Hello Eagles! Hopefully by now everyone has started to get settled in and used to being back in the books. However, there’s a lot more than classes going on at and around EMU this month! This month’s entertainment section features an interview with Drew Barrymore about her new film Whip It (filmed partly in Ypsilanti), the scoop on some great new movies and music and a few ideas for those of you who are stumped about what to be this Halloween. And be sure to flip to the calendar— you won’t want to miss out on the events going on in the area this October such as Jay-Z at the EMU Convocation Center. There’s something for everyone in this issue of emYOU!

In my second month on the job, I’m already struck by all the stories that exist surrounding EMU. The six people I’ve talked to for the spotlights are fascinating individuals, and I hope the job I‘ve done telling their stories have you finding them as interesting as I do. I feel like I could probably pick a student or professor (or alumnus) at random and find something noteworthy about them. But, I’m still in search of your help/suggestions in finding others to profile. Please e-mail me! Hope you enjoy the October issue.

This issue marks my one year anniversary writing for emYOU! The Magazine. Go me. But in all seriousness, the year has gone by faster than I ever could have imagined. There’s been a lot of ups and downs in my life, but, right now, I’m in a happy place, and I’ve got great things going for me: I’m graduating in December (hopefully), I’ve got a loving fiance and a couple of great kids, and feel I’ve really grown as a both a person and a writer. But that’s enough about me. In this month’s College Life section, you’re going to find a handful of great articles so great I’m not going to waste your time here any longer so you can get to the meat of things. Stay classy, Eastern.

SPOTLIGHT: EMU senior Nicole Johnson’s first experience in the Miss Michigan Coed pageant was an example of Murphy’s Law: What can go wrong, will go wrong. She had just started doing pageants. She had no money and no training. The dress she got was a size 11 when she was a size four. She tripped going down the runway. Needless to say, she didn’t place. But Johnson saved her money and put in a lot of work. She knew she’d be back.

daughters while hers was nowhere to be found. But it’s something she’s learned to adjust to. “When I did my first pageant … I realized: This is something I want to do,” Johnson said. “I wasn’t doing it to make anybody happy but myself, so this is something that I have to do for me, regardless if anybody else understands it or appreciates it. This is something I work for myself.”

Johnson’s second time around in Miss Michigan Coed went a lot better than the first. She made the Johnson has heard all the top 10. Then the top five. wouldn’t have been ready.” Johnson is a goal-oriented person. She said she came to Eastern with “a million” goals to accomplish. Among them: To get on one of the promotional billboards for EMU seen along I-94 and beyond. “I’m not graduating, I’m not leaving Eastern until I get on a billboard,” she said. “I don‘t know what I have to do, but I‘m not leaving, I still have two years left, I‘m not leaving until I get on a billboard.” Another goal of hers was to be part of 27 organizations. She’s at 13, including NAACP, Black Student Union, Residence Hall Association and working for the Holman Learning Center. “I just absolutely love it here,” she said. “Coming here was one of my best decisions in life” Johnson said she almost attended historically black Spelman College in Atlanta, but wanted to be closer to her home, which is in Detroit. She said Eastern is more exciting than smaller schools in the state. “Every single day, they’re doing something. Somebody’s doing something,” she said. “There’s always something going on, something for you to do.” This time, it happened. On her fourth try, she was named Miss Michigan Coed. Don’t expect her to show up on your TV this year, though. Miss Michigan Coed is not Miss Michigan America or Miss Michigan USA. And don’t take the “Coed” to mean that there’s a male portion; it just means that it’s a scholarship endeavor. Johnson will, however, be heading to the national Coed pageant, which is to take place Thanksgiving weekend at Disney World. While the entry is free, she’s looking to raise

She’s trying to get 100 people to give her $30; interested parties can contact her through Facebook. “This year has been absolutely, hands-down, the best year of my entire life,” Johnson said. “I just really feel like this is my year, and I’m going to go down there and kick butt.” Johnson plans to be part of pageants for a while. She wants to start a Miss DPS (Detroit Public Schools) pageant, giving out a full scholarship to the winner. Her ultimate goal is to be Miss America. Not Miss USA; she says Miss America’s application is free and in-depth while Miss USA’s is one page and the only one that asks for the applicant’s height, weight and hair color. “(Miss America’s) job, she spends one year of her entire life literally going across America just helping out wherever she can, and I like to do that here just being Nicole,” she said.

EMYOUTHEMAGAZINE

The big move is finally over and classes have started, I am officially a college student. No more high school and no more being dependent on my parents, I am officially on my own. So far what I had expected college to be is not how it has been. For one I expected the classes to be insanely difficult, and so far they are not. I am taking sixteen credits and so far it is no big deal, besides an English class that involves a lot of reading, to which I am no stranger to, my course load is not bad at all. Another expectation is that my roommate and I were going to be best friends. Again so far not how I imagined, moving in with someone I do not really know is harder than I thought. Due to different schedules we don’t see each other very often, I will be leaving for class and she will be coming home again. Adjusting to someone else’s lifestyle as well as adjusting to your own life changes is extremely difficult. I also did not think I would miss my family as much as I do. With two weeks down and adjusting to my new schedule I am starting to realize how much I am starting to really miss my other friends. I have heard that the second week is when it starts

10

emYOU! THE MAGAZINE

to get difficult because all the glory of welcome week is over and now you are truly exposed to college life. With my second week completed I have successfully made it to all my classes without getting lost, and I have also kept up on all my schoolwork. Another task I have successfully completed was my laundry, all my clothes are still the same size and I did not shrink any of them or have to call my mom to tell me how to do it. I have tried to establish a schedule for every day that consists of classes, working out (I am determined not to gain the freshman fifteen) and completing all my homework. I am still trying to find out where I belong here, this past week I went to the student job and student organization fair, attended a sorority meeting with a friend all hoping to meet new people and find a place for me. I am still looking but I will find my place at Eastern!

Everything is going a lot smoother this week. I’m finally getting a little more adjusted to the routine that I have every day with classes, practice and homework. I’m getting my first papers and projects assigned which is the only bad part, but I don’t think it will be too bad. I’m also finally meeting some new people which is awesome, it’s fun to meet people who are into the same things as you and introduce them to your friends and just all hang out and get to know each other. I finally experience my first game as a college athlete, and it was amazing. Being with the team and just doing what we love and having fun was the best. It made us a lot closer and it really felt like we actually molded together as a team. I’m really excited to see how things go with that because that was only the first game. I’m sure we will become stronger and closer as a team. After having a bad week, I’m really starting to get used to college, and I am glad I listened to everyone that said things will get better, because they did. College is really fun and I’m finally starting to see that.

YEAH, BUT WTF WILL I BE?

A GUY’S WORST NIGHTMARE BY: JOSEPH STROMSKI II joe.stromski@emyouthemagazine.com Guys, imagine this: You’re on the dance floor, surrounded by women wearing outfits more revealing than the cover of most “Maxim. There’s bikini-clad bunnies to your left, sexy witches to your right and some drunken girl you barely know grinding on you with her devil tail rubbing awkwardly against your gift-wrapped genitals. The real kicker is - it took you four days to come up with the unoriginal idea of putting your manliness in a box, and the six other guys on the dance floor all thought of the same thing. It’s Halloween again, and that means all of those beautiful women around you have spent countless hours searching for the Holy Grail of costumes to run around in on this holiest of college holidays. There’s no reason you shouldn’t either. It may seem practical to just draw on

a Sharpie mustache, throw on some aviators and call yourself a cop or wrap your junk in a box - but where’s the fun in that? Besides, you’re guaranteed to have a better chance of attracting attention to yourself (i.e. get laid) if you put some time and effort into your costume(s). If you’re a guy, finding the perfect costume can be hard (I’m not even going to bother talking about how hard it is for the ladies to find a costume; after all, there’s a billion different costume choices for slut), and most stores seem to carry a heck of a lot more costumes for women than they do for men. Or by limiting the guys’ selection to gangster, pregnant nun, ketchup bottle, Hugh Hefner or redneck cheerleader. To do it up right and maximize your chances bringing home one of the bunnies, you’re going to need

to piece your costume together from scratch. It will be no easy task: You’ll need to research social trends, what your friends are going as, what establishments you plan to attend over the course of the weekend and about a dozen other things, just to put together the perfect costume that maximizes your peacocking potential. If, however, after mulling those things over you find yourself at your wit’s end and still without a costume, consider these options: 1. Johnny Castle 2. Dress as yourself, interrupt people all night by saying, “Ima let you finish...” They should get it. 3. Michael Jackson (too soon?) 4. Ziggy Stardust For more costume advice, tweet @mfstromski or visit Fantasy Attic in Depot Town.

“When it’s fly-by day, don’t ask me anything important.” Koehn considered research, but said he “wanted something a little more rewarding.” He explained that the people who would be reading his research were already interested in the subject, while he was more interested in getting others interested. Even then, he found teaching “inherently valuable.” He runs an informal class, inviting students to speak up immediately if they have questions (he says he doesn’t like it when students wait until the end of class, because then he has to remember what he said during the part of the lecture the student’s referencing) and to challenge what he says. He said he likes teaching EMU students, which he‘s done since 2005. “Many of the students are here to learn,” Koehn said. “They’re not here because society tells them to. “Many are here because they have a curiosity of things around them,” he continued. “They’re not here because they think it’s a way to get wealthy.”

COLLEGE LIFE:

The very first and most important thing you need to do is go to your closet, take out your high school varsity jacket and pack it away somewhere it will never be seen. Nothing screams “freshman” more than varsity jackets. Note: The only time it is acceptable to wear a varsity jacket throughout your collegiate career is at a theme party. NO EXCEPTIONS! Your mom isn’t doing your laundry anymore, and nobody likes a slob. Your professors, peers and, most importantly, the ladies will think less of you if you smell like a foot and wear dirty or wrinkly clothing. If you’re smooth enough, recruit a cute girl from your hall to do your laundry and press your clothes - chicks love doing that stuff, so it shouldn’t be problem finding one. And remember to always wear a clean shirt and underpants each day. Keep your hair neatly trimmed and don’t be afraid of a little facial hair. Unless you’re in a band, there is no reason to have an untamed mane. As for the facial hair, it makes you look rugged and weathered. Dump your girlfriend if she is still in high school or enrolled at some other institution of higher learning. It’s only a matter of time before you find somebody much cooler than her that you get to see/ copulate with on a daily basis. Nobody cares about your achievements as a high school jock. Keep that to yourself.

Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean you need to dress to impress everyday by wearing high heels and caking on the makeup. Besides, do you know how much walking you have to do between classes? Most freshman females also make the mistake of wearing too much or heavy makeup. While glittery bright blue eye shadow may be acceptable for Monday night at Theo’s, it is not, however, acceptable in class. Instead, lean towards the softer side of things and highlight your natural features. Don’t overdo the hairdo. You’ll notice most upperclassmen opt for something pulled back or easy to manage throughout the day. Save the updo, curls and crimps for special occasions. Deep tans and mini skirts may have been acceptable in high school, but in the college classroom, not so much (especially when paired with UGGs). Showing too much skin can be skanky and attract the wrong kind of attention. I’m not saying that everybody should be walking around in snow suits, but try and keep it classy. And trying to look like Paris or L.C. everyday is anything but.

Group travel is a huge no-no wherever you may be traveling. It says: “Hey, we’re new to campus and the community and don’t feel comfortable enough to do anything individually.” Whether you’re going to a dining hall or to a party off campus, try to travel in groups of no more than four or five people. Fusion backpacks are the biggest telltale of them all. Repurpose them for some other use than to carry your textbooks - they make great bags to collect candy in come Halloween. Follow me on Twitter: mfstromski

Dump your high school boyfriend. He’s already cheating on you. Keep the jewelry to a minimum. One or two pieces from Tiffany & Co. are OK, but any more than that and you’re going to look like a daddy’s girl. The same goes for purses: Get rid of all your Coach - it stopped being cool in colleges when you got it in high school. This one isn’t just for freshman but all women: There’s a weight limit on leggings as pants. Seriously.

Lanyards and key rings are not necklaces. Sure, lanyards make it easy to carry your keys around your neck when your hands are full, but other than that, they’re annoying, they never compliment your outfit and make it sound like you’re carrying a rope full of jingling bells whenever you’re walking.

Does this even look cool in high school?

e started out as Derek George, working as a DJ at Theo’s. Now, listeners of WOMC 104.3 know him as Beau Derek. “I pretty much always wanted to be a DJ,” he said, telling stories of taping song introductions in his bedroom as a kid. He wasn’t sure how hard (or easy) it was to get into the business, so instead of going to Specs Howard or a specialized broadcast school, he decided to come to Eastern Michigan so that if radio didn’t work out he’d have a degree to fall back on. While at EMU, he worked at WQBR,

the AM station based out of Quirk. “I don’t think you could get it in your car if you were parked in front of Quirk,” Derek said about the strength (or lack thereof) of the station. He also interned at 96.3 FM, now WDVD, where he got experience working for the station’s Friday Night Live show, which included an open mic. One of the people who took part was Marshall Mathers, who became better known to the world as Eminem. Derek also DJ-ed at Theo’s, which he said was one of the highlights of his time at Eastern. Among the songs he liked playing was Inner City’s “Good Life.” One Inner City member was former EMU student Kevin Saunderson. “Had I not worked at Theo’s, I felt like I would’ve missed out on a lot,” he said, including all the cool people he met. He referred to his time in Ypsilanti without it as potentially an “empty experience.” Derek encourages EMU students to get involved (“Make it a place you want to be”) and says one of his biggest regrets was living at home his first year (he grew up in Canton).

He graduated in 1994 with a major in telecommunications and a minor in art. Shortly after, he looked for an improvement to his name. There was a DJ named Michael J. Fox while Derek attended EMU and he looked for a name like that. After considering George McFly, King George and Boy George, he went with Beau Derek. He said that even if you hear “Beau Derek will be” someplace, and go expecting the star of “10,” at least he got you in the door. After graduating, he started at a Grand Rapids station, WGRD. In 1997, he got his foot in the door at WDRQ 93.1. He did a 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift Saturdays, meaning he had to make the cross-state commute from Grand Rapids weekly. Annoying? “I was geeked for it,” he said. After stints in Panama City Beach, Fla., South Bend, Ind. (WNDV), Fort Wayne, Ind. (WDFX), and Lafayette, Ind. (WAZY), he returned to WDRQ. When it changed formats, he briefly worked at WDVD, which had owned WDRQ. Then he applied for and filled the opening at WOMC, where he’s been for about four years, working along side Detroit radio legends like Tom Ryan and Dick Purtan. “I grew up listening to Dick Purtan, now I work with him,” he said. “I can call him on his cell phone.” Derek’s show runs from 7 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday. He takes requests during the first hour, but after that you don’t hear him much. “I try to talk only when I’ve got something good to say,” he said. It’s a contrast to some syndicated latenight programs, which feature as much talking as music. It’s one edge Derek has over competitor stations which play similar music, such as WNIC 100.3 and WMGC 105.1. He says “dance” music is his personal favorite. He still likes and listens to a lot of the same songs he was playing at Theo’s some 15 years ago.

He sees himself as a giver of life, one who relieves these people of the pain they suffer in their everyday lives. But he gets something from the killing as well. He thrives on living out that moment in his victims’ lives and living as them if but only for a moment. I was able to find a great publisher who handles all the aspects of publicizing, to selling and distributing and even getting me interviews with the media. I appreciate how well they support me.” “Liquid Soul” wastes no time when it comes to creating a very vivid view into the mind of its main character, who, by the way, is nameless. From the opening lines of the book, the readers get a sense that there is much to be found out about the man. The book starts out: “I don’t have a past. I don’t have a future. I just need Liquid Soul. It wasn’t like this had been my first time, but it felt just as good and as pure. The addiction was something I just couldn’t help…, it was feeling the crimson of my victims.” Carter answered most of the questions readers have about the character and his experiences in this, the first installment, but he said there is more to be explained about the killer and his life in subsequent books. “Each chapter is like a story in itself. I don’t leave readers with heavy questions, but there are definitely aspects of him that I didn’t reveal,” he said. “There also wasn’t a cliffhanger ending, but I did leave room for a second book.” The newly published author has already begun work on his second book, a follow-up to “Liquid Soul,” and doesn’t anticipate as many hangups during his second go around. “I know it’s kind of redundant and can be annoying to say, but patience really is a virtue,” Carter said. “Liquid Soul” is available for purchase on a1books.com, amazon.com, borders.com and barnesandnoble.com.

TENNIS, IEDEREEN?

TENIS, CUALQUIER PERSONA?

TENNIS, ANYONE? BY: JASON IDALSKI jason.idalski@emyouthemagazine.com

28

An Eastern Michigan women’s tennis practice sounds like most practices going on at colleges and high schools across the country. The sound of ball hitting racket, the coach saying “here we go,” the players talking to themselves and at each other. But it’s in the talking where it becomes clear this isn’t an ordinary practice. The “nice shots” have heavy accents. The word “switch” sounds like “sweech.” The anguished cries after a disappointing missed shot are unintelligible. For Eastern’s eight players are from India, Austria, China, Australia, Belgium, Zimbabwe, Bolivia and the Netherlands. Notice that the United States is conspicuously absent from the list. While it may be a rarity that Eastern‘s team is fully comprised of international players (it is the only all-foreign team in the Mid-American Conference), coach Ryan Ray says the use of international players in college tennis is common. “Division I women’s tennis is 50% international across the nation,” The nine Mid-American conference schools that have Ray said. “So, you really need to be women’s tennis combine to have 78 players on their able to recruit globally in order to rosters; 33 foreign, 45 domestic. A breakdown by school: compete. “It’s a combination of a lot of SCHOOL INT’L. PLAYERS U.S. PLAYERS contacts in each country, recruiting services. Many of the international Akron 6 1 players will post their application Ball State 3 7 and video on Web sites like Bowling Green 0 7 YouTube. And many will e-mail you Buffalo 7 3 and kind of get lucky in them finding Eastern Michigan 8 0 you first.” Miami (Ohio) 2 9 Dutch sophomore Miriam Northern Illinois 2 7 Westerink came to Eastern in the Toledo 2 6 first manner. Western Michigan 3 5 Though Ray contacted Westerink first, Westerink was using a

recruiting service that Ray worked with after the first contact. The service provided a handful of coaches, Ray included, with her contact information. Westerink said part of the reason she came to Eastern was because of Ray; saying he was nice. When she got to Eastern, she also grew to like her teammates. While the team’s communication is good (after all, each student needs to know a certain level of the language to be enrolled at Eastern), there are misunderstandings. “Sometimes I start talking Dutch, and then nobody can understand me,” Westerink said. Although, her ability to lapse into her native tongue can be a positive, such as avoiding on-court penalties for using foul or abusive language. “Nobody can understand, so I can say whatever I want,” she said. Westerink said another reason she came to Eastern is that she wouldn’t be alone. “There were a lot of new freshman,” she said. “I was not the only new freshman, so that was nice.” Ray said that‘s important. “As far as team chemistry, they really have a lot of similar situations in living in a different country together, and it really helps bond them all,” Ray said. Even though the last American to compete for the Eagles played in 2006-2007 (Emma Czarnecki of Farmington Hills), Ray says he’s willing to take American players.

“By increasing the pool of applicants that you look at globally, it just happened that the most talented and most interested in coming to EMU have been international,” Ray said. “Just by coincidence, it’s worked out that way. “In some of the mid-major conferences, if you want to compete, you need to try and look to find the best player, wherever they may be, to try and compete not only in your own conference, but on a national level.” And Ray said he has a team that can compete in the MAC this year, despite having two freshmen, five sophomores and one junior. “I anticipate being top half of the MAC, and possibly we definitely have the potential to be a lot higher than that,” Ray said. “We’ll just have to see with the youth and inexperience, how they come together this year.” Eastern began its season at the Bowling Green Invitational on Sept. 19-20 (despite starting practice Sept. 9) and played in the Gopher Invitational the following weekend and was scheduled to play the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor from Oct. 2-4. The team begins the dual meet portion of its schedule in January; its first home match (at the Chippewa Club) is February 5 against Syracuse.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT:

Directions: Combine Drew Barrymore’s creative genius with the Detroit Derby Girls, the metro Detroit area, and throw in a little Ellen Page. Shake well, bake for more than a year and voila — it’s Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It.” In “Whip It,” Ellen Page stars as Bliss Cavendar — a girl who is searching for her identity and finds it once she joins a roller derby team. The film was shot in the Detroit area, including areas of Ypsilanti, and features Detroit’s own derby girls along with many extras from the area. On September 11, Barrymore visited Bonaventure roller rink in Farmington Hills for a red-carpet event in which she celebrated the imminent release of the film, thanking those who were in the cast as well as the public for their support. During Barrymore’s recent visit to Farmington Hills, emYOU! The Magazine was able to ask her a couple of questions about filming “Whip It.” Here’s what she had to say:

DREW BARRYMORE

Q: What do you get when you mix Ellen Page, roller skates & the metro Detroit area? A: Director Drew Barrymore’s brainchild “Whip It.” BY: AMANDA SLATER amanda.slater@emyouthemagazine.com

What was the reality of directing a movie compared to what you imagined it would be? “It was incredibly difficult. It takes a lot of discipline. While everyone else is going out to dinner and living their life, you’re staying at the office until two in the morning then you’re waking up at four or five. You get very little sleep. You lose a lot of weight because you never have time to eat. But what the flipside of that is is that you really get to create your own vision and be in control of it. Everything in this movie is really my fault. So if there’s stuff that people don’t like, I’m really absolutely to blame. And if there’s something

about it that really connects with people, then I’m so grateful. I think you really have to do your homework and stay true to your gut instinct, but I also collaborated with amazing people. Every department head was incredible and the cast was amazing. I just wanted to be someone that inspired them and had a real plan and vision going into it so that I could guide them through it in a very educated, stable, empowered way.”

Why did you choose Ypsilanti as a filming location? What did you like about Ypsi? I know

emYOU! THE MAGAZINE

31

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: you hung out at the Elbow Room after hours. What were some of your favorite places? “I love the Elbow Room. That place is also in the movie. We get the sign in there and everything. I love Ypsi and I just love the town and the family neighborhood that it provided for Ellen’s family in the movie. It was just perfect. It was sort of this timeless, beautiful backdrop. I couldn’t have dreamed of finding a better location to cinematically tell the story and just the vibe of where this family lives than this perfect cul-de-sac in Ypsilanti.”

What drew you to Ellen Page? “Actually I asked her to do this before she filmed ‘Juno.’ I’ve seen all of her other work and I believe that she is a true actress. She’s not someone who is out there doing just anything, but really working hard and discovering who she is out in the world. I think she is the real deal. I was privileged to be able to work with someone who has got so much stoic strength and beautiful vulnerability. She’s incredibly smart and funny and talented, but she is also so human. It was such a great collaboration to work with someone who is so good at what they do. It’s inspiring.” “Whip It” will be released in theatres October 2.

The first couple of days a couple of the girls were really nervous, but by the end they were like, ‘I want you to hit me as hard as you can.’ It was kind of a ‘Fight Club’ moment.”

According to Fantasy Attic rental manager Wendy, Alice in Wonderland costumes are going to be a hot commodity this year. “There have been a couple of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ plays,” she said. “There was an Alice in Wonderland burlesque show in the spring (“Through the Looking Glass”). The Tim Burton movie is coming out next year. It’s always kind of popular, but I think it’s going to be a hot one this year.”

and that she anticipates the cute sailor girl costume they have in stock will be no exception.

In keeping with the Alice in Wonderland theme, women’s Mad Hatter costumes are also predicted to be big sellers. And don’t forget the Queen of Hearts, who is also predicted to make a comeback.

These costumes have become staples for girls who want to be sweet, but a little sexy too.

Vampire costumes are currently hotter than ever with the recent “Twilight” and “True Blood” craze.

When all else fails, just be a sexy witch. It’s one costume that never goes out of style.

Wendy of Fantasy Attic says that cute, short costumes are always big sellers

look a little scary at this time of year, a Michael Myers mask will always do the trick. Tim Burton’s upcoming version of “Alice in Wonderland” featuring Johnny Depp as a sufficiently creepy looking Mad Hatter is bound to inspire many Depp-esque Mad Hatter costumes this Halloween season. According to Wendy, superheroes are always the number one selling costumes for guys. So, when in doubt, choose to be Batman, Superman, Spiderman … or maybe even a supervillain such as The Joker. Along the line of super-villains, Michael Myers is making another comeback with this August’s release of “Halloween II,” the sequel to the “Halloween” movie remake. And if you’re the kind of guy who likes to

The death of the King of Pop will no doubt inspire many Michael Jackson lovers to dress as Jacko himself. Besides, nothing says Halloween like the “Thriller” version of Michael Jackson, complete with dancing zombies. “I think Star Trek is going to be big this year,” Wendy said. This is attributed partly to the new Star Trek movie and partly because it’s simple. “You can wear black pants and just put a shirt on. Guys usually like something easy to do.”

If you want to attempt a couple costume this year, try going as Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter or as vampires. However, the winning couple costume this year just might be Jon and Kate of “Jon and Kate Plus Eight.” Stores are even selling the Kate Gosselin wig …and there must be a Jon mask out there somewhere. Finally, the best group costume goes to Michael Jackson and the dancing zombies of “Thriller.”

It’s classic. It’s easy. And “Twilight” and “True Blood” loving girls will think it’s sexy.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT: MOVIE & DVD REVIEW BY: AMANDA SLATER Amanda.slater@emyouthemagazine.com ALBUM REVIEW BY: BILAL SAEED Bilal@pakmode.com 3.5/5 Water Towers

Starring: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale

“The Informant!” will keep you guessing and keep you laughing. Based on a true story, Matt Damon plays the part of Mark Whitacre, the vice president of a lysinedeveloping company who hesitantly becomes the FBI’s undercover man after he tips off the bureau about the company’s involvement in illegal price-fixing. When the FBI asks him to wear a wire, Whitacre begins to see himself as a secret agent — and the result is hilarity. However, when he starts to get carried away, things get sticky and he

Brett Favre and Jay-Z have one thing in common: they both retired from their professions only to return because the passion inside them couldn’t keep them away from what they loved most. However, the big difference is that Favre has made his comeback(s) an annual event (having to get a permission slip signed from the nursing home he’s currently

residing at for his latest comeback with the Minnesota Vikings). Unlike Favre, Jay-Z’s return to the game has been welcomed warmly and very much needed. In a day and age where auto-tune has filled the radio and killed the art of the live performance, tracks like “D.O.A.” (Death of Auto Tune) are refreshing and necessary as the King of Hip Hop attempts to save a declining industry. “The Blueprint

III” is nothing short of pure genius, proving that true hip hop still has mass appeal. Favorite Tracks: “Forever Young,” “Already Home,” “Hate” and “Run This Town” *If you’re living under a ROC and haven’t heard that Jiggaman himself will be gracing EMU with his presence on Oct. 21, visit www. emich.edu/convocation to purchase your tickets before it’s too late!

“AWAY WE GO”

Burt and Verona, a free-spirited couple, learn that they are expecting their first child together. Questioning their parenting capabilities, they decide to do what any good parents would do — move closer to Burt’s parents, the future grandma and

begins to get tangled up in his own versions of the truth. Director Steven Soderbergh (Oceans 11 trilogy) does yet another brilliant job, and Damon (who gained 30 pounds for the part) couldn’t be more perfect in the role of Whitacre. The film’s brand of humor thrives on subtlety — Damon’s specialty in comedic roles. He doesn’t disappoint, providing just the right blend of half-smiles and ironic remarks from under his cheesy mustache that not only makes Whitacre’s character comedic, but believable.

Artist: Jay-Z

“THE BLUEPRINT III” grandpa. However, when they learn that Burt’s parents have finalized plans to move to Belgium the month before the baby is due, Burt and Verona set out on a journey across the United States and into Canada visiting old friends and relatives in search of a place to put down roots. The experiences they have

along the way range from tragic to hilarious as they discover what it is that truly makes a home. Director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty“) beautifully brings to life this charming indie “love story,” a story that is every bit as profound and moving — if not more — than his previous work.

BY: JOSEPH STROMSKI II Joe.stromski@emyouthemagazine.com

This month for “The Bottom Line,” instead of critiquing local businesses like I usually would do, I’m doing something special. I’ve decided to publish an essay I wrote for one of my summer classes that critiques yours truly. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It goes a little something like this:

For this essay, I’ve chosen to write mostly on self-awareness, and I’m going to use myself as an example. Knowing exactly who I am and what I want out of life, I feel I’ve got a really good grasp on my own self-concept. I’m a 22 year-old white male, living in the uppermiddle class of American society, with the ambition to become a nationally recognized magazine columnist within the next 10 years. I’m confident I’m going to reach my definition of successful and do it all while balancing work, family and continuing education. Using the previous paragraph as a base, most would believe that I have high self-esteem and that I know exactly what I want out of life. While part of that is true, there are many things about myself that make me uneasy in public, especially around the people that

38

emYOU! THE MAGAZINE

I need to impress. To put it bluntly, at no point am I more self-aware than when I am standing in front of a full-length mirror wearing nothing but my birthday suit, with all of my imperfections staring back at me. Society, well, American society, anyway, has taught us that to be accepted by others our selfpresentation must be in complete order. Mine, unfortunately, is in complete shambles: I’m overweight, my thighs rub together, I’m balding, I’ve got a 4 inch scar on my forehead, my skin is dry, and I’ve got hair growing in places that prevent me from taking my shirt of when I go to the beach. I’m constantly mentally noting reflected appraisals and adjusting my behavior and actions accordingly, to prevent myself from putting myself in any unwanted situation. Thinking retrospectively, I’m positive that my low self-esteem stems from the days in middle and high school wear, when socialization started playing a big part in my life. All too often was I beat up in the bathroom for differing opinions, made fun of for my expressive dress or left to sit by myself during lunch because I didn’t subscribe to any labels or cliques. These days, very rarely do I express myself through fashion or vocally. I’m the kid you’ll find sitting in the back of the room, dressed

in blue jeans or athletic shorts, wearing a non-descriptive T-shirt or polo and without product in what hair I have left. I am not the best looking person in the room and am fully aware of it. Because society has taught me that I won’t be accepted until I have a washboard stomach, pearly white teeth and can fit into pants with a 32 inch waist, you’re not going to notice me, and I’ve come to accept that. Currently, you may find yourself asking, “What is a kid claiming to barely express himself in public doing telling me all of these personal things about himself?” To be honest, while I am not keen on public selfdisclosure, I’ll comfortable and willingly do it all day long on paper, safely behind my computer screen where nobody can see me. The minute my full, current appearance is attached to my words it’s game over. For nobody wants to listen to an ugly person give speeches on a soap box, that’s just not the way the world works. Until it is, I’ll be in the back row pounding away at my keyboard.

Even though the rest of the world can be cruel, you’ve got to deal with it the best you can - for there is no true justice in this world.

Just because Kanye may not care about people’s feelings doesn’t mean you can have the same disregard. Lighten up a little bit. Not everyone is as outspoken as you are. Some people actually think about what they’re going to say before they say it. One place you can be “Kanye,” though, in is the bedroom. Tell your lover how you really feel, and watch how intense

While you and your lover are making great progress, you have been wearing your emotions on your sleeve too much. Too many words from your mouth are making less come out of his. The less you say, the more he will begin to speak up about his emotions — putting you in a better place than you were in before. Lucky Numbers: 7, 25, 31

For some reason people are misunderstanding your intentions right now. Take one deep breath and explain where you are coming from one more time. If they still don’t get it, move on. Don’t let negative people bring you down. Someone who constantly wears blue has their eye on you. Be sure to smile back! Lucky Numbers: 5, 16, 23

You have tons and tons of energy but don’t know exactly where to channel it. Set goals for yourself that are not so high you can’t achieve them. The biggest payoff this month will be following your aim all the way to the target and blowing it up bigger than you imagined. A certain pop artist will be your inspiration. Lucky Numbers: 11,18,27

Your life consists of many different relationships where the spotlight has always been on you. Take time out to instead shine the light on the relationship in your life clouded with the most frustration. Watch out or you could catch a literal case of the crabs. You need to take a step back from your promiscuous ways. Relax and spend some quality time with yourself and close friends for a little while. Sleep alone for a couple of weeks. The one you miss the most is the one you really want. That person wants you too. Lucky Numbers: 10, 20, 30
