Style Single mom seeks a sophisticated living room

Candice Olson HGTV

By Candice Olson Home and Garden Television

Sylvia is a sophisticated young woman who juggles two big jobs: one as a busy lawyer and the other as a single mom to a 2-year-old named Chloe. She and her daughter recently moved from a small condo in the city to a great house in an older, well-established neighborhood. But with most of her time spent working or taking care of Chloe, Sylvia had little time to enjoy her new house, let alone any kind of social life. Because she could not go out most evenings, she wanted to enjoy some company at home after Chloe was asleep. But her living room, the one room where she could entertain friends, was bare and uninviting. The space lacked style and elegance, and the only spots of color came from Chloe’s toys. So I gathered together my crew and geared up to give Sylvia a fashionable and practical living room that would work as a modish place for adult guests, but still be comfortable for the little people, too. To brighten up the dull space, I chose a color palette of cool blues, vibrant golds, rich browns and bright whites. And I immediately punched up the color quotient in the room by painting the walls a gorgeous shade of teal, which is rich yet calming. I worked along the perimeter of the room to start. Along one wall, I installed a variety of store-bought white cabinets, which I customized with glass shelves, mirrored backs and interior lighting. These brighten up the room while adding handy storage space – closed storage for Chloe’s toys and open display shelves for Mom’s trinkets. Along the wall of cabinetry sat an unused fireplace, so I painted it white, installed a new gas insert for warmth and put up a beautiful screen – for ambience and safety. On the wall across from the fireplace, I installed even more cabinetry and found a perfect place for a television – low enough to watch but high enough so that little hands cannot

reach it. The wall between the two cabinet-filled walls contained a gorgeous bay window. For this window, I created drapes from a luxurious and feminine damask fabric with teal and gold tones. I also put up light-control blinds for privacy when needed. I went with some flirty and chic furniture that provides enough comfortable seating for entertaining in style: a teal three-seater sofa by the window, a few velvety-brown slipper chairs across from the sofa and a round, distressed-leather ottoman (no sharp corners for Chloe) in the middle. A brilliant crystal chandelier in the center of the room added much-needed bling. I also put in several sconces, puck lighting and various lamps to brighten up the space. After adding a few more accents and accessories – artwork, a cool rug, throw pillows and a few vases – the living room was complete. Before, this living room was only good for entertaining a toddler. By adding rich color, chic storage and sophisticated yet cozy furnishings, this room is now an elegant and relaxing room where Sylvia can entertain friends of any age. Now that’s divine. Landscape improvements increase local home value, resale odds Special to the Times-Call

a crowded and depressed real estate market, homeowners may be best served to undertake exterior home improvements like landscaping in order to increase the value of their homes and to help their property stand out to prospective buyers. A recent study in Lubbock, Texas, published in the Journal of Environmental Horticulture, evaluated 75 homes and concluded that every dollar invested in landscaping returns $1.35 – or a 35 percent return on investment. The same study found that having high-quality landscape compared to an average home increases the sales price of the home by 5.7 percent. This number jumped to a 10.8 percent increase in the value of a home when comparing an excellent quality landscape to an average landscape. Landscaping to increase a home’s value is not the only incentive for homeowners to spruce up their front yards. According to the Colorado Association of Realtors, curb appeal – how your house looks to people driving by or walking up to the front door – can be critical to getting your house sold. “Landscaping can make a significant difference in the appearance of a home and you don’t have to spend a fortune to make a yard beautiful,” says Amy Dorsey, president of the Colorado Association of Realtors. The importance of a home’s curb appeal is shared by Realtors, as well. “In my 20-plus years in the Colorado real estate market, I’ve seen that a good first impression can encourage a potential buyer to take a closer look and be more willing to overlook other negatives a property may have,” says Kathy Nelson, a broker associate with

Coldwell Banker. “Conversely, a bad first impression may be impossible to overcome no matter how attractive the inside of the house may be.” According to the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado, fall is an excellent time to spruce up beds with annual color, add perennial shrubs or plant trees (which can often be found at a discount this time of year) in your landscape. ALCC offers these simple, low-cost tips to increase a home’s curb appeal. • Spruce up the front porch and add fall color with attractive containers filled with mums or pansies. • Aerate and fertilize the lawn so it becomes healthy and eliminate all weeds. • Make sure plants are in proportion to the home, and not overgrown. In new subdivisions, an investment in trees and shrubs can make a home stand out. • Add more outdoor interest through fall/winter deals on decks, flagstone or patterned concrete patios, pergolas and retaining walls. These projects can be done whenever it’s dry and the ground is not frozen. • Plant spring-flowering bulbs like tulips and daffodils. With more than 700 members across the state, the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado is the premier professional organization for Colorado’s landscape contractors. ALCC has been at the forefront for more than 40 years helping Colorado’s landscape industry address Colorado’s unique climate, and promoting responsible use of water and other natural resources. ALCC member firms provide a range of landscape services including design, installation, maintenance, consultation and water management. Most of us cannot redo the closets in our homes, so we have to get creative to maximize the space. Here are ways to do that: • Use double-hanging sections and every inch of wall space for things like shoe and tie racks. Sometimes you can even utilize the inside of the closet door for extra storage.

Some reader queries had me staring at the ceiling, trying to determine which way the indoor wind blows. This followed a tip – from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Web site – that ceiling fans should be set to spin clockwise during summer months and reversed in winter. But wait: Hunter fans – among the best sellers at Home Depot – recommends just the opposite. “This was confusing to many people because the fan manufacturers don’t play by the clockwise/counterclockwise rule,” explains Karen Fields, co-owner of Fanman in Citrus Heights, Calif. “It’s about 50-50. It depends on the direction of the blade pitch as to which way the blades should spin.” Not all ceiling fans move air in the same direction. That pitch – the angle of the blades – makes all the difference. Some brands’ blades tip to the left, others to the right. The key is whether the air is moving up or down. “Fans should blow down in summer and up in winter,” says Fields, adding that it’s easy to check. “Many brands have a little switch on the motor that controls the fan direction. When the switch is up, the air blows up; (switch) down, it blows down.” How do you tell for sure? “Stand under the fan,” she continues. “When it’s blowing down, you should be able to feel it.” Regardless of pitch, the scores of ceiling fans in Fanman’s showroom spin in unison. Because of their energy-saving qualities, ceiling fans have enjoyed a boost in popularity. – Debbie Arrington

Help for mortgage scam victims By Marcie Geffner bankrate.com

Government agencies have issued repeated loud warnings about a nationwide epidemic of loan-modification and foreclosure-rescue scams. But homeowners haven’t heard these warnings and have fallen victim to especially clever scams. The sad fact is that homeowners who have become caught up in a scam generally have little recourse to recoup any money they may have paid and may find themselves worse off than they were before their unhappy encounter with a loan-modification or foreclosure-rescue company. Yet homeowners who have been victimized can still file formal complaints with government agencies and contact a housing counselor. “We encourage victims of both kinds of scams to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, their state attorney general and the Better Business Bureau, but this typically does more

for others who might become victims,” says Frank Dorman, an FTC spokesman. The FTC doesn’t resolve individual homeowner complaints, but such complaints help the agency to conduct investigations. Homeowners can file a complaint with the FTC through a complaint form on the agency’s Web site. The step-bystep form is cumbersome to complete but will guide the homeowner to include as much information as possible, so the agency can catalog, process and investigate the complaint. The FTC has not tracked the volume of loan-modification and foreclosurerescue scams but certainly has taken notice. The FTC, 23 state attorneys general and other agencies have set up a national law-enforcement effort, Operation Loan Lies, which targets companies that deceptively market loan-modification and foreclosure-rescue services. So far, the FTC has brought 14 lawsuits against individuals and companies

while federal and state agencies have taken action against 178. This effort to shut down illegal operations may be a cold comfort to homeowners who already have been victimized because even a successful enforcement action is unlikely to recover much of the victims’ money or unwind the ill effects of the scam. “Government-agency lawsuits sometimes result in court orders returning money to victims but not always, and often the scammers have either spent or hidden their ill-gotten assets and victims recover less than they lost, if anything,” Dorman says. Homeowners should report any scam or fraud to state authorities, as well as federal agencies, according to Scott Gerber, a spokesman at the California Office of the Attorney General. Homeowners can hire an attorney and bring a private civil lawsuit against the loan-modification or foreclosurerescue company. “Private lawsuits are a possible av-

enue to recoup losses, but legal fees obviously cut into anything you might get back,” Dorman says. Small-claims court may also be an option. Homeowners who fear they may have signed a deed to their home should contact the attorney general’s office and county recorder’s office, to verify whether the ownership of the home was transferred. Homeowners are well-advised to contact a local Better Business Bureau; these private organizations have a 70 percent success rate in business-to-consumer dispute resolution. The BBB doesn’t have legal enforcement authority, but will forward a complaint to the company and attempt to achieve a resolution, according to Alison Southwick, a spokeswoman at the Council of Better Business Bureaus in Arlington, Va. The easiest way to file a complaint is to locate the local BBB through the national council’s Web site and then use the online complaint form.

Davis hired Nancy Green, born a slave in Montgomery County, Ky., to be the living embodiment of Aunt Jemima. Many of these items can be valuable, and “mammy” cookie jars can bring more than $2,000

each. However, not mentioned in E.A.’s letter are the markings on this jar and teapot. These items could not have been found in an attic 30-some years ago since they were manufactured after 1990. The pieces should be valued at less than $100. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Winterize your windows for long-term payback Article Resource Association

You may not want to think about it, but winter will be here again before you know it. Of course, winter means heating bills. Wouldn’t it be great to take a big chunk out of energy costs not only this winter, but for many to come? In fact, you can save money while the weather is still warm because most of the same things you do to seal your home and save heat in winter can also help reduce cooling costs during the hot months. “There are a number of improvements homeowners can make today that will more than pay for themselves over time,” says Chris Pickering, vice president of marketing at Ply Gem windows. “With the 2009/2010 energy efficiency tax credits in full swing, now is an ideal time to make cost saving upgrades to the home.” Ply Gem, a leader in the building products industry, offers some helpful tips to prepare your home for the winter season and beyond. • Add insulation to your attic to reduce heat loss and drafts. • Install glass doors on fireplaces to reduce drafts and make sure your damper is working properly. • Clean vents and air ducts and replace filters to promote air flow and ease the strain on your heating and cooling system. • Drain a few gallons from your water heater to remove sediment and help it operate more efficiently. • Upgrade to insulated siding, like Mastic Home Exteriors by Ply Gem Structure EPS, to efficiently lower heating and cooling costs for the home by up to 25 percent. • Wrap your hot water pipes in insulation pre-formed for that purpose to reduce heat loss and ease the workload on your water heater. • Check around doors and windows and replace damaged caulk or weather-stripping. • Replace old single-pane windows with energy efficient, dual- or triple-pane models to reduce heat loss in winter and keep hot air out and cool air in during summer. “Windows are a particularly good place to save energy and money,” Pickering says. “Advancements in technology like Ply Gem’s Low-E coated glass limit heat loss or gain without reducing the amount of light that comes into a home. Other advancements like Argon fills between window panes have made windows more efficient than ever before and can be a major component in lowering utility bills.” Installing Energy Star-rated windows can save more than $450 per year in heating and cooling costs. Plus, with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, you can receive a tax credit for 30 percent of the purchase price of new energyefficient windows up to a maximum of $1,500. Window manufacturers are helping homeowners break down the benefits with Web tools like the one from Ply Gem. Do the math and you’ll find that new windows, along with these other energy saving tips, can pay off immediately and for years to come.

Skylights Fill your home with light Article Resource Association

When it comes to brightening and freshening your home, it’s smart to use natural light and passive ventilation. Unlike earlier plastic bubble skylights that faded and leaked, modern glass skylights are dependable and offer nearly endless options for functional decorating. According to Roger LeBrun, product certification engineer with VELUX America, today’s skylights, properly installed, don’t leak. “Matched flashing systems and other improvements have done away with the No. 1 fear of people who are considering cutting a hole in a perfectly good roof,” LeBrun says. Skylights are useful in all areas of the home but are particularly popular in bathrooms and kitchens. According to an American Standard survey, American homeowners say if they had a choice of accessories for the ultimate dream bathroom, the No. 1 option would be a skylight to bathe the room with more natural light. Add the privacy factor of light from above, plus the passive ventilation available with venting skylights, and you’ve dramatically upgraded one of the most used rooms in the home at a reasonable price. Aside from the aesthetic benefits of balanced natural light, there are health-related considerations. Studies show that 20 percent of our population suffers varying degrees of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Individuals with SAD may experience depression, lower energy, increased appetite and a need for more sleep. SAD is directly linked to insufficient daylight.

There are also other light-related health considerations, particularly for older adults. To accommodate the adaptation of the aging eye, the amount of light required for visual acuity doubles for each 13 years after the age of 20, according to research by Ross A. McFarland, Ph.D., and M. Bruce Fisher, Ph.D., in a Harvard School of Public Health publication. More natural light equals better sight, especially for seniors. Youngsters also benefit. Students perform significantly better in environments that are lit with natural rather than artificial light. A study directed by Heschong Mahone Group in California tracked test scores for 21,000 students in California, Colorado and Washington and found that learning rates were 26 percent higher in reading and 20 percent higher in math in rooms with the most natural light. Low-E energy-efficient glass in modern, Energy Star-qualified units, is durable, reduces external noises and won’t discolor as did older plastic bubble skylights.

And skylights no longer just sit there. Light and heat gain or loss through skylights can be controlled as never before. Electric venting models are available with remote control, blinds, shades, awnings, insect screening and automatic rain sensors. For simple, quick installation in areas where traditional skylights may not be the best solution, VELUX Sun Tunnel tubular skylights may be the answer. They admit passive light through highly reflective rigid or flexible tubing to go around obstructions between the roof and ceiling and provide abundant natural light through diffusers for hallways, bathrooms, pantries, walk-in closets or other smaller, confined areas. For free information on the benefits of natural light and skylight selection, or for free house plans incorporating skylights, call 800283-2831 or visit veluxusa.com. For government information on window and skylight energy efficiency, visit energystar.gov, and for independent agency information visit nfrc.org or efficientwindows.org.

Home Decor

By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service

Growing up in The Most Haunted Town in Kansas, I’ve heard my share of ghost stories. Whether it’s the tale of the drowned woman who calls to men from her watery grave in the Missouri River or Molly, who lets out blood-curdling screams in the park at midnight, the spooks that call Atchison home are legendary. And they scare the socks off me. But even though I am the world’s biggest chicken, I can’t resist the fun of throwing a Halloween soiree at my historic home, dressing it up so it looks like a haunted Victorian mansion. Why not join in the fun and throw a sensationally sinister dinner party of your own?

Set the Stage From the moment guests approach your front door, let them know they are in for a spine-tingling good time. Line your walkway and flank your door with lanterns filled with flickering, batteryoperated candles. Surround the lanterns with clusters of leering jack-o-lanterns or ghoulish green pumpkins. Frightful Foyer I love to serve drinks and appetizers

11

Twinny Peach wins award

in my foyer so guests have a chance to congregate before being ushered into the dining room. To turn your entry into a spooky reception area, pull in a table set with crystal decanters holding spirits, or create a witches’ brew in an elegant punch bowl. To shroud the room in a mysterious mist, add dry ice. Fill tarnished silver trays with dark and sinister-looking appetizers, such as plumbs, blackberries, black grapes and figs. If you want to get really icky, put fake vermin like rubber bugs, snakes or a rat around the serving platter.

Dreadful Dining Room Bring out the silver, crystal and china, and set the most opulent table you can imagine. Then creep it up with a few terrifying touches. Cover your candelabra with webs made of cheesecloth or scrim. Roost bats in your chandelier. Fill flower vases with blackened hydrangeas and carnations. Slip wart-covered rubber toads in guests’ water goblets. Put rubber bugs on dinner plates. The goal is for your tablescape to tell the story of a beautiful dinner party that was mysteriously interrupted, and no one was left to tell the tale of unspeakable horror.

Who took the snap out of Snapdragon? Twinny Peach, the AAS Winner, is a snapdragon without the snap. Why? Because it is a double or butterfly flower form that does not have the jaws or joints to snap. The double flower form is the origin for the name Twinny or twins. Another unique quality is the blend of peach tone colors. The soft shades of peach, yellow and light orange are distinct, and no other snapdragon offers this range of colors. Match Twinny Peach with blue tones of Salvia farinacea or purple foliage plants and your garden will be a knockout. In the full sun garden, Twinny Peach will produce abundant flower spikes, plenty to cut and place in vases for fresh indoor bouquets.

AAS Winner Data • Genus species: Antirrhinum majus • Common name: Snapdragon • Unique qualities: First double flowered snapdragon with compact

habit. Unique color. • Flower size: 1.25 inches • Flower form: Butterfly • Flower color: Pastel shades of peach, yellow and light orange • Plant Height, Width: 11.75, 7.75 inches

• Garden Spacing: 6 inches apart • Length of time from sowing seed to flower: 70 to 84 days • Closest comparisons on market: Bells Yellow, Floral Showers Apricot Bicolor
