The story behind Whippletree Junction
T
he story goes that Whippletree was the creation of Randy Streit, with the help of his brother, Ernie, and a friend, Roger. In the late 60s and early 70s, he began taking parts of buildings from the Cowichan Valley and other island and mainland locations that were destined for demolition. They moved them to this location. The Wickertree was the first building — it came from Duncan’s old Chinatown. Wagon Wheel Antiques, newly remodelled into Veridis Plumbing, was an old fish cannery from Sooke. The Coffee Shack was a post office and bank from Cobble Hill. In the 1970s, Randy Streit stumbled upon a unique bar in Butte Montana within the St. Francis Saloon in the deserted old copper mining town. He dismantled the bar and brought it home to Canada. In order to find a home for the bar, he sold a plot of land
to Paul Watson with a promissory note requesting the buyer to build a structure specifically designed to accommodate the bar. Thus, the plans for Pioneer House came to life. The log-style building only serves to compliment the bar perfectly.
“In the late 60s and early 70s, he [Randy Streit] began taking parts of buildings from the Cowichan Valley and other island and mainland locations that were destined for demolition. They moved them to this location.
Whippletree Junction’s name was derived from the horse and buggy era when Whippletree was an important harness part to hitch up a horse and wagon. Whippletree Junction has had a number of shops come and go. The building that was once Whippletree Furniture was built as a foundry that operated for several years. Then it was a print shop, glassworks and a furniture repair shop. Other businesses located here varied from a pyramid power store (remember that!) to a tattoo parlour. There was a zoo located at Whippletree in the 1980s that brought international attention when a child was mauled by a tiger. There was a great fire when the auction burned down. In recent years, Whippletree has returned to its original vision of itself, with its collection of quirky and eclectic of shops and services. Located just outside Duncan, it’s worth the time to stop and explore this inspirational piece of history known as the Whippletree Junction.

unar Bloom Landscaping is a local business that specializes in eco-design, installation and maintenance of both urban and rural projects. Organic Master Gardener (OMG) Kurtis Howes says, “Our focus stems from the philosophy and principles of permaculture design as a reference point to incorporate ecologically-based gardening and landscaping into public and private spheres.” The methodology of permaculture is to use nature as a source of inspiration and a reference point to consciously work with the land and not against it. This leads to efficient, resilient, naturalized and self-sustaining ecosystems, with the potential to provide a large array of food, medicine, building materials, energy generation, water capture and storage for not only humans, but insects, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. “Within the framework of eco-design and permaculture, I encourage the installation and
usage of landscapes for medicinal and therapeutic purposes, such as simple Zen-like environments and/or medicinal plant-based gardens for people to benefit from. I enjoy guiding clients through the learning process about medicinal plants and fungi that can be grown in their own gardens, and those which can benefit their health. Many medicinal plants are drought resistant and produce beautiful flowers and require little maintenance once established.” “Lastly, I provide land development consultations to help people decide what to do with their property, be it barren and newly built upon or pre-established and vegetated, but needing adjustment or a development plan for new use. These ideas are based on client needs and dreams. If you have an idea about your property you would like to share, a landscape or development dream you would like realized and are interested in connecting regarding services, phone: 250-210-1705. lunarbloom.ca

Duncan Festivities

T
he clouds have parted and the heat is on — summer has arrived! This means we are closer than ever to our annual Downtown Duncan Day Festival, Saturday, July 13 — to celebrate all the things we love about our little town, right in the heart of the majestic Cowichan Valley. KICK-OFF CELEBRATION: ONE FRIDAY NIGHT
To kick off the celebrations, Downtown Duncan will host our first “One Friday Night” event on July 12. We’ve invited two amazing bands and some of our favourite local food and drink providers to feed, water and entertain you and your friends at a free concert in the City Square. Headlining the evening will be The New Groovement, hailing from Victoria. They bring a seamless blend of funk, hip-hop, soulful vocals and
clever MC-ing, all highlighted by an electrifying section of brass. This is a band you really have to see and hear to believe. They deliver an experience you won’t soon forget. Bringing on the funk will be The Funky Lowdown, featuring guitarist Kelly Fawcett, who, on top of bringing the hometown flavour, will return to the City Square later this summer to perform with The Beautiful Maladies — a tribute act to the music of Tom Waits in this year’s 39 Days of July, June 28 to Aug. 4. Food and bevvies will be available from Taco Revolution, Omnom Crepes, Hudson’s on First, Red Arrow Brewery, Stillhead Distillery, and Blue Grouse Winery. You have your pick of yummy eats, cold beverages and amazing music - all in one place. Festivities begin in the City Square at 5 p.m. and wrap up by 10 p.m. Entry is free, and drink tickets
are $7. Tell your friends, tell your mom, tell everyone on your street and in your office. Don’t miss out on this summer party event. DOWNTOWN DUNCAN DAY
Next up event will be on Saturday, July 13, where our cozy Downtown core will be closed off to cars as we welcome thousands of patrons from Duncan and the surrounding communities to come experience a full day of fun in the sun. It all begins at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, because who doesn’t love pancakes? Then, the annual Grande Parade will wind its way through town, featuring dozens of dazzling and creative floats. As you make your way through the streets, you will find exclusive deals at all of your favourite local boutiques and shops. Check out the motorcycle show and shine after you grab a snack or refreshing drink from one of the many fantastic vendors. For the little
