Cicadas sing for love
Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension
When it comes to the music everyone’s talking about from Denver to Wyoming, the summer’s hottest concert is creating quite a buzz. Rich with chirps enhanced by reverb, the songs of summer are in full swing. Cicadas are out in force this year, singing a chorus of shrill sound as the day turns to dusk. Reminiscent of a Midwestern summer, the trills and hums from tree and shrub are thrilling if you’re a fan of insect romance. Though 26 species call Colorado home, two are headlining the stage in the area calling out for ladies and love. Dog Day cicada (Tibicen spp.) males are well known rock stars advertising their appeal. Resting on branches, occasionally sucking sap from twigs, the males sing by vibrating drum-like organs called tymbals. Because no concert is superb without ear-splitting volume, cicadas come equipped with their own echo chambers made from a membrane covered, air filled pouch in their abdomens. Amplifying the thrumming of tymbals, these pouches ensure the buzzsaw love songs carry over long dis-
tances. Other cicadas take an acoustic approach. Putnam’s cicada (Platypedia putnami) croon by clicking their wings together, making a sound much like the tapping of coins. (Not that I’m advocating luring love by offering money. That’s wrong and illegal in many states). Sing along with the Putnam’s song by taking a pair of dimes into the evening, clicking in time to their beat. Softly alluring, the call wins ladies’ hearts. If a few enthusiastic females follow you about, attempting to cling to your clothes with their tiny claws, treat them gently. The females aren’t so easily fooled that larger coins impress them; dimes are the right size for mimicking this insect. The females pass judgment on males by the quality of their song; if one bug has a tune that’s just right, other males sing in synchrony with it. Dancing in place, the males rarely move their feet; instead they bop along to the tune with their abdomens. The female is left to find the one that’s right for her. Once she does, love blooms, after which the females
lay their eggs in twigs and small tree branches. The young that come from this union – pale and hunch-backed, with stout forelegs for digging (in short, every parent’s dream) – drop to the ground upon hatching. Burrowing into the soil, they spend two to five years underground, feeding on roots of various trees and shrubs. Grown up and ready for adulthood, the nymphs emerge from their underground lair. Crawling up a nearby plant, they molt, splitting the nymphal skin down their back and pulling free. They spend the next
four to six weeks singing their own music of love. Cicadas are often confused with locusts, but have a squat body with wide-set eyes and large, clear wings. Although they’re big and noisy – up to 2 inches long – they don’t cause much damage to plants in the landscape. Simple Designs Less-is-more decor gains in popularity By Jean Patteson The Orange County Register
Home decor is undergoing a subtle change, thanks to the weakened economy and the trend toward smaller but better-quality homes. As houses are downsized, homeowners are forced to make do with less space and fewer possessions, says Jose J. Cabrera, of C&L Studio in Orlando, Fla. And in this uncertain economy, many homeowners are reluctant to spend lavishly on new furnishings. “Our clients want fewer things, but really good things,” he said. “It’s a less-is-more approach.” Another sign of tough economic times impacting interior-design trends: Homeowners are reluctant to throw out all their old furnishings and start from scratch when they build or remodel, the way they did a decade ago, Cabrera says. “Old things are mixed with new and many styles are being brought together in an eclectic way,” Cabrera says. “The new decor doesn’t evoke any particular period. It’s more a matter of bringing the past into the present and making it fresh with new colors, accessories and art work.” Over the last few years, homeowners have been scaling back and simplifying their homes, says Troy Beasley, of Beasley & Henley Interior Design in Winter Park, Fla. “Instead of buying large new homes, they’re staying in their mid-sized homes and either remodeling totally or maybe just moving a wall or two and upgrading the interiors,” he says. Most people have traditional elements in their homes, Beasley
says. These may be heirloom pieces that have been passed down from generation to generation. Or simply the good dining-room or bedroom set a couple bought when they were first married. Either way, they want to keep those traditional elements while modernizing the look of their home. The design challenge, he says, is to figure out how to create uniformity and harmony while blending traditional and modern elements. His suggestions: Update formal, traditional chairs and sofas by adding casual slipcovers or reupholstering in contemporary fabrics. Change the wallpaper, light fixtures and moldings. Reframe art work. Show off collectibles all in one spot. “People want the less-cluttered, cleaner look they see in magazines,” Beasley says. The lighter, cleaner look is well suited to Florida’s subtropical climate and casual lifestyle, Cabrera says. Even owners of Mediterranean-inspired homes are moving away from the dark, heavy, ornate interiors typical of the style. Instead of warm and cozy, they want cool and airy. For one such home in Maitland, Fla., he was faced with the challenge of combining traditional furniture with modern artwork, while creating an overall look that was lighter and less cluttered. He started by lightening the colors of the walls and carpeting, using subtle shades of off-white, beige, gold and olive. In the living room, he added an antique mirrored coffee table, and placed two simple Asian vases in bright turquoise on the mantle over the sleek, white-stone fireplace. “The vases really stand out,” he says. “Using single items, even inexpensive ones, creates a gallery effect – it makes them look higher-quality.” In the dining room, the homeowners wanted to keep their heavy, Spanish-style table and captain’s chairs, and to use a large crystal chandelier they had been keeping in storage. Cabrera used off-white linen slip covers on the side chairs and had the end chairs upholstered in striped velvet. “It’s Mediterranean made modern,” Cabrera says. It also makes quite a design statement in a relatively small space – without spending a fortune on masses of new stuff.
Simplicity is key to the relaxed mood in this bedroom. The olive walls and persimmon draperies echo colors in the pillows. Right top to bottom: Bedroom seating area is a mix of old and new pieces. The bold mirror creates a focal point and opens up the room. Covers and contemporary upholstery fabrics update the traditional chairs in this Spanish-style dining set. A few carefully selected elements create a cleaner, more-updated look than a collection of clutter. (Courtesy LoriTurchinPhotography.com)

tate taxes are not wiped out when a property goes through foreclosure. If you are buying a foreclosure, you must know what can and will affect the title to the home you are buying. Finally, an REO property is a property that generally has gone through foreclosure and is now owned by the bank. You should treat an REO property in the same manner as a property owned by a seller, but you should make sure that all fees and expenses have been paid by the bank from the time they took title to the property through the date of your purchase. In addition, you’ll want to make sure that all real estate taxes are current on the home. Did you hire your own real estate attorney (not the one hired by your lender) to go over the details of your purchase and help negotiate? If you did, go back to him or her and have a discussion about this issue and find out what you need to do to resolve it. If you didn’t hire an attorney previously, you may need one now. Just know that if the taxes did not get paid and the lender in the foreclosure did not have an obligation to pay them, you are going to have to pay them. Ilyce R. Dear Helaine and Joe: I have enclosed a copy of a letter written by Robert E. Lee to his mother, plus Emily Ann Lee’s report card from the Miss Anable’s School, dated July 12, 1849, all of which have been in our family for years. I believe Emily Ann was Robert E. Lee’s sister. I have also enclosed some of Emily Ann’s drawings. A relative borrowed the letter written by Lee and returned it with the signature cut out. Robert E. Lee did write his name on the envelope. Do these have any value other than historical? – M.K.F.
32-152281
Dear M.K.F.: A handwritten letter signed by Civil War Gen. Robert Edward Lee is potentially valuable, indeed. The actual monetary value depends on the content of the letter and when it was written (during the Civil War is best). For example, a letter written by Lee just before Appomattox, musing about his upcoming meeting with Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, could be significantly valuable – both financially and historically. But just about any letter signed by Lee is worth $8,000 or more, and a Civil War example with good content can fetch in excess of $35,000. Unfortunately, Lee was known for writing rather dull missives home to his relatives, and this one, dated June 21, 1840, concerns travels and mentions such locations as Memphis, Tenn., and Jackson, Miss. It is a less-than-exciting letter, but if the famous, iconic Robert E. Lee wrote it, it’s still valuable. If written by someone else named Robert Lee, its value is modest. First of all, let us say that if this is indeed a Robert E. Lee letter, cutting off the
signature was an act of inexcusable vandalism. A genuine Lee signature alone is worth only about $3,000, which is not nearly as desirable as a signature attached to a letter as mentioned above. M.K.F. writes that Lee signed the envelope, but after careful comparison with known Robert E. Lee signatures, this does not appear to be his signature. The writing appears to be completely unlike anything that the real Robert E. Lee ever signed, but this notation may have been added later in another hand. We carefully checked the handwriting of Robert E. Lee, and while we cannot be absolutely certain using just a photocopy, we feel confident that Gen. Lee did not pen this letter himself. We also want to point out that this letter was addressed to someone in Alabama (Mrs. L. Lee), and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee did not write this letter to his long-deceased mother, Anne Hill Carter Lee (1773-1829). But what about the Emily Ann Lee report card and sketchbook? Was she indeed Gen. Lee’s sister? Unfortunately, once again, the answer is no. Robert E. Lee had two full sisters, one named Anne (1800-1864) and the other Catherine (1811-1856), plus a half sister named Lucy (1786-1860). There was no sister Emily Ann – and none of Lee’s female children had that name, either. That said, a specialist in the field should authenticate this letter and sketchbook. A hands-on second opinion is always in order, but we feel the value of this grouping is less than $150. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 18350, Knoxville, TN 37928. Cut out a one-half-inch-square floral photo and clip it to the stem or petal with the clothespin for extra charm and color. When you’ve finished a flowerpot for each guest, set it down at his or her place on the table. They make perfect party favors, too. Each one can sit on a guest’s windowsill or desk as a reminder of your fun evening together. You could even paint your guest’s name onto the terra-cotta pot itself.

into fixed-rate loans. “Everybody’s frightened about inflation, so if they have an adjustable loan, that’s the No. 1 reason they’re getting out of them,” says Jeff Lazerson, president of Mortgage Grader, a lender based in Laguna Niguel, Calif. “It’s not because you can get them at a better rate, but because you can get them at a stable rate.” Other borrowers swing from one hybrid ARM to another, says Matt Hackett, underwriting manager for Equity Now, a direct mortgage lender based in New York City. “We’ve done a few of those for people who were in a five-year ARM that they originated four years ago, that was getting ready to adjust,” Hackett says. Even though the rates were about to adjust downward, they got new 5/1 ARMs to extend low rates another five years. This isn’t, technically, a refi, but it’s close. Mortgage-free homeowners sometimes get mortgages to put cash in their pockets. “There’s a lot of people who don’t have a mortgage,” Hackett says. “Maybe they want to go to Florida, buy a second home with cash. So they cash out their first home and take the cash and go down there and don’t need a financing contingency, and they’re in a better position to bargain.”

Why refi? There are a number of reasons to refinance a mortgage. You probably can think of the first one – to get a lower mortgage rate. The average interest rate on an outstanding mortgage at the beginning of 2010 was 5.979 percent, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. However, lenders today are offering rates well below that benchmark, making a refinance a nobrainer for many. But low rates are not the only motive for refinancing a home loan nowadays. The following are good reasons to consider a new home loan. The No. 1 reason is to get a lower mortgage rate. Despite sinking rates, a lot of people haven’t refinanced. Many homeowners would like to refinance but can’t because they have little or no equity due to falling home values. Jim Sahnger, mortgage consultant for Palm Beach Financial Network in Stuart, Fla., says too many of his clients can’t refi for this reason. “But there are people who can, and some people who get so into whatever they’re doing that they don’t pay attention to the news and don’t pay attention to where rates are at,” Sahnger says. So Sahnger will call to tell them that rates are near record lows. Stability-hungry borrowers are ditching adjustable-rate mortgages and refinancing

Delve into earth-friendly products By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service
I still remember the glee I felt when I moved into my first apartment. After years of decorating and redecorating my childhood bedroom (and every other room Mom would let me get my hands on), I finally had a place of my own to trick up. To stretch my decorating dollars, I liked to hunt for finds at flea markets and antique malls. It was in these dusty gold mines that I fell hard for furnishings and accents made of wicker and bamboo. Today I’m still just as smitten by the organic lines, rustic texture and romantic grace of wicker and bamboo. And through the years, these natural wonders have become an integral part of the Nell Hill’s look. Here are some tips for incorporating these beautiful and Earthfriendly pieces into your home. Today’s wicker furnishings have come a long way from that crazy, creaky chair you had in your college dorm room. Now, wicker is not only sturdy, it’s incredibly chic. In fact, today’s wicker is so stylish it will be at home in every room of your house. Wicker is so neutral you can pick pillows in just about any style or hue, and it looks great. My favorite color combination right now is cream and brown jazzed up with an infusion of green, gold or orange. I like to pick a mix of fabrics that weave in a variety of patterns, such as buffalo checks, geometric shapes and images of nature, like palm leaves. If you’ve confined your wicker furniture to your back porch or patio up until now, why not invite it in when the weather gets cooler? Instead of storing your wicker chaise, sofa, chairs and ottoman in the garage or basement, work them
Keeping lawn care green Family Features
A thriving lawn is more than a soft, friendly playground. It can help cool the environment and clean the air. And it’s not hard to practice a little backyard environmentalism – here’s how it works and what you can do to take good care of your lawn.
The furniture industry is producing high-quality, stylish wicker that is tasteful in every room of the house. Accent the classic wicker with pillows that set off its organic beauty. (SHNS/Courtesy Nell Hill’s)
into your interior decor. If the seat cushions are a bit weatherworn, freshen them up with new slipcovers. Or, for a super-easy and inexpensive alternative, slip them into a king-sized pillowcase, tucking the open end underneath the cushion. Furniture made from sustainable materials like bamboo, rattan and wicker is hotter than ever right now. When I went to the huge High Point furniture market this year, it was clear that designers and furniture-makers are hearing our cry for home furnishings that are stylish and Earth-friendly. I was so impressed by the range of beautiful pieces available now that I ordered hutches, dressers, accent tables, desks and chairs made from bamboo and wicker. They have been flying out the door, going home with customers who are as mesmerized by the affordability and versatility of these beautiful pieces as I am.

Keeping It Cool Through its natural processes, grass releases water to stay cool, much the same way our bodies stay cool through perspiration. Water evaporating from your lawn absorbs excess heat to keep a constant cool temperature. Because your lawn stays cool, the air above it can be as much as 30 degrees cooler than it is above your driveway, patio or sidewalks.

If you’d like to experiment with including bamboo or wicker in your decor, start by adding just a piece or two. Put a bamboo end table in your living room. Ring your dining-room table with rattan chairs. Spice up your bedroom with a wicker chest of drawers. Store your china in a bamboo hutch. Or tuck a wicker bench at the foot of your bed. You can even put bamboo and wicker in unusual places. For instance, a few years ago, I bought a cute bamboo vanity for my downstairs powder room. After 20 years, I still love it – it hasn’t lost its beauty and is so neutral that I can put anything with it. Whether they are made from willow, wicker or bamboo, ecofriendly baskets are wonderful, too. Adapted from nellhillsblog.com, which can be linked from the nellhills.com home page. Cleaning the Air An average lawn has more than 11 million individual grass plants. These little green machines work 24/7 to trap dirt, dust and impurities from the air. And like all plants, grass absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, making it possible for us to breathe a little easier. How to Have a People and Earth-Friendly Lawn • Well-fed lawns are strong and vibrant. In general, feeding two to four times a year will build a lawn that is ready to stand up to weeds, heat, drought and insects. If your lawn doesn’t get much activity from the kids, pets or parties, two to three feedings is enough. Feeding a couple of times a year also applies if the spring and fall seasons where you live are only a few months long. If your grass is used for ball games or parties, you’ll want to feed three to four times a year so the grass can regenerate and withstand wear and tear. • Choose a fertilizer that says “for lawns” on the bag and has a spreader setting. • Set your mower to one of the highest cut settings to give your grass an advantage over heat, drought, weeds and bugs – and make lawn care simpler. • Mow and feed your lawn at the same time by leaving grass clippings on your lawn. • Sometimes when it’s hot and dry, the lawn will go dormant and turn brown. Don’t worry. • If you use your lawn as an extension of your living space, then your grass will let you know when it needs a drink.
