After four years in their rural Somerset home, the Cunningham family decided the time was right to look at changing their windows and doors, “we had planned to replace them sooner, but other priorities had prevented us from doing so” Mrs Cunningham explains.
“The windows we inherited were dark brown plastic that just didn’t suit the house, and overall the appearance needed softening up.”
The family were quite clear in their minds about what they wanted to do but still benefited from the expertise given to them at their local Timber Windows showroom, “we received really helpful advice on how to configure the windows for best

n this Hertfordshire farmhouse, the original wooden sash windows dating to 1863 had stood the test of time for some 125 years until being replaced with plastic alternatives in the 1990s; these however lasted only a little over 20 years before they began to fail and the current owners, thankfully decided to return their home’s appearance to its former glory.
“We definitely wanted timber sash windows put back in; this is how the house was supposed to be!” Mrs Parker exclaims.
“Having travelled around the country a lot in the past few years, we’d seen a lot of houses of all sizes and styles but one thing we noticed was common to all of them was how the windows could make or break their appearance.”
The homeowners were convinced by what they saw at the showroom, “we compared quotes and product offering with another company but we liked what we saw from Timber Windows, particularly superior were the bars and the finer details.”

Everyone comments on the improvements to the appearance of the house..! Simple yet elegant traditional sash windows with 18mm Georgian bars in a white painted finish adorn the Parker’s home now, with a combination of forms chosen; some using the cords and weights mechanism while others use our hidden spring system. New glazed French doors were also added to the sitting room.
“We didn’t feel it appropriate to carry the full Georgian bars design through to the French doors so we were able to have a bar design manufactured that we had drawn up ourselves.”
Mrs Parker, and her visitors are suitably pleased with the outcome, “We’d never lived in a home that was draught free…until now! The windows have made the rooms much lighter and they have nice details such as the cords and weights which add a nice touch of character. Everyone comments on the improvements to the appearance of the house.”
“We have further plans for the house in the future, and will be back to Timber Windows when we carry out renovations and extensions on other parts of it.”

Having moved from London to Harrogate 8 years ago, Mr & Mrs Bell took on their detached, 1905 built home carrying out huge modernisation works to make it suitable for modern family living, having previously had long term elderly owners.
“We’ve renovated and remodelled on a grand scale here, and as we’ve tackled each area of the house, we’ve had Timber Windows in to replace the appropriate windows and doors in conjunction with this; so far we’ve done four separate phases since 2009” Mr Bell explains.
“The original windows were cold and leaky, and as it’s quite a cold house in general this wasn’t helping; we really wanted to find a company that could provide us with good quality timber windows backed by good guarantees, and that brought us to Timber Windows via an online search.”
Being sensitive to the character and style of the house has been at the forefront of their minds, “our aim has been not to stray too far away from the style and design of the original windows, so where possible we’ve got the same configuration.”
Traditional White flush casement windows with chrome ironmongery and 27mm astragal glazing bars are fitted throughout.
“We have mixed it up and been more daring with the front door; the style of the door is quite traditional but we opted for a contemporary colour and numbering style paired with the smart Samuel Heath hardware.” The design is a Frenchay door in Urbane Grey with Chrome Ring door knocker, letter plate and Profile door knob along with sandblasted effect glass and etched house number.
Traditional flush casement windows finished in White with 27mm astragal glazing bars and chrome ironmongery.
“We’ve had no problems at all with the installations or the products over all the phases during the past 6 years, and that’s why we keep returning for further work. In conjunction with the other changes in the house, such as a new boiler, the new windows have made a noticeable difference to the warmth; also the sound levels from outside are greatly reduced too.”

Set in 600 acres of farm land in the West Yorkshire countryside, Mr Laybourn’s perfectly formed home has had a rich and varied history. The building’s origins are as an orangery to a manor house that once stood nearby, providing a bright environment to cultivate produce for use on the estate. Much later, the structure was used as a chicken shed with the openings being bricked up and later fell into a state of disrepair.

THE DAY THE WINDOWS WENT IN WAS THE BEST DAY OF THE WHOLE PROJECT AS IT SIGNALLED THE TRANSITION FROM A HOLLOW BARN TO MY FUTURE HOME. Before
“As the structure is a listed building, I had extremely strict hurdles to overcome and eventually managed to convince the council that the building was better preserved being used as a residence than falling apart. Olly from Timber Windows at Harewood played a big role in the process of gaining permissions by demonstrating the authenticity of the products I wanted to use, Mr Laybourn explains.
The new sash windows had to match the style and formation of the glazing bars from the original windows, the frames of which were still present once the openings were revealed.

The perfect match
The façade of the building is dominated by the towering windows and door, the sashes standing at almost three metres high, and their appearance playing arguably the most important part of the overall look. Mr Laybourn explains his delight at their arrival during the lengthy project, “the day the windows went in was the best day of the whole project as it signalled the transition from a hollow barn to my future home.”
Finished in a soft shade of Cream, the door and windows also have 18mm astragal bars with the sashes hung on attractive brass chains and weights and are all manufactured in engineered European redwood.
“We were amazed at how good they were. The products have been in place for over two years now, and haven’t weathered at all.”

Glorious VICTORIAN
St Pancras railway station opened in 1868
30 www.timberwindows.com
W
hen Queen Victoria was crowned in 1837, the French Revolution
was still a relatively recent memory.
With rapid population growth and migration to the towns, social unrest was also starting to grow in Great Britain.
Decent housing was one way for the ruling classes to keep control of the masses. New techniques of mass production enabled the quality of the building materials and homes themselves to improve considerably.
For the Victorian middle and upper classes, the home was seen as a reflection of status. Just as today, homeowners pored over the new magazines and visited the many exhibitions.
Architectural fashion moved quickly. The Victorian’s imitated and revived many styles including Classical Greek, Gothic, Elizabethan, Rococo and Scottish Baronial, plundering the past for inspiration.
Plate glass arrived in 1832, enabling sliding sashes to feature just six, and later, four-paned windows with a single glazing bar down the middle. Three sided bay windows also became increasingly popular.
Partly due to the Gothic Revival, mosaic stained glass, rather than painted glass, started to feature in doors and also at the top of windows.
However mass production resulted in buildings that were too perfect, with craftsmen no longer involved. Hence the growth of the more humanistic Arts & Craft’s Movement, with its emphasis on hand-crafted techniques.
Today, that connection to the craftsman, and authentic materials, is perhaps more important than ever.

his estate of single storey 1980s built homes were all given an unusual
feature entrance, and some thirty years on, the current owners, Mr & Mrs Webster were keen to retain the look whilst giving their home a fresh face.
“All of the homes around here have a contemporary entrance style, so we needed to match in with this but give a fresh take on the design to replace the dark hardwood door that had been here from the start.”
Having discovered Timber Windows online, the Webster’s paid a visit to their local showroom, “the showroom was fantastic and really demonstrated to us that the product quality was very good.”
“We decided we’d like to continue living here for some time to come and would therefore invest in various improvements, including changing the door.”
This design is a bespoke interpretation of an Apsley glazed door and multiple sidelights, with sandblasted panels, stainless steel hardware, an etched house number and a 36mm modern glazing bar formation, with a dual colour finish; Flatiron Grey externally and White internally.
“We were really pleased to find a company that could accurately recreate this rather unusual style of door for us, and the installation was carried out fantastically well; it’s given the house a real facelift” Mrs Webster concludes.

It’s ALL sustainable, so doesn’t harm the
EARTH! We offer a range of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified timbers for your windows and doors, including Meranti Hardwood and European Oak. However over 80% of Timber Windows customers choose European Redwood – our favoured alternative. The longevity of this strong, knot free, stable timber is well proven in the United Kingdom. European Redwood is the timber used by the British joiners of yester year – most 100 year old British joiner y was originally made using European Redwood. All of our Redwood derives from sustainability managed plantations in Northern Europe, which means that when trees are felled, new ones are always planted to replace those har vested. In fact European forest areas are now expanding by around 5000 sq. km each year. These forests are also healthier for the environment, removing Co2 from the atmosphere and storing it in their trunks. So when you choose your new Timber Windows you can be sure that you will not harm the Earth.

uilt from scratch to their own specification in the 1990’s, the Price’s home is tucked
away in a village setting in Cambridgeshire.
The original windows chosen at the time of the build were solid wood that had started to move and had gaps opening up. This was before the advent of the technology employed in today’s timber windows using engineered timber to prevent such problems occurring. The homeowners had also come to realise that other areas such as glazing had seen improvements in the twenty or so years that had passed. “We live in a conservation area; the rules state that we had to match the appearance that the house was granted permission for originally. We were told by the council that we could have uPVC if we wanted but when we investigated them, the timber lookalikes were just as expensive and their faux grain looked inauthentic, so we felt we’d much rather have the real thing” Mr Price explains. “Whilst carrying out research online, we came across Timber Windows, and once we’d visited the showroom, nothing else we saw could match the quality. We particularly liked the slim box depth available on the sash windows as this suited the openings of the property.” The expertise on offer at the showroom proved to be a helpful addition too, “We were presented with good ideas for designs and window types; for example where it turned out to be impractical to have sash windows due to the narrow opening, the idea was put forward to have the styling matched with casement windows; we liked the fact that there was a range to cover all our needs and that everything was being made specifically to our order. There was never any hard sell, and no silly sales tactics like some others we came across.” A large number of sash windows with slim box depth, using both cords and weights and the hidden spring mechanism were chosen, along with French doors and some casement windows, all manufactured in Engineered European Redwood, in a White painted finish and with brass ironmongery. Commenting on the installation process, Mr and Mrs Price add, “they did a really good job. Everything arrived on time and went very smoothly. Even a slight issue that occurred after the installation was complete was attended to promptly with a return visit; no quibbles just great service.” “Since we moved here the road that passes by the front of the house has seen an increase in traffic flow, so the road noise had blighted us, however the new windows have made a really noticeable difference to our comfort.”

r & Mrs Setford first purchased a new front door and sun room windows for their
Suffolk home from Timber Windows in 2010. “We lived with those items for a few years and were very
happy with both the products and the service we’d received, we were therefore satisfied to return for the rest of the house” Mr Setford explains.
The Setford’s home has a contemporary approach to its design having been built in the late 1990’s and due to its location within the old boundary wall of Bury St Edmunds, comes with special restrictions – for example, the change in configuration of the sun room glazing had to go through planning officers. “We’d had uPVC windows and doors in a property before we lived here, and never liked them; it was therefore natural for us to have timber.”
“From the quotation, through the specification, the liaison and the surveying, everything was first rate. Our contact at your showroom even consulted directly with the planning officers to agree the changes we wanted to make.”
All the windows and doors were manufactured in Engineered European Redwood, with the majority of them being in the Contemporary Cottage styles, meaning more angular edges and more glazing. They all feature contemporary stainless steel ironmongery and are dual coloured with Dorset Cream on the outside and White on the inside.
Mr & Mrs Setford have been pleased with all stages of the process, “we were kept well informed of progress throughout and the installation was both carefully and efficiently carried out; we could tell that the

So began the exciting process of choosing and designing the new sash windows, “originally we’d planned to replace the essentials but we decided to go the whole way and make replacements all round, whilst we will return to replace a set of French doors, a back door and fixed arched windows at a later date” Mrs Knowles describes.

TIMBER WINDOWS? 1

All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.
All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value.This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.
Factory applied micro-porous coatings providing maximum protection but minimal maintenance
Glazing units almost twice as effective as ordinary double glazing

7
Glass is fitted from room side to prohibit would-be intruders from gaining entry by removing the glass.
Advanced glass technology not only provides enhanced thermal performance but also much improved clarity, particularly compared to traditional hard coated low e glasses. High light transmittance (77%) maximises the entry of natural light into the home.
Internal beads for security
3
Exceptional optical clarity
Neat, coloured silicone seals
Purpose-made grooves on the inside and outside of the window receive the silicone necessary to protect against water ingress. Appropriate coloured or clear silicone is factory applied, guaranteeing a perfect, unobtrusive seal.
4
Rebated glazing beads eliminate unsightly gaps between the frame and bead In standard timber systems, paint is prone to cracking at the point where the bead meets the window frame. By rebating the glazing bead over the sash we conceal the joint, which eliminates the problem.
5
8
Warm edge spacer bars
Low conductivity spacer bars help to minimise heat loss and combat condensation levels on the inner pane.
9
Ventilation channels help prevent double-glazing from misting Ventilation channels protect against the failure of double glazed units. In standard systems misting can occur when glazing units are allowed to sit in water trapped within the frame.
Multi-layer timber sections with opposing grains, balances warping and combats twisting
10
The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.
All Timber Windows are fitted with advanced security locks that wrap around the openers on our Flush Casements and engage bolts in multiple points on our Lipped Casements. Doors are fitted with multi-point locking mechanisms, featuring hook-bolts and deadlock.

Having seen local advertising for Timber Windows at Harewood we took a trip to see them, and were immediately impressed by the product quality.” The Marsden’s cottage required sash windows in various sizes and styles, so the couple were instantly drawn to the sashes on display in the showroom, “we were impressed with how the sash windows worked and could recognise the improvements in the quality of the double glazing compared to our existing ones.” All of their expectations were met during the visit both in terms of service and product availability, “we also wanted a glazed door for the back laundry room, a front door of a similar style to the existing one, slim French doors, along with casement windows for the upstairs rear – whatever our specification, a solution was available.” All the items chosen were colour matched to a Farrow & Ball shade, named “Ringwold Ground” with the front and back door manufactured in engineered Meranti hardwood whilst all other items were selected in engineered European redwood. Inside, rooms took on an amazing lightness and air of tranquillity that we just hadn’t anticipated, and the double glazing is really proving its worth through the winter as the house is clearly warmer.” “This project was not the cheapest thing we have done in the house, but we think it was worth every penny and we love our home even more now, which is really saying something!”
