Living Landscape introduces a new hybrid housing typology. On the edge of the city a new form of housing creates a smooth transition from urbanization to nature. ■
By shifting the dwellings semi-detached houses are created within a high density. ■
The sculptural roofs of the houses are also the visual boundaries of the private gardens. From the living room it appears that the horizon has lifted, which enlarges the garden. All the roofs are covered with grass to enhance this effect. ■

I n s t a nt Downtown: j u s t add program Multifunctional downtown infill with a sandwiched parking structure Studio Marco Vermeulen
Team Marco Vermeulen Tim Aarsen Pavel Savine Location Fargo, North Dakota, USA Program Offices, retail, public space, housing, parking Status Design 2010, competition entry, unbuilt
In order to vitalize the city center we have chosen a strategy of urban condensation: Instant Downtown. We propose a fully programmed dense urban block which gives Fargo’s downtown an identifiable, mature skyline. â–
In addition, we boost the number of downtown inhabitants, and create a one of kind elevated urban activity park. Separating the shopping plaza and the urban activity deck we find 500 parking spaces on a continuous ramp fully integrated into the block. No more parking on street level, no more ugly street front parking garages. â–
E njoy work! Iconic urban masterplan for a peripheral condensed business park VHP architects+ urbanists + landscape architects
Team Dirk van Peijpe Jacques Vink Tim Aarsen Jens Jorritsma Auzi Triratnamurti Location Moscow, Russia Program Offices, parking, public space Status Approved masterplan 2008
The scheme of the business park is derived from the spatial composition of the Krelim. A wall wraps around the large building blocks and encloses an introverted semi-public space. â–
The largest part of the parking is located outside the wall, surrounding the business complex. In the courtyard only VIP traffic is allowed. â–
B a ck on Track A revitalization strategy for the Hofplein overpass Graduation Thesis Eindhoven University of Technology
Committee Professor Jan Westra Maarten Willems Marco Vermeulen Location Rotterdam, the Netherlands Program Research and design strategy thesis Award Nominated for best graduation thesis 2007 Faculty ADE, TU/e
How do we deal with infrastructural heritage in a high density urban environment? In extracting similarities in all the 9 specific fragments a general strategy is to be developed which can be used as a starting point of developing the site-specific areas of the overpass. Through this way we are able to create a definitive proposal for the re-use of this two kilometer long stretch of urban infrastructural heritage with respect of the past but an eye for the future. â–
A green crossing Design for a fauna passage constructed solely out of logs Studio Marco Vermeulen
Team Marco Vermeulen Tim Aarsen together with Emil Luning Wood Construction Consultancy Location Venlo, the Netherlands Program Fauna bridge Status Preliminary design 2009, unbuilt
The eco passage has to contribute to image of a Cradle to Cradle industrial development. This is one of the reasons for constructing the bridge out of (indigenous) trees, which literally adds to the concept of nature crossing the road. ■
Due to reasons of availability and material strength we have chosen for Larchen (Larix) for the columns and Oregon Pine for the deck. A double row of columns in the middle, two single rows on the sides and two concrete load bearing walls at the ends make up the structural design. ■
By placing the columns on an angle we manage to reduce the expansion at its most critical spot: there were the load of the ground is the largest (one and a half meters of soil). ■

P r of i l e
Tim studied architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology and graduated on the revitalization of the Hofplein Railway overpass in Rotterdam. During the course of his study he was the editor of the Chepos, a quarterly magazine on architecture, urbanism and engineering. He started his career at VHP architects and urbanists where he worked on several large-scale projects in Russia and a selection of competitions and research projects in the Netherlands. For a brief period of three months he worked on the prestigious Eko Atlantic project in Lagos, Nigeria for the engineering firm Royal Haskoning. In 2009 he switched to Studio Marco Vermeulen, a research and design office based in Rotterdam. In the past two years he has worked on a variety of projects, including the masterplanning and concept development of large sustainable industrial areas, the design of an eco passage constructed out of tree logs, a 3D park, an urban infill block and the conceptualization and prototyping of water squares: an innovative concept for storm water retention in dense urban areas. Recently he has attended and tutored at three workshops in Brazil, organized by the NAi, Studio X (Columbia University NY) and the AA School of Architecture. In 2011 Tim moved to the United States to further pursue his career in architecture, urbanism and research.
