BEING PRESENT Have you ever experienced a moment of pure joy when you’ve dropped your inhibitions, seized the moment, and danced like there is no tomorrow?

LIFE AND TIMES OF PALTI: What started off as a holiday romance turned into a fascinating story that could be fodder for a movie script. Palti, an abandoned dog named after Paltinis—a mountain resort in Transylvania, Romania, is where they first met. The friendly pup stole Ruzvin’s heart as she went to great lengths to find him a home, and then ended up bringing him all the way from Romania to Dubai, and finally to their home in east Auckland. See pages 8-9 for full story. Cover shot by Wayne Martin.

That’s what I witnessed on Sunday evening at a community music event organised at Uxbridge by the Peter Young, Howick Local Board member and founder of the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Association. There were a series of music events through the afternoon but the one I attended was the evening session of Karaoke—a prelude to the 175th Anniversary celebrations of the Fencibles arriving in Howick. It was amusing to note that the well planned event started without an introduction as Ben Kwok, a music enthusiast picked up the mic and belted out the lyrics of a foot-tapping Achy Breaky Heart. He asked people to join in, and in a blink of an eyelid, half the audience was on the dance floor! No second invitation needed.

It was so refreshing to see people wear their enthusiasm on their sleeve and have unadulterated fun as music bridged the gap in diverse communities that had come together that evening. It was easy to see the power of music, a connector that broke barriers as guests connected with the universal language of rhythm and beat. A rare treat watching everyone being present in the moment. Of course, no one was judging! The surprise of the evening was a bubbly Labour Party List MP Naisi Chen singing Greatest Love of All. Equally sporting was ACT Party MP Damien Smith, as he did a rendition of Dean Martin’s Ain’t (love) a kick in the head, while Howick Local Board member David Collings sang When you say nothing at all! The evening ended with guests spontaneously joining in the pop anthem We are the World led by Rev Richard Waugh, chair of the committee that marks 175 years since the Fencibles first arrived on the shores of Howick in November 1847. The lyrics resonated with everyone, in the year that celebrates the glorious

past and present of Howick ward. Talking of connectors, in this issue we have featured our adorable four-legged canine companions that speak the language of love. From pampered pooches to some funny yarns about man’s best friend as well an incredible tale of love at first sight with a fluffball—a pet treat awaits you. Whether you are planning a trip overseas, a weekend in Christchurch, or just a drive to Clevedon, we have some ideas in there that you may want to steal! We have two new columns, Instinctual Parent and Dental Planet, in this issue. That apart, we take you on a quick garden tour of Shirley and Dennis Peat’s cottage style garden. And then there is more! Go on, grab a cuppa, relax and enjoy this month’s special offering for you.

MAKING CONNECTIONS A popular housing trend these days is of multigenerational homes that co-house two to three families with two fully independent kitchens and living areas, said Nigel McKenna, CEO and founder of Templeton Group about the recent shift that leans towards multiple incomes to service a mortgage. At the evening to announce the building of a connecting road that will save up to 12 minutes off commute time from Flatbush by connecting Michael Bosher Way to Redoubt Road, guests were given a quick preview of the ecological

improvement at Bremner RidgeTempleton, and the creation of amenities in an open space network. “This section of new road, though short, was critical to unlocking the potential of the Bremner Ridge site,” said McKenna at the event attended by Howick Local Board members Adele White, John Spiller, Peter Young and David Collings, Takanini MP Dr Anae Leavasa and list MP Naisi Chen. “Successful developments are based on location, access amenity and community. With this road now

complete, Bremner Ridge offers all of these, which is why we’ve already been able to sell 93 percent of all lots,” he said. With the elevation tamed, Bremner Ridge now affords views across the city to Rangitoto, North Head, the Sky Tower and, in the distance, the Waitakere ranges. The 350 million development of Bremner Ridge and the adjacent project, Fairburn represents over 500 lots in total in Flat Bush. Talking about preserving the suburb’s heritage, McKenna explained, that once upon a time

Major Daniel Bremmer who fought the Gallipoli Campaign and the Battle of Somme owned the cottage at the site. “However, a fire reduced the cottage to a mere chimney. Having contributed his life to peace and prosperity, what we enjoy today, we decided to name the area after him,” said McKenna. “We will also restore the cottage that belonged to him which was burnt down due to a fire. It will serve as a community café. We faithfully replicate its iconic shape and preserving it as part of the suburb’s heritage,” said McKenna.

FROM ROMANIA TO NEW ZEALAND

Finding Palti

Truth is often stranger than fiction. FARIDA MASTER talks to Ruzvin Elavia about the incredible tale of Palti, an abandoned dog from the mountains that stole her heart.

When Ruzvin planned a family holiday to Romania, little did she realise that she would fall hopelessly in love. The east Auckland resident, who had moved from Auckland to Dubai at the time, says that the first time she set eyes on a furball in Paltinis—a mountain resort in Transylvania, Romania— it was love at first sight. “The day we reached our hotel, this happy puppy appeared out of nowhere and rolled over, for a belly rub! He had a collar on that night. I remember thinking, it must be such joy to have him around,” says Ruzvin of their first encounter with the pup, at the highest resort in Romania, a popular winter destination. “He appeared again, the next morning eagerly waiting outside the hotel doors, wagging his fluffy tail, following us around on our forest walks. The next day I noticed he was without a collar. I kept a watch on him and decided to call him Paltinis, (Palti for short) after the mountain range we were at.” Ruzvin soon found out that it was quite common for pets to be abandoned near the hotel as food was abundant near the kitchen. “It broke my heart as he was out in the cold. The temperatures were dropping to minus zero. Each morning I would watch him trotting beside horses or chasing birds,” she fondly recalls. Ruzvin discovered that though the hotel had a ‘no animal policy’, the hotel personnel would secretly let the pup sleep in the space between www.eastlife.co.nz

the two automatic doors. In no time, the family got attached to Palti. “On the day we were leaving, we had to tear ourselves away from him. As our bags were being loaded into the car, I held onto him, silently letting him know, that no matter what - I would make sure he was alright. He tried hard to get into our car. I’ve never felt so helpless as little Palti followed the car as long as he could. “The plan was to drive via the Transfagarasan Highway from Sibiu to Bucharest, one of the most beautiful motorable roads in the world, but with such heavy hearts the seven hours felt like 70!” recalls Ruzvin. Once in Bucharest, Ruzvin contacted a Romanian guide, who asked her to call Animal Life Sibiu, run by volunteers. “Our flight was scheduled the next day. There was no way we could extend our stay,” says Ruzvin who reluctantly boarded the flight to Dubai.

A couple of days later, a volunteer was assigned. Ruzvin called the hotel reception to make sure Palti was around when the volunteer arrived. Palti was surreptitiously whisked away to the staff quarters that night.

him immediately. She was firm with the hotel to not let Palti out of sight. Happy to oblige, they placed him in the centre of the reception area and sent photographs of the friendly pup, assuring her that he was safe.

“Everything was according to plan till Palti was let out for his morning job. Next, I had a frantic call saying they couldn’t find him. The assigned volunteer had reached the hotel, and Palti was nowhere in sight. Someone mentioned they spotted a dog of his description walking alongside a couple of German tourists who had just checked out of the hotel.

“Never have I known such relief!’ smiles Ruzvin. “Palti was moved to Animal Life. We put an advert in the local papers mentioning he was found and asked the owner to please come forward. With the animal shelter being full up, we had him stay at a foster home. In the three months he was there, no one came forward to claim or adopt him.”

“Upon my insistence, and totally against the hotel policy, the hotel staff rang the guests to check if Palti was with them. They confirmed he was trekking alongside them all the way down to Sibiu, and then happily carried on, on his own. After a long wait till 11pm that night, the volunteer left. A thunderstorm ensued.”

Finally, it was fate that brought him to Dubai. On Feb 3, 2017, Palti entered his new home with his Romanian passport duly stamped. His travel was a very expensive affair with professional handlers involved in the process.

Two days later, she received an international call from Animal Life in Romania!

Completely beside herself thinking she had lost him for good, Ruzin went to great lengths to ensure that posters were put up in the village announcing an award to anyone who found Palti.

“I explained to them that there was an abandoned or lost pup on a mountain, 30kms away from Sibiu. I wanted him taken to safety. The organisation was run by volunteers, and not all of them own a car. They said they had to find a volunteer with a car, and determination to drive up a steep mountain,” narrates Ruzvin.

As luck would have it, Alex, one of the boys from the hotel who promised to look for him with a friend, spotted Palti in the village looking like a rag doll, drenched to the bone. They bundled him up in a jacket and put him in the car. Ruzvin begged the volunteer to make another trip up the mountain to collect

“He was a little frightened initially but after looking into my eyes for about 20 minutes, we both fell asleep, with his paw in my hand.” Ruzvin requested her boss for three-day paw-ternity leave to help settle in the new baby of the house. Paltinis was two then. He is eight now, and happily settled in east Auckland as the family moved back to New Zealand. “Never have we known such love and joy,” says Ruzvin. “We’ve been truly blessed and happy to have been adopted as a family by this fluffball of joy. He continues to melt hearts.” eastlife | june 2022 |

AMY CARTER –

she’s jammin’! When the going gets tough, some turn to jelly; others make it, as JON RAWLINSON discovered. Just as cooks served their country on the home front by feeding the troops during wartime, Amy Carter has put a sweet spin on a sour situation. Distributing jars of her ‘You Make Me Jelly’ preserves through a roadside pantry, she has sown the seeds for a new business born of an old family recipe.

Raised on an organic vegetable farm, Amy has long appreciated the value of freshly grown ingredients. With a background in customer service—handy for any entrepreneur—she currently works in HR, when not ‘currantly’ working with currants and other fruits, obviously.

I thought ‘oh my gosh!’ I couldn’t believe how many people wanted to buy my jams and jellies. It would be really exciting if I could make a living from this one day.”

“My daughter, Amarah, is quite excited about helping me. She’s six, so she does get bored quite easily, but hopefully she’ll be more involved as she grows up.”

Aside from a couple of recipes and trial and error, the key ingredient in Amy’s produce is patience.

“I was living in Papakura, keeping an eye on my Nana who’s in her nineties,” the Half Moon Bay local says. “She had always made preserves, and lemon curd was her specialty, but until last year I wasn’t even aware she knew how to make jelly. She has a few fruit trees and had a really good year for guavas. While reminiscing, she told me she used to make jelly. It all went from there.”

Amy began donating her creations in efforts to share Christmas cheer while helping families in need through the pandemic. However, this has also resulted in unintended marketing value, spreading the word in more ways than one!

“That’s especially true with jelly, as it has to boil in a certain way, it’s more likely to boil over leaving a lot of mess. While jam has pulp, you need to strain all that out when making jelly, but it is definitely worth the extra effort.”

Although her nana has now moved away from her Papakura house, Amy – who recently moved to east Auckland – is ensuring she doesn’t miss out on the tastes of home.

“I do plan on making more to drop off and I suppose it has helped based on the amazing feedback I’ve received so far,” she says. “When I first started taking orders,

From her grandmother to Amy, this family’s culinary creations appear to be in safe hands, and now there’s another generation on the boil.

Our house was one of the original farmhouses on Point View Drive. We try to maintain the old cottage style in the garden, including pieces of old farming equipment. We have three-fourth acre with three large oaks on the front that are over 100-years-old. Some of our other trees are a very tall Norfolk Pine, Liquid Amber, Ash, Maples, Magnolias, Totara, Titoki, Golden Elm, Gladitsia, and a Lebanese Cedar. Apart from the older mature trees, we have landscaped and planted everything else. This includes putting in a swimming pool about 17-years-ago and a large vege garden with raised beds, and numerous other features. The pool has a fountain going in winter which is lovely to watch. We love the seasons with their own special displays. Autumn brings lovely colour on the trees and plenty of leaves! Magnolias and camellias come into their own in winter. In spring, the fruit trees are covered in pink and white blossoms alongside daffodils and irises. Throughout summer, roses, hibiscus and dahlias bring a continuation of colour in the garden. Rosehips in autumn look quite ornamental as well. We have a large sweep of lawn bordered with cottage garden type

flower beds. It has been great for games of badminton or volleyball and gatherings for family and friends. Recently we created a small woodland area in an unused corner where we did some clearing over lockdown and made a pathway through the trees. It’s very nice on a hot day in there! Our orchard has lemon, lime, orange, plum, apple, peach, feijoa, fig and persimmon trees. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are grown in a little walk-in enclosure to keep the birds out. Wisteria is grown over the large wooden pergola leading to the vege garden, and we are growing a tecomante over the stump of a coral tree we had cut down. We like garden art, so there are numerous pieces, some classical, some whimsical throughout the garden. Some features are inspired by overseas travel such as the Torii Gate, and Terracotta Warrior. Our grandchildren enjoy the little fairy garden, as well as a swing and slide on our large Ash tree. Birds are plentiful in the garden and it is always a delight to hear the tuis or see a little family of quails foraging around or spy a kingfisher on a branch. As with all gardens it is a neverending work-in-progress and keeps us busy, but we gain much pleasure from it and enjoy sharing it with others”. www.eastlife.co.nz

THEY REALLY ARE

man’s best friend

When NICK KRAUSE, editor of Times community newspaper, is not volunteering at the SPCA, he has three dogs with personalities and a cat that keep him entertained with their antics. Some musings on the animal farm, all part of one big, happy family.

It’s puzzled me for some time now that the lifespan of our pets is relatively short.

walk. They spread his ashes in the water at Eastern Beach where we used to live.

For creatures that bring us [mostly] so much joy, it just doesn’t seem fair.

Fast forward to the adult kids. The eldest and his partner have three very large dogs. The two older dogs are brother and sister and the youngest is a half-brother. He is now larger than the other two and he’s only 14- months-old. Oh, and he’s pretty scatty, struggles to listen to commands and loves vomiting just inside the front door. Max is the funniest of the three of them.

Cats typically live for between 12-17 years and dogs 10-13 years. When we brought a gorgeous German Shepherd pup home, the eldest child was still at primary school. My kids – like others around the globe – would have grown up with a canine or puss. The day he was euthanised I could not make it to the vets. Age and genetics had robbed him of mobility. Terribly sad for the world’s fastest dog. All three children attended with their mother. The eldest still recalls getting mum to stop at a butcher’s shop for a big steak then they helped him around a park for a last

18 | eastlife | june 2022

Everything is an adventure for Max. Every single thing. It’s a reminder, if we needed one, that these animals are more than just pets. They’re family members, companions. We’ve caught him numerous times sitting on the Alpha dog’s head. For a 50kg dog, that’s a sight to see.

I don’t know why. Nor does the Alpha dog that used to very quietly growl when puppy Max came over to play. Alpha dog just accepts it now. Max’s tail has knocked over so many cups of tea and just as many glasses of wine. He has also paid many visits to the vet. There was the mysterious swelling of one of his legs [put down to coming in contact with a noxious plant]. He demolished that first cone of shame within minutes, smashing through furniture and doorways. He obliterated four I think. The last one was reinforced with heavy tape and did the trick somehow. He’s injured a paw badly. Max tears around at breakneck speed. There’s some bush land up on the hill behind our house and he will rocket between trees, over bushes and leap from great heights at a gallop.

But his unique quality is an affinity for other animals, including our cat. They don’t play because she is alarmed by his size. I was holding her one day and he wanted to sniff her tail which was waving about like a worm on a hook. She shredded my arms to get some distance from the beast. When calves were placed in one of the paddocks adjoining the property, each day we would find them gathered round the fence near him sniffing each other’s noses. He did this daily until they moved. He adores other dogs and got a fright when one attacked him. Max will play with visiting pups for hours. And then there are the horses. Max will happily walk amongst them while the others take a slightly wider berth. He’s one of a kind. Enjoy your pets as they enjoy you. www.eastlife.co.nz

LIFE OF LUXURY

for two Bichon Frise Dogs may be man’s best friend but in one Bucklands Beach home it is the woman of the house who is adored by her two Bichon Frise pets. HELEN PERRY talked to Lynne Petty about the special bond she has with her ‘girls’.

When it comes to love and attention, Ruby Rose and Abby Rose couldn’t want for better. At 14 and 8 years old, no amount of pampering is too much for Lynne Petty’s two canine companions. “Every day I wash their eyes, brush them and clean their teeth with an electric toothbrush. They line up for this daily routine which ends with a chewy treat,” she explains. “When basic grooming is completed, the ‘girls’ are dressed – bandana for the neck, a matching bow in their hair and, perhaps, a coat or knitted pullover, depending on the season. When we go out, they have their own seatbelts in the car and overcoats in case of rain.” Daily grooming aside, regular salon visits are a must. “Every five weeks I take them to Three Poodles boutique in Howick www.eastlife.co.nz

for a bath, trim and brush. For a special event, such as grandchild’s birthday party, they might wear a sparkly necklace or arrive sporting a washable colour rinse – pink, blue, whatever suits the occasion. At one fundraiser, Ruby’s red and yellow rinse represented Ronald McDonald; at another I painted her toenails.” Looking pretty is par for the course, however Lynne says an annual vet check and vaccinations are essential. “A quality diet is also important – Royal Canin kibble, a little wet food, and, in the morning, fruit but never pineapple which makes them sick. When they need some quiet time, there is a room complete with creature comforts at the rear of the house, a day sofa in the lounge and at night they sleep on our bed.” Life is indeed sweet for these two

adorable Bichons and Lynne says they not only bring joy to her life but to all who pass by their cottage. “Being small, they don’t need as much exercise as bigger dogs but they are energetic, playful and adventurous. A while back we had a launch and both dogs were quite at home on it. They had their own life jackets and liked to swim. “Most importantly, they are happy, friendly little dogs, intelligent, easy to train and extremely affectionate. I love them to bits.” eastlife | june 2022 |

CHRISTCHURCH

never a dull moment On her annual trip to Christchurch, HELEN PERRY takes the bus to Lyttleton, a village she hasn’t visited in almost 40 years.

tails at each other without any sign of aggression, put us in a convivial mood too.

For many years Lyttleton has slipped under my radar but not this year. On a crisp Saturday morning, husband and I hopped aboard the 9.32am bus at the Christchurch Central Bus Interchange. It would take us through the tunnel and over the hill to the picturesque harbour town. On my first visit, nearly 40 years ago, I loved the tiny wooden houses nestled on the hillside and I recall thinking how novel they would look freshly painted in a rainbow of colours – much like the colourful houses on the isle of Burano, off the coast from Venice. That vision hasn’t played out but what a delight to re-visit after all these years and on a day when the local Farmers’ Market was all go in the main street where small stores, cafes and shop fronts still reflected a past era. The bus trip took about 45 minutes and, hallelujah, as superannuitants we travelled free of charge! On board were about six or seven other passengers also visiting the markets – we knew that because everyone was busily talking about what might be available.

20 | eastlife | june 2022

After we had our fill of food, flowers and fabulous vege, we wandered the foreshore before taking the bus back to our central Christchurch hotel. As always, we stayed at the Ibis on the edge of Cathedral Square. It’s perfectly situated for shopping and sightseeing, in walking distance of many attractions.

Lyttleton

What fun the markets were! After negotiating the length of the street once, we opted for a breakfast of West Coast whitebait butties and ate them perched on chairs which reminded me of my student days at high school. We followed up with coffee from one caravan and the most delicious, freshly-made, full of natural whipped cream, chocolate éclairs – to die for!

Sadly, not being Christchurch residents, there was no buying from the tables of heavenly, fresh baked bread or stalls laden with sumptuous vegetables. Although our buying was limited to a very aromatic ‘Kiwi’ rub (for steaks, roasts or to add to dips), we could still enjoy the wonderful, varied taste of this and that. What’s more, the happy environment, which included plenty of dogs on leashes wagging their

Of course, while bus tours might usually involve a trip of several days to see parts of the country, for me bus travel usually means a series of short day trips (or less) to take in the sights of any unfamiliar city without having to concentrate on navigating roads or finding parking. Furthermore, a big advantage is being able to look out the bus window and take in places of interest along the route – we nearly made an unscheduled ‘hop-off/ hop-on again’ stop at the base of the gondola but then opted to stay on board so as not to miss the market. Indeed, it was a day to remember but there were more adventures to come ... www.eastlife.co.nz

PUNTING ON THE AVON Unbelievably, in all my many years of visiting Christchurch, I had never been punting on the Avon. Either the weather was against me or other plans took precedence. This time, I was not to be denied. What a pleasure this iconic attraction turned out to be. Although we had intended to book our own individual craft and punter, we discovered this needed to be done online, whereas we had opted to walk to the Antigua Boat Sheds, thinking we could trust our luck. As it turned out, a shared, larger punt proved no hassle, as there was only four in our party, and meandering on the river was absolutely idyllic. Our young and appropriately dressed punter was knowledgeable about the sculptures, river care and trees we passed on route. Our interest in the adjacent Botanic Gardens was piqued. So, later, we went walking through this amazing www.eastlife.co.nz

parkland and also indulged in lunch at the architecturally magnificent Ilex Cafe. But before that, we lay back enjoying the leisurely pace of our punt as it glided past lush riverbanks where many people had opted to sit for a snack or bare their legs in the sunshine. The boat sheds themselves were also worth inspecting. Housing numerous punts of varying size, they were brightly painted in fresh green and white stripes – very English – and there were lessons to be learnt for those interested. We considered the cost extremely fair – adults $35; children (5-15years), $15 and a family pass $85. Subsequently, I have chalked this one up for a return visit as lazing a little longer that afternoon was not an option. Instead, we hurried back to our hotel and prepared to meet friends for dinner at the breathtaking ...

KING OF SNAKE I must mention one fabulous restaurant on Oxford Terrace – the riverside dining quarter lined with tempting eateries which attract patrons day and night. An evening with friends at second floor, King of Snake was a winner. Sophisticated, exquisite décor and a diverse, interesting Euro/Asian menu had me in raptures. It’s years since I’ve been so excited about a venue. In particular, a wide selection of small and large sharing plates made choosing difficult – so many intriguing and exotic combinations. Without rabbiting on, I’ll just mention the delicious, crispy eggplant, chicken fried rice balls, mini chicken rotis (yum, yum!) and the Penang curry with beef cheeks. The latter was divine, not anything I expected with the oh-so-tender beef cheeks falling apart on the fork. Crisp pressed

half duck and crispy pork belly completed our selection, both adding to a sumptuous meal. We also ordered calamari, perhaps the only dish I would put to one side – I felt many a venue provided similar and the King of Snake menu offered so much more of interest. Although tempting, we could not manage dessert and had I not been so tired from our daytime excursions I would have liked a nightcap in the bar where, once again, décor and ambience called for us to stay. However, our friends also had a fair drive home to Rolleston, so not this time. This certainly proved to be a memorable night. Having thoroughly enjoyed seven dishes, rice plus a bottle of wine and more than one beer for the men, I did not think our combined bill of $309.50 was over the top, which means I’ll be returning to this new favourite of mine. eastlife | june 2022 |

WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE AWARDS OPEN FOR NOMINATION JH17454-v2

Recognising the achievements of women in governance, nominations are now open for the 2022 New Zealand Women in Governance Awards, hosted by Women on Boards New Zealand and Governance New Zealand. The Women in Governance Awards is an annual celebration of women and organisations making a positive impact on gender equality in governance. The awards celebrate and honour the achievements of women and organisations who are governance leaders, directors, change-makers, and rising stars within their community, as well as public and private sector organisations—all making a difference to achieving gender diversity on boards.

DR DELSEY is the founder of InstinctualParent.com an online community of parents looking to have better relationships with their children. In this new column she’ll cover topics from overcoming challenging behaviour to reconnecting emotionally with your children. If you’re a parent, at some point, you’ve asked yourself: “How do I stop these goddamn tantrums!”

When they ‘bother’ me, are they trying to say “Mum/dad I need you, I feel alone.”

I don’t know about your kids but mine don’t always like to listen or behave well in public... Whether it’s screaming because I cut their toast and now, they want it fixed or getting upset because I tried helping them...

When they snatched the toy from their sibling, were they saying, “I am angry you’re getting attention? I miss mum/dad and I’m sad.”

“These awards are a wonderful celebration of women and organisations who are leading the way on gender equality in governance, showing through their own journeys what can be achieved,” she says. “We are looking forward to celebrating the achievements of this year’s finalists and winners.”

In those moments, luckily, I had my ‘Dr Delsey brain’ on; otherwise I would’ve snapped or yelled. Instead, I observed their behaviours and learnt that underneath the hell and wrath was a ‘need’ that was going unmet. I needed to understand their need, and help meet it so that I could model healthy behaviours and help them become healthy adults.

Since its launch seven years ago, the awards have recognised 35 organisations for their commitment to promoting gender diversity on their boards and 76 women winners and finalists who have gone to shape the future of governance in public, private and not-for-profit boards.

Kids are a handful, but they’ve kept one thing simple… their needs. It’s simply: Connection and love— Can you see me? Can you hear me? Do you love me?

The Women in Governance Awards has eight award categories: Gender Diverse Organisation, Not-For-Profit Governance Leader, Maori Governance Leader, Pacific Governance Leader, Rising Governance Star, Ethnic Communities Governance Leader, Lifetime Achievement Award and a new category of Gender Champion, open to women and men who are championing gender equality in governance.

So, when your kid is having big feelings, get to their level, pause, and breathe. Hard as it is, underneath all of the crazy that’s in front of you, ask yourself this…

Chair of Women on Boards New Zealand and Governance New Zealand, Julie Hardaker, said the Women in Governance Awards has played a vital role in advocating for gender equality around the board table.

When they aren’t ready for daycare/school, were they trying to say, “School is hard, I feel lonely, I get scared, and I don’t want to leave you.” When we shift our perspective, listen, and empathise, it’s easier to see their version of the story. That’s the version they see and it’s guiding their behaviour. It’s not easy, it’s not our default response, and it can make us uncomfortable. But if you want loving, co-operative relationships with your kids and peace at home, then it’s a requirement. If you’re tired, overwhelmed and just don’t know what to do with your kids and want to get the support of like-minded parents just wanting to do better for their kids, then join my FREE Online Community Group by visiting www.instinctualparent.com

Nominations close June 8, 2022. To nominate a women or organisation for an award and for more information about the 2022 Women in Governance Awards and the nomination process, visit the Governance New Zealand website. www.eastlife.co.nz

KIDS AND SCREEN TIME Recommendations from KRISTINE JENSEN, owneroptometrist on keeping an eye on increasing screen time for the young ones glued to their devices. As we head into the winter months we tend to gravitate to indoor activities, so it is timely to consider some recommendations, endorsed by the Australian College of Behavioural Optometrists, on children and screen time. Evidence shows excessive screen use provides a greater risk of myopia (short-sight) development in children and teenagers, eye-teaming or focussing issues resulting in blurred or even double vision, along with headache or sore eyes, neck and shoulder pain and even dry eye. In fact, a local study by Auckland University optometrist Dr Alex Muntz showed a strong association between screen time and dry eye disease, driven by reduced blinking during screen use. While this study did not solely look at children, with the age of participants ranging from 13 to 75 years, AGE

the average age was 24 years and the conclusion was, extended screen time in a young population was associated with blinking behaviour and dry eye symptoms. In my experience, Dry Eye which was traditionally considered a disease associated with older age, has now become more prevalent among my child and teen patients, due to change in today’s visual demands. Furthermore, when it comes to reading on a device, studies show an increase in vision and focusing symptoms along with a reduced reading rate compared to reading off hard copy – in short, it takes more effort to read off a device. So while devices do play an important role; increasing access to information, entertainment and even socialising it is important to keep a check on the number of hours spent on devices.

With the exception of video-calls for socialisation as required.

ALSO KEEP IN MIND: Posture: Ensure your screen is at least your hand-to-elbowlength away from your eyes. Be seated with your screen height, just below your eyes to ease pressure on your neck. Wherever possible utilise a device stand rather than having to hold the device.

Vary your viewing distance: look up and take a few blinks every 20 minutes. Better yet, get up and move your whole body and better still – get outdoors. Avoid devices 1-2 hours before bedtime: as the high energy blue light exposure can disrupt melatonin production and sleep quality.

Cleaner, fresher skin By QED Skincare founder and pharmacist, Shoshana Eisner. A year-round skin-care routine yearround is always advisable but it is essential to change routines with the seasons. Many people experience dry and flaky skin in the winter then their skin does a 360 degree turn as the weather warms up. Although masks (these days) may hide some of our skin, visible areas should still be clear, dewy and glowing! A simple step to soft, glowing skin is to exfoliate but it’s essential to get it right. Here are my tips as to how best exfoliate your skin. HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE EXFOLIATE? For most skin types, twice a week is fine but if skin is very sensitive,

exfoliate only once a week. Overexfoliating will strip away the skin’s natural oils and can leave it feeling dry and irritated. If skin is very angry, don’t exfoliate at all; wait until it settles down. And, remember – different skin types benefit from using different exfoliators. Find the right exfoliator for you. For example: • Oily, congested skin benefits from a more assertive exfoliator to help buff away bumps, dirt and blackheads. Try Clarify Shake to Activate Exfoliator twice a week. Formulated with finely ground walnut shells to buff away ingrained dirt and congestion, it includes peppermint and cypress oils to help soothe inflammation,

fight blemishes and stabilise oil production. • Maturing skin benefits from regular, gentle polishing. Ageing skin tends to be more delicate and often drier which can trigger early skin cell death and dullness. The Wrinkle Rewind Exfoliator, formulated with spherical jojoba beads will gently buff away dead skin cells and debris. It includes Wrinkle Rewind Repair Serum to hydrate, soften, plump and protect against environmental damage. CAN I USE A BODY EXFOLIATOR ON THE FACE AS WELL AS THE BODY? No! The skin of the face is much more delicate than that of the body and can be badly damaged.

However, the body should also be regularly exfoliated using a body exfoliator - one specifically formulated for the body! IS IT SAFE TO GO IN THE SUN AFTER EXFOLIATING? YES, unless using an exfoliator containing AHAS, BHAS OR RETINOIDS, then avoid the sun for at least 48 hours after use. These ingredients, mixed with sun exposure, can trigger significant skin reactions, including burns, pigmentation and redness. SHOULD IRRITATED SKIN BE EXFOLIATED? Irritated skin is very ... irritated! Rubbing it with anything assertive will irritate it more. Wait until the skin has calmed down before contemplating exfoliating.

roundup Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL on new releases from Linden Estate Winery. Hawkes Bay is one of our much-loved coastal areas and over time has developed into one of New Zealand’s most successful wine growing regions second only to Marlborough. PLANNING FOR THE

FINANCIAL FUTURE YOU WANT

Liz Brown Douglas (left) and Dianne Barlow

Are you worried about your bank balance as years roll by? Financial coaches DIANNE BARLOW and LIZ BROWN DOUGLAS from enable.me are here to help you build your retirement nest egg. Are you feeling ready for retirement? The 2022 New Zealand Seniors Retirement Living Report revealed that almost half of New Zealanders aged over 50 don’t feel they’re prepared financially to retire at the age they want to [1]. This isn’t surprising when you learn that most Kiwis have less than six months’ worth of expenses saved, and two in five would be unable to access $5000 if something unexpected were to happen (2022 Financial Resilience Index). With the recent sharp rise in the cost of living, the money we’re earning or have saved in the bank isn’t going to get us as far as we might like. And worrying that you’re not going to have enough money to pay off your mortgage or get you through your retirement comfortably isn’t a great feeling.

Talking point: CUSTOM DESIGNED LETTERBOXES It was the search for a feature letterbox to complement their new home that led Sue Collyns to come up with a creative idea of working on a custom designed letterbox. The talented artist and photographer discovered that outdoor art was a perfect medium for it. Soon, the custom designed letterboxes were created in their Howick factory. It wasn’t long before that they became a talking point as more people were out taking walks during the Covid lockdown.

The good news is that it’s never too early and seldom too late to start growing your wealth and planning for the financial future you want. For those who have a few years left up their sleeve before retirement and have been relying predominantly on savings, now may just be the best time to pivot and look at investing instead. With

inflation predicted to continue to increase, the future buying power of any savings will decrease, so it’s worth looking at ways to make that money work harder for you. And, if you’re still paying off your mortgage, it’s worth exploring options for repaying it off faster. The earlier you’re able to get mortgage-free, the sooner you can use that surplus cash to boost your retirement savings or put towards an investment. Don’t even have a mortgage yet? There are ways you can grow your wealth too by seeing where you’re spending unnecessarily, where you can cut costs, and diverting that surplus money towards building a financial buffer and saving for your deposit.

For help in achieving the financial future you want, book your consultation with financial strategist Dianne Barlow or Liz Brown Douglas at the Botany enable.me office today. enable.me/book-a-consultation.

Lots of enquiries later, they added three designs on their Wild on Walls website that took off with orders being shipped off all over the country. Enjoying the fact that their photography and art business is getting creative by the day, Sue can’t stop smiling as she has a stroll down her garden path installed with an outdoor garden art panel she’s created along with a custom designed letter-box.

WHAT’S UP WITH ANGELA

LEARN. PREPARE. ACTIVATE.

WHY CHOOSE AN AGENT CAREFULLY?

BILL POTTER – Maverick Thinker. Global Speaker. Personal Power Coach. Bill has made personal presentations in 53 countries. Here is a summary of a keynote to 7,600 in Hong Kong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM As I write this column for you at my desk, powerful music drifts all around me, inspiring me to be sure to help you believe that... not all is ‘lost’. We still have an amazing world, once we explore beyond the negativity that relentlessly dominates every headline on every platform every day. Music please. https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=zKN_ pnzIM7k As the 3Guy©, the creator of 3Law© and the designer of the 3be©, I have always treated the past, the present and the future, with equal relevance, because ‘stop living in the past’, ‘live in the now’ and ‘the future isn’t here yet’ doesn’t hack it and never will! Since ‘time’ is a ‘continuum’ (endless) all these dimensions are part of the ‘time team’. The ‘past’ is the time of Learning. The ‘present’ is the time of Preparing. The ‘future’ is the time of ‘Activation’. BTW. We actually ‘live’ in the future, because that is where we are heading. Imagine arriving in the future, unprepared! Humans divided the time

When circumstances change and you decide to sell your most valuable asset, you should carefully consider the ins and outs of choosing an agent, says ANGELA RUDLING from Bayleys Howick. Knowledge with experience in the area and skill in negotiation are paramount, as well as their company’s reputation. Beware, if an agent is not from your area, then they are likely pursuing you because business is a little quiet in their normal patch.

continuum into parts... from ‘seconds’ to ‘centuries’. So, if we want to invite ‘reality’ into our lives, we must understand that we are continuously ‘stepping into’ the future. But, it’s OK, because all three dimensions belong to our journey!

As much as it is tempting to list with an agent who offers you free marketing or low commission, it is most prudent to consider why they would do this? Ask yourself how hard will this agent work to ensure he or she achieves the very best offer rather than a quick offer?

The key to a more positive, thereby more powerful you, is how you use the three dimensions to best effect. But please, start this journey now. You can. You really can. Please go to this URL and let the music play on. https://80000hours. org/problem-profiles/ Go on then. (

Saving a few hundred or thousand dollars at the outset might seem tempting, however, consider these facts. The experience of a local agent to negotiate their own value by way of commission will be an indicator of how much skill they will display when they are negotiating on your behalf.

Portofino

T S U L R E D N WA ONE OF MY DREAM DESTINATIONS Apart from travel and photography, superyacht chef Jamie Neben is in love with Italy.

Where do you start when it comes to describing Italy? The magnificent architecture, inspiring landscapes, rich culture, food, wine and of course the coffee! My first Italian experience was in Naples, the birthplace of pizza in the narrow alley of Naples. A few days later we headed to Rome. The train systems are amazing and travelling at the top speed of 300km/400km, we made it in no time. I just had to see the Colosseum, the 1900-year-old largest standing amphitheater in the world. I recommend paying extra liras for the fast-track line. The Colosseum that once was a venue for gladiator

38 | eastlife | june 2022

fights, animal hunts and even mock naval battles is now one of the new seven wonders of the world. Rome is amazing and seeing the buildings up-close was more than I could have imagined but considering I had just one day in Rome, the hop-on- hop-off bus was perfect.

port to port along the Amalfi coast. One of my favourite places was Pompeii. I couldn’t get over the size of the city and how intact it was and having Mount Vesuvius in the background, known for one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in European history was a bit eerie.

Working on a yacht means we are always on the move, and the next day we headed for Capri just off the coast. It’s a massive hot spot for super yachts over the European summer and you’ll find 100s anchored near the shore (picture attached).

Towards the end of summer we headed to Genoa for repairs and resupply. We stopped off in Portofino, a beautiful little fishing village with amazing pastel coloured buildings (see photo). While there, do check out Castello Brown, an ancient military fortress that offers the best views in town.

The next few weeks we went from

From Genoa I took the train to the

coast to Cinque Terre, meaning five lands which is made up of five crazily constructed fishing villages with spectacular views. My favourite was Manarola you can hike between the towns. It’s about 12km or you can take the train. The hike has some amazing views and there is always someone along the way selling limoncello. There is so much more to discover in Italy—imagine an Italian town that has a 24/7 fountain that dispenses wine instead of water—and it doesn’t cost anything! I’m looking forward to returning this year. Hopefully I can tick off the Dolomites this time. Ciao, for now. www.eastlife.co.nz
