WOODS AND

GORDON

THREE YEARS ago, GK1 client, Craig Gordon was suffering from a debilitating knee injury that was threatening his career at Sunderland was being doubted by men of medicine, such was the difficulty in diagnosing the intricate problem. He’s now in such fine form at Celtic, embracing Europa League football and the Player of the Season award he received from the Scottish Football Writers Association, that his goalie coach Stevie Woods believes he could not just return to his former lofty standards, but surpass them. The turnaround for the Scotland keeper has been huge. If the NO.1 slot is the loneliest in a football team, it is even more desolate when you have spent two years out with a seemingly incurable problem and been left without a club. But, after some ground-breaking treatments, a show of faith at Celtic, a new training ethos and immeasurable amounts of courage and dedication, Gordon is now, once again, very much part of a team and part of something special in Glasgow. “We have a philosophy here where we want players to feel safe and in control and we say it to all of our goalkeepers,” Woods explained. “What we have said to Craig from day one is; do not train for two hours at 70 per cent and expect to improve. Give us 100 per cent for as long as you can, be truthful with the coaches as they will be with you, and if that’s five minute then that’s fine. We will build on that the next day or week or session. That was easy for Craig to adapt to.

project, although the Lazarus-like return came as no surprise to old-hand Woods. “It never surprised me that Craig got back to this level because if you get to know him you know what those two years out of football mean to him and how hungry he is now to play. “He’s a total professional and he believes when you cross the white line all excuses go. He always had the ability to get back to where he was, but we soon decided to re-evaluate that because we then realised we might be able to get him to somewhere even better. Getting him back to the level he was at previously was something he had done before and our goal was to take him to next level.” Woods concedes that Gordon is not the loudest of keepers and it’s a trait he has no interest in trying to force on to the former Heart of Midlothian man. Instead he concentrates on the fact he leads by exemplary example and uses his lowest ebb as motivation to be the best keeper he can be with a hunger unmatched. “He fulfills every criteria required of a top keeper,” Woods said. “He doesn’t have a weakness in his game and you’ll be hard pressed to find a 32 year-old with his desire not to ever miss another match.”

Range Of Passing It is vital the the Goalkeeper has a good range of passing which can be used in different situations. Exercise: The Goalkeeper must look to play the ball out to one of the players. Depending on where the player is located or his run, then goalkeeper must play then ball to him. Players can go in front, behind or to the side of mannequins The goalkeeper must be able to; play the ball into feet / to chest / to head / into the space / into areas to win the ball Progression: Players can change positions to make the decisions making process harder for the goalkeeper Coaching Points: Decision Making - which player to pass to Decision Making - which area to pass the ball to the player Decision Making - What time of pass will be most effective. Passing In Tight Areas The Goalkeeper must be comfortable to play out from the back in tight areas under pressure in a game situation. Exercise: The goalkeeper must look to play the ball out in tight areas to find a spare player. The player then passes the ball back to the Goalkeeper who then looks to pass to another free player. The goalkeeper must move the ball as quickly as he can, finding a new supporting angles after every pass he makes. Progression: Players can move behind a mannequin (so he is no longer an option), so the goalkeeper must find another free player. The player who passes then ball to the Goalkeeper, then puts pressure on the Goalkeeper, who must find the other 2 spare players to pass the ball to. Coaching Points:

Short To Long Combination When a team presses high when dealing with goal kicks, its important to get the 1st pass out and back to the Goalkeeper as quick as possible as he becomes the spare player. The Goalkeeper can then switch play using a driven or lofted pass. Exercise: The Goalkeeper passes the ball out and receives it straight back. The Goalkeeper then looks to switch the ball to the opposite side using a driven or lofted pass. Progression: Once the player passes the ball back to the Goalkeeper, he can put pressure on the Goalkeeper. The receiving player who is deep can change his position. Coaching Points:

Fred Barber The man behind ProSoccer Keeper

When Fred Barber looked at the gloves on offer to goalkeepers today, a worrying trend was apparent. The market was saturated by big brands and prices touching £100. As a goalkeeper with over 400 professional appearances under his belt and coaching experience at both club and international level, it was a situation he believed needed addressing and it led to the birth of his very own gloves for his company ProSoccer Keeper. “It was something I had talked about

“I wanted to produce gloves that

and provide different gloves depending on the conditions.” As with any product there was always going to be a period of testing as the design was finalised. It is here that Barber’s soccer camps and training sessions came in. Barber has been running camps for over a decade, providing amateurs and professionals with expert goalkeeping coaching. For professionals the lure of preseason training has seen Barber’s camps swell in size. One year when he was at Bolton 50 professionals turned up, including England and Denmark internationals Robert Green and Thomas Sorensen.

“I started doing two days at Blackpool and two at Bolton. Eventually the professional coaching began to overtake the soccer camps,” said Barber. “I was doing 80 hours a week and driving 80,000 miles a year. I live in Stoke-on-Trent but I was travelling to Burnley, Shrewsbury, Sunderland, everywhere and then coming back home to run a soccer camp in the evening. I would get up at 7am and walk back in the door at 10.00pm. “I did that for about 10 years until I was working with two clubs, West Brom and Bolton. I was able to bring people through like Tomasz Kuszczak, who went on to play for Manchester United. “Working with goalkeepers I was

Often some brands will look to make one side cheaper, typically the back, but I wanted to make sure both were top of the range. “We have been able to do it at a cheaper cost by sourcing the material ourselves and then sending it to the manufactures. It means we can sell the gloves for £34.99, when big brands are charging people almost £100.” Designing his own pair of gloves had always been an idea of Barber’s and when they finally came to market in WINTER 2015
