Downtown Newnan Welcomes New Retailers and Two Dessert Shops BY JONATHAN DOCKERY

Rock Salt Ice Cream Parlor and The Hug Box

As you stroll through downtown Newnan during the Spring Art Walk, you may have noticed several business openings. In the South, spring welcomes warmer weather, plentiful blooms, along with smiling faces that invite the ideal opportunity for new business. Eco-friendly USA shop, The Hug Box opened a brick and mortar shop last summer at 13 West Washington Street which features local artisans. Shop owner Vicki Sanders tells us, “We allow customers to send and fill a hug box which sends a hug when you can’t be there, you support the earth along with bringing happiness.” A new business, Rock Salt Ice Cream Parlor, will soon open in the former space of Cookie Barr. Construction is currently underway inside the business at 8 East Washington Street.

WELCOME From page 1

Newnan Mercantile found its new home at 11 Greenville Street, bringing a bright, welcoming store that features home decor and furniture.

Southern Heritage Co. and Frio’s

Local business Southern Heritage Co. from Senioa, Georgia, opened its new location next to Newnan Mercantile in the beginning of 2019 and celebrated its grand opening during Art Walk. Also, coming soon is a new popsicle shop, Frio’s Gourmet Pops, in the former building of The Poppyseed, which recently closed. Frio’s has been popping up all around Newnan with samples. Its nearest location can be found at 120 Bull Street in LaGrange, Georgia.

Leaf and Bean and Finley’s Boutique

Newnan’s Leaf & Bean recently added new benches and front area to the coffee shop. Manager Tiffany tells us, “We needed more space for our awesome customers.” Just next door Ace Beer Growlers has added fresh butchered meats, their own line called, “COW EATA Meat Company.” Take a brisk walk down Jefferson Street and visit Finley’s Boutique. The shop recently opened in the former space of Mayfair Children’s Shop at 7 Jefferson Street. More exciting things are in the works for downtown Newnan. Stay tuned to The City Menus for updates. Seventh annual RACE for the Orphans to be held in May

Runners from the 2018 RACE for the Orphans take off from the starting line.

BY JEFFREY CULLEN-DEAN

T

he seventh annual RACE for the Orphans will be held Saturday, May 4, at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the 5K race go toward grants to help nine families from Coweta and surrounding counties adopt children domestically and internationally. “Adoption costs anywhere from $30,00040,000,” said Kelly Preston, director of Race for Orphans. “It’s a very expensive endeavor. There’s a lot of governmental fees if you’re

adopting internationally.” Preston said, in addition to the fees, families also face travel expenses. “There’s a lot of expense if you’re involved in adoption,” she said. According to Preston, there are more than 150 million orphans worldwide and half a million in the United States. Preston said she and her husband started the race after their own experience adopting a child.

“My husband and I are runners and wanted to help others in the area offset the cost,” she said. Last year, more than 800 runners participated and the event raised more than $43,000. “The more participants we have, the more money we can give each family, so I’m hoping we can give each family a substantial amount of money,” Preston said. The race will feature a competition among the local schools. The school with the high-

est number of participants will earn a trophy and a $300 Academy Sports gift card. Second place will win a $200 gift card, and third place will win a $100 gift card. The 5K race begins at 9 a.m. and costs $25. In addition to the 5K, there is a Tot Trot and a 1-mile fun run for $10 and $15 respectively. The Tot Trot begins at 8:15 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. For more information on the race and to register, go to www.racefortheorphans.org .

E

very April, communities across the United States come together to honor and support victims of crime and to increase public awareness about victim’s rights. This year the Victim Assistance Program in District Attorney Herb Cranford’s Coweta office will be observing National Crime Victims’ Rights Week by hosting the seventh annual Red Cross

Blood Drive. The event will be held on Friday, April 12 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This year the Coweta DA’s Office announced that the drive will be held inside the Justice Center in Cranford Hall. The Justice Center is located at 72 Greenville St. in Newnan. Donors will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag.

The Victim Assistance Program encourages everyone in the community to come to donate blood and also learn more about its program. To register early, visit redcrossblood. org and use sponsor key CCDA, or call the district attorney’s office at 770-2547300 and speak to Allison Boone or LaDonna Arnold. Walk-ins are also welcome on the day

of the blood drive. District Attorney Herb Cranford said the victim advocates work hard each year to put on a successful Blood Drive. “We would not be able to do it without the help of our entire office,” Cranford said. “Each staff member has a task that really takes a load off of the advocates. We appreciate all of the staff and the great team we have at our Coweta office.”

Senoia named Georgia’s Safest City

“ B E E ” INFORMED!

12 MONTHS

COUNSE / ATL HOLLYWOOD

BY CLAY NEELY

T

he city of Senoia was recently named Georgia’s Safest City in the fifth annual Safest Cities report by SafeWise. Senoia jumped from No. 4 in 2018 to No. 1 for 2019. Senoia pulled the top spot thanks to its low property crime numbers— just 39 total compared to Summerville’s 48. For Senoia Police Chief Jason Edens, it's a direct result of the hard work of dedicated officers, coupled with the great community of Senoia and the continued support of the city manager, mayor and council. “We are very proud of that designation,” Edens said. "The challenge moving forward will be to maintain our level of service as our community continues to grow and, as always, growth can bring new challenges but I’m confident that our officers will rise to the occasion.” Community policing is at the core of

keeping a great relationship between the public and its citizens, according to City Manager Harold Simmons. Because Senoia has a unique downtown, having police visible allows the public to have the lines of communication open, Simmons said. As a result, he feels people see police as friends – and that makes a difference. "When you can sit on the corner and talk to business owners and they know you by name, it changes how you operate,” Simmons said. Simmons said it all goes back to being living examples of community players. “Folks don’t just put on a uniform and come to work behind tinted windows,” he said. "We are out in the community and the biggest thing we have going for us is people knowing our officer's names. It's a mutual respect that has grown."

Senoia City Council: Pylant Street project to move forward

BY JEFFREY CULLEN-DEAN

T

he Senoia City Council recently approved a series of proposals to realign the intersection of Highway 16 and Pylant Street. The road realignment project has been in development and delayed for several years. “For several years the city has worked with GDOT to realign the intersection of Highway 16 and Pylant Street improvements and a bridge replacement,” said Harold Simmons, city manager for Senoia. The project will adjust the end of Pylant Street so that the road connects with Highway 16 at a right angle instead of the current sharp angle. After the construction, a remnant of Pylant Street will

be used as parking spaces for the Marimac Lakes park. “You’ll have to come down 16 travelling east, and there will be a turning lane allowing you turn left onto those parking lots or continue on to the new bridge,” Simmons said. The city council gave approval for Jack Burnside, an NEPA specialist, to assist with the construction and environmental phases of the project. Burnside has previously assisted as a project manager for several years, said Simmons. According to Jeff Fisher, mayor of Senoia, the project was delayed a year by the Environmental Protection Division and the project’s impact on nearby wetlands.

Wood Inc. was approved by the city council to provide administrative services and material testing for the road project. The company has been used before by the city for other projects, said Simmons. Additionally, Piedmont Paving was approved for the Pylant Street project. The company won the lowest bid out of six competitors, the city manager said. “This project is a little over a year in delay,” Fisher said. “We had to go back and redo some stuff along with the county. This is by far our most dangerous of intersections, and this will come to fruition eventually and we’ll be able to get this off our streets.”

Jesus Christ is not some powerless, dead historical figure. He is alive. He is present. If you are thirsty, He is the Living Water. If you are hungry, He is the Bread of Life. He protects. He intercedes. He fills us up. He satisfies our souls. He is awesome in strength and mighty in power. He is the Lamb of God. He is the Lion of Judah. He is the Indescribable Gift. He is our Great High Priest. He is our Mediator. He is our Hope. He is our Peace. He is our Burden Bearer. He is our Good Shepherd. He is our Refuge. He is our Strength. He is our Rock. He is our Sword. He is our Shield. He is our Way Maker. He is our Miracle Worker. He is our Wonderful Counselor. He is our Everlasting Father. He is Lord of lords. He is King of kings. There is no one beside Him, no one above Him. There is none like Him. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble. He is great and greatly to be praised! If we refuse to praise Him, the rocks will pipe up in our place (Luke 19:40). Stir up the embers within, and blaze forth His glory!

Newnan pig knocked off his pedestal BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL

Gene Morris of the Southtowne Collision Center is repairing a fiberglass pig that was struck by a truck in downtown Newnan.

ne of downtown Newnan’s fiberglass animals got a little banged up in a tango with a tractor trailer, but before long, this little piggy should be good as new. The fiberglass animals were created as a fundraiser for the children’s museum as well as a public art project. The pig, named “1919,” is sponsored by the Newnan Country Club. He sat on the corner of Greenville and East Broad Streets, where about a week ago he was allegedly struck by the tractor trailer. The crash knocked the pig off its pedestal, broke its leg, and chipped its ears and snout. The damage was discovered Tuesday when Bette Hickman and Pamela Prange of ChildrenConnect Museum PHOTO COURTESY CHILDRENCONNECT MUSEUM were inspecting all of the fiberglass 1919 the pig suffered a broken leg and some bangs and animals in preparation for a scavenger bruises to his ears and snout. hunt planned for May. NTC presents ‘The Drawer Boy’ April 11, 8 p.m. This touching, and often hilarious, story follows Miles, a young actor from the big city who moves in with Morgan and Angus, aging bachelor farmers, to do research for a new play. Intrigued by the puzzling An-

gus, who suffered brain damage during World War II, and gently tormented by Morgan because he’s a “city boy,” Miles includes an overheard story in his play and unwittingly reawakens Angus’s memory. “The Drawer Boy” is an elegant testimony to the transcendent nature of fiction and the healing power of truth.
