“We’ve always hated the uPVC windows our home had been given. The frames of the old windows started to fall apart, so we decided to take the leap and get them changed, plus we’d always wanted timber to match the age and character of the property” Mrs Chapman explains.

“Another homeowner in the village had some lovely looking windows fitted; I knocked on their door to ask who did them and once we had the recommendation for Timber Windows, we visited our local showroom.”

“We’re so relieved to come home to windows which match the property” Mrs Chapman explains.

“We’re so relieved to come home to windows which match the property after all these years; we didn’t want over the top feature windows, just a simplistic look and one that was in keeping….matching and blending in was important.”

“We chose a design that had less bars than before, and we’ve noticed we get a lot more light in now – plus we’ve started to enjoy the views out of the windows again!”

The majority of the windows chosen were cottage flush casements in a dual colour finish with ‘French Grey’ externally and a close match of Little Greene’s ‘White Lead 74’ internally; French doors also have the same painted finishes.

Commenting on the installation process, Mrs Chapman describes, “the fitting ran smoothly and professionally, and the guys worked very hard with all different shapes and sizes of windows and doors – everything was finished off really well, and we didn’t need to redecorate either.”

REPLICATION R

estoring their home in a Sussex seaside town to its former glory was the

main aim for Mr & Mrs Smethurst. Whilst giving it a much-needed update was important, there was no need to reinvent its appearance so it was also critical to replicate and retain the original look.

“We’d lived in this house for 12 years with beautiful, but very draughty and cold sash windows.”

“It was essential for us to replicate the style and the design.”

Sash windows were specified all round, including Venetian sash windows to the upper rooms; these are a style common to many period properties featuring fixed outer sashes and a sliding centre. Decorative horns, 18mm astragal bars and a White painted finish were also chosen.

The front door is a Frenchay design finished in French Grey externally, and White internally. It also features chrome ironmongery including a Samuel Heath letter plate. The glass design is a bespoke recreation of the original design from their previous front door.

“We spent a long time trying to find a suitable replacement front door, and we’re happy that we’ve now found one that does the house justice along with the windows.”

In the town of Burton-on-Trent, Mr & Mrs Murphy’s impressive and striking detached home sits within a conservation area.

“The windows and doors that were in the house were original, single glazed and needed a lot of maintenance. The heat loss from draughts was extensive.”

It’s conservation status meant that there were criteria to comply with, “the quality and finish of the windows was important, hence we looked for a reputable company.”

eautiful, real timber sash windows manufactured using a

combination of traditional, time proven methods and modern engineering skill, can truly enhance the value and beauty of a home.

The ageing, original sash windows in Mr Knight’s Essex home were beyond saving, although the period front door has stood the test of time and is still serving the house well, in both its appearance and performance.

Sash windows matched to the style and proportion of their predecessors, and that of the house were the only suitable solution, including triple Venetian designs and impressive, grand bays.

Engineered Meranti hardwood sashes were chosen, in a White painted finish. Additionally, a range of authentic options such as D-handles, decorative horns and smooth gliding mechanisms that are hung on traditional cords and weights were also specified, along with 18mm astragal bars that differ in design between the upper and lower sashes.

All these things are a replication of the originals; preserving their style while giving the homeowners all the modern benefits of double glazing and multi-layer engineered timber.

Put simply, nothing can match the look & feel of authentic timber sash windows! 32 www.timberwindows.com

“We lived through four cold winters in our Leeds house with the old windows before we changed them, so the difference was massive and although we didn’t live here long before making the change, we knew it needed doing and was essential.” French doors and stable door in London Grey. Sash windows and flush casements all finished in ‘Off-White’ with decorative horns.

The large rooms with high ceilings meant it was vital to the homeowners to be able to retain heat whilst also getting good levels of daylight.

“From a heat insulation and security perspective it was important to get the majority of the windows and doors changed – the old front door didn’t even have a key and the French doors were impracticably tall without toplights, had big gaps and barely opened.”

“All the windows were uPVC and full of condensation; they were inappropriate for the style of the property.”

“Along with all the major internal and external renovation works, we decided to replace all the windows with traditional, double glazed timber framed windows.”

The family’s choice were Cottage flush casement windows, French doors and a glazed single entrance door finished in ‘Straw’ with 18mm astragal glazing bars.

“After much research, it was obvious that Timber Windows provided the perfect solution and without doubt were the best quality on the market.”

“We were impressed by the paint finish and the guarantees, and were prepared to pay the price for top quality. We were also very impressed with the fitting, showroom team and after-sales service. We would not hesitate in recommending Timber Windows.”

being developed into a two bedroom holiday cottage.

Mr Venn describes the origins of his home, “the house and grounds were part of a country estate; our house was one of the cottages tied to the estate and sold off about ten years ago.”

“The planning restrictions on the stable building meant it had to be preserved. It would probably have been financially a lot less expensive to knock it down but we were happy to be custodians of it, and have done essential works such as underpinning and replacing the roof.”

In their main house, the Venn’s had previously had a poor experience with windows fitted 10 years ago when they first moved in, “unfortunately we realise now that those we chose were lesser quality in solid wood that have not stood the test of time,” this is in contrast to the Timber Windows product that is engineered, multi-layer timber for strength and durability, “so we have been gradually replacing the windows in the house with new ones from Timber Windows too.”

“The existing openings had to be retained, meaning where the original stable door was another stable door had to go in its place,” this has made for an extremely oversized door but a stunning feature.

“The guarantees offered on the products were an important consideration for us. Overall we’re very pleased with them so far and particularly love the stable door.”

The stable door is manufactured in Meranti hardwood at 2.2 metres high and 1.2 metres wide with a ‘Light Oak’ stain finish and antique black ironmongery.

“We also love the feature window, which also started out as a door but we were given permission to make this a window instead.”

Elsewhere the flush casement windows are finished in ‘White’ with Monkeytail ironmongery in various sizes and proportions to suit the original openings of the building.

much needed change has been made to Mr & Mrs Bellamy’s Sheffield

home replacing old and now illegal specification windows.

“Our old windows were resulting in a loss of heat from each room and therefore higher than necessary energy bills” Mrs Bellamy explains.

The double glazed units used in Timber Windows products are almost twice as effective as ordinary glazing. This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double glazing.

“We chose Timber Windows from looking at various options online and once we met Bev and Chris in the Sheffield showroom, we knew this was the right choice.”

At over two metres high, all the Deco casement and sash windows make a large statement within the building’s façade, and are finished in Off-White with 18mm astragal bars.

“We are all delighted with the result” Mrs Bellamy Slim box sash windows in Off-White with 18mm astragal bars.

Factory applied micro-porous coatings providing maximum protection but minimal maintenance

Glazing units almost twice as effective as ordinary double glazing

All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.

All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value. This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.

Glass is fitted from room side to prohibit would-be intruders from gaining entry by removing the glass.

Exceptional optical clarity

Internal beads for security

Neat, coloured silicone seals

Purpose-made grooves on the inside and outside of the window receive the silicone necessary to protect against water ingress. Appropriate coloured or clear silicone is factory applied, guaranteeing a perfect, unobtrusive seal.

4

Advanced glass technology not only provides enhanced thermal performance but also much improved clarity, particularly compared to traditional hard coated low e glasses. High light transmittance (77%) maximises the entry of natural light into the home.

8

Warm edge spacer bars

Low conductivity spacer bars help to minimise heat loss and combat condensation levels on the inner pane.

9

Ventilation channels help prevent double-glazing from misting

Rebated glazing beads eliminate unsightly gaps between the frame and bead

Ventilation channels protect against the failure of double glazed units. In standard systems misting can occur when glazing units are allowed to sit in water trapped within the frame.

In standard timber systems, paint is prone to cracking at the point where the bead meets the window frame. By rebating the glazing bead over the sash we conceal the joint, which eliminates the problem.

The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.

All Timber Windows are fitted with advanced security locks that wrap around the openers on our Flush Casements and engage bolts in multiple points on our Lipped Casements. Doors are fitted with multi-point locking mechanisms, featuring hook-bolts and deadlock.

“As it’s a cottage we wanted to

Having moved into their Suffolk seaside village property 3 years ago, the Bailey’s set out to improve their new home.

Mrs Bailey explains “the original windows here were similar but had been in place for a long time, and were rotting.”

“As it’s a cottage we wanted to ensure the changes we made were in keeping with its character, and definitely didn’t want uPVC.”

French Grey flush casement windows were chosen throughout. Single entrance doors include a traditional Bevington and a contemporary Miniver which were selected in French Grey, along with a Staverton in Off-White as an internal porch door.

Traditional French doors also finished in French Grey externally allow the owners to look out to their immaculately kept rear garden from the lounge.

“The products are very good quality and have proved to be very beneficial for improved insulation.”

RESTORATION

Before

A

bout 15 years ago I visited some friends in Leeds – they had just

moved into a three storey terraced house within walking distance of Headingley cricket ground. The area was deeply unpopular in those days, but they could see the potential in both the house and the area.

Careful research had unearthed original images of the property – giving them vital information on the design of the original front door and sash windows. Once the horrible plastic versions were replaced, the true appearance of the house was revealed – and after a year or so of hard work they made a tidy but modest profit on their now beautiful home.

Like Headingley, many towns and cities in the UK can readily point to a ‘conservation area’ – one where individual streets and sometimes just small areas are restored to their former glories. And with soaring property prices, the incentive to improve rather than move, becomes that much stronger.

Today many people visiting our showrooms are looking to replicate the look and feel of the original doors and windows – but with the benefits of modern timber performance and insulation, combined with high levels of security. The expanding network of Timber Windows showrooms can provide professional advice and knowledge - they will be familiar with the history of the area and the designs that will work best for your home.

COUNTRY CALM

Calm

COUNTRY In the Sussex countryside, Mr & Mrs Roberts reside in their charming timber home.

Being an exposed location, they’d started to feel the effects of the outside through their original wooden frames, “the prevailing winds across the nearby hills made the house quite chilly” Mrs Roberts comments.

Their new windows have meant the character has been retained using a stained finish; a nod to the structure of the building while giving a fresh appearance.

Mr & Mrs Roberts chose elegant flush casement windows crafted in Engineered European Oak and finished in a Light Oak stain, while antique style monkeytail handles and pegstays complement their interior choices.

Describing the difference their new windows have made to the house, Mrs Roberts says, “it’s now a lot quieter, feels much more solid and far less cold now.”

SO IF I’M HAPPY THEY MUST BE GOOD! With a career and his own business in the bespoke construction and installation of kitchens and bathrooms, Mr Lambert, by his own admission, is fussy and meticulous in his own work and what he expects from those doing work for him, “I’m very used to working in other people’s homes, so understand what is expected” he comments.

Having moved into his home in a Hertfordshire village just a few months earlier, he recognised that the windows and doors were in desperate need of change, “after 35 years in our previous house, we wanted a renovation project to make a property our own; changing the windows and doors was one of the first things we did, especially as the old, dark mahogany windows gave a dark appearance and gloomy feel to the rooms.”

“Once we’d visited the showroom in St Albans, we could tell instantly that these were the windows we wanted. We were made to feel very welcome and connected very quickly with the team at the showroom.”

Mr Lambert chose Cottage flush casement windows in French Grey with a 27mm astragal glazing bar along with an oak Staverton entrance door and sidelight, finished in Light Oak stain.

“We’re in a conservation area here, so were required to have wooden windows. We’re really very pleased with them, they are quality products and it’s made a big difference to the look of the house.”

Mr & Mrs Wilsmore’s home in Leeds was in need of an uplift, with the main focus being the windows and doors on their prominent detached house sitting on a corner plot.

Box sash windows finished in ‘Off-White’.

The before and after photos, especially in relation to the two entrance doors, show what a transformation the house has undergone. “The side door was previously all glass, and whilst it wasn’t the original, it did have a character that we wanted to echo while bringing it up to date – it’s width meant that it needed to make a statement and being in the more noticeable position on the house the new door has become a grand centre piece” Mrs Wilsmore explains. The custom side entrance door is based on our Bardwell design with toplight finished in ‘Harewood Grey’ with an ‘Off-White’ frame, 27mm astragal bars and brass ironmongery. The front door is a Chalfont design with toplight, painted in ‘Harewood Grey’ with a frame matched to Farrow & Ball’s ‘Old White’ and chrome ironmongery. Box sash windows hung on traditional chains and weights are finished in ‘Off-White’. Commenting on the process and the overall result, Mrs Wilsmore says, “the conduct of all involved was very professional from start to finish; a very good job has been done and all was finished well.” “We’ve had lots of positive comments from neighbours – we’re really very pleased with everything, they’re lovely.”

S H OWSTOPPER!

Showstopper! “Our old windows were white wood, rotten, single glazed and let in horrific draughts” Mrs Pocock exclaims of the thing that blighted their home’s look and feel the most.

“This was our top priority when we moved in here a year or so ago – we’re so pleased with them now, it’s made our house feel like a real showstopper!”

Cottage flush casements, entrance doors and a stable door were fitted, all in French Grey with 18mm astragal bars and antique black ironmongery.

them, everyone appreciates the difference and they’ve totally transformed the house.

“We love the French Grey finish; we were very set on that from the outset as it fits nicely with the cottage style.”

“Replacing the regular kitchen door with a stable door was one of our favourite things; we love it, and it’s a nice feature to get light and air inside without having the door wide open.”

Those living nearby noticed the difference too, as Mrs Pocock comments, “a neighbour saw them being installed and is also having theirs changed by Timber Windows now.”

riginally the home of Mr Burford’s grandparents, this beautiful

bungalow on the edge of the Forest of Dean in Herefordshire has been passed through the family.

“Last renovated in the 1980s, we wanted to extend it and remodel it to suit our way of living now – this has been an ongoing project for over 2 years now.”

Mr Burford opted for a contemporary style choosing a London Grey painted finish throughout, with contemporary flush casement windows, Bi-Fold doors, a Dowr design front door and Elwyn design rear door, all with various Stainless Steel ironmongery options.

During Renovation Elwyn design contemporary entrance door in London Grey.

Mr Burford describes why he made these choices for his home, “we were impressed with the quality of the windows and doors, and always wanted timber. There was a great range to choose from, and we could match the Bi-Fold doors with all the other windows and doors, which is difficult to do. We had unlimited choice of colour and the brilliant option to design bespoke back and front doors.”

“Overall, we are really satisfied with the end product, and have had numerous neighbours and passers-by enquire about where we bought them, so I think we’ve been a great advert for Timber Windows in Herefordshire!”

A CO LO U RFUL CHOICE

A COLOURFUL CHOICE Traditional smart white, elegant black or something less obvious and more individual – what will your choice of colour be for your windows?

Take for example, the owners of this beautiful town house in the Midlands, choosing a shade that blends green and grey, known as Tent Grey. This is a colour that manages to stand out and blend in at the same time.

It may be a sign of the times, but just 40% of our orders are for white windows, and with hundreds of different colours shades to choose from, it’s easy to be tempted by other options.

The journey starts in our showrooms, where you can view a great selection of products in our most popular colour choices. If these don’t satisfy your colour craving, then painted timber swatches and colour charts are available to view too.

And just when you thought there couldn’t be any more options to consider, we also offer a close matching service to the colour palettes of well known brands such as Farrow & Ball, Fired Earth and Little Greene.

Finally, don’t forget the classic stain finishes and the ability to put one shade or stain on the outside of your windows, and a different option on the inside.

You really are spoilt for choice!

YOU REALLY ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE....!
