CONCEPTUALIZATION.

PROJECT TYPE: Urban Planning.

IDEA: We were tasked to examine the de ning elements of suburbia and looks for ways in which we could leverage current trends and technologies to advance the trajectory of these elements to develop a new suburbia typology. Seeing how technological innovations in transportation have historically in uenced surbuban design, I decided to start my exploration with roads. I began with looking at the amount of space suburban roads, and driveways took up, in comparison to how often those spaces were actually occupied by the vehicles they were made to accomodate, and it seemed wasteful. e scale, function, and capability of transportation were changing with the introduction of autonomus vehicles like self-driving cars and delivery pods, to ride-share scooters and the likes. And with Americans starting to massively embrace this new “gig economy” trend, cars could be seen to look like an “on-demand” entity, as opposed a permanent xtture in suburban life en if cars are no longer a permanent xture in suburbia, that makes way for the spaces they take in suburbia to be rehabilitated or repurposed into more purposeful spaces for the community.

PROJECT TYPE: Software Development

IDEA: In my current company, we take on a lot of adaptive re-use projects, and that has us looking at a lot of old existing hand drawings of old buildings, and trying to get them into the di erent drafting software’s we use to design in this new technological era. Doing this manually is time consuming, and design already is a time consuming process already so I sought out a way to possibly streamline this process. So with my little knowledge on machine learning and arti cial intelligence, I started to brainstorm how we could use these technologies, some of which we already use in our design softwares like photoshop and the likes to create a plug-in that can read, understand, and translate the old drawings into lines of code that the Revit API can understand, and then translate into the Revit software, and give us a headstart in working on these adaptive re-use projects. An example would be optical character recognition (OCR) which could recognise patterns (materials), and line shapes(wall boundaries), coupled with Image Tracing and Image Recognition, which could convert hand drawings into vector images that can be understood by the drafting software.
