Is a tour to Africa on your mind for 2025?
As our summer comes to end in North America, we are ready to book tours for the early parts of the new year.
January and February in our areas are the depth of winter and many people are planning their escapes early.
NOW is the best time to plan your tour to Africa if you want to have the best selections for the best areas from January to June 2025. Read below what months and areas to consider when planning
your tour, and let us help you with your travel plans:
JANUARY/FEBRUARY:
After some rain occurred in the Serengeti in Tanzania , we are now entering the short dry season in East Africa. The Great Migration will make its way or has already arrived in the southern part of the Serengeti and the Ndutu Conservation area in the second half of the month. Some of the female Wildebeest are heavily pregnant by now, and they will
Experience Zimbabwe
Take the trip of a lifetime with our all inclusive tour to the Hwange National Park.
Only $6557 USD pp / 10 days - min. 2 travellers
*Flexible dates for travel from January to the end of March
** Ideal for friends traveling together, or generational travel, or small group
Hightlights:
• 10 days / 9 nights in Zimbabwe, additional days optional
• Safaris in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, including “Little Serengeti”
• Rhinos walk in the IMVELO Rhino Sanctuary
• Village / School Visit
• 2 Full Days of activities in the Victoria Falls area - guided Tour of the Falls, Elephant Encounter, and Sunset Cruise
will teem with plains game, mainly zebras and wildebeest (just like in the Serengeti) who congregate here and give birth. Predators should not be far away!
The Victoria Falls present themselves in their full beauty. Water levels will be high, temperatures will be pleasant, however, you will want to pack a rain jacket as some rainy days should be expected.
Safari in Botswana is less exciting in January and February but will pick up signi cantly from mid-March onwards.
MARCH / APRIL:
start dropping their babies in the Ndutu area. The early weeks of February have most of the plains animals in birthing mode, and predators sure know to take advantage of this.
If you nd yourself in the Masai Mara in Kenya , you will enjoy the areas with fewer tourists as the Great Migration will NOT be here. Plains game also gives birth here, predator action would be more common than in the other months.
Gorilla and Chimp trekking will also be great, as Rwanda and Uganda also experience a short dry period at this time.
The tropical islands (Zanzibar, Pemba, and Ma a Island) are hot and sunny, and the oceans are clear making it a great time to go snorkeling and diving.
In Southern Africa , the rains have settled in and it is low season. Very few tourists will make it down here now, some areas are closed due to the rainfall.
However, there are some areas where you can take advantage of the low crowds and low pricing that come in the low season and still have a great safari. The Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is one such area and can be visited in these months, until late March. Temperatures will be warm to hot (high 20’s to mid 30’s C), plains game will give birth here, too, predator action should be more common during this time. The area known as the Little Serengeti
and the colder temperatures make shrubs and trees shed their leaves. Safari will be wonderful as we are not quite yet in the high season, prices are mostly still at shoulder season levels and tourist numbers are low.
Some seasonal camps in Zambia and Zimbabwe that close during the rain are now reopening, and walking safaris are possible in some spots here.
East Africa is still in the rainy season, but the rains will subside by the end of the month and better days are ahead!
JUNE:
As the rain settles in the plains of East Africa , Southern Africa moves towards the end of the rainy season. March is shoulder season in East Africa as the early month can still be pleasant for travel, April is low season as the long rains will have started by now. Birding is spectacular during these months, and wildlife action will also be plentiful. If you do decide to visit here during these months, you can take advantage of low pricing, and low crowds but prepare for rainy days.
Going to Southern Africa in late March and April can be very rewarding as prices are still low, numbers of tourists are low as well and wildlife action will be plenty. Botswana’s Okavango Delta will be much more affordable in these months and safari there is beautiful.
As the hot and rainy summer months come to an end, days are cooler and pleasant in late March and April. The foliage will still be relatively dense but the expert guides know where to nd the animals and will get you into great positions for spectacular photography.
MAY:
May is an excellent month to go on safari in Southern Africa Rains will now have largely stopped
June is the start of Africa’s best wildlife-viewing season. Winter is setting in in Southern Africa with cooler temperatures, and sparse foliage making it great for wildlife viewing with still low crowds. The change to the cooler air makes for mystical misty mornings on the plains of Africa - a very special time indeed!
Drier weather and ongoing moderate temperatures will start now in East Africa . Since the high season has not yet started, you can expect fewer tourist vehicles. Some lodges are still in shoulder season pricing but most are now increasing their pricing to high season rates.
In our opinion, June is the best month to go on a safari!
Now you know what to expect for the early months in Africa.
Because pricing is relatively competitive during this time, more and more travelers give the low season some thought.
Don’t miss out and plan your tour to Africa NOW to experience Africa away from the crowds with as much authenticity as possible!

Why swimming is so good for your body
Engaging in fitness activities that are enjoyable can increase the liklihood that a person will remain committed to routine exercise. In addition to being fun, swimming is an exercise that benefits the entire body. It's also ideal for people of all ages, as the buoyancy of water reduces the strain on muscles and joints.
Healthline reports that an hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running, without all the impact to the bones and joints. Many people who commit to swimming each week may have no problem getting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week recommended by various health organizations. Here are some of the ways swimming is good for your body.
· Engages the entire body: Swimming works just about all the muscles of the body. Various swimming strokes can enable a person to focus on certain muscle groups, if desired.
· A thorough cardiovascular workout: Swimming increases heart rate without stressing the body. The fitness level can be customized and gradually built up so that one can increase strength and endurance.
· Reduces body fat: Swimming can help many people slim down. According to Harvard Medical school, a 155-pound person can
burn about 432 calories swimming versus about 266 calories walking at a moderate pace for the same duration of time. A 2021 study published in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation revealed that 16 weeks of swimming led to significant reductions in body fat and BMI among those studied.
· Improves heart health: Research has linked swimming to a reduction in blood pressure and additional benefits related to improved cardiovascular health.
· Enhances lung volume: Swimming involves deeper breathing and can strengthen the muscles involved with respiration, says Everyday Health.
· Improves quality of life: Older adults who swim may experience decreased rates of disability and improved quality of life. Swimming helps to improve or maintain bone health, particularly among postmenopausal women. Water-based exercise also is low-impact and builds strength.
· Improves mental health: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that swimming can improve mood in both men and women. Swimming may decrease anxiety, and exercise therapy in warm water can improve symptoms of depression.
These are just some of the health benefits associated with swimming.

Apple Introduces Hearing Aid Feature
There’s always a bit of a buzz when Apple releases a new product. People line up for hours, even days, to be the first to get their hands on the latest iPhone. On September 9th, Apple introduced what they’re calling an “all-in-one hearing health experience” with AirPods Pro 2. There has been talk about AirPod “Hearing Aid Mode” being in the works for the past year, so the audiologist and the tech geek in me were both keen to find out just what that would look (or sound) like. Although it’s not clear if Apple will offer Hearing Aid Mode in Canada at this time due to government regulations around medical devices, this is a summary of what we know so far: Apple’s hearing offering is focused on prevention, awareness, and assistance. They are aiming to achieve this through three features:
1. Hearing Protection – a well fit AirPod silicone ear tip can reduce the intensity of surrounding noise just like any earplug, and on top of that, the chip digitally reduces louder sounds before they reach the ear
2. Hearing Test – a current and compatible iPhone or iPad is used to determine the softest levels of a range of tones that can be heard
3. Hearing Aid Mode – for wearers with a mild to moderate loss, this feature boosts sounds in real time
based on their personalized hearing profile THIS IS ALL GOOD NEWS.
People often wait several years from the time they notice hearing issues to when they see an audiologist for a hearing evaluation. A quick test through your phone and your AirPods might be less intimidating, resulting in a reduction in this time lag. I haven’t got to play with this iPhone feature yet, but my hope is that it includes recommendations for when an audiologist or physician should be consulted. Only about 25% of people who could benefit from hearing aids currently wear them – typically those with a more significant hearing loss. These Apple devices are meant to appeal to the other 75%. We know from numerous studies that early identification and intervention results in the best long-term outcomes in the treatment of hearing loss. A technology giant like Apple normalizing the conversation around hearing protection and the treatment of hearing loss is a huge step in the right direction.
For a comprehensive hearing evaluation and to find out what options are currently available for preventing and treating hearing loss, give us a call at 778-426-4876.

It Hit Me Like a Hammer!
Q:Dr.
Crapo: Last week I saw my dentist. I didn’t have any particular problem but when he checked me out, he flat out told me I was going to lose my back teeth. He said they would get loose and then infected and need to come out. He said there were some irreversible signs of disease around several of them and they should be pulled now. He said I’d need to get gum surgery on some of the others and then I’d need to see the hygienist every two or three months so that I could slow the deterioration process down. It hit me like a hammer! I’ve always been a healthy guy, and my teeth have seemed pretty good. I’ve had some crowns and a bridge and some root canals, but I sure didn’t expect this. He also said that some of my teeth were getting loose but didn’t tell me if there was any way of stopping the problem from progressing. Is there? Am I just destined to lose my teeth? I don’t like to be a person that has a lot of fuss in his life. I see problems and get them fixed. That’s what I’d like to do with my teeth – find a solution and get it done. What are your thoughts?
A:Isaw a gentleman a few days ago that had similar issues. To him I said adults lose their teeth to gum and bone breakdown because of one of four factors, or a combination of them. First is genetics – “Mom and Dad lost their
teeth early and so did the brothers and sisters.” Second – plaque buildup leading to tartar, which leads to infection of the gums and bone around the teeth. Third –smoking. And fourth – clenching and grinding of teeth. What I haven’t said in regard to these four conditions is their relationship to the dynamics of the mouth.
When we chew our food, or unknowingly clench or grind our teeth, and these elements are present (bad genetics, plaque/ tartar, smoking, clenching/ grinding), there is greater stress on our teeth. To add insult to injury, when our teeth, jaws, joints, and muscles aren’t working in harmony, the disharmony creates additional forces which accelerate the disease process.
In situations like yours, almost always (when plaque control is good and smoking eliminated), by correcting the dynamics of the teeth, joints and muscles, we resolve most of the problems that you’re experiencing.
By properly balancing and aligning your teeth, the disease decelerates. In fact, I’m certain that your teeth will tighten up. Is there a fix? Yes - someone who not only examines comprehensively, but who treats comprehensively, should be able to give you that assurance.
If we can help, we’d like to. Call 778-410-2080 for a consultation.

Their Final Journey: A Pallbearers’ Role in the Funeral Service
When I was young, I remember reading the poem Footprints by Margaret Powers, which is still one of my favourite pieces of writing today. It impacted me greatly, particularly the part where the individual sees only one set of footprints in the sand. When you continue reading, we nd out they haven’t been abandoned, but rather had been carried during the lowest and most hopeless times in their life. This poem reminds me of the human connection we have for one another. To know that someone cares so deeply for you, they would bear some of the weight when

they are needed most. That’s special. It only seems tting, and in our nature, to want to provide that time-honoured tradition of carrying our dearly departed loved ones to their nal resting place.
Being asked to be a pallbearer for a family member or close friend who has died can be a very emotional yet meaningful experience. Being chosen is a clear sign that you are a trusted and valued individual who has played a signi cant role in the person’s life to be given this responsibility. You want to make sure it is done with the dignity and respect it requires. Possibly, you have participated as a pallbearer before or perhaps it is your rst time …maybe even your rst funeral. Rest assured, there will be a team of funeral professionals on-site to guide you and lead you in the process.
Including pallbearers in a service is a time-honoured tradition that should be considered even if a cremation is chosen as the nal disposition. We also see individuals chosen to carry the urn for a service, on its own or with 2 to 4 urn bearers using an urn arch. This is a beautiful way to enter and exit the chapel and the cemetery with an urn. There are no rules to who can perform the respectful duty. Even if someone is unable to carry to the casket or urn physically, perhaps due to a disability or being of a young or old age - they can still participate by walking beside the casket or urn as an honourary pallbearer. As our family members age, we are often faced with less family and friends available and it’s a good idea to have the conversation about who you would call upon, when the time comes, for you and your
family members. It is also okay for you to let important people in your life know, it would be something you would be available and honoured to do.
It is so impactful to watch a casket being carried. The weight that is being taken on is more than just the individual themself - it is also the love, the loss, the honour, the memories, and the realization of this being the nal journey, that will be taken together.
When we are at our most vulnerable and no longer have the ability to carry ourselves, what an amazing gift and duty we perform for our loved ones, ensuring they are carefully transported on that nal journey, by those who loved them most. Many times, it is those who once carried us as children, that we may one day be called upon to carry ourselves, and our two sets of footprints, will again become one.

Senior driving education vs assessment
Many geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer.
Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation.
It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving.
Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency.
This is not true.
They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because of the frailty brought on by
advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age.
Two presenters at a Driving School Association of the Americas conference made a very strong case that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America.
The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are:
• The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traf c, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens.
• The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without warning, and be hidden behind the inside lane of two lanes approaching, was also a factor.
For both seniors with slower reaction times and teens lack of experience, lack of scanning contributes to this crash.
• Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all.
Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen.
Joan Wallace Driving School offers a free seminar for seniors at 2 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month. To sign up, call 250-383-7483

TIPS to prevent pickleball injuries
Pickleball is thriving, and that's great news for those who love the game. Unfortunately, pickleball also has proven beneficial to orthopedic practices. A 2023 analysis from UBS estimated pickleball injuries could cost Americans nearly $400 million in 2023. Seniors are especially vulnerable to pickleball injuries, as a 2021 study published in the journal Injury Epidemiology found that 86 percent of emergency room visits related to pickleball injuries affected individuals 60 and older.
Injuries are a part of any sport, and pickleball is no different. Though there's no foolproof method to guarantee pickleball players don't get hurt playing the game they love, the following are some tips that can reduce injury risk.
EMBRACE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
Pickleball can be a great workout, and players can reduce their injury risk by embracing physical activity even when they are not playing. Leg exercises can help build lower body strength, but strength exercises that focus on the upper body also can reduce injury risk.
LOOSEN UP BEFORE PLAYING:
GEAR UP: Pickleball is a competitive sport, but there's a tendency among some players, particularly novices, to take a casual approach to the game. Veteran players may know better, but anyone new to the game should be sure to wear the appropriate gear when playing. Athletic shoes with ample traction can reduce the likelihood that players will slip or fall. The right racket also can reduce risk for elbow injuries. The sporting goods experts at Dick's Sporting Goods note that paddles should feature a light to medium weight, comfortable grip and a large sweet spot. The right paddle will be different for everyone, so novices are urged to speak to veteran players for advice on which paddle might be best for them.
Taking the court right after getting out of the car is a recipe for injury. Arrive five to 10 minutes before a game and use that time to loosen up. A short walk and some subsequent stretches can help players make sure their bodies are not too tight to play. Some brief warm-up exercises and stretching can reduce muscle tension and make the body less vulnerable to injury.
· HYDRATE BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER A GAME: The experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine note that water cushions the joints, which helps athletes maintain their flexibility. Flexibility can reduce injury risk, particularly in a sport like pickleball. A 2021 study noted that 60 percent of pickleball injuries are sprains, strains or fractures. Remaining flexible can reduce athletes' risk for sprains and strains. Johns Hopkins recommends adults consume between six and 12 ounces of water for every 20 minutes of sports play and to drink between 16 and 24 ounces afterward.
Pickleball is wildly popular, even though pickleball injuries are common. Players can embrace various strategies to reduce their injury risk.
