Tiki’s story is remarkable, a part of the fabric of the surf industry in Britain. Tim Heyland was a pioneer. His upbringing took him around the world. A seeker of adventure, surfing offered Tim a new set of challenges. One of the first British surfers to challenge the waves of Hawaii’s North Shore, Tim’s early forays are peppered with stories and characters from the golden era of surf; surfing places like Sunset with Fred Hemmings and Paul Staunch or Makaha with Buffalo. Dave Aldrich-Smith’s route into surfing is a tale in itself – while enjoying a work stay on a ranch in the mid-west America, Dave was drafted into the Vietnam War. Not wishing to fight for Uncle Sam in ‘63, Dave took the first Greyhound bus to California, hired a board and never looked back. Landing in Hermosa beach again in ’69 he was taken under the wing of Nick Mirandon (brother of Bear Mirandon on whom the character ‘The Bear’ in the film Big Wednesday is based) and shown around the shaping rooms of So Cal. Back in Britain, they took their combined expertise and knowledge and got to work. Without any surrounding industry to supply blanks and materials, they made their own blanks and sourced their own fibreglass from builders merchants. With Dave’s contacts in California they were able to secure the licenses to produce the likes of Bing, G&S and Weber in the UK and before long were selling boards as fast as they could make them. Perhaps most remarkable in the age of globalisation and corporatisation of the surf world, Tiki is still owned and managed by Tim and Dave. We believe this makes Tiki one of the oldest, original surf company in the world.

Tiki remains the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading homegrown surf company, with sales in countries around the world. We continue to remain close to our roots, designing and developing cold water surf gear. Our team of surfers includes the one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best big wave surfers; Andrew Cotton, originally a local surfer from Croyde, in 2014 towed into possibly the largest wave ever ridden (unconfirmed at time of print), in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. Other team riders include Barry Mottershead - with multi XXL nominations from big wave exploits in Ireland, George Dufty - British champion kitesurfer and Damian Warner - Top 3 UK SUP. Our wetsuits and surfboards are the product of over 50 years in surfing. We are a core team of surfers, designing, testing and using Tiki equipment. What we lack in size and global marketing budgets we make up in innovation, dedicated and a personal motivation to create the best products for ourselves and our fellow surfers.

The Feather Foil is the product of a 5 year R&D project. The construction uses High Density EPS core, Bamboo layers and Carbon rails to create a board with the strength and weight advantages of modern Epoxy construction but the natural feeling of Bamboo and responsive performance of Carbon. Dubbed the Feather Foil due to it’s extraordinary strength to weight ratio, the technology has been implemented in 6 shapes created by world renowned shaper Bruce McKee. “These are no wood laminate wallhangers. The integrated composite layers are the product of a 5 years process testing over 25 different combinations of foams types and densities, lay-up cloths, epoxy resins and utilising the best industry know-how. In our pursuit of the lightest, fastest and strongest surfboard technology, we have blended old school know-how with the latest cutting edge materials. Our CLX, Carbon Lightweight Epoxy range, uses a conventional approach to build the boards: a blank is blown, split and glued up along a stringer. It is then machine shaped, hand finished and laminated by hand; two fibreglass layers on top and a one on the bottom. What sets the CLX range apart is the materials that are used: EPS foam is lighter, less water absorbing and more eco-friendly than conventional Polyurethane foam. The Epoxy resin is stronger than Polyester resin making the boards lighter and stronger. It also has environmental benefits - releasing up to 75% less VOCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the production process. The addition of the Carbon strip makes these boards stronger still - and more importantly, stiffer and more responsive. The combination of a lighter, stiffer board, means the Tiki CLX boards float better, catch more waves, surf quicker and more responsively. Best all, they last longer: good for the environment and good for your wallet!
