AN ORIGAMI FOLDED COFFEE TABLE MADE FROM SHEET ALUMINIUM

Fusing traditional origami shapes and folding techniques with alternative manufacturing and the strength of sheet aluminium, the Teburu coffee table is a rich story of authentic origami design working with modern materials which makes for a truly new take on furniture design. It’s cut from just half a sheet of aluminium and folded into tension by hand to make it rigid and strong. The rope adds further tension and creates a shelf for magazines and books. The process can be completed by the user which makes it as flat packed as you can get. Or the table can be sold fully assembled with a powder coat finish to increase durability.

REDESIGN AND REBRANDING OF REGA’S BEST SELLING AMP

Rega have a rich history in the Hi Fi world and are known for excelling in audio quality but lesser known for their aesthetics. To kick start a new phase of design for Rega they needed to start with their best selling range of electronics. The new design would serve as a foundation for redesigning all the electronics and the branding for every product range. The design borrowed the swoop in previous iconic case designs from Rega and added a subtle level of complexity that would make the case more interesting to look at but not garish. Simple but not boring.

A CONCEPTUAL DISSERTATION THAT TAKES NO PRISONERS

Design and the future go hand in hand, they shape each other as time passes and it is the role of the designer to interpret this for everyone. However designers don’t future scope the purpose of design and avoid thinking critically about its future, instead they choose to remain controlled by utopian visions of perfect designs and strive for futures far from normal. This conceptual dissertation aimed to open up the minds of designers and creative people and prove that there is a future where design could die out entirely. The dissertation includes: a primary research document that scopes the future using forecasting techniques and provides evidence to the dissertation writings. A collection of future artefacts that describes a story of the next 50 years wherein design dies. And ďŹ nally the dissertation writing, printed as book, which critically analyses all of the work and discusses the issues behind this concept.

“Narrow minded approaches to designing for the future and future thinking often mean the bigger picture is missed entirely, as global problems and changes in perceptions start to occur, they can escalate exponentially and become movements that shift whole areas of our lives that we consider normal today. We are potentially at the start of a crisis point for design, if left unchecked, certain factors could spiral out of control and have such a profound effect on design that it could cease to exist in comparison to today. This theory is called the death of design.
