The building of the former office for regional administration built in 1772 is located opposite St. Martin’s Roman Catholic Church. It has housed the Turiec Gallery 13 (Turčianska galéria) since 1987 displaying its permanent exposition of 20th century Slovak modern art. Besides the regular exhibitions and chamber concerts, the gallery also cyclically organizes international events – Bienniale of Illustrations (for children) and Bienniale of Book Art (for authors and lovers of beautiful books). To the east of the Turiec Gallery, there is the Group of statutes 14 (a sculpture) (1941) by the sculptor Fraňo Štefunko, representing Jánošík with his group that symbolizes the Slovak revolt against fascism.

The square is then divided into two parts, starting from the Millenium building. The first part ends at the Memorandum Square, where the Memorandum Assembly of the Slovak Nation took place under the linden trees outside of the Evangelical Church A.C. 3 on 6th and 7th of June, 1861. A significant document – the first comprehensive programme of autonomous Slovak policy – the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation was signed here.

The oldest landmark of the city, St. Martin’s Roman Catholic Church 12 , is situated on the other side of the square. The town of Martin was named after its church patron. The church was built in Roman style in the 2nd half of the 13th century, and fresco paintings from the 14th century are preserved here. The tomb of the Révai family, the calvary with 14 relieves and “Pieta” from Fraňo Štefunko, the national artist, as well as a painting of Madonna (the Mother of God) by the national artist Martin Benka, can be found in the church.

The Slovak Chamber Theatre has annually organized a theatrical festival entitled „Touches and Connections“. One of the festival‘s ambitions is to look for and promote the most interesting and inspiring theatrical productions. The building of the National House is located to the west of the glass building named “Millennium” 1 , which together with the reconstructed pedestrian zone won the most significant award in Slovakia - „Building of the Year 2003“. The National House 2 was built in the years 1888 to 1890 by the Society of Property Owners according to the design of the architect Blažej Bulla. From World War II until 2001, when its reconstruction began, the National House was the seat of the Slovak Chamber Theatre (formerly the Theatre of the Slovak National Uprising). Since December 2008, the National House has reopened to public. Furthermore, the Theatre Studio which was built in 1994 and is one of the most modern and best equipped theaters in Slovakia, belongs to the Slovak Chamber Theatre.

If you’d have visited Martin three hundred years ago, you would have V. found Žin gor a a small village similar to most in SlovaMlá been founkia. Martin is likely to have dež e ded in the beginning of 12th century and the oldest written record of the Villa Sancti Martini (a villa of the Saint Martin) dates back to 1284. The turning point in modern history occurred in the revolutionary year of 1848 after a performance by Štúr’s Zimný followers, which gained a positive response in both Martin and the whole Turiec Region. During the Hrd štadión ino for Slovak historical and three centuries of historical development, Martin became a unique center vS NP cultural life. Nowadays, Martin is a metropolis of the Turiec Region, a modern city, where the center has undergone significant reconstruction. The historic city center is not large. Recurrent fires in the past have repeatedly damaged the town, which has resulted in few historical buildings. Most of them originate from the late 19th and early 20th century and were built in an Art Nouveau style.
