Welcome to our 12th On Farm Auction Kelly and I are delighted to welcome you again to what will be our 12th annual 2 year bull sale. As I said last year, it is indeed an exciting time to be in the beef business! Indicators are still pointing towards a strong near to medium term - finally the stars are aligning for beef production in our part of the world. World demand has finally exceeding supply for the first time in 40 odd years. We must remember however, that consumers are demanding higher quality and great experiences every time they enjoy a beef occasion. This means that just producing Angus beef no longer cuts the mustard to an increasingly discerning diner. Moreover, those that can afford to pay for our select prime grass finished Angus beef do want the very best or they will go elsewhere. It is fascinating to note that in the USA, since the GFC of 2008 beef sales have declined for the standard grades of beef but Certified Angus Beef, the branded Angus program like AngusPure has increased sales year on year. This clearly points to consumers even in hard times being prepared to pay for a great beef meal. While prices are good, it is the time to build you herds genetics to meet these higher standards. It is the only way we have of trying to move beyond the commodity cycle of just marketing prime steer or grinding beef. Again this year, to help with your pre sale day selections we have videoed a good number of lots to give you an idea of our lineup as part of Rural TV’s Bull Walk service and these can be viewed on-line from our website storthoaks.com We invite you to view at your convenience and would welcome your feedback on this new way of presenting the bulls.

Completeness of Recording Storth Oaks is proud to continue to hold the very highest 5 Star rating in the Completeness of Recording accreditation system from Breedplan. This gives you the buyer confidence that all animals are measured consistently for the greatest number of traits. We believe firmly that stud farming requires a total professional dedication to recording and that is the ethos of Storth Oaks and all its staff.

Docility is important to us as farmers and also to high quality beef production and the experiences our end consumers enjoy. We have always placed much emphasis on docility at Storth Oaks and have included it in part of our annual Beef Class assessment undertaken by John Hammond. In addition we have introduced at weaning this year a further measure of temperament which will go into a new trial docility EBV.

AngusPure index Again this year we stress the AngusPure index as being key in making your selection decisions. This index we feel suits most of our customers requirements in a self replacing herd situation, wanting to have excellent surplus stock for sale into the best prime beef markets. New Premium Brands of Beef and many branded programs demand marbling for premium payments. That is only natural and if you look at the worlds biggest beef brand - CAB in the USA, the biggest reason that cattle there miss making the brand is lack of marbling. In fact that accounts for 95% of the animals that miss! Storth Oaks recognises that the consumer is king and we must select for animals that will meet their expectations. The AngusPure index has a marbling weighting and will assist you in making sure your breeding program is going in the right forward direction. Of the 73 bulls in this catalogue, every bull qualifies to carry the A

endorsement – In fact the average AngusPure index of all bulls offered in this catalogue is +$172 – in the top 5% of the breed!

We think you will struggle to find another sale in New Zealand with this high average AP index’s. AngusPure endorses bulls in the top 50% of the breed. We suggest by selecting sires in the top 50% of the breed you will really make progress which will mean more dollars to your bottom line.

Marbling For the last five catalogues I have outlined reasons why marbling is so important for the consumer. This has not changed! Research done in the US in 2013 shows marbling explains up to 61% of the variation in overall product performance consisting of juiciness, tenderness and flavour attributes. Clearly all the research is confirming that marbling is the single most important indicator of beef quality, of whether a steak will consistently be tender, juicy and have flavour. It does not cost you, the bull buyer anything more to make marbling part of your selection and therefore your genetic future so why would you not put it into your mix??

Selecting for heifer mating or Calving Ease Breeders wanting to purchase ease of calving bulls suitable for yearling heifer mating should first select the production index that suits them. i.e. either the AngusPure or the Self Replacing index. You can then rank your sires on one of these indexes as you normally would. Once you have done that, to identify a suitable heifer bull you would look at those with lower birth weight EBV’s and bulls that were positive for calving ease. The calving ease EBV is really the critical one in this scenario.

Genomics This is the new paradigm in the beef business. For four or five years here at Storth Oaks we have HD50K analysed selected bulls to help improve their EBV accuracy and to allow us to select bulls with superior genetics to use in our program. This new technology has so much more to offer, for example being able to identify heifer replacements at an early age. This is so exciting and before long, there will be a product available for you as commercial producers to use to assist in your own replacement animals. Given you have been buying Storth Oaks genetics, you will be in an advanced position to make this work. Kelly and I attended the American Angus Convention in Kansas City last November, and the whole buzz was genomics. To me it is clear, were as EBV’s, boxed beef, mating heifers were all game changing paradigms, the next one is clearly genomics and the Angus breed has a huge advantage over any other breed because of the large population that has been tested. This will, if we proceed to use the technology, help lock in our breeds dominant position for the next decade.

In view of this, Storth Oaks has started to not only parent verify every animal born with SNP technology, but to also use i50K to genomic ally enhance the EBV’s of every animal born from 2015 onwards. We are the first herd in New Zealand to do this and puts us at the forefront of this wave and will ensure your herds have the maximum information available to enhance your programs as well. A good number of the bulls in this catalogue have been i50K analysed.

Stocking policy for bulls The bulls at Storth Oaks are run in large mobs on the hills. That means all 140 odd weaner bulls are run in one mob until their 400 day weights and scanning in November. This makes sure that they are put to the test as one group. After November the mob is cut into two based on age. They stay in their mob of 70 odd bulls until February when we start the process of testing them for fertility, beef class etc and they go into mobs of 20-25 bulls leading into the sale.

While this means that the bulls wont be as big as some, we believe that getting bulls too big does not help you the commercial farmer and leads to more break downs in bulls without impacting their ability to leave great calves with the right genetics.

Retaining Semen interests in lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 20, 24, 32, 37, 39, 43, 51, 52, and 58. Storth Oaks is retaining a semen marketing share in the above lots. By doing this we are able to offer you the very best bulls and are not retaining any bulls ourselves. Retaining the semen interest allows us to collect more semen for our own use in the future but also to be involved in any future marketing of the bull and share in the rewards of semen sales with the new owner.

FMG Angus Premier Bull Cover We are pleased to be offering the new FMG Angus Premier Bull Cover at our sale. This is a great deal negotiated by Angus NZ and will save you 3% on previous years insurance. You can select to insure your purchases for the very competitive rate of 6.5% for 9 months covering you for loss in transit, infertility and death. This cover can be increased to 12 months for an additional fee. We recommend you take advantage of this fantastic rate. FMG are the exclusive providers of bull insurance on sale day. If for some reason you don’t want to insure with FMG you can arrange alternative cover.

The Storth Oaks Difference What do you get different when you buy a Storth Oaks bull? ✓ Storth Oaks is a genuine hill country property run in a very commercial manner where the cow herd is tested on the hills and has to perform.

✓ This winter we will calve 310 registered performance recorded females - A good

base for selection.

✓ Since its foundation in 1991, Storth Oaks has always mated heifers to calve at 2

years old. All calves are weighed and recorded at birth.

✓ All animals are DNA sire verified to guarantee the bull is by the sire nominated. ✓ AI is used extensively with all females having at least two cycles of AI and some

three cycles. This enables us to source the very best genetics to improve the herd and the herds of our customers.

✓ Fertility is of paramount importance which means selecting bulls from calving ease

sires with strong fertility attributes.

! The Storth Oaks aim is to improve the profitability of our commercial customers. If

the economics of prime beef production are not lifted by genetic improvement we will lose more land to alternative more profitable land uses.

! In the 2016 sale catalogue we have a stunning line up of AngusPure index sires you

wont find anywhere else in New Zealand.

! AngusPure index has a weighting for marbling while also selecting animals suitable to go into a self replacing herd. Marbling attributes cost nothing to put into you genetic selections so why not have it? All research from the USA and the rest of the world suggests that Marbling is the single most important indicator to ensuring beef is consistently tender, juicy and has good flavour. ! Great emphasis is put on temperament or disposition. Calves are yard weaned and introduced to a high fibre straw/silage mix to make sure the rumen is fully developed to maximise efficiency. ! All bulls are fertility and semen tested independently prior to sale ! All bulls are independently Beef Class structurally assessed. ! Storth Oaks delivers bulls free to the North Island. ! BVD & EBL negative and have been BVD vaccinated. ! Bulls come with a 3 year structure and fertility guarantee (not caused by injury, disease, or poor management.) see sale information for more details. ! All bulls are clear of all known genetic defects. ! Storth Oaks has a 5 Star rating for Completeness of Recording - meaning that

we provide as much information as possible to Breedplan and rate at the very top level.

We welcome you to Storth Oaks and hope you are pleased with the bulls we have this year. If at any time you would like to discuss certain genetics and they may work for you or if you have any other beef or bull matter to discuss please call us. We are available to sit down with you and assist in reviewing your breeding objectives and how to make the most gains possible. Also how you can take advantage of industry signals for premium beef production. May your fires always burn great steaks!

Beef Class Structural Assessment System

Structural problems in cattle have a substantial effect on both the reproductive and growth performance of a beef herd. It is widely recognized that structural problems in a sire have detrimental effects on conception rates, calving patterns and thus profitability. Similarly, females with inadequate structural characteristics are more prone to weaning lighter calves or conceiving later in the breeding season than their more functional counterparts. These structural problems are filtered through the supply chain resulting in reduced income for the producer and thus reducing the overall productivity of the New Zealand Beef Industry. The current trend for improving consistency and quality of product has shifted producers focus, towards selecting seedstock on carcase and growth genetic traits (EBV’s). Whilst this selection has been, and will continue to be pivotal in developing the New Zealand beef industry, we must not forget the fundamentals of livestock breeding. Storth Oaks is continually expanding their structural assessment program in order to optimise soundness and performance in their stock. The program involves an independent assessor analysing the structural composition of the herd on an individual basis. Storth Oaks is implementing a annual program of assessing all of it’s breeding stock and sale bulls. All animal’s deemed inadequate will be culled. Understanding the Beef Class Structural Assessment For docility – 1 is Docile to the point of touching the animal, 3 is less ideal (restless) and 5 - aggressive. (Scores of 1 and 2 are preferred). For traits scored 1-9: • 4 and 6 show slight variation from idea but this includes most animals. Any animal scoring 4 and 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program. • 3 and 7 show greater variation, but would be acceptable in most commercial breeding programs, but seed stock producers should be wary. • 2 and 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked at closely before purchasing. • 1 and 9 should not be catalogued and are considered culls. John Hammond 06-3858040 Accredited Structural Assessor #5021 Assessed all Storth Oaks sale bulls on 11/4/16

$  Indexes  Explained  Self Replacing Index "The Angus Self-replacing Index" ranks bulls on their ability to generate profit (profit per cow mated) in a herd situation in which some females are retained for breeding and surplus females, along with all males, are slaughtered. The main drivers of profit addressed by the Index include (in order of economic importance): - Direct and Maternal Calving Ease - Growth - Meat Yield - Cow Survival - Finishing Ability - Fertility - Cow Efficiency In short, selection on the Index is expected to favour production of a cowherd with excellent reproductive efficiency, rearing progeny with moderate-to-high growth rates and high yielding carcasses. Comparing the lifetime profitability of two bulls: The following example illustrates how potential differences in lifetime profitability can be approximated between bulls with different Indexes. These estimates of value differences may be conservative. Two bulls with Self-replacing Indexes of $40 and $20 are mated to genetically similar cows. If each bull mates 200 cows during its lifetime, the first bull will generate $2000 ($(40-20)/2 x 200) more profit during its lifetime than the second bull (the $20 profit advantage must be divided by 2 because a bull only passes half his genes on to each of his progeny).

Ease of Calving Index The Angus Ease of Calving Index ranks bulls on their ability to generate profit (profit per cow mated) when crossed with dairy cows and heifers to produce dairy beef progeny.

While calving ease is by far the most important profit driver in the Index, growth and to a lesser extent meat yield also contribute. This Index is also a reasonable indicator of a bull's suitability for use over beef heifers.

DNA of all SIRES From 2008 those calves whose sires that registry do not receive DNA for will not be registered. This includes all AI, ET and natural mated calves, so please make sure when you buy semen, have ET work done or use natural mating (remember especially the yearlings) make sure that the seller has supplied a DNA sample to the NZAA for verification or you yourself have taken samples of all the sires used and lodged them at the office.

AngusPure Index A third Breed Object index for NZ Angus has been created, to be called the AngusPure Index. The production system described and modeled for this index is the same as for the Self Replacing index (i.e. what the top financial 10% of commercial beef cow farmers are achieving) but will tend to highlight higher marbling sires with progeny turn-off at around 16-17 months of age. Below is the EBV emphasis of the new index.

Understanding Angus Group Breedplan EBV’s Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are based on the combined analysis of all pedigree and performance records on the New Zealand and Australian Angus databases. EBVs can be used to compare the estimated genetic merit of animals for a range of growth, fertility and carcass traits. Only March 2009 Australasian Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or Interim EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between Angus herds.

Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's senetic merit for that trait.

Accuracy An accuracy is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low.

Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving ease (CE) scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughter's calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

Birth GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate easier calving and increased growth after birth. BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

Fertility SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. SS is also positively associated with female fertilitv.

Growth MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter's milking ability as it affects the 200 and 400 day weight of their calves. 200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age.

Carcase CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days. EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the I2ll3th rib site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. RIB: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the l2ll3th rib in a

300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. RUMP: Rump Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the P8 site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a

percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) .is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the l2ll3'" rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

The Australasian Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values contained in this Sale Catalogue were compiled by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) from data supplied by the breeders. Neither the New Zealand Angus Association, the Angus Society of Australia nor the ABRI oversee or audit the collection of this data.

IT PAYS TO CHECK BOTH THEIR BLOODLINES.

When you’re buying insurance to cover a big investment like a bull, make sure you choose an insurer with the right breeding. FMG has spent over 100 years looking after the insurance needs of farmers, so we understand the value of bull cover from the fall of the hammer. We also deal directly with you from the time you take out a policy, to the time you make a claim. It’s not something all insurers do, so it pays to think twice about who you’re insuring with. To get instant bull cover, call 0800 366 466 or talk to us on sale day. Please note this is only a summary of our products and services and is subject to our specific product documentation. For full details, you should refer to the relevant policy wordings.

We’re here for the good of the country. BCG2 FMG0307 A
