The Met takes inspiration from Susan Sontag’s seminal essay “Notes on ‘Camp’” for its latest Costume Institute show, celebrating artifice, humor and exaggeration in fashion. Curator Andrew Bolton traces camp from its origins in Versailles through to the modern day, with ensembles by Gucci, Jeremy Scott, Bob Mackie, Rei Kawakubo and Alexander McQueen, among others. “Manet and Modern Beauty”

at the Art Institute of Chicago

Manet is a perennial crowd pleaser, but this exhibit focuses on his later works, including small but lively watercolors, large-scale multifigure paintings like In the Conservatory and Boating, and portraits of women like Jeanne Demarsy and Méry Laurent, represented as personifications of spring and fall. Joan Miró - Birth of the World

Drawn from MoMA’s unrivaled collection of Miró’s work, augmented by several key loans, this exhibition situates The Birth of the World in relation to other major works by the artist. It presents some 60 paintings, works on paper, prints, illustrated books, and objects—made primarily between 1920, the year of Miró’s first, catalytic trip to Paris, and the early 1950s, when his unique visual language became internationally renowned—to shed new light on the development of his poetic process and pictorial universe. The Venice Biennale

The theme of the 58th biennale is the (mistranslated) Chinese proverb “May you live in interesting times,” with pavilions featuring artists from some 120 different countries.
