EDITORIAL — 2 0 1 6
‘Photography is a true, authentic language but in order to become a photographer you need to master this language: its vocabulary and grammar, obviously, but inevitably its history, as well. I believe that nowadays for a photographic work to be interesting, it is essential that the images tell a story. In fact, each single image should embody a story. So first we need to learn to narrate: through syntax, tone, development and ending. Then we go and look for a story to tell. Actually we’re surrounded by stories but we should learn to recognize them, decipher them, comprehend them, and get deeply involved in them until they belong to us. And we must also learn to respect them.’
The firts CORTONA ON THE MOVE collaboration took place on spring 2015: 23 MultiMediaArt students along with two lecturers from our faculty Till Fuhrmeister (Head of Film/Photo/Creation) and Hermann Seild (Photo Lecturer) headed to Cortona to work for a week on individual and group projects that were then shown during the opening days of CORTONA ON THE MOVE 2015. It was asthonishing to see that our MultiMediaArt philosophy – from concept to artwork – worked out very well. Encouraged by the 2015 experience a step forward was taken in 2016 when a new workshop was organized for a group of MultiMediaArt students with the photographer Paolo Woods, appointed by CORTONA ON THE MOVE organizers Nicola Tiezzi and Antonio Carloni.
The cooperation between CORTONA ON THE MOVE and the MultiMediaArt Degree Program of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences aims at becoming a long term partnership.
The 2nd workshop in Cortona under the guidance of the international successful photographer Paolo Woods, named ‘Telling a story through images’, was designed for photographers who have already mastered the techniques of photography but want to take their work to a higher level and reach out to a wider public. Following is how Paolo Woods introduced the workshop days:
We are willing in fact to move forward jointly and Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is commited to further enhance this fruitfull relation by supporting the ONTHEMOVE Cultural Association efforts for the realization of a visual arts international academy within the walls oft the GIRIFALCO FORTRESS .

The collaboration photoproject vibe collects various impressions, situations and moments of the every days life in the Tuscan city Camucia. The photographers Sandra Hofer and Milan Soremski were spending 6 days in Camucia photographing the unique every days life beside the tourism of Cortona. It's not about creating an illusion of reality rather experience the real life insights and impression of the culture. Therefore Sandra and Milan used a very unique language of photography with the focus on daily situations and architecture.

‘If any secret should sacred be, Though it guarded the life of a family, And any woman be there about, She will die but what she will find out; And though it hurried her soul to well, That secret she must immediately tell.’
The photo series The Witch of Cortona is based on a Tuscan folktale called ‘LA FATTUCHIERA DELLA PORTA ALLA CROCE’. A story about a royal lady that made a wicked pact with a local witch to kill all her relatives in order to get their property. But as the witch put a spell on the woman she was swallowed by the ground and forced to haunt the castle she possessed from now. ‘… Then the hole spread into a great pit, flame rose from it -the edge crumbled away -the guilty woman fell into the fire, and the earth closed over it all, and there was no trace left of her …’
The photographs deal with the visualization of the woman's ghost that is part of the castle. You can find her in the walls, in the dark, cold chambers, as well in the ground she lives. For the aesthetics wet soil was used to soften the model's body as well as giving her appearance a weird look and feel. The grainy black and white stylization make the photographs even rougher so the woman’s body gets more and more absorbed in the setting of the pictures. As location for the shooting The Fortezza Medicea di Girifalco right at the top of the city of Cortona offered several possibilities for abstract posing. Finally the center format as a stylistic device catches the spectator's attention on the very essentials of the picture.

Another View is a conceptual photoprojekt which is projecting the photographers
view and shows the moment of isolation they put themself in. The photographer, is someone who recognize a specific moment which he thinks is worth to capture and freeze in time, that moment can be different for everyone and especially the importance of it. What happens is that everyone stops at what they are doing and suddenly are just standing there, cherishing the moment they find interesting. Thats when they unconsciously step out of the here and now and their focus is somewhere else, they loose track of where they are. It's a moment of isolation from their surroundings and they very often forget in what sort of situation they are and seem a little lost. It´s strange seeing some people randomly standing around, taking a quick shot with their smartphone to capture the moment. The whole concept is to show this isolation the photographer puts himself in, but still draw a conection to his personal moment which he finds worth to photograph. This moment is viewed on a nother picture printed out, which the visitor can take and see what the photographer saw. It is the visitors task to find out what view belongs to what person, by looking at its details and hopefully also appreciating what the photographer saw.

Disstonance: The daily dance with priorities and responsibilities, during
a time of life, which couldn’t be more embossed by decisions. Being torn apart by places you live and love, people who influence you, and wishes or dreams which ultimately, slow themselves down because of their variety. Half-hearted actions or complete numbness and dulling as an result of loss of control. A symptom caused by lack of freedom, triggered by the pursuit of freedom. Disstonance is an neologism, built from the term cognitive dissonance (in psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time) and the term distortion. It’s a try to transfer Richard Sennett's Theories

The professions shown on the pictures are only three of many other typical ones in Cortona. Although there are differences between all these professions they have one thing in common: their small business can't exist without tourism. The city of Cortona is mainly populated by old people. The younger ones go to surrounding cities because of the advanced possibilities in profession reflecting to Cortona. Those in the centre mainly live from tourism. The pictures show the workers and their passion they have for their daily work. Thanks to the tourism as a main source of income the inhabitants of Cortona are able to live their passion in their home city. The photos are focused on the craft in general as well as on the workers hands. These hands already give information of what kind of work they are doing.

What do we mean when we speak about space? In classical architecture photograph is usually not about ‘space’ itself, but about structure and material surrounding spaces. The photographic series Negative Spaces is about this idea. The work tries to map an area which reflects as ‘negative space’ shown between the buildings and the architecture in our cities. This photographic work reflects the aesthetic differences between different cities – on row of pictures showing the town of Cortona, the other row shows the city of Vienna.

The photographical work is conceptually dealing with Richard Sennett's opus ‘Flesh and Stone. The body and the city in western civilisation’. The topic of the book is the relationship between stone, the buildings, streets and the flesh, with the human beings and their needs. Sennett exposes that the history of cities has always also been a history of bodies, and that urban spaces get formed by how the people experience their own body. Cortona with its history-charged, old masonries was especially suitable to locate this photographical sequence Violent stone meets the atemporal, vulnerable human being in flesh and blood. The second approach inspired by Sennett is the exploration of possibilities of touch and distance between men beyond homosexual connotations.

CORTONA ON THE MOVE-fotografia in viaggio was founded in 2011 based
on the inspiration of ONTHEMOVE Cultural Association. The aim is to bring world-class contemporary photography to Cortona, to celebrate great masters of the art and to showcase historical photographic archives. Right from the very first edition of the festival the work of some of the world's top photographers was exhibited in Cortona, immediately attracting the attention of professionals in the field thanks to the festival's pronounced international perspective.
