CONTENTS The aim of this portfolio is to demonstrate my proficiency in architectural design, detailing and presentation. Included are projects which span the past three years of my architectural education and demonstrate my abilities in different artistic mediums.

INTRODUCTION I am a Third Year student in the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT. I find the context driven design process encouraged by the school to be both rewarding and stimulating. The variety of context explored throughout each project has ignited a fascination to examine different styles, materials and cultural influences within my own designs. My aim is to practice a method of design that respects and understands each context in relation to topography, historical influences and the inhabitants. I approach each of these aspects with equal importance. Over the past three years, I have developed an independent method of learning and working that allows me to work as either an individual or as part of a larger team. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TIM O’SULLIVAN 2015 Second Year - Market Space - Galway, Ireland Prior to engaging with the design process, we carried out multiple types of survey and analysis of the various sites allocated to us. This included photographing, measuring, drawing the site and speaking to local residents. We were then required to produce and present detailed drawings and models of each site, along with the information we recorded. Subsequently we were issued a brief calling for a new addition to the Public Space to the forefront of the Church. - Approach The aim was to provide a Structure and Public Space that could be used for a Weekly Market or for Religious Ceremonies. An important aspect of the site that I felt would be paramount in the success of my proposal, was the existing Public Space. I sought to improve the space by expanding the scale and by setting up various zones within the space for different activities. It became clear to me that the new Structure must be capable of accommodating the flow of movement through the space, acting as a Market Hall, but also segregate itself from the Public Space to create a more Private setting for the Religious Ceremonies. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TIM O’SULLIVAN 2015 Third Year - “City within a City” - Turnhout Begijnhof, Belgium The project was preceded by a trip to Belgium, wherein we carried out architectural research through direct and personal engagement with architectural artefacts. The subjects of our visit and investigations were the Begijnhoven of Brussels, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are semi-monastic orders, historically run by nuns known as Begans, that provide services to the surrounding communities. Our research was documented and presented through highly detailed drawings and models. Following this, we were then tasked with inserting a new addition into the Begijnhof. A new piece of both cities. The typology was divided into three components: - Fabric - Object - Garden Our design would be based on the same triad, as well as obvious parallels with the communal, social and spatial aspects of the typology. ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TIM O’SULLIVAN 2015 Third Year The aim was to provide Housing for the Elderly and Retired locals, an Adult Education Centre and both Public and Private Garden spaces for relaxation and for growing different types of vegetation. - Fabric: Housing containing Roof Gardens and Courtyard. - Object: Adult Education Centre. - Garden: Multiple Public and Private Gardens. - Approach A personal learning objective for this project was how to provide privacy for the Elderly Residents alongside the Public aspect of the Education Centre and Garden spaces. It became apparent that the areas utilized for outdoor activities and relaxation would become the focal point for interaction between the Residents and the Public. I aimed to provide another community within the begijnhof while simultaneously paying respect to the fabric and textures of the existing buildings.

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TIM O’SULLIVAN 2015 Third Year - Primary School - Harcourt Terrace, Dublin, Ireland Harcourt Terrace is one of the oldest Protected Structure and Residential Conservation Areas in Dublin, dating back to the esteemed Regency period. Because of this, it was important to carry out multiple types of survey and analysis of the area around the site. This included photographing, measuring, and sketching the site. We were then required to produce and present detailed drawings and models of our site, along with any information we recorded. Subsequently we were issued a brief for the design of a new primary school in place of the derelict Garda Station located on the site. - Approach My aim was to provide an environmentally conscious and practical design that would create a connection between the internal and external environments. The design layout was influenced by both the man made and natural surroundings. Render of approach to the Design

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO TIM O’SULLIVAN 2015 Third Year An important aspect of the design that I felt would be paramount in the success of my proposal, was the ability to utilise natural ventilation, natural sunlight and natural materials. I sought to improve the space by creating a structure that felt at home within the site, keeping with the rhythm of the existing buildings and by having an equal amount of internal and external spaces. By utilising the techniques employed in sustainable design, I aimed to create a healthy internal environment that maintained a connection with the external environment, allowing for growing children to learn an appreciation for the world around us by becoming conscious of the effects we have on the natural environment. I chose to use a brick outer leaf to envelope the structure where it was exposed to the main street facades, in order to instil a sense of coherence with the surrounding elements. The main internal envelope and majority of the structure consists of timber, constructed in the Brettstapel technique.
