Having now lived with the new windows for a couple of years I have really come to appreciate how draught free they are
O
n the leafy streets of North London sits this charming
semi-detached Edwardian property, home to Mr & Mrs Perks. Having moved in just over two years ago, the couple knew they were taking on a sizeable project with the whole house requiring an overhaul, in particular the windows needed pretty immediate attention, “our original Edwardian windows had layers of old varnish and paint which had effectively sealed them shut. The original windows also let in a lot of draught and traffic noise, so we decided to replace them completely to maximise our comfort” explains Mrs Perks.
Design and aesthetics in keeping with the area the house is situated in was an important consideration, “it was necessary to keep the integrity of the Edwardian style, and as we are semi-detached it was important not to look too dissimilar to our conjoined neighbours, and indeed the rest of the street.”
Their local showroom is Timber Windows of Hampstead & Highgate, and as described by Mrs Perks, they received a very high level of service there, “Our former flat was just round the corner from the showroom, so when we knew we were moving, we dropped in and were very impressed by the quality of the materials and the helpful advice given.” All flush casement windows manufactured in Engineered European Redwood and finished in White with 18mm Ovolo astragal bars and black period ironmongery.

The couple took away a brochure and continued their research until their new home was ready for the change, “learning more about the products from the brochure, I liked the idea of a product that could offer security, a durable finish, noise reduction and heat retention without having to go down the uPVC route, which we knew would compromise the aesthetic of the property.”
Mr & Mrs Perks opted for clean, white, traditional flush casement windows manufactured in engineered European Redwood, fitted with contrasting black period ironmongery and monkey tail handles, “we chose a style that would emphasise the high ceilings of the property, and as we had found the living areas to be rather dark previously we also wanted to let in as much light as possible.”
The excellent service continued throughout the process too, “the team that installed the windows were a joy; hardworking and professional, yet fun to have around, so they made the whole experience more relaxed. I was also delighted that they were able to create a decorative architrave that was in-keeping with the Edwardian style, so the property could retain its period feature.”
The homeowners are ultimately delighted with this stage in their renovation, “replacing the windows is probably the biggest renovation project we have undertaken since we moved in, yet it remains the most ‘trouble-free’ project so far. I am very pleased with the product generally, but more specifically, having now lived with the new windows for a couple of years, I have really come to appreciate how draught free they are, especially when compared to other wooden windows in the house that had been put in place by the previous owners.”
“The neighbours have
all been very positive too, which is a relief, as when you live in a row of period houses I believe it is important to consider the aesthetics of the street too. Overall, what we have gained is a more contemporary, stripped down version of the existing windows.”

Returning an Essex cottage to its former glory
W
ith exposed beams, idyllic views across green pastures and a location close to the sea, this period cottage in the north Essex countryside now has new timber sash and flush casement windows. The owners of this country home, Mr and Mrs Feint set out to restore the cottage in 2013 by replacing sash windows to the front of the main house along with flush casements to a more recent extension, finished in French Grey. “We love the new windows, and the colour gives the property a lighter look compared to the dark stain finish in place previously” explains Mrs Feint. A Google search led them to the Timber Windows website in the initial stages followed by a visit to the Timber Windows of Fornham showroom; then a home visit by representative, John Lay. John says “the owners knew what they wanted to achieve with the look of their home” Mrs Feint adds, “we’ve been delighted with the service we’ve received from John and the installation team, so much so we continued work with replacement windows on the back of the house too” Having had white uPVC stormproof windows installed on the rear of the house by a previous owner, the current owners knew this simply wasn’t in keeping with the character of the building, and had always aimed to return the cottage to its former glory by putting timber back in again, with French Grey flush casements. Describing their past and present experience, Mrs Feint adds, “Our old sashes were draughty and leaking, and they’d stick, which was maddening. The new ones are superb and look great.” The homeowners considered only one other route for their replacement windows prior to the initial work with Timber Windows of Fornham, this being a local joiner/carpenter but were dissatisfied with their ability to both supply a quality product and install competently too. Meeting the team and seeing the products first hand helped enormously as Mrs Feint describes, “when we went to your showroom and saw the product, it made up our minds pretty quickly.”

very centre of Samuel Heath & Sons; the same today as when the business first started out nearly 200 years ago, in 1820. As manufacturers of bathroom accessories, taps, showers and architectural hardware, the meticulous attention to detail and process are unrivalled. For Timber Windows, these qualities match with our own approach and make Samuel Heath a preferred partner with a beautiful range of door furniture, window handles and peg stays available to further enhance your joinery choices.
Each and every product is made from solid brass, unlike many alternative offerings which will be hollow cast or use lower grade metal. This brass is Northern European and sourced from a brass foundry just 8 miles away from their factory. But what is it that makes Samuel Heath worthy of such acclaim? IN A C ONSERVATION AREA THE DETAIL WAS AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION his 1902 detached house stands proud in the sought-after Long Ditton, Surrey close to the River Thames, Hampton Court Palace and Sandown Park racecourse.
The homeowner selected the Deco casement window by Timber Windows for the substantial and challenging makeover of their home. The Deco provides faithful detailing which replicates the property’s original timber windows.
The Deco style features specially designed sections added to the front face of the window which allow the opening sashes to appear recessed within the frame. This important detail is common to properties of this period and was employed to provide a degree of modelling to the façade of urban homes.
Homeowner and part time project manager, Julie Voysey, says “it was equally important to us that we retained the aesthetic quality in every detail. The windows are large and if the detailing is wrong it could have had a disastrous impact.”

Deco perfection
The benefit of high performance double glazing has added a new dimension to the family home overcoming heat loss in times of rising energy costs, eliminating troublesome and unattractive condensation, and the need for unsightly secondary glazing. Situated on a residential road and in partial view of the main line rail serving the busy commuter link to Charing Cross, London, the new Deco casements have helped to reduce noise levels from entering the home which has been greatly appreciated by the family.
For total privacy, attractive Etched Star glass was chosen for the large bathroom window from the Timber Windows sandblasted glass range.
The windows were purchased and installed by their specialist local showroom, “the service was excellent from start to end and we were grateful for the technical support and advice we received,” continues Julie. “It took some time to agree the final order but that’s because we asked for additional and bespoke work by Timber Windows.”

fine joinery the success is very much in the detail. The correct windows and doors will enhance a building from the outside as well as the inside. Externally, windows are fundamental to the look of all structures, especially important in our own homes. Windows can literally make or break your home’s curb appeal.
When chosen and designed correctly, windows and doors can enhance the beauty of your home and design scheme incredibly; conversely, poor design and material choices will detract from your home’s appearance, and can certainly affect its value.

preservation and conservation areas. Whether you aspire to a design scheme that takes cues from the past, the present day or are trying to tap into future trends, the idea of light, airy rooms will never go out of style. With many interior designers enjoying themes that will be here for a good time to come, such as the ruffled edges of shabby chic or the naval blues and whites typical of New England waterfront homes, the correct style of windows in beautiful timber are imperative to draw everything together and create the right backdrop. An appreciation of times gone by is very much of the moment with many design schemes being inspired by retro and vintage themes; where eclectic pieces of furniture from the past are given a new lease of life or enjoyed in all their aged glory. Windows and doors made of the material from those periods, namely timber, is the only option that will truly complement such items and help you achieve an authentic look.

Edwardian Admiralty Arch, London
28 www.timberwindows.com
dwardian architecture is perhaps the least readily identifiable period, yet also one of the most popular – with light and airy interiors perfect for today’s taste.
First some history - Edward VII was on the throne from 1901 to 1910, yet despite this some extend the architectural period to include the end of the First World War.
And there’s another issue to contend with – there are relatively few features that can be readily identified as specifically Edwardian. The period has all the hallmarks of a magpie, recycling and improving ideas from the Victorian and Arts & Crafts periods.
County Hall, London
Hence the difficulty for the layman in identifying houses with certainty.
But expect to find leaded lights, Georgian-style sliding sash windows and the real give-away, the bay window. Long forgotten now, but perhaps essential when dinner party conversation inevitably veers into property, a change in the Buidling Act at the end of the 19th century allowed windows to be built out from the external walls.
And then there’s Edwardian neo-Baroque – epitomised by grand public buildings around the country that are simply architectural show-offs – you’ll find some included in this feature - including Admiralty Arch, the Port of Liverpool Building, and of course County Hall, London. Amazingly this epic curve of Portland stone was not completed until 1922.
But with architecture this powerful who’s really worried about strict definitions…

The perfect replacement windows
“WE NOW CAN’T BELIEVE
WE DIDN’T DO THIS AS SOON AS WE MOVED INTO THE HOUSE
”
Mr & Mrs Martin moved into their Victorian North London terrace 8 years ago, and always knew they’d have to do something with the windows, “the house had the original Sash windows; they had definitely seen better days and had been refurbished a number of times, many were warped and didn’t open properly. They were single panes, let in a lot of noise and were very draughty” Mr Martin explains.
Changes in their circumstances, led the couple to consider the need for action more seriously having lived with the old windows for a number of years, “we started a family, and realised we needed to make the house warmer and less draughty now that we had a small boy to consider, but were also worried about the cost of replacement.”
“We thought about a refurbishment project but actually we wanted the job done properly,” so having looked into their options, came to know of Timber Windows, “a colleague at work had used Timber Windows and recommended them to me, and as it happened, the Hampstead & Highgate showroom was just round the corner; we popped in one day and were blown away and instantly won over both by the quality of the products, and the excellent staff and customer service.” Hidden Spring Box Sash windows finished in White, manufactured in Engineered European Redwood with sash horns and 18mm Ovolo astragal bars to upper sashes.
“We were also impressed by the ability of Timber Windows to produce correct period wooden windows but with all the functionality, security and insulation of a modern window design” so the showroom proceeded to carry out an initial survey in order to provide a quotation to the family, “the costing was reasonable; we were pleased to learn it was within our budget, especially given that the product quality was very high.”
A total of 22 Sash windows were replaced with a mixture of Hidden Spring and Cords & Weights mechanisms amongst them, all finished in a White painted finish with 18mm Ovolo astragal bars, chrome catches, lifts and limit stops.
Mr Martin summarises, “The installation experience was very good, all the staff were very nice. We are very pleased with the finished product and end result; aesthetically they look amazing, both internally and externally. It is a joy to have windows that open so easily and smoothly. The extra insulation and noise reduction is excellent too. We now can’t believe we didn’t do this as soon as we moved into the house, and since having our work done, two other nearby families have popped in for a look, and are all now using Timber Windows themselves.”

EARTH! We offer a range of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified timbers for your windows and doors, including Meranti Hardwood and European Oak. However over 80% of Timber Windows customers choose European Redwood – our favoured alternative. The longevity of this strong, knot free, stable timber is well proven in the United Kingdom. European Redwood is the timber used by the British joiners of yester year – most 100 year old British joiner y was originally made using European Redwood. All of our Redwood derives from sustainability managed plantations in Northern Europe, which means that when trees are felled, new ones are always planted to replace those har vested. In fact European forest areas are now expanding by around 5000 sq. km each year. These forests are also healthier for the environment, removing Co2 from the atmosphere and storing it in their trunks. So when you choose your new Timber Windows you can be sure that you will not harm the Earth.

aving moved into this charming end of terrace house in the centre of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire almost three years ago, the current owner, Mr Farrow knew he was undertaking a sizeable project. The Edwardian home built in 1903 boasts some lovely period details, although some were less desirable than others for today’s living standards, “when I moved in, the original single glazed sash windows were still in this house, sadly they were draughty, noisy and falling apart.”
As part of this full renovation, both inside and out, Mr Farrow visited his local Timber Windows showroom in Cirencester, “the team there really know their stuff, the service was very good indeed, there was no pressure and I felt I was in very safe hands. I simply received good, honest advice.”
Ultimately, the choice of Traditional Box Sashes was made for both the upstairs and downstairs rooms, all in a shade of Off-White. A new Chalfont design front door was also chosen in Black with an Off-White frame, Etched Star glass, a Polished Chrome Samuel Heath letter plate and matching chrome fittings such as a Doctors Knocker.
The work to the house has been wide-ranging, including a new extension to the rear, housing a remodelled kitchen and dining area, with French Doors looking out to the garden. To the front of the house, careful thought has been given to the interior scheme, even matching Off-White wooden shutters have been fitted, “the difference is terrific, not only do they look much better in giving a pleasing natural backdrop to the rooms, but the sound insulation is a revelation; I no longer hear any road noise from passing cars.”

ormerly a barn, this charming home near Harrogate, north Yorkshire has undergone a
major change in its appearance. Old, ill-proportioned doors and windows lacking style have been replaced with timber windows and doors that give a huge boost to the character of this home.
Mr & Mrs Sullivan opted to modernise the windows and doors in keeping with the lovely new kitchen and updates made throughout the rest of the house.
The kitchen and dining area is illuminated from both ends by sets of French doors, and on one end this continues up onto the second storey with a striking, arched feature window incorporating tilt-turn windows and a Juliette balcony.
Elsewhere in the property, windows have been replaced with flush casements and a narrow set of French doors leading to a bedroom, has been replaced with a more practical, glass paned single door.

Sound insulation & temperature control are terrific & much improved
uilt in the late 1930’s on a plot used as an allotment during the Second World War, this double-fronted detached property has been home to the Williams family for the past 30 years.
Their home had a mixture of old and middle-aged windows and doors, all in need of some attention – wooden windows of old had started to rot and the glazing had failed, whilst ugly aluminium patio doors installed in the 1980s simply had to be replaced, “I never liked them” says Mrs Williams.
Despite the old rotting windows, the Williams’ realise and appreciate that modern timber windows are built to exceptionally high standards and engineered specifically to eradicate the problems of the past, “We looked at other suppliers, and although Timber Windows were a little more expensive, there really wasn’t much in it considering the products looked and felt much better than anything else we’d seen including uPVC and aluminium, besides which we’d always wanted timber” explains Mrs Williams.
40 www.timberwindows.com
LEADED DELIGHT A 1930’S RENOVATION To be able to manage the project to suit both their home life and from a financial perspective, the family opted to take a phased approach to the replacements.
The house had a specific leaded pattern to the existing windows that the Williams’ were keen to replicate, “a lot of care was taken by the showroom to get good ratios and proportions with the lead design work” with them opting for a 9mm oval profile dark lead with overlay joints. All the windows were selected in the Lipped Casement design while the front door, is an unusual double door formation, “we chose the shade of Straw for the windows as this complemented the slate roof and brickwork nicely, while the front doors are a contrasting shade, known as Fortnum.”
Double Apsley front door design finished in Fortnum with Lipped Casement windows in Straw, all crafted in Engineered European Redwood.
The homeowners were pleased with the installation process, “the installation was very efficient, and obviously the scale of the work meant there was some disruption but the team cleaned up with care. They were also very careful not to damage the render and internal decoration, and we were very impressed with how little remedial work was needed.”
The results following the installation are just as impressive, with some very welcome improvements, “A big plus for us has been the greatly improved sound insulation, even in heavy rain it’s terrific and we can’t hear the gravel driveway now. Temperature control is much better too; the rooms feel much more comfortable and balanced during both warm and cold weather” delights Mrs Williams.
“Overall we are very pleased with, and we’d do it all again for sure; we’ve even recommended our neighbour to Timber Windows.”

THE ART OF
REVIVAL
T
here can be no doubt that a scheme of plaster mouldings can complement any room or decor, but what would be an appropriate choice for an individual property? And where to turn? The internet is full of endless lists of profiles that would leave the best of us feeling overwhelmed. The styles originating from ancient Greek and Roman architecture have been revived, reinvented into the profiles we are familiar with today. Identifying mouldings from the periods of style can be a helpful starting point. Simple and elegant Georgian mouldings are easy to identify by their architectural shapes and uniform repetition. The Victorians took their influences from further afield and styles became heavier with strong plain lines, becoming even more elaborate with free flowing floral enrichments as tastes evolved. Arts and Crafts, as a throwback to the mass produced Victorian designs, adopted geometric and linear forms. Art Nouveau designs are synonymous with free flowing naturally influenced motifs. Edwardian styles refined the heavy Victorian taste becoming lighter and simpler. Through the 20's and 30's and into the modern movements mouldings were almost eliminated from interest. We have revived interest in Georgian and Victorian styles with individual elements being used in contemporary design.
The current demand for mouldings can be best described as producing 'Modern Classics'. The fashionable houses being built have adopted a mock Georgian style which fits perfectly with a range of straight run cornices of architectural shapes, whilst interiors have favoured an Art Deco style with combinations of stepped mouldings which do not impose but grace the ceiling. When choosing new mouldings, the room size and scheme should be balanced to achieve satisfying proportions. We are using larger mouldings than in previous decades and would always recommend you live with a sample in place to gain a feel for the size and style. At Revival we have years of experience which we are pleased to apply to a design or scheme.

Factory applied micro-porous coatings providing maximum protection but minimal maintenance
Glazing units almost twice as effective as ordinary double glazing
All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.
All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value.This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.

Multi-layer timber sections with opposing grains, balances warping and combats twisting
The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.

Warm edge spacer bars
Low conductivity spacer bars help to minimise heat loss and combat condensation levels on the inner pane.
9
Ventilation channels help prevent double-glazing from misting
Ventilation channels protect against the failure of double glazed units. In standard systems misting can occur when glazing units are allowed to sit in water trapped within the frame.

Security
All Timber Windows are fitted with advanced security locks that wrap around the openers on our Flush Casements and engage bolts in multiple points on our Lipped Casements. Doors are fitted with multi-point locking mechanisms, featuring hook-bolts and deadlock.

Preserving the character in a Yorkshire home
BEFORE All Timber Windows showrooms pride themselves on providing an immaculate service from start to finish, including the use of highly trained fitting teams; “All of the windows and doors were fitted over four days. We It’s no coincidence that the timber windows and doors chosen for this Yorkshire home fit seamlessly

who visits is so impressed with the results! This is the best thing we have ever done to the house.”
Mr& Mrs Allison initially had visions of a smaller scale replacement but were impressed with their discovery in Timber Windows at Harewood; “We decided to replace three of our doors and looked for the very best quality timber windows in view of our previous experience with poor quality timber windows and unattractive uPVC doors. We decided to use Timber Windows at Harewood because our research told us that they made very high quality windows and doors, (this was backed up by a visit to their showroom), and because they very clearly demonstrated competency and knowledge.”
“To cut a long story short, three doors became three doors and fourteen windows (the whole house) with lovely Samuel Heath bronze fittings”
Selected in Oxford Clay, many of the openings retain the original character such as the arched heads, with flush casement windows specified and made to measure from the Timber Windows range. Some areas didn’t require opening windows or doors but having retained the openings, fixed glazing panels allow the maximum possible light to beam into the light, airy rooms.
Timber Windows at Harewood were able to assist with bespoke detailing too; “Due to the nature of the house, every window and door is unique, and three of the windows had to contain existing hand crafted stained glass, which we had to get altered to fit the new windows. Timber
“In summary, Timber Windows provided us with a super product, brilliant customer service (way beyond that expected) and a superb result. We thoroughly recommend them to anyone and would just like to say a big THANK YOU to the whole team.”
Windows stepped in at short notice to get these re-encapsulated and we are very impressed with the final results.”
Preserving the character of the external faces of this property was a crucial consideration and Timber Windows were able to deliver this with a quadruple panel fixture, featuring solid wood panels to the lower half and glazing to the upper half; all suited to match the style of the other windows and doors.
Never has there been a more perfect use for stable doors, and this property really makes the most of the opportunity; modern and technologically advanced but entirely traditional in their appearance. All were fitted with ironmongery from the exclusive Samuel Heath range; Bronze Restrained Door Levers along with Pear Drop Fasteners, Casement Stays and other matching accessories really complete the stylish finish.

every item made to order, designed specifically with you prior to manufacture.
In this north London home, the owner has chosen to very specifically tailor their style and choices to the rooms they sit within. The house is undergoing a major, all-encompassing renovation with some areas now complete.
The lounge is a striking example of a bespoke brief; a single Belbroughton style door leads to the garden accompanied by a triple Flush Casement window set, both manufactured in Engineered European Oak with light oak stain internally but painted White externally to fit with the outside faรงade. In addition, the windows and door combine both a leaded pattern and fine astragal bars in the glazing areas.
Elsewhere, and to fit in with the bedrooms, a combination of triple Sash windows and Flush casement windows, all finished in White each have variations in the design and the formation of the glazing bars. The Sash windows are all hung on traditional brass chains, making an interesting design feature with them all visible adjacent to one another.
Additional flush casement windows and sash windows finished in White and manufactured in Engineered European Redwood. Sash windows hung on brass chains with brass ironmongery. Flush casement windows selected with black period ironmongery.
