I had the pleasure to attend a seminar at the Big 5 Dubai last November where the Dubai Municipality revealed a revised version of its ‘Green Building Codes’, which enforce a number of construction and operational specifications that are meant to make buildings more sustainable and efficient. Following on from that seminar, our sustainability feature takes a closer look at the new mandatory regulations, which came into effect on January 1, 2014. Currently, there are 40 buildings in Dubai that are being developed in line with the new Green Building Codes, with 2 that have already been completed and certified. The rationale for the move was to demonstrate global leadership, enhance Dubai’s competitiveness, improve Dubai’s resilience and livability, improve construction standards, and anticipate regulatory integration.

Given the global nature of the timber trade, it is not uncommon for issues to arise on account of the fact that one species of timber can often have multiple names, while others may have been prescribed names, which actually belong to an entirely different species. As such, we take a look at some examples and ask whether this really matters or not. The conclusion that one can draw is that the naming of timber species for commercial purposes is not that important, as long as both buyer and seller have a mutual understanding. Similarly, perhaps there is no real harm in prescribing alternative names to timber species as a means of bolstering their marketability - provided they are not too far-fetched. Whatever the consensus, what is most important is that the buyer and seller are both fully aware.

Wood factories in Burma to beat 2014 log export ban With a ban on log exports set for this year, foreign buyers of Burmese teak and other rare woods are looking to open timber processing facilities inside Burma. A new law coming into force on April 1, 2014 will prohibit the export of all raw tree logs, but it will not stop firms from processing timber in the country and then exporting it.

According to reports, an Indian company and a Singapore-based business were both given licenses by the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) to build wood-processing factories in the country.

The names of the firms have not yet been announced. In addition, two other Indian firms, Greenply Industries and Century Plyboards, have reportedly been seeking permits to build factories in an industrial zone in Dagon, Rangoon. Century Plyboards plans to invest about USD 10 million in a factory capable of producing 25,000 square meters of plywood a day, according to a newspaper report.

Burmese hardwoods, especially increasingly rare teak, are sought in Western countries and India and China in particular for furniture, house flooring and yacht decking. Teak timber is particularly valued in the boating industry for its durability, especially its resistance to water and rot. As such, it is a lucrative business for Burmese traders.

Located in the Financial District yet conveniently accessible from Chinatown in Toronto’s city centre, Momofuku Toronto is a 6,600 sq. ft., restaurant over three levels that combines Asian influence with New York energy and local Toronto flavors. Designed by the Toronto-based studio, the restaurant interior is housed within the new glass ‘ice cube’ by architect James K.M. Cheng.

Enclosed in a three-storey glass cube, the restaurant aims to offer the ‘great Momofuku experience’, represented through four concepts starting on the ground floor with its Noodle Bar. These are not marketing names, but merely names by which they have come to be known in the local language. A good example of this is wawa from Ghana (Triplochiton scleroxylon), which is also known as obeche in Nigeria, samba in Ivory Coast and ayous in Cameroon.

There are also tree genera, which include numerous important and similar commercial timber species.

he new administrative building for GlaxoSmithKline was opened in 2011 and is

located in the Quebec Metro High Tech Park, opposite the company’s vaccine production facility. Winner of the ‘Innovation in Architecture’ award at the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s annual Awards of Excellence, the project was designed

by Coarchitecture. The new building, in addition to offering an innovative and contemporary office space, is also notable for its sustainable practices.

The green elements of the building include an FSC-certified timber frame, geothermal heating and cooling, and a south-facing atrium with a doubleskinned facade.

Along the facade, the columns are inclined at 45 degrees and supported in an ‘A’ shape, while in the upper section they form a large ‘X, which is clearly visible from the outside through the glass wall.
