“I was once told that if you really love what you are doing, you will never work a day in your life. I truly believe this is what happened to me.” Growing up, Jacqueline Bernard always had a passion for style, fashion and creativity. Spending time in her father’s salons at a very young age, she was able to see firsthand that what happened there went a lot deeper than just a haircut. It was the total experience - not only making the client look their best but also feel their best. At the age of 22, Jacqueline was runner-up for Michigan Hairdresser of the Year and won Tiffany Awards for both hair colour and editorial. Through much hard work and dedication, she was awarded Michigan’s Hair Colorist of the Year in 2009 and then the Tiffany Award for Formal Hair the following year. Jacqueline is honored to be one of the prestigious TIGI® Talent Team, and is thrilled for the opportunities it has afforded her – educating in salons and on stage across the nation and working on the TIGI® Session Team at New York Fashion Week.

Caprice Hammon first discovered her love of the beauty industry while studying photography at Columbia College in Chicago. While assisting at a photo shoot, she stepped in to fill the role of make-up artist and immediately she was hooked. Today she is a stylist in Portland, Oregon, and a TIGI® Talent Cosmetics Artist. She finds inspiration in fashion, following trends and different elements, eras, textures and genres depending on what she is working on. She thrives on education, building relationships and creating art through the mediums of hair and make-up. Caprice’s advice to young stylists: “Never give up. She began beauty school at 16 when still in high school and was thrilled when she received a scholarship for Mr. Lee’s Beauty School. A few years after beauty school, Trish landed a spot at London House Hair Design in Burien, WA which has been a TIGI® salon for 25 years now. She was on top of the world and enjoying every minute of being a hairstylist. She was living the dream and very content with her life, however in 1997 her whole world turned upside down when she felt a pea-sized lump on her breastbone. “I wasn’t worried at first and dismissed it since it was so small and nothing abnormal had shown up during a previous mammogram,” says Forderer. When she went into work that morning, she started talking to one of her favorite clients, Judith, who had been coming to her for years. Judith nervously told Trish that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Trish was shocked and devastated and felt that it was the right time to tell Judith about the lump she had found on her breastbone earlier that day. Judith was alarmed and begged her to call the doctor immediately. Trish assured her that she would call as soon as she woke up the following morning. “I was thoroughly confident that nothing was wrong when I entered the doctor’s office, but after my ultrasound, I was devastated to find out that I had two tumors in my right breast and was ordered an MRI, “says Forderer. A few weeks later, the MRI detected more tumors and after several biopsies, she was informed that she had breast cancer. She didn’t know what she was going to do as her mind started racing with hundreds of different thoughts and questions. She couldn’t quite wrap her head around all of the fear, anxiety and grief. The doctors told her that the most important thing she needed, besides any surgery, was support, and Trish was very fortunate to have endless amounts of support from family, friends and coworkers. Trish had 26 lymph nodes removed, completed 3 treatments of chemotherapy, 18 months of Taxol chemo and 5 years of Tamofixen. She also had reconstructive surgery on her breast which was lost due to skin damage. She has now been cancer free for more than 17 years! “I thank God every day and try to live life to the fullest. I couldn’t have done this without all of the wonderful people who guided me through this rough journey, especially my client, Judith,” says Forderer. One in eight women are affected by breast cancer.

WHAT IS THE PH LEVEL OF REBOOT™ SCALP SHAMPOO? The pH level is approximately 4.8-5.4 making it slightly acidic (that’s a good thing!). Acidity in shampoo helps to strengthen the inter-protein bonds within the hair fiber and smooth down the cuticle leaving hair softer and shinier.
WHAT IS ZINC PYRITHIONE? It has fungistatic properties (can slow down the rate at which fungal cells multiply), and acts as a bacteriostatic (inhibits bacterial cells from multiplying). The weird wide world of hair shows is one that most people will never see. It’s an exclusive club (of sorts) that requires attendees be a member of the salon industry (or, in this case, a curious writer) to gain admission. These trade shows span the globe, and while the vibe is mostly dictated by geography— Salon International London skews trendy, Top Hair International in Germany is edgier, and America’s Beauty Show in Chicago is a decidedly Midwestern affair (more on that later)— the objective is always to educate, entertain, and, most importantly, sell hair products. Held at the Windy City’s McCormick Place Convention Center, ABS features football-stadium-
sized rooms crammed with a dizzying number of booths, mostly occupied by haircare brands (along with a smattering of companies selling equipment like salon chairs and shears). They hawk their wares to salon owners, many of whom lug wheelie suitcases stuffed with discounted goods and free samples. Some of the booths feature small stages on which they offer brief cutting and coloring demos. A permanent cloud of hairspray hangs over the whole affair. What can be gleaned from ABS is this: Much of America is impervious to magazine-ascribed beauty trends. That whole bedheadat-the-beach thing isn’t happening here, as among the 50,000 showgoers, a majority displays a dogged allegiance to the Kate Gosselin reverse mullet (or as a friend derisively calls it, the Bloomin’ Onion). Amid a convention center full of Gosselin disciples, Londonbased TIGI is an oasis of cool (nary a chunky highlight or asymmetrical chop in sight), with a mission to convince the pros to follow a more fashion-forward path. Tasked with communicating TIGI’s trend-driven vision is the brand’s global creative director Nick Irwin. “I’m kind of in two worlds: One is the
high editorial sessions and the other involves traveling the globe doing these big trade events, where I’m spreading the message of the fashion world,” says Irwin. “They might think, ‘ Oh, that’s rubbish.’ If I’ve converted five or six people, that’s who I’m concerned with. They’re the ones who mean a lot to me.” Irwin’s chance to enlighten happens during the TIGI demonstration, which is presented to a few hundred people gathered around a stage within a cavernous ballroom (previous presentations included a parade of cartoonish wigs and a wedding hair how-to hosted by a jokecracking stylist). The brand’s backstage pedigree means Irwin focuses on looks he crafted for the recent spring and fall fashion weeks in London and New York. He and his team offer instructions on creating a few of them, and then present a fashion show
with models rocking his runway creations while wearing pieces from the corresponding collection. Some of the more theatrical looks are met with a bit of skepticism, but it seems like most are enjoying this glimpse into the world of fashion. “I try to pick looks that are a good balance between something slightly edgier, like the Mark Fast gothic wig, and ones that are more appealing to commercial hairdressers, like Ruffian’s beautiful blowdry,” says Irwin. “The most important thing is to educate.” The culmination of the weekend is the Stylist Choice Awards, which is like the SAGs of the salon industry but with free drink tickets, a thumping soundtrack, and racy on-stage banter. Between awards, some brands present abbreviated demos, which means that Irwin gets yet another chance to share his vision—this time with a larger, more captive audience. For someone who usually works behind the scenes, he’s surprisingly comfortable doing his thing in front of thousands of industry pros. But, again, it’s a testament to his belief that he has a responsibility to make stylists aware of the trends and fashion’s relationship to hair. “TIGI was founded on this fashion platform so we made a really clear decision to have that equity of authenticity backstage,” explains Irwin. “It’s always been in our DNA.” It could be the booze or the celebratory atmosphere, but on this go-round, his work is met with giddy, unequivocal approval. After 10 minutes of how-tos, Irwin wraps things up with a quick bow and vanishes behind a phalanx of beaming models. The crowd—and soon, I suspect, their hair, too—goes wild.

TIGI® Global Creative Director, Nick Irwin, and the US Session Team recently wrapped up an influential weekend of inspiring hairstyling at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - Swim 2014 in Miami, Florida. Designers We Are Handsome, Suboo and Mara Hoffman, some of the industry’s most attention grabbing and trendy names, worked closely with Nick to make their boldest hair fantasies come true! In particular, Mara Hoffman and Nick, a cosmically connected duo, collaborated to create what can only be called the ‘graphic, Guatemalan jungle warrior’ look. This look incorporated ‘candy-flossy’ textured curls, a 3-plait braid and palm leaf accent to create a look that even the most classic fashionista can use as inspiration to add a little bohemian chic to her look.

Hair by: CATWALK® by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin Inspiration: “Nick, let’s do something EPIC,” was the first thing designer Mara Hoffman said to TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin at the Miami SWIM 15 hair-test. This impactful look was based on the notion that all things (and fashion collections) are derived from and rooted in nature. Through conversations surrounding ‘plant worship and devotion’ and ‘living off the land’ (and perhaps even the hallucinogenic properties of some plants), Mara and Nick landed on a very specific girl who they lovingly refer to as a ‘graphic, Guatemalan jungle warrior’.
Jungle Naturalista How-To: 1. Using a layered approach, glue in double wefts of hair from ear to ear at the back of the head until desired length and fullness is achieved. 2. Create a clean, center part and use CATWALK® Work It Hairspray to achieve definition. 3. Using a large tong, ‘curl’ non-uniform 2-inch sections of hair towards the face; prep and set each ‘curl’ with CATWALK® Work It Hairspray. 4. Once head is fully ‘curled’, use a flat brush to gently brush out and back-brush the curls to achieve the desired ‘candy-flossy’ texture. 5. Gather most of the hair at the back and prep the bottom 3-inches with CATWALK® Camera Ready™ Shine Spray before braiding said section in a 3-plait technique. Secure with clear elastic. 6. Attach a small top section of palm leaves to the bottom of the braid using another clear elastic and a single palm leaf to wrap around/cover the end of the braid. 7.
