While many dental practitioners were lamenting the dearth of patients attending emergency surgery during lockdown Alert Level 3 and 4, Dr Elena Artyukh was quietly celebrating.
The Howick dentist, who has been in the industry quarter of a century, believes it is the diligence shown by her patients over the years that meant none of them required emergency treatment during our strictest lockdown periods.
For Dr Artyukh, who has had operated a dental surgery in the heart of Howick for 15 years, it is the gold standard.
While all dental services at her practice Dentart are back to normal under current Alert Level 2 (with Alert Level 1 due to kick in this week), Dr Artyukh says the fact none of her patients required treatment in early lockdown is testimony to their treatment regimens.
“Our patients didn’t have any emergencies. It’s the gold standard. They have been making good choices all these years, they’ve listened to advice. Thank you. There were no horrible extractions or infections. They didn’t have to suffer and I didn’t work that hard,” she says.
“I congratulate them for their diligence.”
Onerous Level 4 rules meant that while she was on-call for emergencies, she also had to adhere to very strict PPE (personal protective equipment ) rules. For a dentist, the gear was very restrictive. “In full PPE gear it would have been extremely difficult to perform. I was very happy not having to work that way,” she says.
Now, apart from hand sanitisers and spacing with a very precise appointment set-up, the Dentart surgery in Howick Village is all go. Their code of practice means they are always geared up for surgery.
“At Level 2 we returned to full hours and are pretty much back to normal,” Dr Artyukh says.
“Patients are coming back for regular check-ups…we’ve just seen the value of that and it works.”
Dentart also utilises the latest in technology including a specialist X-ray unit and a CEREC PrimeScan system which eliminates the need for dental impressions and can create a restoration in a one-hour appointment.
The surgery also uses the lat est-generation AIRFLOW and PIEZON devices which provide the highest prophylaxis standard Guided Biofilm therapy making a clean and polish a breeze.
“Dentart is a combination of art and science, developing a relationship with each patient based on trust while looking after their dental health and appearance,” says Dr Artyukh.
“Prevention is always better than cure and good brushing habits and regular check-ups can do wonders for your teeth.” Dentart – The Art of Dentistry Phone 534 2614 16 Selwyn Road, Howick www.dentart.co.nz

BUSINESS Well known local cobblers close doors
By JIM BIRCHALL H owick Heel and Sole bar on Moore Street is closing its doors after 32 years. The lease is up and owner Hans Ankersmit has chosen not to renew.
Original owner Hans bought back the business from his father Gerard in 2010, after initially opening in 1988.
The store’s previous incarnation was as a wool shop but over the years established itself as the go-to place in Howick to get a key cut or your shoes repaired.
Hans says he is “very appreciative of support of local people over the last 32 years” and says he and other employees always “prided ourselves on doing things to the best of our ability”.
He added he would miss most the ‘bond formed with clientele”, many of

whom were from multiple generations of the same families.
Local Howick identity and Howick Heel employee Mike Rowse is also leaving the job he has been in for 28 years. Rowse, who also runs volunteer-run station East FM, says he will be taking the next week to assess his options, then look towards the future.
Rowse says both he and Hans have been humbled by messages of support on a local business page and the sentiment “brought a tear to the eye for sure”.
The business is one of a number of local casualties post-Covid19.
Tamariki dairy on Cook Street closed their doors on May 31 as did Ginger Indian Restaurant in Moore Street while Howick Office Supplies on Cook Street has closed its shopfront but is still operating online.
