Hot rodding is more of a culture, as well as a description of a vehicle type, and the definition varies from owner to owner.

The most popular definition of a hot rod would be “a modified vehicle of American origin, originally manufactured prior to 1949”.

Steve Keys, who has been a member of Southside Streeters for over 40 years, says that the club is a hobby group of hot rodders and classic car enthusiasts. It is a community-based, family-oriented club that meets once a month at the club rooms behind the Howick Leisure Centre in Pakuranga. At these meetings, the members discuss their common interest and passion for the vehicles and the hobby, and offer support and advice to those members who are currently building or restoring their cars.

The club has a steady membership number of 50, with second generation family members now also enthusiastic hot rodders and full members of Southside Streeters.

“Our club is supporting the Howick Business Association and will be displaying around 15 hot rods and classic cars at the Howick Village HOP event,” says Keys, who is proud of the fact that Southside Streeters assist the local community in any way it can. A recent example is a car show, put on by the club at the Howick Leisure Centre, which benefited St John with $5000 being donated to the charity.

An endless summer

We have been blessed with an outstanding summer. Perhaps the gardeners in us and the local landscapers are probably cursing the succession of hot dry days, the rest of us have been able to bask in this tremendous weather.

What better way of enjoying these fine days than cruising the bars and cafes of Howick Village. Nothing beats sitting outside, dining al fresco or just enjoying the taste of a fine NZ wine or a boutique beer and taking in the ambience of Howick Village.

We have a range of small friendly bars dispersed along Picton Street, nicely punctuated with a variety of cafes, bound to satisfy the most critical of palettes. Most of these have outside seating so you can enjoy the weather while watching the residents of Howick go about their daily business.

This scene will be further enhanced this coming Saturday, March 7 with the Howick Hop coming to the Village. Already we have more than a 100 entries that will be lining up their gorgeous classic cars and classic caravans all along Picton Street.

The main road will be closed for most of the day to give spectators a chance to mingle with these dedicated owners and their pride and joy.

This will be a tremendous occasion for all the family to enjoy while Dad ogles the classic cars and dreams of future ownership Mum can leave the children with him and go about her shopping unimpeded.

We look forward to joining you on Picton Street, Howick Village this Saturday. Cheers, Ken Scott, Chair. HVA.Inc
