McCoury Music

CUMBERLAND TIMES-NEWS

DEL YEAH!

DelFest is held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland. It originated from the desire to create a family-friendly music festival celebrating the rich legacy of McCoury Music while creating a forum for world-class musical collaborations and to showcase fresh new talent with a down-home feeling. Produced in association with High Sierra Music, the 10th Annual DelFest will again offer a quality festival experience stamped with the unique McCoury touch. Personally chosen by Del, the fairgrounds serve as the perfect location for DelFest. The site is nestled along the Potomac River in the scenic Appalachian Mountains, and organizers like that the fairgrounds are convenient to four major airports and easily reached by rail or road. The city of Cumberland is also a great, host offering multiple hotel options, a charming downtown and great amenities including biking, a steam train engine and museum and some top-notch dining. In addition to traditional stage sets by world-class artists, attendees can expect to see one-of-a-kind collaborations, special guest sit-ins, various tributes to Del McCoury and his musical legacy, intimate appearances, unique “playshops” and informal workshops where the emphasis will be on performance rather than instruction and late night indoor performances and picking sessions. Delfest will be immediately preceded by a three-day Music Academy hosted by The Travelin’ McCourys and other all star players.

Lineup includes ‘Del and Friends’ set, Dierks Bentley GREG LARRY TIMES-NEWS STAFF WRITER

CUMBERLAND — The daily lineup for the 10th annual DelFest music festival includes Dierks Bentley to appear Saturday, May 27. Named for the festival’s founder Del McCoury, DelFest, held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds, features top-tier talent in the bluegrass, Americana and roots music genres. The four-day festival, held Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, will feature Trey Anastasio playing two sets on Friday evening, May 26. Saturday will feature a performance by Bela Fleck and Chris Thile followed by Railroad Earth. Dierks Bentley will then take the stage, performing with the Travelin’ McCourys at 10:15 p.m. “We try to make it a variety,” said Del McCoury. McCoury spoke to the Times-News

during a recent visit to Cumberland. “Each year we try to add different acts — that way people will get something new each time.” The festival features three stages, the Grandstand Stage, Potomac Stage and the Music Hall indoor stage. Sunday, May 28, on the Grandstand Stage, Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives will perform at 2 p.m. with Government Mule, featuring Warren Haynes, closing the festival’s outdoor offerings with a 10:15 p.m. performance. Haynes was the longtime lead guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, which he joined in 1989. He performed with the Allman Brothers until the band called it quits in 2014. The festival also features daily performances by the Del McCoury Band. “No matter where I go and play all over the country, there

are people (that) come up and say, ‘We’re going to DelFest again this year,’” McCoury said. “No matter how far away they are from, they are promising to be there.” The event begins Thursday, May 25, at 3:45 with the annual Soundcheck Set by the Del McCoury Band, followed by a performance by the winner of the DelFest Academy Band Scramble. At 4:45 p.m. the band Dead Man Winter takes the stage, followed by River Whyless and The Steep Canyon Rangers. The Del McCoury Band will cap off the day with a 10:15 p.m. show. Joining the band that night will be Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, Preservation Horns of New Orleans, Jon Fishman of Phish and Ronnie Bowman for a special Del McCoury Band & Friends set in honor of the festival’s 10th anniversary. Late-night shows inside the Music Hall begin at 12:15 a.m.

Local band Grand Ole’ Ditch will play Friday at 11 a.m. in the Music Hall and again Saturday at 10:45 a.m. on the Potomac Stage. Cris Jacobs of Reisterstown will perform Friday at 12:50 p.m. in the Music Hall and Satur-

day on the Potomac Stage at 1:45 p.m. Bill Valentine, Allegany County commissioner, said local interest has continued to grow. “I think over the years, too ... one of the nice things is ... the first couple years, I doubt if 5 percent of the attendance

was from Allegany County,” Valentine said. “The people here just weren’t going. It was something different and they didn’t want to get involved. “Now you go out there, and especially with one-day ticket holders, there is a large percentage that is a local crowd. That’s a good thing. It shows there is local support for it and they know what all is happening out there.” Other performers at DelFest include Noam Pikelny, Sierra Hull, Donna the Buffalo, Dre’s Gospel Collective, Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon, Broomestix, Red Knuckles, Sara Watkins, Billy Stings, Head for the Hills, The Gibson Brothers, Dead Winter Carpenters, Joe Craven, Ghost of Paul Revere, Kitchen Dwellers and the Jeff Austin Band. DelFest typically attracts more than 30,000 people for the four-day event. The full schedule is available at DelFest.com.

DEL YEAH! FESTIVAL FLASHBACK

McCoury: Bonds key to booking DelFest

CUMBERLAND TIMES-NEWS

GREG LARRY TIMES-NEWS STAFF WRITER

CUMBERLAND — Ronnie McCoury says relationships are key to attracting talent to DelFest. “It’s always fun to try to figure it out who is playing,” said McCoury, a musician and son of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, the festival’s namesake. For the past 10 years, dozens of top-tier bluegrass and Americana music acts have traveled to Cumberland on Memorial Day weekend to perform at the festival. Ronnie McCoury, his brother Robbie, father Del and other members of the McCoury family help in booking bands for RONNIE MCCOURY DelFest. Roy Carter, principle with High Sierra Music, also plays a large roll in scheduling talent. In addition to managing the festival, Carter operates a bluegrass festival in Quincy, California, known as the High Sierra Music Festival. “He (Roy) has had the High Sierra festival for more than 20 years,” said Ronnie McCoury. “He knows how to do it and what he’s doing.” The High Sierra Music Festival, in its 26th year, began in 1991. Ronnie McCoury said the family talks with Carter to discuss booking acts. “We talk about it with Roy and everyone has input on it,” McCoury said. “There are a lot of people you want to get, but they can’t make it.” McCoury said relationships play a big role. Dierks Bentley, who will make his second festival appearance this year, knew the McCourys before he made it in music. “I played with Dierks when he was in college,” McCoury said. “He really appreciates my dad. We used to play at a place each Tuesday. Someone with a magazine asked Dierks what his five top albums were and he picked dad’s album, “The Cold Hard Facts,” as number one. Dierks loves country and bluegrass and he’s a good friend of the family.” McCoury said many acts want to play DelFest and it can be hard to decide who to book. “It is so hard,” McCoury said. “After 10 years, you have to figure out who can come back. It is a matter of picking and choosing. There are so many talented performers out there.” McCoury said Carter does a lot of the booking and negotiating pay. “A lot of it is with our partner, Roy (Carter). It’s his job to actually book the talent,” McCoury said. “When we partnered with Roy, we knew it was a good partnership, and Roy is the guy who talks about the money. I’m glad I don’t have to do that part. He does the negotiating.” McCoury said fans also have input on booking talent. “We hear from the fans and they will say ‘Why don’t you have so and so, or how about getting this act?’” A large reason for bands wanting to play DelFest is the high regard held for Del McCoury. “A majority of people are wearing (Carter’s) phone out because they want to come,” Ronnie McCoury said. “A lot of that is my father. It’s their feelings toward him.” McCoury said a key element is often the travel schedule of the acts. “It has to work in their travel schedule,” he said. “It can be if they are near there at that time, you know? Are they on the East Coast? It is a lot of figuring.” McCoury said the artists typically have a manager and an agent. Booking the act has to be agreed upon by all the parties. “You have to make sure everyone is on the same page,” he said.
