– a salon of principle

Over the past 22 years Alberts has earned a reputation in the Papakura and Franklin areas as the go-to salon for beautiful, wearable, memorable hair – the salon’s standing speaks for itself.

At the heart of the salon is the director stylist, Kevin Murphy session stylist and salon owner, Natasha Harris. Having worked on fashion shows for many years in Auckland and Melbourne, Natasha is pivotal to the success of her salon. However, Alberts is far from a being one-woman show.

Featuring a highly skilled and personable team of qualified creatives, who share the same commitment to their craft, they pride themselves on customer service and attention to detail in all aspects of hair and make-up.

Alberts is a registered Kevin Murphy Session Salon, and the team has undergone extensive training through the Kevin Murphy Academy. Constant education means that they apply the latest up to date hairdressing techniques, ensuring the mix of fashion, style, innovation, international techniques and environmental awareness will see clients returning time and time again.

Alberts is situated on the fringe of Pukekohe’s eclectic, effortlessly cool urban hub. You’ll find the salon upstairs at 2/23 Hall Street, Pukekohe.

“In keeping with our lovely, semirural environment, which enjoys all the benefits of vibrant Auckland city, I am proud that the salon, its products and the team all have an environmentally-friendly focus,” Natasha says.

“My quest for sustainability, and ways to benefit the planet, has been a natural and gradual evolution – mostly small steps but also the occasional leap of faith over the past 20 plus years.”

In her over-riding desire to create beautiful, believable, memorable hair, without harmful ingredients, Natasha says Alberts is committed to being eco-friendly and therefore uses products which are sulphurfree, paraben-free and cruelty-free.

“As a sustainable salon, more than 90% of our waste is recycled and/ or repurposed. And, now, new 100% Ocean Waste Packaging, from Kevin Murphy, is the next progression clients will see coming through at Alberts.

“We expect our clients to benefit from every salon experience; to feel valued, inspired and beautiful and that they are making a useful contribution to the environment, too.”

with Vivo Skin Clinic NO WEDDING DAY WOES

We all dream of a perfect wedding day, and in the months leading up to it, hours and hours are spent ensuring every little detail is just right.

However, when it comes to our skin, the unpredictable nature of our complexion, and the added pressure of the biggest day of our lives, can sometimes take perfection out of our hands. Or, in this case, out of our skin.

Spotty, dull and stressed out skin is the last thing a bride wants when she is centre stage, At Vivo Skin Clinic, we can take back control of wedding day skin and ensure you’re truly glowing. You’ll treasure those wedding photo close ups even more!

Our Vivo skin therapists focus on advanced skin treatments and powerful skin products, to achieve genuine change. Unlike the use of cosmetic injectables, which treat the skin temporarily, our skin therapists will, instead, create a comprehensive Wedding Day Skin Plan to ensure your skin is looking fabulous long after the wedding cake is gone.

Whether it’s ageing, acne, rosacea and redness, fine lines, pigmentation or any one of a number of skin concerns, your skin can be visibly and significantly improved.

Stevie, star skin therapist at Vivo Skin Clinic Remuera, says, “a bridal programme would involve advanced treatments which focus on the texture of the skin, on evening skin tone, and on firming and brightening. Each programme is designed specifically for the skin I am working with.”

A home care programme which aligns with the skin will also be outlined, meaning improvement to skin on multiple levels.

“I would recommend around 6-12 treatments before the wedding, depending on the skin,” Stevie says.

“I normally recommend microdermabrasion to start, but once the skin has been properly prepared through the use of a home care programme which might include retinol, vitamin C and brightening serums.

“Home care is like a ‘diet’ for your skin; if you want results faster, you have to put in the right nutrients! Then I can start them on mild lactic peels, LED and, if there is scarring, needling sessions. This is extremely effective and makes a significant difference.”

Stevie also recommends epidermal blading for the big day. Why? “Blading removes that ‘peach fuzz’ hair we all have, and ensures makeup will sit beautifully and the camera won’t pick up on any of this velus hair.

Prosthodontist JOHN BELL talks about the role of chewing in maintaining oral health

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. Not having an attractive smile can be a real social disadvantage, and if you’re embarrassed about your teeth you won’t have a lot to smile about.

Broken or missing teeth, discoloured teeth and floppy dentures can all detract from a person’s appearance and make them self-conscious although, today, there are a variety of solutions which can restore smiles not to mention teeth!

But first things first – efficient chewing is essential for oral health and wellbeing. It’s the first step in the digestive process, whereby food is broken up before travelling down the alimentary canal.

Ill-fitting dentures often force the wearer to limit food choices, but a prosthodontic procedure, such as implants, can improve mouth comfort immensely as well as opening the door to a whole new era of dietary delights.

At our clinic a ceramist is responsible for the technical laboratory work for implant prostheses and all crowns and bridges.

However, while our team, which also includes practice manager, Anita Connelly, can perform wonders in repairing the ravages of time and dental damage, the emphasis should always be on disease prevention and preservation of teeth and their supporting structures – the gums and supporting bone.

Oral disease is preventable and manageable. The use of fluoride has had a huge impact on dental disease, but avoiding sugary foods, twice daily brushing and regular check-ups are still essential for keeping teeth and other oral tissues healthy.

Just like your car, regular maintenance keeps everything working efficiently and ensures any problems are dealt with early, before becoming unmanageable.

Dentistry may be expensive at times but neglect will cost much more in both pain and money. Ultimately, maintenance is a whole lot cheaper.

Footwear trends

An irresistible offering in rich, moody hues, Mikko’s decadent new Autumn Winter collection has just arrived and it is all the inspiration needed for the wintry months ahead – SOUTH magazine discussed leading trends for the upcoming season with Michaela Longstaff, founder and buyer of the family-run business.

What are the must-have colours in footwear this season?

Alongside the classic, cool weather colour palette, new styles in mustard yellow, army greens, ivory and pepper grey will add a little excitement to any outfit – ideal on cold mornings where a mood boost is certainly welcome.

We can’t go past a good pair of boots on a cold day, what are key winter trends for this wardrobe staple?

This season it is a real melange of new silhouettes and updated takes on the essentials – boots feature a number of interesting elements to refresh your wardrobe with minimal effort. Bold lace-up styles are here, along with stunning architectural heels. And, the trend not to miss is our nod to Western-style, square toes, buckles and two-toned toecaps. We have everything required to pull cool weather looks together.

How about casual footwear options – are sneakers still a must-have?

Sneakers have indeed reigned supreme over the past few years, and we do have some fantastic styles in store this season, but for 2020, its more elegant counterpart, the Parisian ballet flat has made a welcome return. No matter the outfit, it is a classic footwear staple which can transform any look with effortless polish – perfect for transseasonal dressing before winter truly sets in.

For those who love eye-catching detail, are there any key prints to look out for? This autumn we are loving animal print in various forms and applied on all silhouettes, from sneakers to boots and the aforementioned ballet flats. For those who love a little leopard print, there’s a style to suit every taste. In our eyes, it’s a natural!

How do you decide on what brands and styles to pick from each season?

I hand select and curate each collection with our customers in mind – as always at Mikko, fit and construction is just as integral as colour and shape. Comfort and quality are core values for us and for our valued customers. All of our footwear comes direct from a trusted group of artisanal European brands including Ara, Hogl and Hispanitas to name a few. Why do you focus on European brands?

Europe is the origin of shoemaking with a rich history of quality and excellent craftsmanship. The brands we choose are from family-owned businesses, just like us. While each brand has its own story, every pair of shoes we sell has four things in common: comfort, quality, style and value. Our Pukekohe store team has in-depth knowledge on every brand and each member is professionally trained on how to fit shoes properly – they are super lovely and very approachable!

Head into store to check out Mikko’s luxurious new collection of timeless, wearable classics with a twist. You’re sure to leave feeling inspired for the change of season ahead.
