially a whim, it was backed by Van Nests’ education in classes and clubs and job experience as a barista at the 318 Café in Excelsior. Van Nest credits the VANTAGE global business program at MHS as a main source of her business and economics aware-

ness. “I loved the way the program was set up because it was so hands-on and all about experiential learning,” she says. Although the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow Van Nest to establish a regular event setting, she quickly adjusted, developing solutions to ensure that her fledgling business came out of the crisis even stronger. “We had our first event at Style Hunt in Excelsior on May 9 and adjusted to do curbside pickup and social distancing. The store wasn’t open yet for customers, but they had things spaced out on the sidewalk, perfect for Mother’s Day shopping,” Van Nest says. As she anticipates her next step, studying ministry and social entrepreneurship at Belmont University in Nashville this fall, Van Nest doesn’t plan to call it quits on her business and will take Prickly Pear Coffee Bar on the road. “We already have a few events lined up [in Nashville], including farmers markets and pop ups with local boutiques. Belmont is amazing with supporting and connecting their students, so I am excited for the potential to grow through them, as well,” Van Nest says. Prickly Pear Coffee Bar will be back in Minnesota next summer when Van Nest returns and is set to feature new specialty beverages, as well as fan-favorites, including the honey lavender lattes and raspberry ginger limeade.

Bliss in Balance

Acupuncture and holistic wellness clinic Balanced Being provides equilibrium. FOR FINDING A BALANCE BETWEEN YIN AND YANG IN YOUR LIFE, the health of

the body (physically and mentally) revolves around its interactions with the surrounding environment. As a means of balancing your body’s energy (known as qi), Chinese medicine focuses on finding moderation in your lifestyle to offset negative effects of certain habits that could otherwise lead to disease, illness or chronic conditions. What sets Chinese medicine apart from Western medicine is the focus beyond the body. Western practices focus on the anatomy of the human body, down to the cells, whereas, Chinese medicine embodies the synergistic energy of a person and their lifestyle as a preventative measure for future living. At local acupuncture and holistic wellness clinic Balanced Being, providers specialize in treating chronic pain, anything from headaches to muscular movements, through Chinese medicine (acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, dietary therapy and cranio sacral therapy). Founder, acupuncturist, herbalist and cranio sacral therapist Alexis Hileman began her journey in the Navy as a Chinese linguist for just over 11 years. When she became chronically sick during her service, she was unable to work due to the number of medical appointments she had to go to. Under numerous narcotics and other medications, Hileman found the only true solution to her pain was acupuncture. After an unresolved case related to her condition, she was medically discharged from the Navy. With her increased interest in healthier alterna-

tives to her pain, Hileman listened to her body to manage stress and maintain a healthy diet, eventually leading her to get off of all her medications. “It changed my life completely,” Hileman says. “I used to live by the military mentality of getting the mission done no matter the cost. I had to learn to start listening to my body and giving myself permission to slow down when I needed to.” After her personal shift in her wellbeing, Hileman knew that she wanted to share her experience with others, thus beginning her career as an acupuncturist. While attending Northwestern Health Sciences University for a master’s degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, Hileman gained hands-on experience as an intern at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, St. Francis Hospital and Woodwinds Hospital. “I always wanted a career that had a positive impact on my community and made the world a better place. Being an acupuncturist allows me to do that,” Hileman says. With a desire to educate and heal her community, Hileman hopes to expand Balanced Being by having multiple holistic professionals collaborating together to provide top-notch care to those in need.

Spruce Up Fall ahead with spring cleaning.

FALL PRESENTS ALL KINDS OF CHALLENGES.

BY HAILEY ALMSTED PHOTOS BY TATE CARLSON

First, it’s back-to-school, followed by extracurricular activities and sports (such as they are this year), which back right up to Halloween and the launch of the holidays. Handling it all can get messy, so why wait until spring to tidy up your home? Start now, and make fall the new spring when it comes to deep cleaning. Storage space is key when it comes to organizing, so ensure that you have all the room you need by getting rid of unused or outgrown clothing, shoes and accessories. Don’t’ just concentrate on bedroom closets. Those front closets run the risk of being black holes when it comes to long-forgotten items. To maximize space—and save time!—only store inseason items in your closets. Store out-of-season goods in labeled bins until the next season rolls around. For sweaters, scarves, jackets and boots, focus on vertical

space to store these larger items. Cascading hangers, folding methods and drawer dividers are additional space savers. Before holiday entertaining and cooking shifts into high gear, sort through the pantry, cleaning supplies, food storage containers and more. Toss out all expired foods, including spices, baking goods and canned or boxed goods. Label containers of pasta, cereal, snack foods and canned goods. Sort through food storage containers, making sure all lids and containers are accounted for. Prepare for cold weather by neatly packing up patio furniture. Keep dry cushions in labeled bins and cover furniture frames. Clean the deck and weather-proof or add a fresh coat of stain before the snow flies. Clean out and organize the garage—after all, you’ll need space for all the labeled bins, outside furniture and your car(s) once winter arrives.

MAKE IT QUICK

LANDING YOU IN YOUR NEW HOME

To steam clean your microwave, fill a microwave-safe bowl with a cup of water, two tablespoons white vinegar and a few drops of your favorite essential oil (or squeeze juice from lemon, lime or orange slices). Heat in the microwave (on high power) for five minutes, and let it sit for an additional five minutes before wiping the inside clean. To clean your windows, wait for a cloudy day. (If it’s sunny, the solution will dry too quickly, leaving streaks.) First, remove dirt and dust with a duster or vacuum. Don’t hold back on cleaning solution. Spray generously and use a microfiber cloth to dry windowpanes. (For a DIY glass cleaner, combine two cups water, 1/2 cup white vinegar and 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle.) To clean tile grout, mix 3/4 cup chlorine bleach with a gallon of water. Wearing rubber gloves, use a stiff brush to apply the solution. Let it sit for several minutes before scrubbing and rinsing. Be careful to not splatter the liquid on yourself or surrounding surfaces. For a less powerful, bleach-free cleaner, combine equal parts baking soda and hydrogen peroxide until it forms a paste. Apply to the grout, let it sit for several minutes, scrub and rinse.

It never hurts to get ahead of the holiday stress. Begin sorting through your holiday decorations, clearing out overused or broken décor and move decorations to an accessible spot to avoid scrambling when decorating day arrives. If guest rooms double as storage space, clear out any unnecessary items. Not only will this be a lifesaver the weekend before your guests arrive, but you’ll be able to focus on pressing matters, such as setting out fresh linens, dusting and vacuuming. After clearing the clutter, ensure that all light bulbs (and night lights!) are in working order, make sure bathroom supplies (i.e. toilet paper) are easy to find and in good supply.

Change of Menu An expert explains how nutritional needs alter over time. NUTRITIONAL HEALTH ISN’T A ONE-STOP-SHOP PROPOSITION. While we alter diets for children and

teens for proper growth and development, how many of us understand the importance of adjusting food intake as we age? For advice, we turned to Toni Swanson, RDN, CSG, LD, registered dietitian/nutritionist at Plymouth's Trillium Woods, a senior living community.

BY RENÉE STEWARTHESTER PHOTO BY TATE CARLSON

WHY DO NUTRITIONAL NEEDS CHANGE? TS: Our calorie needs decrease as people age due to a decrease in metabolism rate from a decrease in lean body mass. We experience a decrease in immune function, hearing function, stomach acid secretion and gastric emptying. This leads to a decrease in appetite and absorption of nutrients. Older adults also experience a decrease in pancreatic enzymes and liver function (the liver size actually decreases).

Furthermore, adults ages 55 and older often have a reduced number of taste cells from the salivary glands. This decrease, along with an accompanying increase in medications, can change flavor recognition and make foods unappetizing. Additionally, a person’s level of physical activity typically decreases with age, which affects weight management, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and even cognitive and emotional functioning. WHAT FOODS SHOULD BE LIMITED? According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20152020, everyone should limit intake of saturated and trans fats, added sugars and sodium. ARE FROZEN MEALS A GOOD OPTION? On one hand, they can be a good source of protein and

vegetables, but on the other hand, it’s important to watch the sodium content, to ensure you’re staying below the Dietary Guidelines’ recommended 2,300 milligrams or less of sodium per day. I have found that Healthy Choice Café Steamers are the best options for lower sodium, yet balanced meals. HOW MANY MEALS A DAY? It may be tempting to skip a meal here and there, but older adults should stick to three to six meals per day to help maintain the metabolism rate, as well as meeting calorie and nutrient needs.

LET'S TALK DINNING OUT. Most restaurants have their menu posted online, so you can look at your options ahead of time ... It is always great to split a meal at a restaurant since the portion sizes tend [larger than] what we actually need. Don’t have someone to share with? Ask to get half of your meal in a doggy bag. HOW ABOUT WATER ... The goal for water intake at any age is 8-10 glasses of water per day ... Drink water and other beverages on a schedule ... Add flavor to your water, including lowor no-calorie sweetener; fruit (limes, lemons, oranges or strawberries); spices (rosemary, cinnamon or mint); and vegetables (cucumbers). ... AND ALCOHOL INTAKE? At any age, but particularly for older adults, moderation is key. This means two glasses of wine or beer for men per day and one glass of wine or beer for women per day. WHAT ABOUT MALNUTRITION? According to the National Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging, half of older adults are at risk for malnutrition, which can lead to more falls, complications and hospital readmissions

If you’ve seen it once, you won’t see it twice. With an untraditional approach to floral arranging, owner of Rebel Girl Floral Sothea Keller, rebels against the ordinary. Vowing to never make the same arrangement twice, orders are custom made and created to give each flower a purpose. Sothea views herself as a garden florist, arranging “flowers for the wild at heart” and emphasizes the importance of creating a unique display while encapsulating the personality of each client. Her husband and business partner, James Keller, shares her approach. “I just want people to enjoy flowers and to experiment with just not having something typical,” he says. “I want them to be wowed.” The couple’s exposure to the floral industry does not fall short.

James’ mother and sister are professional florists, and Sothea has been in the business for almost 15 years. Working alongside her in-laws helped her learn the ropes. Primarily focusing her work on wedding arrangements, Sothea eventually began to branch out to other events and custom work. Recognizing that the wedding industry is filled with florists, Sothea took another route—one that celebrates other important moments in life. After she, unfortunately, attended several funerals, she noticed that a majority of the arrangements fell flat. Seeing the same stark variation of flowers, shapes and colors, Sothea knew that there was a void that needed to be filled in the industry. “I wanted them to be beautiful,” she says. “These events should be celebrating someone’s life rather

than mourning someone’s death.” Emphasizing the importance of representing the individual, she wanted her creations to emulate the memories that the person shared with others. Regardless of the occasion, the team makes each arrangement to order, and James says that clients often bring in photos for inspiration in hopes of achieving a certain

look or essence. Though Rebel Girl Floral maintains the desired character or color story that the client wants, it ensures that the team will never recreate a direct replica of a prior arrangement. “[The process of creating] is not standardized,” James says. “It allows us more flexibility to truly make something that is special for an individual.” Developing new ways of captur-

BEYOND THE VASE Pushing boundaries and taking an innovative approach, Rebel Girl Floral expands beyond the vase to wearable florals (think out-of-the-box boutonnieres, corsages and floral crowns) and illumafloral, which are LED light-infused flowers (primarily roses). With a background in technology, Sothea says that it was inevitable that James combined the two areas. Seeking innovation, James merged his two interests to develop Illumafloral. “Flowers are in a static place. The only innovative thing you can do with them is breeding new ones, James says. His creation sheds new light, literally, on arrangements. Giving off a soft, candlelit glow, flowers are illuminated with LED lights. Accentuated by the light, every detail in the petals is exposed, creating a breathtaking focal point.

In the fall and winter, sourcing stretches beyond the country to locate unique species, including lotus flowers and more, from suppliers in Holland and South America. With the vast majority of clientele granting free reign when it comes to design, this feeds Sothea’s imagination and desire to seek fresh ideas. “… I get bored when I use the same stuff,” she says. “I could love something one week but then use it so much that I want switch it up.”

SPORTS FANS ARE HUNGRY. MAYBE RAVENOUS IS A BETTER WORD FOR IT—HAVING SPENT THE BETTER PART OF THE YEAR WITHOUT WATCHING OR PLAYING THEIR FAVORITE SPORTS.

While it won’t premiere until 2022, sports lovers should be happy to know that there’ll be a new game in town. The National Rugby Football League (NRFL) is poised to move the sport into the U.S., and, according to league commissioner, Orono resident Michael Clements, “This isn’t your grandfather’s Oldsmobile.” Although many football fans spend August (pregames) through February engrossed by the triumphs and failures of their favorite college and professional teams, the summer months often seem to drag by, leaving contact-sport fans yearning for more content. “Over 50 percent of the American fan base is addicted to the tackle sport of football … So, during the offseason, rugby is nothing more than American football without the pads, as we call it—‘Steel with sex appeal,’” Clements says. League organizers are charging full steam ahead, aiming for a 2022 inaugural

season, which will extend from April to July. With the timeframe in mind, Clements and his team have their hands full, securing players and coordinating the many pieces of the puzzle, so the teams can be ready for the first drop kick of the season. Clearly, the players are one of the biggest moving parts. The NRFL plans to start at eight teams, with a roster of 40 players per team. Clements assures Minnesota fans that there will be one team in the Twin Cities. “What’s beautiful about our backyard here is not only do we have four major venues here from Target Field to U.S. Bank [Stadium] to TCF Bank [Stadium], as well as Allianz [Field], and the one thing all four have in common—they are dying for content,” he says. The league plans to bring in talent from rugby leagues around the world, while also attracting American talent.

... RUGBY IS NOTHING MORE THAN AMERICAN FOOTBALL WITHOUT THE PADS, AS WE CALL IT— STEEL WITH SEX APPEAL.

As NFL teams choose their rosters, they often have to cut many good players—to the tune of 864 players, who will be cut from their roster spots on NFL teams before each season. A large portion of these players, who have trained hard during the off season and throughout the preseason, are likely a good match for rugby. “We’ve taken players and sent them off to England and South Africa, and, after a couple of months, they’re the Man of the Match, so we know we have enormous horsepower here,” Clements says. To guide the journey, the NRFL has partnered with the National Football League Alumni Association, which consists of former players and people who have helped run every facet of the league, from administration to coaching. Among those who have helped this emerging league is Jeff Diamond, who ran the Minnesota Vikings and has been named an NFL Executive of the Year. “We’re really happy to have those

VOCABULARY THAT EVERY RUGBY FAN SHOULD KNOW TRY A touchdown in rugby is worth five points, and players must “touch the ball down” in the end zone to score. (Sound familiar? This is where the term “touchdown” in American football comes from.)

DROP KICK The drop kick is mandatory and used often in rugby. The ball must bounce on the field before being kicked. This type of kick is used for the

kickoff, restarts and to score a field or drop goal.

SCRUM Short for “scrummage,” this is the method of restarting play, which involves players packing closely together with their heads down and attempting to gain possession of the ball. It is utilized as a restart of play either after an accidental infringement or when the ball has gone out of play.

RUCK A ruck is formed when the ball is on the ground with at least one player in physical contact with a member of the opposition.

MAUL This occurs when at least three players from either side are in contact together, challenging the player with the ball and moving toward a goal line. Every player in the maul must have at least one arm bound to a teammate; otherwise

the referee will award a penalty to the opposing team.

KNOCK-ON Rugby is one of the few ballgames where the ball can only travel backward. It is a knock-on if a player accidentally knocks the ball forward with his hands or arm or through a fumble.

CONVERSION A place kick, worth two points, is awarded to the team that just scored a try.

types of individuals on board who can help with our operations nationally and can make sure … that we are on par with the best of the best,” Clements says. While rugby is popular globally, the U.S. could be one of the sport’s last frontiers. However, Clements doesn’t feel that the U.S. is too late to the game. “At the end of the day, America has an eternal fountain of youth, if you will, and a huge pond we can harvest players from for the simple reason that we are a contact–sports society,” he says. “Nobody else on the planet has the depth that we have here, and it comes down to awareness and opportunity.” Skeptics of the possibility for rugby’s success in the U.S. may be surprised to learn that this will not be the first time rugby has taken center stage here at a major venue. In 2016, on a bye weekend for the Chicago Bears, rugby moved into Soldier Field, selling out seats and breaking consumption records. To Clements, this further affirms the league’s ability to quickly become a staple for American fans. “We are big-league content. We are not a one-night stand,” he says.

Set up an outdoor food and beverage table, fire up a portable fire pit (safely, of course), and take a seat on your driveway or yard for a front row view of Halloween 2020.

into a medium bowl, and set aside. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Blend in pumpkin puree, buttermilk and vanilla. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture, and blend until combined. Spoon the batter into liners. Bake for approximately 18-20 minutes or until a cake tester inserted into the center of the cupcakes comes out clean. Cool and assemble.

Activities & Events

Spontaneity often reaps the best results. BY RENÉE STEWARTHESTER PHOTO BY ANN BEADLEREINITZ

THE LOOK OF DETERMINATION IS PRICELESS,

especially when it’s framed on the face of an eager athlete. Put me in coach, I’m ready! placed second in the Activities and Events category of our annual photo contest. With the aid of a Nikon D500, Nikon lens 50-300mm lens and natural light, Ann Beadle-Reinitz captured the photo of her niece Annabelle at the ballfields just below

Shirley Hills Primary School in Mound. “My favorite things to photograph are people and animals,” Beadle-Reinitz says. “I love the expressions, the faces and emotions you can capture, even when you are just having fun and goofing around people. If they don’t know you are taking pictures, you sometimes get the best results.”
