Overall Art Competition Winner, Charlotte Sherlock, age 9 ‘Our future is hanging in the balance’ bee mobile

Shattering the Future Infinite Possibility There are a thousand different futures That they could have. Like A candle flame; One drop of water, One breath of wind, Would be the end. The future depends on the past. We are that past. It will be our fault If it goes wrong. We are the ones Who can shatter that future.

Elephants Synonymous with David Shepherd, the elephant is the largest land mammal on earth. These beautiful giants live in family groups and are known for their sensitivity. The demand for ivory from the Far East is fuelling a new wave of ivory poaching and pushing the species towards extinction.

Elephants Once endangered now protected, Their trunks held high. Feeding off the trees, The noble elephant But poachers still lured by gleaming tusks, Oh those great pounding feet, Put to rest by guns. 1ST PRIZE (8-10 Category) Olivier Greeves Aged 9 Brighton College Prep School

STIRRED The sky appears stirred, like soup. Clouds rise, misshapen sunken bread, floating indefinitely, Licked by feint aeroplane trails that whisk crème fraiche Around a the vast breadth of heavy, cooling colour. Birds are sprinkled unevenly, Seasoned, In unified swarms of dark slashes. Grey brick breaks the surface; Rusting cutlery intercepts the smooth skin And reflected light sprinkles Artificial, Unwelcome across the enclosing bowl.

Alina Kuznetsova, age 9, Russia

Man steals a heaping steaming spoonful with greed And flecking pidgeons dart to the cool metal. Seasoning crosses the china And weighted, textured drips slop, Leaving faded paths And marks We cannot wipe away. 1ST JOINT (Age 14 – 16 Catergory) Emma Louise Pudge Age 16 Prior’s Field School, Godalming Daria Grushin, age 15, Russia

FRAGILE FUTURE Come run through the pinetrails of the forest Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth Come roll in all the lushious greenery all around you From the iroko to the timber, to the wild rose From the elephant to the hawk, to the little ant All the trees and wildlife – that is me Have you for once thought of my worth? Have you bothered to know how I give to you? But if you cut down and kill, you will never know Yet I cry – oh what a fragile future.

Elizabeth Royd, age 7, Weyfield Primary School

The raindrops and the wind are my brothers for they caress me The blackbird and the starling are my friends, They make me flutter in rhythmic steps like the victorious war lord We all are connected one to another in a cycle, in a hoop unending But if you cut down and kill, you will never know Yet I cry – on what a fragile future. If you kill and destroy me – oh behold a fragile future of greed The blackbird and the starling become silenced The rainstorm hits hard on my back washing me away The trees loose their nutrients, their nourishment leaving me sliding and slipping away The wildlife cries for help as they become homeless How dead the earth will become without me How hungry and impoverished you will leave yourself Stop! Oh please stop Think twice! Yes, think again Don’t cut me down! Don’t kill and sell me! Take care now this fragile-future JOINT 1ST PRIZE (14 – 16 Category) Eze M Lovelyn, age 15, Nigeria

ELEPHANT’S SONG

Megan Dunne, age 14, Tollbar Academy

At the watering hole there are musical cries, Great fountains of water are sprayed at the skies, Strong, charcoal bodies with dark wrinkled features, These, surely, are Kenya’s most beautiful creatures, But a saddening blue are the notes that they sing, For they know that their future’s a vulnerable thing, These Creatures await a terrible fate, As they bellow and bathe and compete for a mate, As you stalk them and watch them all mighty and wild, Do you see them as money, not father and child, Do you aim for his brains when you shoot through his hide, Does your small heart not ache for the calf at his side, And when the brave creature cascades to his knees, Do you know that your face is the last thing that he sees, Once you’ve run with your gun to the place where he fell, Is that all you can think of – goods that you’ll sell, Do you not hear his last trumpeting cry, As the humble beast closes his dark eyes to die. He’s a grandiose giant you’ve known from the start, So are his tusks truly worth more than his heart, Yes, why do you poach when you know it’s so wrong, Do you not hear the great elephant’s song? 2ND Prize (Age 14 – 16 Category) Philippa Crundwell age 14, Millais School,

A 12 EYED MONSTER Cars driving down the street, Like a thieving monster, Striking holes on the Ozone, Nobody cars about our earth, Thinking it will go on forever, With 12 lights, bright, shining eyes. You look after these creatures, I don’t understand why you can’t look after the Earth, It rampages the Earth, It’s thieving monster, With 12 lights, bright, shining eyes.
