ON THE COVER HOT SHOT! One of New Zealand’s premium international photo events, the Auckland Festival of Photography (June 1-30) sees work by some of this country’s best and brightest shutterbugs shared with the public. Recently, SOUTH spoke with local entrant, Torben Nielsen, (whose photo, Fire Dancer, graces this month’s cover) about his love of photography and what it takes to take a top shot. See pages 20-21 to read more.

WINNER-WINNER

Well, the budget is still being digested by a wide range of people: it has been praised by some and damned by others. Prior to the budget, the Government announced health reforms and while some advantages were clear, I had concerns about the lack of ‘nitty gritty’ – exactly how many and what major issues would actually be tackled. So, it’s Brownie points for some added detail in the budget namely an extra $200 million for Pharmac to pay for more medicines, treatments and personal medical devices for sick New Zealanders.

WIN TO BE FAIR – CONFESSIONS OF A DISTRICT COURT JUDGE

The Minister of Health, Andrew Little, suggested the added funding would help an estimated 370,000 patients a year. Let’s hope so!

It’s not often that a judge confesses! However, after serving 12 years on the bench, Rosemary Riddell has turned her talents to writing, presenting an often humorous, and most human, account of the tragedies and challenges as seen from one of the weightiest of occupations. Moving and thought-provoking, this book provides an insight into the people who go before the law and those who lay it down. Rosemary Riddell: To be Fair – confessions of a district court judge | RRP $39.99 | Upstart Press

In addition, the Government has promised to almost double the number of publicly funded cochlear implants, thus restoring hearing to many people who have lost it. This promise was part of Labour’s 2020 election manifesto and it seems the party is now delivering on that – hoorah for that! Of these, and other details, it’s a case of the public having to take the Government at its word that there will be more money for hospitals and

primary healthcare and that budget promises will actually translate to better health care ‘for all’. On the other hand, it’s interesting the Government has decided not to go ahead with a policy from the last Government of providing a free annual GP visit and eye check for Supergold Card holders. It seems officials believe that such a move would provide limited benefit and the $197 million cost (over four years) could be better spent – no word as to how or on what. That’s a pity especially when superannuation is not considered a ‘main’ benefit and pensioners won’t ‘benefit’ from the budget increase to benefits; regretful seeing as the savings many made over a lifetime of working to help support them in their golden years, now earn virtually nothing in the bank. Obviously, the Government thinks the elderly can manage where others cannot.

Q& A WITH

Peter and Maureen Strong RE/MAX 2ASPIRE Is your office a franchise; what area does it cover? The RE/MAX franchise network is a global real estate system of franchisee-owned and operated offices and their affiliated independent professionals. It was developed to grow and evolve agents and business owners into industry leaders. New and experienced business owners are given the opportunity to grow and develop their own business and brand, while being backed by one of the world’s most productive and successful real estate brands. Being independently owned and operated we are not restricted to boundaries; our team can list and sell, lifestyle, residential, developments and farms. How did you start in real estate and what roles did you fill previously either in the industry or elsewhere? To keep it brief, after travelling for seven weeks around Europe while our furniture was in transit and moving to Tewantin, Sunshine Coast, Australia in 2005, we quickly discovered that our previous qualifications – Maureen’s background in law and management, Pete’s in sports, health and coaching – did not meet Australian requirements.

So, we decided to investigate Property Services (Real Estate), sat in a class for six weeks with John McGrath, then did our papers and started working (Pete for LJ Hooker, Sunshine Coast and Maureen for Ray White, Noosa).

marketing, and offer low service fees. It is this personal attention to detail which people don’t often see, which that makes us The Team of Choice. To us it is more about client/customer service not awards (even though we do have these).

What is one thing a potential vendor may not know about RE/ MAX 2Aspire, Pukekohe?

Why is your team so successful?

We recognised that real estate had evolved and, with that, a fresh, dynamic approach needed to be implemented whereby clients were given a more personal, individual approach to their requirements. It is not about putting a value on the home, but about adding value to each client’s specific needs. Because RE/MAX is a global leader, when a property is listed, it goes straight onto the global website and is translated into more than 40 languages. Local expertise means more opportunities. Why is RE/MAX 2Aspire so successful? People who have engaged our services are often surprised at the reasonable service (commission) and marketing fees we provide as well as those items which aren’t often talked about. Some of our clients need assistance, so we pay for professional cleaning,

We all learnt from world events that having a successful business model is all about flexibility. If our clients want to meet/contact us they make an appointment. Our team has days when members come in for training and other days when they aren’t tied to an office with duty rosters. This means they can enjoy a better balance of work and lifestyle, making them more effective and available. We are not followers, we are leaders. What’s more, because businesses today are more internet-driven, we have tailored our business to incorporate this. We don’t sit in an office waiting for business; instead consultants are out there making business happen. There is no complacency. Clearly this is successful formula as most of our listings are sold. Is there room in your agency for more real estate salespeople? Yes, we expect further growth and welcome contact from selfmotivated people who have a

passion to excel. We are committed to creating an environment which encourages personal growth and supports training to create outstanding agents who achieve outstanding results. We want quality not quantity. Contact us on 0800 76 78 76 or email your CV to office@remax2aspire.co.nz What does it take to make a good real estate salesperson; what are the characteristics needed? A successful career in real estate requires dedication, focus, and an investment in time. When agents make that investment in obtaining a licence and then demonstrate their personal commitment to building a long-term, profitable real estate career, they will succeed. We have learnt that people who are good communicators, and who build relationships with other people, achieve and succeed. What advice would you give if someone is getting into real estate? It is not all about getting a listing, sticking a pole in the ground and then driving around in fast cars – believe me we have heard a lot of this sort of expectation when interviewing prospective agents. Anyone wanting to enter the industry must be able to

Each Office is Independently Owned and Operated

Husband-and-wife real estate team, Peter and Maureen Strong, opened RE/MAX 2Aspire in Waiuku in 2017. After successfully selling and assisting people in this area, an opportunity arose for them to take over the RE/MAX Pukekohe office in 2019. With the Covid-19 pandemic occurring in 2020, and the Waiuku lease expiring, the couple decided to merge the two offices. This brought opportunities for growth not only to the team’s sales consultants who live in Waiuku, Pukekohe and wider South Auckland, but also to clientele. SOUTH magazine asked Peter and Maureen about their company and the part it plays locally.

communicate, be self-driven and be motivated. We provide a lot of support, training, mentoring through our office and RE/MAX Head Office. Real Estate allows people to have opportunities in their career paths, Specialists in Commercial, Property Development, Auctioneer. That is why it is a career not just a job. Do today’s real estate agents need to be tech-savvy? Absolutely! Today’s world is very digital, so salespeople need to have the ability to navigate their business through technology, but they should also be able to assist clients with digital marketing as our customers are active online.

in a particular place. We love movies, eating out, taking a leisurely walk, beaches and visiting historical places. At home we are very private – Maureen loves to read books and Pete is an active gardener. Coming from fifth generations of farmers, his plot at home may be smaller, but the team is never short of our overload of vegetables or fruit. We have just finished the bananas.

What are your interests outside work and does weekend work impact on them? Because we work together in the same industry, we always book a date and seldom plan. We pack the car with the overnight bag and just drive. Leisure to us is just being with each other; it doesn’t have to be a specific activity or

CAUGHT NAPPING –

good!

y days The pressures of working lives or bus e revolving around family generally tak as their toll…at some point! So, it comes of us no surprise there are days when most ded to might feel that a nap is just what is nee restore energy and boost our mood.

While a quick rest can provide these benefits, napping for the right amount of time is key. Here’s what you should know:

Five to 10 minutes – The brief moment of relaxation offered by a nap of this duration can slightly improve attention span. Even just closing your eyes and breathing deeply for a few minutes can help reduce stress – this can be useful in

a work environment where napping for longer isn’t viable. 10 to 20 minutes – This is widely considered the ideal amount of time for a nap, leaving one feeling refreshed and more alert, which in turn can improve concentration and productivity. To ensure this nap is restorative, set an alarm to prevent you from sleeping too long. 30 minutes – A nap of this duration can actually make you feel more

tired. The body has enough time to enter a deep sleep but not enough to complete a full sleep cycle. This causes sleep inertia, resulting in feeling sluggish and groggy for up to an hour after waking. 60 minutes – Although an hourlong nap can leave you feeling drowsy when you wake, it can also enhance your performance of memory-related tasks. Additionally, it may provide enough deep sleep to boost your capacity to learn.

90 minutes – Because this is enough time to complete a full sleep cycle, a nap of this duration is easier to wake up from than a 30 or 60-minute one. It promotes creativity, alertness, memory and concentration. While not recommended for people with insomnia, a 90-minute nap can help make up for a short or sleepless night. If you have trouble sleeping, or often feel exhausted, talk to your doctor to help avoid the onset of related health problems.

“It’s important you do your due diligence. You decide what ticks more boxes for you. Here the share of the capital gain meant we had more equity, so it felt more like ours.”

“The share in the capital gain is a much fairer arrangement.”

ERIC MURRAY

rivers of gold

Up before the crack of dawn, even in the middle of winter, Eric Murray has taken to his sport like a rower to water. Recently, JON RAWLINSON caught up with this world-renowned Olympian and one half of the famous ‘Kiwi Pair’. While most of us are well aware of laurels well earned by former Pukekohe High student, Eric Murray, he treasures the journey at least as much as the destination. “Actually, my biggest sporting highlight was probably playing golf with Steve Williams the other day,” he laughs. “Seriously, though, there’s nothing bigger to achieve than Olympic Gold, but it’s not the be all and end all. It’s not the actual [medal winning] race so much as looking back on the journey it took to get there.” Eric’s extraordinary run resulted in eight World Rowing Championships gold medals as well as two Olympic golds with his long-time crewmate, Hamish Bond – London (2012) and Rio (2016). “When you’re coming through there are plenty of things you tick off along the accomplishment route – the first time you make a rep’ team, selected into the team, first at world champs, first medal, it’s all a part of the journey.”

16 | south | june 2021

Most recently, Eric and Hamish were named Team of the Decade (for the 2010s) at the 2021 Halberg Awards; adding to five Halbergs (two Supreme and three Team of the

Year Awards) from prior years. “I feel like I’ve been out of the game for a while now but things still result from what we achieved, which is great. The [2021] Halberg really does top it all off nicely. I think people still struggle to believe how well we did – I still struggle to believe it myself.” How did they do it? Was it all down to talent? “The biggest ‘talent’ in any athlete is attitude; the will to turn up, day in and day out, and do your best every single time. We harp on about hard work, but it’s more about work done well, which wasn’t just about us – we couldn’t have achieved what we did [on the water] without a huge number of people around us,” he says. “We knew we were good, but I wouldn’t say it was expected when we won the [men’s coxless] four in 2007. From that point we knew, if we lived up to our capabilities, we’d either finish in front or close to it.” ‘In front’ was usually the order of the day for Eric and Hamish! Forming a lasting bond with Bond, Eric was (ironically) pleased to see the back of him, in competition that is. “Hamish and I had a relationship based on trust... and winning,” www.southmagazine.co.nz

he laughs. “Hamish was a phenomenal beast who just wanted to be the best, no matter what it took. I guess I complemented that; we both drove each other harder. If you put two people who believe they are the best in the same crew, it’s going to work.”

we didn’t lose form.” Good form was certainly evident on the water. However, Eric confesses his winning run began with a somewhat sluggish start.

“When I was in school [Pukekohe High], I was looking for a sport to keep me fit over summer. A few people said I should give it a go, so I did and was... bloody terrible at it! But I stuck with, got better and carried on.”

While success begets success, success must also surround it; with New Zealand rowing running strong, Eric and Hamish benefited from training and competing regularly against other top crews.

“When I was in school [Pukekohe High], I was looking for a sport to keep me fit over summer – I played first XV rugby until my final year. A few people said I should give rowing a go, so I did and was... bloody terrible at it! But I stuck with, got better and carried on.”

“We got to test ourselves against the rest of the team quite often. It’s a weird thing, sport is mostly about experimentation – you prepare and train, compete, think about what went right and what went wrong, then go back and do it all over again.”

Although Pukekohe High is not exactly famous for producing rowing greats, Eric claimed some Maadi Cup regatta honours, including an Under-17 national title.

Greater than the sum of its parts, this sporting duo needed to work hard although, interesting, winning itself proved an advantage. “Because we weren’t losing, we didn’t have to ask ourselves some of the hardest questions, about how much effort we were putting in,” Eric says. “Losing form is easy and it’s a struggle to find the magic again. “We finished second or third on the points table one year so we had a good team at the time, which also included [future World Championship silver medallist], Paula Twining. The school has won some events at the regatta in the past but schools really need a big numbers of kids rowing – it’s highly competitive.” Although Eric is now living in Cambridge, he was born in Hastings, moved to Manurewa with his family and, shortly afterwards, to Bombay. “I was about three, or around that age, when we moved to Manurewa.

My parents then built a house in Bombay, which is where I grew up, going to Bombay Primary. When we [includes his sister, Fiona] flew the roost, my parents [Annette and Peter] sold their little five-acre lifestyle block and moved to Pukekohe Hill; they’ve been there ever since,” he says. “My parents were massive supporters but they never pressured me. They would’ve spent about 25 grand on international travel without even setting foot on a plane. When, finally, I didn’t need [their money], they were able to come along too. They came to a few of the world champs and the Olympics. I guess that’s the best any parents can do for their children.” To be the best may have involved the utmost dedication but, when asked about the sacrifice, Eric stops me in my tracks. “Any athlete you hear saying representing your country is a sacrifice needs a slap!” he laughs. “It’s a privilege to represent your country. We just went about trying to be the best and, I guess, that’s what we became.” south | june 2021 | 17

T O K YO – NZ’S FLOAT HOP E S So long as the Olympic torch blazes in Tokyo (from late July), it’s a safe bet Kiwi rowers will be setting the water alight, rowing legend, Eric Murray, expects. “Our women’s programme is on fire, so I’d say most of our medals will come from them. As for the guys, there’s not many who would make you think we’ve got some money in the bank but there’s some young talent coming through, which is good.” Although the final team will be named on June 9, New Zealand will field a number of boats across various classes, with such star crew as Hamish Bond, Emma Twigg, Zoe McBride and more. When they do claim medals, however, their success will have been fuelled, in part, by many others, present and past. From coaching great, Dick Tonks, to trail-blazing rowers such as Philippa Baker, Brenda Lawson, Rob Waddell, Mahé Drysdale and the Evers-Swindell twins, the Tokyo rowers will be following a legacy of laurels. At the Olympics alone, Kiwi rowers won 11 medals prior to the 2000 Athens games and 13 during or since. “Since the mid nineties, our programme was built on ‘success breeds success’,” Eric adds. “The last 20 years has been exceptional in terms of the people we had and not just rowers at the top level.”

INDOOR ROWING – THE INCREDIBLE & ACCESSIBLE Achievement in some sports requires little more than the will to win; although rowing necessitates more than that, a (relatively) new version of the sport is making it more accessible than ever before. “Indoor rowing is more accessible [than rowing], it’s all-inclusive, even easily adaptable for people with all sorts of disabilities,” former Olympic rowing champion, Eric Murray says. “It’s good for seniors, in particular, as it is low impact and only as demanding as they need it to be. People in their eighties and nineties are competing on rowing machines just because they can!” Essentially, indoor rowing involves people competing against each other on rowing machines. Eric’s son, Zac, doesn’t compete but he does “hop on the rower from time to time”. As a patron for Autism NZ, it’s not surprising that inclusiveness and accessibility to sport are important to Eric. “My nine-year-old boy is autistic.

At first, I thought patronage meant handing over plenty of cash,” he laughs, “but it’s really about being a face for the organisation and helping connect dots with scarce resources from government to whatever we can get through the private sector and community.” As opposed to outdoor or classic rowing, competitors don’t need a boat or even access to a river to participate in indoor rowing; all they need is a machine, and an internet connection to compete against others worldwide. “Indoor rowing loses a little in terms of the art of rowing, just a fraction,” Eric says. “Although it can be a sport on its own, it’s also a great way to introduce people to rowing and identify talent which, otherwise, might be missed.” The sport is versatile too, with changes to races lengths and age or weight classes implemented quickly. Eric hung up his oars with regards to competitive rowing in 2017 but, as President of Indoor Rowing

NZ, he is making his new post a winner. Unsurprisingly, he has indoor rowing records to his name, although doesn’t tend to compete these days. Indoor rowing isn’t exactly ‘mainstream’ yet, but it has been gaining in popularity, especially with the pandemic hampering rowers from hitting the water. “Lockdown [prevented] rowing but indoor rowing still carried on. Looking ahead, travelling overseas will still be tough so this is an amazing way for rowers to carry on training and even competing.” As for the future of this sport, it could see participants going for gold at some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events. “We’re trying to get indoor rowing to work more as a standalone sport, running [more] competitions and building the sport in general,” Eric adds. “Never say never; it has Olympic potential. However, it’s also a nice fit for esports, which were becoming more popular even before the pandemic.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

HEALTH ISSUES IN SENIOR DOGS

KIDS BOOKS

DR NIKKI FROST, senior vet at Franklin Vets Pukekohe, explains the impact of ageing on dogs.

Most people have heard the saying that one dog year is the equivalent to seven human years however, it really isn’t as simple as that as smaller dogs age more slowly than giant breed dogs. This means that a small dog is considered as senior at 10-11 years, whereas giant breed dogs become seniors from the age of five years. Common conditions seen in senior dogs include arthritis, heart conditions, reduced kidney function, dental disease, underactive thyroid, hearing and vision loss, cancer and senile changes. Signs that your animal may be suffering from one of these conditions include: • Limping or struggling to jump, sit or stand up • Changes in appetite or thirst • Exercise intolerance • Coughing • Increased panting • Sleeping more or changes in

their sleep patterns • Accidents in the house • Aggression • Changes in weight – either weight loss or weight gain • New lumps and bumps • Bad breath • Behaviour changes However, animals can be very good at hiding illness and pain, so it is still important that they have regular senior checks with your vet. These include a full health check and may include blood and urine tests. Studies have shown that one in five seemingly well senior animals will have abnormalities on senior blood screens. This increased to two in five for geriatrics.

“Because my work photography is so structured, quite often I just shoot from the hip.”

Torben Nielsen.

Torben Nielsen

TAKES ON LIFE at Taking life one step (and one frame) a a time, Torben Nielsen has fast earned reputation for his first rate photos, as JON RAWLINSON explains. e from top) Waikato River — Photos by Torben Nielsen: (clockwis The Joy Of Playing With Bubbles. Tuakau Bridge; Time Out In Paris and

Most of us get only one shot at life; a photographer, Torben Nielsen has many in some ways and at least two in another.

Photography] festival – The Joy of Playing with Bubbles – was an off the hip shot taken at an event in Totara Park last year.”

“About five years ago I died. I was in the queue to go on a chair lift for the luge in Queenstown and, basically, dropped dead from a blood clot. Luckily, the guys in the ticket booths were trained in CPR otherwise I wouldn’t be here; it would’ve been a different story.”

When it comes to post-production, art photographers tend to take a different approach to (for example) photojournalists. In fact, this is where much of the artistry comes into frame. His photos are taken in colour but, in some cases, he converts them to black and white.

A much different story or a great deal shorter one at least!

“I used to think what you shot is what you should put out; my attitude is completely different now. I do go with what I’ve shot sometimes, but I’ll also crop, delete or add things without any qualms about it at all. I’m trying to portray something that’s in my mind, as much as anything else.

Thankfully, there with the grace of God goes Torben, sharing drop dead gorgeous photos of the world with the world. From animals to landscapes and people, this Hill Park local’s work features a wide range of subjects. “I don’t stick to a certain genre; I like variety. That does [contrast] with the photos I take for work [as a real estate photographer],” he says. “Overall, photography is a balance of having the eye to see something and having the ability to take it. Really, it all comes down to light and composition,”

“Photography is an art form and [editing] is part of that,” Torben explains. “Knowing what looks better in black and white comes down to intuition. By taking away colour [digitally] a photo can focus the eye more on form and shape, making the subject stand out without the distraction of colour.”

On occasions, Torben will have a location and subject in mind but, most often, he shoots first and plans later.

His love of photography began in his teens with a talismanic piece of equipment, courtesy of an acclaimed Kiwi wildlife photographer.

“Because my work photography is so structured, quite often I just shoot from the hip,” he laughs. “One of the photos which appears in the [2021 Auckland

“My first camera was actually David Lloyd’s first camera; he sold it to me when I was at uni’. We were members of the same church at the time and became friends.

www.southmagazine.co.nz

He actually introduced me to my wife and was a groomsman at our wedding, so, although he wasn’t a mentor, he had a huge influence on my life.”

Art snaps are his passion but Torben’s ‘day job’ as a real estate photographer (he’s currently with Total Focus Photography) has helped sharpen his skills.

Torben and his wife, Maria, now belong to The River Church in Pukekohe. Born Wellington, Torben has (for the most part) lived in east Auckland before moving south to The Gardens then on to his current home in Hill Park. After stepping away from his camera for (approximately) 25 years due to work and family commitments, his talent was rekindled thanks to a trip abroad.

“Everyone asks me ‘so you’re the one who makes all the rooms look bigger’! I get that a lot, but I don’t use fisheye [lenses],” he laughs.

“In about 2005, we took a trip to Europe. I borrowed my mate’s Canon ‘point and squirt’. I’d had a jigsaw of Cinque Terre in Italy when I was young and always wanted to go there. “When we did, I managed to take a photo that was almost the same [as the jigsaw image]. That really inspired me to get back into photography.”

“It’s all time behind the camera, though, and my editing skills have improved vastly. Real estate work requires the best possible composition, so I’ve improved in that way too.” It has improved, so much that Torben was awarded LPSNZ, an honours distinction bestowed by the Photographic Society of New Zealand last year and his photos have featured in the annual Auckland Festival of Photography for the past few years. Two of his photos are on display as part of this year’s fest’ at Uxbridge Arts & Culture in Howick – June 1-30.

Although local subjects (including landscapes) often fall within his frame, this talented artist is planning to shoot off abroad when possible.

In addition, he’s snapped up awards in competitions including the Photographic Society of New Zealand National Exhibition, as well as the prestigious Trenna Packer Salver and George W. Glennie photography contests.

“I’ve travelled but not extensively. When the borders open up again, I would love to go back to Europe, especially southern Europe, Scandinavia, and America – New York, New Orleans and San Francisco, in particular,” he says.

“I haven’t been entering competitions for very long but I’ve done well,” he adds. “Awards may help sell works but, mainly, entering competitions is more about gaining recognition that you’re on the right track.” south | june 2021 | 21

VINTAGE

roundup Wine columnist and connoisseur, DENNIS KNILL, gives his view on white and red varietals. When purchasing wine, the grape variety, price, winery and even the label deserve respect. And, as the winds of change continue to sweep the New Zealand wine industry with new varietals, there is much to report. While some wine lovers prefer to drink the tried-and-true, thanks to a new generation of winemakers, we are blessed with enterprising wineries breaking new ground with exciting red and white varietals. As we become more adventurous, vineyards are producing more lesser known varietals. Many wine lovers are content to sip on chardonnay or sauvignon blanc but if it’s adventure you want, take your pick from pinot gris, riesling, rose, gewürztraminer, viognier, albarino, arneis, verdelho, chenin blanc, semillion and gruner veltliner. What’s more, for those drawn to reds, with cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir leading the charge, the magic of syrah, merlot, malbec, pinotage, chambourcin, tempranillo and montepulciano, offer more than just a small voice. Here is a selection of white and red varietals produced by Villa Maria you might like to try:

They sold out in two days.” Spurred on by demand, Melanie launched her e-store soulslips.co.nz and within eight months, had sold more than 600 pairs of slippers. “I also saw a market for making lined dressing gowns from the blanks and these have proved hugely popular. I now have a small team of sewers making these one-ofa-kind slippers, dressing gowns and other fashion items.” However, Melanie says the days of sourcing blankets from op shops have long gone and although blankets made by the woollen mills of New Zealand’s past may be hard to find she has discovered a boutique company now making a select range of woollen blankets in stunning colourways. Aiming to bring warmth, comfort, and unique, upcycled and new products to women of all ages, Melanie says she loves using the blankets because they

Customers can also request variations on a theme – a hood, no hood, zip or some other minor change which I can mostly accommodate.

“Importantly, all our pre-loved woollen blankets are handpicked, to ensure they are in perfect condition,” she adds. “The team takes time sewing each creation and everyone prides themselves on producing quality, handmade products which bring other women warmth, comfort, and soul.”

HYDRATING FACIAL CARE, THREE-STEP REGIME Prickly Pear Cactus might be the major miracle plant used in Weleda’s new Hydrating Facial Care range but products are anything but barbed! Instead, each product, which draws on the plant’s natural stores of juicy mucilage (watery tissue), aims to deliver long lasting moisture to keep skin smooth and fresh. The Hydrating range includes a 30ml 24h Hydrating Facial Cream (the first step in Welda’s three-step hydrating skincare regime), 10ml Hydrating Eye Gel (step two designed to soothe, cool and nourish the eye area) and the oil-free 100ml Hydrating Facial Mist to assist in balancing oils in the skin (step three). Available at Farmers, health stores and pharmacies, RRP $29.90 each).

ENERGISE YOUR MAN Check out this new duo from ClarinsMen – Energizing Gel and Energizing Eye Gel, full of vitality and hydration with organic red ginseng extract. In one step, the fresh, toning Energizing Gel (50ml RRP $76) hydrates and strengthens the skin without leaving it feeling oily or sticky. In addition ClarinsMen Energizing Eye Gel (15ml RRP $66) visibly revives the eyes (reduces dark circles and puffiness), hydrates and strengthens the eye contour. An ultra-freshning gel: the tri-ball applicator massages and drains the eye contour.

RELIEF FOR SEVERE SCARRING Severe scarring of any sort can blight self-confidence and result in many personal issues. However, thankfully medical moisturising cream ALHYDRAN has been formulated to significantly reduce the formation/ symptoms of major scarring particularly those associated with burns, surgery and post-pregnancy. Supported by science this after care cream can reduce the appearance of old scars, reduce itchiness from dry skin and reduce painful, red, tight skin. Paraben and fragrance-free, it contains 45% aloe vera gel which provides moisturising properties and, importantly, it has an SPF30 level sun protection, an advantage given the potentially harmful effect of the sun in New Zealand. ALHYDRAN (59ml SPF) is available online exclusively at www.oneuprehab.co.nz/collections/ alhydran.

OUT OF EUROPE

WHAT LIES WITHIN... OUTSIDE THE BOX: When it comes to his cabinets in particular, French furniture designer, Erwan Boulloud, is not afraid to colour outside the lines; way, way, way outside!

Testament to the fact that furniture design need not be purely fixated on functionality, but can be an inspiring and inspired art form as well, Monsieur Boulloud’s cabinets open our minds as much as making for an eye-opening experience.

Although these pieces (and others from this range) are not available in New Zealand stores, readers keen to purchase any of his work should contact the company (via erwanboulloud.com) to discuss orders and shipping.

MISSING PERSONS

Sleeping dogs may be best left to dream but there’s no rest for CK Stead! This prolific and award-winning novelist, Poet Laureate, ONZM (etcetera!) has again turned his insightful eye inward to produce the third and final volume of his memoirs. The first two volumes, South-West of Eden and You Have a Lot to Lose, are also still available through booksellers.

Where there’s Grace, there’s power! Life has made Patricia Grace stronger, as this powerful (although touching) memoir reveals. Expressing her deep connection to her roots and ancestral land, and offering a candid account of facing prejudice, this book charts the life and work of a (now acclaimed) writer, from her childhood to the present day.

During his career, Steve Braunias has been at the right place and the right time to herald shocking news. In his latest book, this well-known New Zealand Herald journalist and author shares twelve extraordinary true crime stories, all focused on people who have mysteriously disappeared.

GREAT DAME DIGS – AND PHIL’S IN! , when Politics may bore many people but set wheels politicians lent a helping hand to l Link, in motion for Auckland’s City Rai boring. (ironically) ‘boring’ was far from

The tunnels will play a vital role in the overall City Rail Link, ‘on track’ until (and in another way, after)

completion in late 2024. The link is expected to ease pressure on the beleaguered road network, which should be great news for local commuters who work in the city. Although the first 50 metres of tunnel at the Mt Eden site had already been mined, the TBM is now at work excavating the remainder of the 1.6km tunnel which will run under the motorway and connect with the CRL (City Rail Link) tunnels already constructed

from the Britomart Station. “When complete, the City Rail Link will transform rail travel in Tamaki Makaurau,” Mr Goff believes. “It will carry up to 54,000 people an hour, moving the equivalent capacity of three Auckland Harbour Bridges or 16 extra traffic lanes into and through the city at peak times.” Joined by another boring enthusiast, Transport Minister Michael Wood,

STRATEGY IMPERATIVE

SUCCESS COMES FROM PLANNING

FOR INVESTMENT PROGRESS MATT BUCKERIDGE from enable.me talks about the benefit of financial statergies for businesses.

At this time we are hearing one question over and over again: “what’s the best investment I can make right now?” It makes perfect sense, amid super-low interest rates, to chase better returns. But, that search often overlooks the place where you can make the biggest gains: your business’s financial strategy. Often small business owners, in particular, are immersed in, or overwhelmed by, the day-to-day running of the business. Ideas for working on a strategy to grow it and make it more profitable can be overwhelming. But a defined, measurable, overarching strategy will help you purposefully grow wealth and avoid the downfalls associated with doing things on the fly. Improving and growing a small business is a unique challenge, because the owners’ personal situation and financial trajectory is often inextricably tied to the business. The statistics show many small businesses are cashflow negative and many owners rely on their personal finances to manage business cashflow. That can work both ways – your personal situation can put pressure on the

business, just as the business can limit your personal progress. This is why making sustainable progress requires a strategy which optimises both. That’s where enable.me – financial strategy and coaching – can become your biggest asset. Our business coaches help to develop a strategy you’re invested in and which seeks to optimise and grow your business. They’ll help you measure what matters, identify quick tactical wins, plan for the future, and will hold your hand and hold you accountable. At the same time, our coaches can ensure your strategy also aligns with your personal goals; what you need to live a satisfying life and build personal wealth. Marrying both your personal and business aspirations provides an opportunity to maximise your progress. enable.me is currently offering a 90-minute initial consultation with business coach, Matt Buckeridge, for just $199. Matt brings 20 years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, as well as positivity, inspiration, and commitment to small business owners keen to grow their business. So, book now at www.enable.me – it just might be the best investment you make this year.

Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, LANE AND MELISSA DEN BRINK say the more information, the better the project.

Winter is here and how good does it feel to be doing winter sports again? The past couple of months have been extremely busy for us with new projects coming on, supply issues needing to be factored in, and a flow of new enquiries. One thing we have noticed about our more successful projects is that when we had more information up front, we had better results for our clients. This highlights how important the first conversation is and getting the details required before we come out to see you and your home. There’s three main questions which will help guide the conversation:

discuss what is working with the house and what isn’t. If you are thinking of open plan living we can see what walls can be removed and what can’t. It also helps us to decide whether a building consent is required – some work may need one and some won’t.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?

DO YOU HAVE A BUDGET IN MIND?

We might delve deep into this conversation so that when we visit your home we understand what you want and are well prepared with advice and timings. Life is busy, so we believe turning up for a site visit with relevant information and advice is best for everyone.

This question is really important and though people often feel nervous about the ‘budget talk’, it isn’t at all scary. Knowing what you can spend and are willing to spend, will enable us to provide the best advice and ideas to help you towards your dream.

DO YOU HAVE EXISTING HOUSE PLANS?

So, if you are thinking of having that first conversation, feel free to give the team a call (09) 9479533 or pop in and see us at 19 Manukau Road, Pukekohe.

Having existing house plans is a great starting point. We can

BANK OF

MUM AND DAD Are you considering helping your child buy a first home?

Partner, PENNY JONES from Wynyard Wood talks about the pros and cons of lending adult children money to buy a home. With Auckland house prices at an all-time high and far outstripping wage increases, it has never been more difficult to buy a first home. New LVR restrictions from March 1, 2021 require an owner-occupier to have a 20% deposit. With the Auckland median house price at $1,100,000, this means a deposit over $200,000. It is no wonder that many parents are keen to help if they can. So what is the best way to help? Gift — You can gift funds to your child. Banks prefer this as your child is not required to pay it back to you. Your child will prefer it as they are able to proceed independently. However, you will not be able to call back this gift if you need funds later in life. Loan — You can lend funds to your child. This has the advantage that you can call it up if you need it or if your child is experiencing difficulties in a relationship or business. This benefits both you and your child. However, banks do not like dealing

with another loan although they sometimes accept a loan with no interest payable, no security and only repayable on the sale of the property. Guarantee — You can use the equity in your home to guarantee a part of your child’s bank loan. This is good in that you are not parting with your savings. However, the bank’s lending criteria are getting stricter (difficult for retired parents) and you also risk being liable to the bank if your child defaults on the bank loan. Share ownership — You can buy a property together with your child. You will benefit from any capital gain made. You are, however, involved in their bank borrowing and would need a very clear agreement drawn up to cover how the arrangement will work including the ability to exit. So, there are many options to consider. What is essential is that you obtain good legal advice to work out the best option for you.

Bill has already made personal presentations in 57 countries. http://www.speakers.co.nz/our-speakers/allspeakers/bill-potter/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM Have you ever heard someone describe another person as... ‘not very interesting’? If you have, did you ask why? People would mostly would accept it as ‘fact’. If you ‘challenged’ this description I salute you, because everybody is ‘interesting’! So let’s start with the definition of... ‘interesting’. An interesting person is one who can arouse curiosity, capture and hold the attention of others’. Thazzal! I have often been asked, during my coaching and speaking career in 57 countries, how one could become ‘interesting’. I would smile and reply... ‘You already are. Congratulations!’ Just being alive makes you very interesting! So, let’s talk about you. If you ask yourself (well go on then)... ‘Am I interesting?, the answer is... ‘Yes you are!’ Is that cool? Cool. I never met anyone who wasn’t ‘interesting’. To make your future even better than you thought, commence your ‘interesting’ journey... immediately. Ask ‘Uncle Google’ to find some help under the heading, ‘How to be Interesting’. Now listen to Vanessa van Edwards at

www.scienceofpeople.com/ interesting/ OK. One more chance. Yes, every one deserves one more chance. Kapeesh! This website will give you some ‘content’ to use in any which way. It will ignite your Bud dy, ‘Brain’. No. Not Brian! Go look at www. allthatsinteresting.com/ amazing-facts In Part 2 it’s all about you. Yes it will be. Once you are ‘deliberately interesting’... a new world of opportunities opens up. If you don’t believe this, drink a glass of red wine, lie-down and mumble ‘I can do this!’... as you drift off to sleep. You will then wake up more interesting. Really! My newly upgraded international Course... LeaderSpeak©, is ready to go. It is for Achievers... who want to learn to lead and to inspire change, but who do not feel confident to do this yet. My Course is a ‘maverick’ experience, because I ‘do it differently’. Most Leader courses do not! If you’re courageous, you know what to do. Contact me. Cheers. Bill. duitdammit@gmail.com
