CLIMATE GROUP SUPPORTS MAPLE GROVE RESIDENT C A N D I DAT E F O R M N S E N AT E D I S T R I C T 3 4: BONNIE WESTLIN all is here, Halloween’s around the corner, and Election Day approaches. The changes bring the beautiful leaves at Elm Creek Park Reserve, a curiosity about a COVID Halloween, and a desire to turn off the TV until November 4th so we don’t have to watch any more negative political ads. But there are a few bright spots in the political landscape, and one of them is Maple Grove resident Bonnie Westlin. Westlin is a mother, a lawyer, and a relentless advocate for the people of her district. “I believe that there is more that connects us than divides us. But we need leaders who are

F

focused on our common values and beliefs rather than fueling divisive and corrosive politics.” As a family law attorney and mediator, Bonnie is a negotiator who will build bridges rather than fences. And most importantly, she’s a listener. As Senator Ann Rest says, “She is smart, thoughtful, persistent and dedicated to public service. She is a great and responsive listener and will bring the concerns of SD 34 to the State Senate with knowledge and passion.” Bonnie has been endorsed by a wide range of organizations, earning interest and support from Climate Vote Minnesota. The nonpartisan or-

ganization works to elect candidates to public office who champion policies that protect our climate for future generations. They also want to make sure voters know about the decisions their legislators have made related to climate policy. As election day nears, and we weary of partisan politics, negative ads, and division, there is still excitement around a candidate who will build healthy communities, create jobs for the 21st century economy, invest in public education, and protect our environment.

A Difficult Job Requires the Right Tools Christian Peterson’s unique skillset makes him your best bet for handling real estate transactions during a divorce.

N

avigating the real estate market is complicated. Doing so while navigating a divorce can be staggering without the right help.

Luckily, you have one of Minnesota’s only divorcespecialized real estate agents in your community. Christian Peterson has been in the real estate business for 15 years now. How does a real estate agent come to specialize in handling divorces? Peterson is also a licensed attorney—he still practices—and he found a way he could combine his skills to help people going through a difficult time. “I want to make sure that somebody in that really sensitive and vulnerable position experiences a smooth transition to whatever’s next in life,” Peterson says. “If there’s something I can do to make it easier or less stressful, I want to do it for them.” There are numerous extra factors to consider when selling or buying a home during a divorce. Court proceedings can lengthen a process where every extra day means losing money on your listing. Procedural complications can arise. “When two people aren’t getting along, there can be

1120MPG.indb 1

communication breakdowns,” Peterson says. “There is a lot of emotion involved.” Peterson knows how to wade through those emotions and disentangle them from real estate negotiations. In addition to his real estate and legal experience, he is a trained neutral. And Christian Peterson Properties is now a family business, with his wife joining as an operations manager. The couple has lived in Maple Grove for more than a decade now and their family is rounded out by three kids. Stay tuned for future updates on this growing business. Whether you’re selling the family home or looking for a place to start a new chapter in your life, you won’t find anyone better equipped to help you through the process than Christian Peterson.

elcome, November—It seems so much of our lives have taken on a new perspective this year. In some ways, life has become smaller, and choices need to be more deliberate. On the other hand, life’s required us to stretch our thinking and broaden our horizons. For me, this month elicits a sense of appreciation and anticipation for gathering around our table at Thanksgiving. Several years ago, we purchased a new dining table, one with three extra leaves, to accommodate our growing family—children, grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and a plus one, here and there. This year, I don’t know if I’ll need to drop in any leaves. COVID-19 has separated a few of us from each other. Jobs have pulled others away from the area. But no matter how many family Follow us ! members plan to take a seat in our dining room, See what we’re doing behind the my anticipation will not be dampened, and my scenes and around town! thankfulness will not be deterred. maplegrovemag.com I encourage you take another (or first time) look Maple Grove Magazine at Norman Rockwell’s Freedom From Want, which, @maplegrovemag for some, is one of this country’s quintessential @maplegrovemagazine Thanksgiving images. The image, along with three other paintings, was published in 1943 in the Saturday Evening Post to illustrate essays on President Franklin Roosevelt’s four freedoms (from his 1941 State of the Union Address). Now, we can do a deep dive into the meaning of the painting in context of then and now. But, for this purpose, I find it meaningful to note that most of the table guests appear to be joyfully looking at each other and not toward the roasted, trimmed turkey, which has made her grand appearance. Don’t get me wrong. The Thanksgiving menu is a pillar to the day, and I start charting my courses weeks before “the big shop.” Yet, regardless of what fills my serving dishes, I’ll take my cue from Mr. Rockwell—and set my eyes and heart upon those for whom I am fervently grateful. Until next time,

Small Town Feel with Cutting Edge Care Maple Grove Family Dental Clinic adds a new doctor to better serve local families.

M

aple Grove Family Dental Clinic has been serving local families for 35 years, and they’re still growing and innovating.

Dr. Robbie Huot is the clinic’s latest addition. He and Dr. Adam Erickson, who joined the clinic in 2018, have brought a wealth of new ideas and techniques to this local institution. Dr. Huot even has extensive training dealing with sleep apnea. Founded in 1985 by Dr. Steve Grinde, Maple Grove Family Dental has grown alongside the community it cares for. The clinic lives up to its name by serving the whole family, from seniors to young children coming for their first visit. “Establishing relationships is very rewarding for our doctors and staff,” says office manager Susie Larson. “We are here to stay and plan to provide quality dentistry to Maple Grove and the surrounding communities for many years to come.” The doctors at Maple Grove Family Dental love getting to know patients and their families and strive to make everyone as comfortable as possible. Their work is paying off—this year, they were voted Maple Grove’s Best Dental Practice. “Our patients tell us of the ‘small town feel’ they

1120MPG.indb 6

experience at our office,” Larson says. “They feel very welcomed and comfortable.” That small town feel doesn’t mean the clinic is behind the times, though. Cutting-edge technology and high-quality dental care are its cornerstones. The clinic even offers same day crowns thanks to in-office CEREC technology. “Patients love the convenience” Dr. S. Christopher Chang says. “They no longer have to deal with a temporary crown before receiving their final crown. The crowns are designed by the dentist and fit exactly how we want it.” For comprehensive, considerate dental care, give Maple Grove Family Dental a call. “Our mission is to be a family dental practice,” Larson says, “and to provide the best dental care in a comfortable, compassionate manner.”

K

eep busy this holiday season with pinecone projects for all ages. Searching for pinecones is a great outdoor family activity. Create wonderful bird feeders, and watch the wildlife enjoy a treat. Tie some twine to the top of your pinecone and roll the pinecone in peanut butter or apply the peanut butter with a knife. Once a good amount is applied, dip and press the cone into birdseed. Hang the pinecone from a tree branch, and watch the magic begin. Make a colorful, decorative centerpiece. Gather various types and sizes of pinecones, and spray paint/hand paint them with fun holiday colors. Add them to a clear glass vase or low bowl, and set on a table for fun holiday décor. Tip: To make the color pop, paint your pinecone white before applying additional colors. Design ornaments for gifting. Head to your local craft store for an assortment of ribbons. Create a long enough loop, tie a bow and hot glue the bow to the bottom of the pinecone. Hang it in a tree for decoration. Tip: Choose thinner ribbons that are easy to work with and that compare to the size of the pinecone. These also make great holiday gifts. —

Travel

Planning is the key ingredient for success on the road. Last year, more than 55 million travelers planned to start the Thanksgiving holiday with a trip of 50 or more miles away from home, according to the AAA. But, that was last year—and we all know 2020 is a different animal. Regardless of the state of the pandemic, travelers will likely continue to move about with caution. “AAA recommends being prepared,” says Linda Snyder, CTC vice president, travel and retail services. “Be sure you have multiple masks for each family member along with supplies of hand sanitizer, wipes and plastic baggies … Pack snacks and a cooler, so you don’t have to stop multiple times for refreshments, and be aware that many restaurants have shortened hours, so you want to be prepared.” “Check with each state you will visit or pass through to see the regulations. The interactive map and information on our website will help you navigate border rules, mask requirements and more,” Snyder says.

Snyder reminds drivers to check their cars’ tire pressure and tread (“You should be able to put a penny in the groves. If the forehead and hair on Abe are covered, your tires are great.”); battery (“If it is close to being dead, the cold will zap it even faster ... ”): oil; brakes, air filter and hose lines; fluid levels (“Top them off, and if snow and ice [are] in the forecast, throw in some extra wiper fluid with a low freezing point.”); and gas tank (“Start with a full tank of gas, and fill up before it drops below a quarter tank, just in case you get stranded.”) When packing, remember the emergency kit: • basic first aid supplies • blankets/warm clothes • bright-colored cloth/flag/rope • flashlight with batteries • paper and pen • phone and car chargers • shovel and sand/towels/kitty litter • water —Renée Stewart-Hester

Unwrap your family from consumer culture. It’s easy, especially for kids, to get wrapped up in consumer culture this time of year. It’s the perfect time to give back to the community alongside your children and remind them of what matters most. REMEMBER THE ANIMALS. Animal shelters are able to stay open due to donations. Consider visiting their websites to review their needs and purchase a few items. Most shelters have an Amazon wish list, which means you can ship items directly to the shelter. GIVE THE GIFT OF READING. Go through your child’s books and declutter the ones that are no longer being read. Divvy those up books among Free Little Libraries.

CARE FOR COMMUNITY HELPERS. Leave treats and drinks out on your doorstep for delivery drivers. Bring bagels and coffee to the office staff at your child’s school. | Microblogger provides tips for holiday gift-giving. PURCHASING GIFTS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON can be overwhelming. We want to get it “right,”

especially when it comes to the children in our lives. Nobody wants to see a child’s anticipation-filled face crumble into disappointment when a gift falls flat. Thankfully, microblogger Nicole Pierson of Maple Grove offers her tips for lightening this year’s gift-giving load.

BY NINA RAEMONT

Maple Grove Magazine: What’s your game plan? Nicole Pierson: … Want, Need, Wear, Read. Each child gets four gifts from us, and each gift is based in one of these categories. This system works well in our house

because we aim to generally have less “stuff” in our home. How can parents temper kids’ expectations? Set the stage early. If the holiday season is going to look different this year, have the conversation with your [children]. Children often surprise us with their understanding and resilience. Most things that are impactful during the holiday season can’t be bought [baking, watching a movie or decorating the tree]. What are some pitfalls to avoid? Avoid falling for the consumer culture and overbuying.

@beginathome Begin at Home

Every year, there will be a popular toy or gift. Curate your child’s gifts to suit them. Being intentional with your gifts means less wasted money, time and space in your home ... I’ve lived by the mantra “fewer better things,” and that aligns with my gift-giving as well. How about giving wins or fails? Experience gifts have been a huge win. Last year, [our sons] received two books about animals along with a zoo membership, which provided us with many fun day trips throughout the year … A teenager may love a gift certificate to get a pedicure and a 9-year-old aspiring chef would enjoy a coupon for a day of cooking … The biggest fails have almost always been gifts that we’ve purchased because they were “trendy.” What about go-to methods for buying for friends and family?

Consider an online wish list via Amazon or another site. This may seem impersonal, but it can be a game changer. You can keep a running list of wants throughout the year and always have ideas ready when family asks. Second, it takes the pressure off of the gift giver … How should parents handle their kids receiving expensive gifts? Choose gratitude. What an honor that a family member chose to be so generous toward your child. Remember that you are the parent. If you want to put the majority of the cash in their college fund, great, or put it toward an activity or sport. If you feel uncomfortable with the monetary value of gifts, it's time to have a conversation with the gift giver. How do you remember those in need?

Walks & Balks Umpire association brings flare to the baseball field through education and personal growth.

BRINGING FAIRNESS AND FLARE to the baseball

field, local umpire association Walks & Balks works to create a more stable environment for players and fans alike. As an organization that focuses on proper training and education for umpires, creator and manager Alex Miley says that the core of his business is harnessed on life lessons and development as individuals both on and off the field. “We don’t say you are part of this workplace. You are a part of this team,” Miley says. “I don’t want to create a huge empire; I want to make it so those who work with Walks & Balks have an opportunity to grow and learn more.” After working as an umpire during his sophomore year at Duke University, Miley realized how insufficiently things ran. With low umpire retention rates across the nation, he noticed that a lot of it had to do with the inability for umps to feel comfortable and knowledgeable with what they are doing on the field. With a desire to fill this void, Miley wanted to create something that would ensure stability for both the umpires and athletes. Through online learning, small-group teaching and individual check-ups, new umpires focus on basic field training, rules of the game and an introduction to the sport of baseball to ensure that they feel prepared for whatever is thrown at them—literally and figuratively. “As an ump, you don’t always have to be an enforcer but more of a facilitator,” Miley says. “You’re not the boss of the field. You are an integral part of it. You are important, but you have to understand other

perspectives on the field.” Acting as a source of encouragement for the players and the coaches, Miley says that his staff, ranging in age from 12 to 30, provides a strong degree of understanding as many of them are within a few years of the athletes. Though only two years in, Walks & Balks has seen great success, and Miley says that, in addition to the growth of the WB Sports Photography, he hopes to expand his business beyond recreational leagues and slide into softball and traveling programs, as well.

WB SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

In an effort to allow parents to focus on their kids playing games rather than worrying about taking the perfect photo, Miley created WB Sports Photography, which strives to capture the magic of the game for parents and fans. He's also exploring the addition of videography. Too many times, parents and fans can be found watching the game through a camera lens on the side of the bleachers, through a chain link fence or far out past the outfield. WB Sports Photography uses professionals to snap and edit action shots, which can be sent directly to individuals. Choosing from a range of 10-20 photos, parents and fans can also pick from a variety of shot types (pitching, throwing and running) of their player. MG

WISE WRAP

The furoshiki method of wrapping items (gifts to groceries) is steeped in Japanese tradition. Use bandanas, bedsheets, cloth napkins, fabric scraps, tablecloths, tea towels and more to wrap gifts in a more economical and Earthy-friendly way.

repurposed cloth in a bow to keep it all together. Tip: Consider Marcella Hazen’s recipe. The butter will have to come later, but add in a bottle of red blend wine. A generous splash or two gives the sauce a deeper flavor, and the remaining wine is ready to serve at dinner. • If your fisherman’s tackle box or creel is getting a little too, well, fishy, buy a new one, and fill it with bobbers, fishing line, lures, a stringer and more. Tip: Don’t forget a little container of Bactine and bandages. It can get rough out there on the water or in the boat. • Remember maps?—You know, the kind that were improperly refolded and tucked ( jammed) into cars’ glove or side door compartments. If your maps have been replaced by phone apps, give them new life as wrapping paper, especially for travelers, who no doubt, are chomping at the bit to get driving, flying or however they get going! Tip: Travel cubes aren’t just a trend; they’re a necessity for anyone on the go. Fill them with travel-size goodies, and use the map to wrap. • Who doesn’t love gift wrap with a purpose? Gather or print out coloring contest forms from local newspapers, businesses or towns. Wrap up a kid’s (or kid at heart's) gift, and the material can be used later as an art project. • On a similar note, grab the sports section of your favorite newspaper (or magazine!) to use for any athlete’s perfect present. Tip: Fold the paper into an envelope for a gift card to a local sporting goods store. MG

Client’s with a lower risk tolerance will typically generate lower returns as compared to clients with a higher risk tolerance. Individual client returns will vary based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, risk tolerance, income tax considerations given gains/losses against their basis, client directed transactions, time of withdrawals or contributions and the duration a client has been invested in the PCP. The PCP is typically allocated to equities and fiat. PCP returns are benchmarked against the S&P 500 with reinvested dividends, while the PCP does not reinvest dividends – without the re-investment of dividends, S&P 500 returns would have been lower over the disclosed time periods. ‘Clients Come First’ for Father-Son Investment Firm

L

ongtime Twin Cities wealth manager Josh Arnold is no longer a one-man band. After nearly 40 years of helping clients manage their assets, Josh was joined by his son Judd in February. Judd, a new father, returned from a nearly 20-year hiatus after stints in New York and Chicago, where he worked for three of the largest hedge funds in the industry.

Josh and Judd’s investment style reflects their combination of Wall Street and Main Street experience. Net of fees, their proprietary client portfolio has generated 2020 YTD returns of 63.2%, and 2019 returns of 46.9%. Since the start of 2018 and 2016, the proprietary client portfolio has generated cumulative net of fee returns of 142.1% / 245.4% vs. S&P 500 returns of 37.7% / 87.8% over the same time periods (refer to the disclosure for additional information, including potential risk of loss). “We continue to see opportunities in the current market,” Judd says. “Big dislocating events typically create attractive investments for years.”

Josh and Judd are registered investment advisors, which are held to a fiduciary standard of client care. “Clients come first,” Josh says. “The three generations of our family are the largest clients of the firm. We generate the majority of our income from the returns on our own assets as opposed to fees on our client’s assets. In addition to being fiduciaries, we believe this is the best form of client alignment.” Josh and Judd regularly meet with clients to provide a first or second opinion. “My 2-year-old daughter is our youngest client while our oldest is over 90,” Judd says. “Both are planning for the future.” For help with your investment assets, including your IRA, 401K, 403(b), please call Josh and Judd at their Edina office.

n expression of truly refined taste. Timeless style. A celebration of all that is glorious about France. Would you be surprised to know that these declarations illustrate—not bespoke fashion—but La Cornue ranges, handcrafted in Paris since 1908? As home cooks immerse themselves in cold weather cooking and traditional holiday culinary endeavors, why not elevate the function and beauty of a home’s kitchen with a gorgeous, décor-inspired range? After all, a bespoke nod isn’t just for the dapper and chic among us—its home is on the range, too. “Style is increasingly becoming an important consideration in kitchen design,” says Kelly Davert, general manager of Studio M Kitchen & Bath. “The current trends are favoring transitional, sleek and elegant kitchens with bold colors creating striking contrasts. So rather than hide appliances, ranges are being used to create bold design statements in the kitchen.” Is it time to move away from monochromatic color and finish choices when it comes to major appliances? “There is more fun and flexibility than there’s ever been in appliance finishes and accents, which can boost the designer look of any kitchen,” Davert says. “I’d say choose a range and finish that is a reflection of your lifestyle. Trends do come and go. Stainless steel is a classic finish and very safe and could even be considered a neutral in the room. The accents on a range can create warmth (unlacquered brass, polished nickel and matte black) or coolness (chrome) to achieve the overall design goal but add some interest to a range if someone isn’t comfortable with a cobalt blue or turquoise range. The new matte finishes in stainless, black and white are

again classic colors with a new spin on the finish that adds so much interest and beauty to a space.” Former Maple Grove resident Toni Ghilani purchased a Bertazzoni Heritage Series 36” in an ivory avorio gloss finish for her home kitchen. “I love cooking and baking and have always dreamed of having a statement range, not only one that looked beautiful but allowed me to cook a ridiculous amount of food,” she says. The Bertazzoni’s timeless look dovetailed with the traditional—yet modern—farmhouse design she was looking for, and its oven capacity was a significant draw. “We chose [it] to match our countertops and backsplash but also to ensure the range and shiplap hood were the focal points of the kitchen,” Ghilani says. “We added a lot of mixed metals in our kitchen design, and the range integrated a nice stainless steel frame that tied together well with our other appliances and stainless steel farmhouse sink. The avorio gloss finish is easy to clean, which is an added bonus with the amount of cooking we do.” Appearances aside, functionality still has a prominent seat the table, and there are some features that serious and novice cooks should consider. Davert points to Wi-Fi-enabled smart features for remote start and shut off for the range, status monitoring of oven items, steam and proofing options and dehydration features, which are available on most brands. “I would also add that having a range with versatile cooking options that include sous vide, induction and gas on the cooktop, along with a duel fuel oven, would get any cook’s heart pumping with excitement,” she says. La Cornue isn’t the only grande dame of the kitchen. Davert recommends Bertazzoni, Dacor, Fulgor, Milano, Signature, Viking and Wolf. “Kitchen Aid has an impressive choice of colors and accents to express yourself should someone want a pop of color, a value-inspired selection and professional look,” she says. The

s s e r P tS yled Sparking creativity and a passion for fashion, lifestyle blogger offers tips for winter styles. Feeling uninspired by her career as a kindergarten teacher, Taylor Brown wanted to channel her love for shopping and lifestyle in a way that could benefit others. Describing her style as “classic, attainable and typically casual,” Brown says that her goal is to “inspire women to look and feel confident in their skin without breaking the bank.” In 2015, the former Maple Grove resident developed The Styled Press, a blog that features a variety of lifestyle content and is home to beauty tips, seasonal fashion fads, family life updates, product reviews, gift ideas and shopping guides to finding bargains.

STYLE SEASON

PRO TIP: A boyfriend-style plaid blazer is a great way to effortlessly add dimension to any look. Dress it up for work with a tailored trouser and crisp blouse, or make it casual with a pair of your favorite jeans, a comfy graphic tee and fresh sneakers.

As a fulltime lifestyle blogger, Brown says her career is less structured than a typical 9-5 job, but it is all worth it in the end because she is doing what she loves. “It is definitely my passion project,” she says. “I put my heart and soul into it.” As the seasons change, so does Brown’s fashion eye. We turned to her for some winter style inspiration. With trends coming and going so quickly, Brown says that fads tend to upcycle from season to season in order to stay current with the times and of course, weather conditions. She says that the biggest challenge in winter fashion is being able to stay warm and

comfortable while making a flattering statement. “People don’t want to look like a big marshmallow,” she says. Though staying warm is important, Brown says that you don’t always have to rely on a puffy jacket. Instead, layer different textured sweaters, vests and scarves for a cute, yet effortless look. To draw more interest to these basic elements, Brown suggests combining a variation of tones and textiles from accessories like animal print (leopard, crocodile or snakeskin) ankle boots, a multicolored plaid scarf or wide brim hats and fedoras. However, style is not the only thing to consid-

“It is definitely my passion project. I put my heart and soul into it. ” PRO TIP: Spice up your night, and make your winter date night look edgy and cute with a basic camisole, structured blazer, faux leather leggings and funky booties.

er. Brown says that given our brutal Minnesota winters, it is also important to think about and invest in items that are practical. And sometimes that can come with a heftier price tag. But a higher value can equate with better quality pieces that are built withstand a variety of weather conditions and are made to last. Stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, DSW and Nordstrom Rack carry a diverse collection of quality brands from Sorel, UGG, North Face and Patagonia. Brown says that these brands offer a great selection of outerwear for the whole family that is not only fashion forward, but also worth the extra dollar. For a trendier approach, Brown suggests places like Evereve, Flaunt Accessories and Leela & Lavender in Maple Grove for dayto-day wear like cardigans, sweaters, ponchos, wraps and designer denim. Summer and fall trends filled with neons, tie dyes, graphic tees and ribbed materials will transition into cold-weather variations using the same styles but in longer layers and warmer neutral tones, such as taupe, wine tones, burgundy, olive and burnt orange. In addition, layering can also be a great way to draw interest and add texture from warmer fabrics like velvet, faux fur, tweed and leather. MG

I

n this neck of the woods/Midwest, there are plenty of folks who dream of and hope for snow—and lots of it. Included in the group could be your family dog. Three Rivers Parks includes the 4,900-acre Elm Creek Park Reserve, featuring plenty of outdoor cold-weather amenities at its Winter Recreation Area. Cross country skiing, tubing, downhill and telemark skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and sledding are

perfect for the human winter lover, but how about dogs? What’s in it for them? The park reserve has them covered, too. Skijoring (human on cross-country skis with the dog on a leash) and dog-sledding options are available because, you know, even dogs come down with cases of cabin fever. Be sure to check the park’s website for weather and trail conditions. —Renée Stewart-Hester

The countdown starts now—three months of eat, drink and be merry— with Thanksgiving, December holidays and New Year’s all in the mix. Speaking of mix, how about hosts gift themselves with big batch beverage recipes, which add extra cheer to any gathering? Signature cocktails have become de rigueur at home events, and we’re not complaining. But standing post at the beverage cart or bar area can take the fun out of any party for the host. By offering big batch beverages, hosts can mix and mingle, rather than mix, serve and repeat. John Farrell, Haskell’s Wine and Spirits, and Bill Princeton, Princeton’s Liquors, offer beverage recipe recommendations to not only spice up the holiday season, but also save time and money.

Cheers to a fruity drink for the tots, teens and teetotalers. A day before: Using a Bundt cake pan, add a variety of fruits (berries and orange and apple slices)—the more the merrier. Fill the pan with water to cover the fruit; put in the freezer. The day of serving: In a punch bowl, add 2 liters of Sprite and 2-3 oz. of grenadine syrup; stir together. Take the Bundt pan out of the freezer, remove the ice mold from the pan, and place it in the punch bowl. The ice mold will not only serve as a beautiful centerpiece to your liquified work of art, but it will also keep the drink cold.

MULLED WINE

THE LIBERTINE (HASKELL’S) “Rosemary, bourbon and maple syrup—how can you go wrong?” Farrell says. • 2 oz. simple syrup • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary • 4 oz. bourbon • 2 oz. fresh lemon juice • 2 tsp. orange marmalade • 1 Tbsp. maple syrup • 1 Tbsp. fresh orange juice • 1 egg white

Boil simple syrup and one sprig of rosemary in a small saucepan; cool. Discard rosemary, and transfer syrup to a cocktail shaker with bourbon, lemon juice and marmalade. Add ice, shake until chilled, and strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Add maple

syrup, orange juice and egg white to the shaker; shake until frothy. Spoon the froth over the top of the cocktail; garnish with remaining rosemary sprig.

MULLED WINE (HASKELL’S)

Here’s a perfect excuse get the slow cooker away from the entrée and into the beverage mix. Mulling spices are available at most wine stores during the holiday season, but if you can’t find them, put star anise, cinnamon, cloves and allspice in a tied cheese cloth. Add a bottle or two of red wine to your crockpot or slow cooker of choice. Add the mulling spices. Use the lowest setting, and warm the wine, making sure to not boil or cook the beverage. Serve in your favorite mugs.

THIRD PLACE Pets Snuggle Bug

Snuggle Bug

“I felt inspired to take the picture in that moment …”

BY RENÉE STEWARTHESTER PHOTO BY SARAH CUPRYNA

THIS TIME OF YEAR naturally calls for snuggles, and Sarah Cupryna’s Snuggle Bug placed third in the Pets category of our annual photo contest. Cupryna took the photo at her home one afternoon, as her dog was cuddled up and cozy. “I felt inspired to take the picture in that moment because we are always on the run that I had to stop to remember to slow down and enjoy the snuggles like she does,” she says. Using the portrait mode on her iPhone 8 Plus was all the equipment she needed. “What I liked about this picture was how she was so content … snuggled up with the

pillow and blanket,” Cupryna says. While animals remain favorite subjects for Cupryna’s photos, she also is drawn to nature. “I love getting outside to find that ‘perfect’ photogenic moment,” she says. MG
