Entering their 71st year as a family-owned business, Jarret Sawyer is the 3rd generation owner of Sawyer Sewing Centre. Sawyers was established by Jarret’s grandparents, Marion and David Sawyer back in 1953. They began modestly by selling sewing machines out of the back of David’s Dry Cleaning delivery van while living in Qualicum Beach. In 1965 they moved to Victoria and established a small store on Fort St. Dean Sawyer joined his parents in business right out of school in 1969 and was owner operator since 1976.
“Jarret began with our company in the early 1990’s, initially working in the repair department and eventually through all of our various departments. Vessel Liquour Store
What defines a Vessel?
Primarily it’s a container of liquids. It’s also a ship that travels on exploratory adventures, bringing back treasures. And importantly, a vessel is a transmitter of information, a communicator, “a vessel of knowledge”. Vessel Liquor Store was founded to be these things. Since opening the doors in December 2015, Vessel has become Victoria’s hub for all things wine, beer, spirits, cider, and the conversation and culture surrounding them. The locallyowned, independent company was built around supporting
authentic products and producers, from our BC backyard and from around the globe. In 2022 they greatly expanded the footprint of the store, allowing for hundreds more listings, and the opportunity to share even more finds.
We’re fortunate to be tucked into a crossroads between Fairfield, Oak Bay, Fernwood, Rockland and Downtown. As such, Vessel welcomes and services a diverse and eclectic clientele. In addition to stocking the core products that their local neighbours rely on, Vessel’s tight team offers a complete selection of quality international
products, and strive to provide outstanding service and value to every customer from enthusiast to expert.
“General Manager Brent Muller is an encyclopedia of beverage, an excellent taster, and a skilled buyer. He’s responsible for our whole product selection, and the reason the store has unique products rarely seen elsewhere. His knowledge has been paramount in engaging both our team, and our customers.”
That tight team is a main reason for Vessel’s Victoria seat and success in such a short amount of time. “We opened the store to fill a niche in Victoria”,
Borland says. “We couldn’t find a place where people passionate about drinks culture could collaborate, learn and purchase interesting things at a fair price. We hire only people that share the passion, unpretentiously, for wine, beer, spirits and cider that we do.” All members of Vessel’s staff have achieved a minimum of Level Two in the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (provided by Vessel) and the company funds ongoing beverage education for staff. The arrangement is aided by The Cru’s Nest, the classroom above the store. Sharon McLean, Vessel’s Education Director and one of Canada’s leading
wine educators, oversees a busy schedule of classes in the spaces, from introductory beginner sessions through to certified professional accreditation.
In 2023, Vessel expanded provincially with the launch of an extensive new website and online store. In addition to personal deliveries within Victoria via their VesselVan, now customers from across BC can easily shop Vessel from home. Heading into their 10th year, with the same management team since preopening, it’s clear this Vessel of knowledge is a pillar of their community.

The first month of the year is always a refreshing new start. Try these three tried and true pieces of financial advice that can help set you up for a successful 2025, no matter what the economy throws your way.
Our first piece of advice: change the way you think about saving. A good first step is to switch from spend-then-save method to a save-then-spend system. So instead of using your pay cheque to buy all the things you want and saving what you may (or may not) have leftover, flip the pattern and set aside your savings before spending the remaining funds. Creating a budget, setting goals and automating your savings will also help you succeed.
The second piece of advice we have is: get the ball rolling on your investments. Make an appointment to meet with a Wealth Advisor and have them walk you through options that align with your goals. If you’re new to investing or just want a second opinion, an advisor can be a great
resource for getting you on the right track to your goals, and even help you set them. And if you receive any retirement or RRSP benefits from your employer that you’d like to supplement, review this as well, so your advisor can get the big picture.
If you’re ready to get started right away, great. If not, consider your meeting as an opportunity to explore your options and ask questions. And finally, set SMART New Year’s financial goals. You can increase your chances of success by basing them on the SMART acronym: S- Be specific. Instead of resolving to just “do better”, you might want to pick an area to work on, like your savings. M – Be measurable. A goal to “be a better saver in 2025” is hard to track, which means you can’t evaluate your progress. Like we said before, you might want to set a goal amount and a timeline for reaching your goal. A – Be achievable. While a challenging goal is okay, your resolution should be achievable
or else your frustration will make you quit. R – Be relevant. Make sure your goal is appropriate for your situation and needs.
For example, if you have debt from highinterest credit card, paying this off will be a more relevant goal than savings. T – Be timely. You’re more likely to succeed with a timed goal, like saving three months of living expenses by July 2025.
In addition, another great tip is to take advantage of the experts. That’s what we’re here for. At the end of the day, either you’ll leave that appointment feeling more confident or you’ll walk out with a little more financial knowledge.
