Partial Saturation in Compacted Soil Edited by Domenico Gallipoli, School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK Description: Géotechnique Symposium in Print 2011: The theme of this symposium blends together two areas of research which relate to the effects of suction and partial saturation on soil behaviour and the study of compaction as a method of soil improvement. The recurring interest in these areas of research, together with the recent increase in the number of international conferences dedicated to unsaturated soils, is a clear indication of the continued relevance of this theme to the geotechnical profession. Contributions to this symposium show that recent developments of experimental techniques and modelling tools have enhanced our understanding of unsaturated soil mechanics and have resulted in the formulation of conceptual material frameworks that are applicable to different categories of soils. Nevertheless, the impact of such advances on engineering practice is yet to be seen. The research included in this book can definitely contribute to closing the gap between research and practice by facilitating dissemination of our current knowledge of unsaturated soil mechanics. This knowledge has the potential to enhance the sustainability of current building practices by extending the use of locally sourced soils and, in general, to improve design of earth structures with consequent gains in safety and cost. Contents: 1. Editorial: partial saturation in compacted soils 2. Benchmark of constitutive models for unsaturated soils 3. Benchmark of experimental techniques for measuring and controlling suction 4. An insight into the water retention properties of compacted clayey soils 5. Hydromechanical behaviour of compacted granular expansive mixtures: experimental and constitutive study 6. Experimental observations of the stress regime in unsaturated compacted clay when laterally confined 7. Hydromechanical behaviour of a heterogeneous compacted soil: experimental observations and modelling 8. Modelling the response of Lechage earth and rockfill dam 9. Physical modelling of wettinginduced collapse in embankment base 10. Effects of the maximum soil aggregates size and cyclic wettingdrying on the stiffness of a limetreated clayey soil 11. Some aspects of the behaviour of compacted soils along wetting paths

Shock Transmission Units in Construction Dinesh Patel and Beile Yin (editor) Description: Recent earthquakes in many countries of the world have confirmed the potential for very large seismic events that until now were not forecast. The level of disturbance and destruction of highways and bridges as well as life, suffered during these dominant earthquakes were far greater than structural engineers and their associated design codes had predicted. One important lesson that has been learnt is that it is vital that bridges, which connect major transportation routes, must continue to function after an earthquake. . In the quest of this realization, new technologies and design efforts by engineers have resulted in the development of seismic protection systems, which include Shock Transmission Unit (STU) together with various seismic isolation and energy mitigation devices. In the only book to provide independent, non-proprietary information on the design and application of STUs, the author offers information on a wide range of different applications, including new and existing highway and railway bridges, as well as non-bridge structures such as nuclear power plants. Illustrated case studies included throughout, Shock Transmission Units in Construction is written by a proven expert in STUs and the only world authority on the subject.

Sustainable Water Delivering Sustainable Infrastructure series Charles Ainger (Visiting Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development, Cambridge University Affiliate, Commonwealth Business School Sustainable Development Consultant, MWH); Richard Fenner (University of Cambridge) Description: Part of a new series of practical handbooks aimed at providing practising engineers with an understanding of sustainability principles and solutions. To be useful for practitioners, the series sets sustainability concepts within well-known engineering management processes of planning, designing and delivering infrastructure. The first volume sets out a framework of fundamental principles, methodologies and approaches, with numerous practical examples from real civil engineering projects. The subsequent volumes apply these principles to sector-specific contexts, in this case water. Each book is written in such a way as to be readable independently of the set, but reference is made back to the guiding philosophy and structure set out in the introductory volume.

Contents: Preface 1. Introduction – and how to use the book 2. The sustainability context and challenge for water and wastewater examples 3. Integrated water (catchment) management examples 4. Water Resources examples - Hybrid example of new build reservoir in SE England (based on Cow Green/Abingdon); 5. Water treatment examples 6. Water Distribution examples 7. Wastewater Collection (and urban drainage) examples 8. Wastewater and Sludge Treatment and discharge examples - Example of recycling into water supply (Hanningfield Reservoir) 9. Industrial and Energy water and wastewater examples 10. Agricultural water use and pollution examples 11. Worked Examples for Buildings: EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes Edited by Keerthi Ranasinghe Description: Worked Examples for Buildings: EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes provides extensive worked examples for the design of typical everyday building elements and assemblages (e.g. portal frames). The book covers the basis of design, loading, concrete, steel, composite steel and concrete, timber, masonry and foundation designs. The book also provides examples of designing the structure of complete buildings (e.g. a halls of residence, hotels etc). Unlike most Eurocode guides, which only cover individual codes relevant to specific elements (e.g. concrete), this book takes a through-project approach, referring to multiple Eurocodes in order to reflect the real process of designing a complex structure.

Contents: 1. Basis of design and actions on structures 2. Concrete 3. Steel 4. Composite Steel and Concrete 5. Timber 6. Masonry 7. Foundations Readership: Practising civil and structural engineering
