Though it seems the sun may have hidden itself away for now, that doesn’t mean the fun has ended. Make your way up to the Cowichan Valley this fall season and enjoy the generous offerings waiting to be experienced and enjoyed.

By Ian Locke, Executive Director Downtown Duncan BIA

A

s another eventful summer in the Warmland slides into a cool wet autumn, new and exciting things continue to appear on the horizon for our small town — in a big way. The Downtown Duncan Business Improvement Area (BIA) is in the process of helping a few businesses with façade improvement funding through one of its grant initiatives, while continuing to receive overwhelmingly positive responses to the eight television commercial campaigns it produced and aired on CTV Vancouver Island for local businesses this year. Stay tuned and keep an eye out, as there are four more amazing local shops still to be featured. This October, the Wild Wings Nature & Arts Festival will celebrate its 10th year of providing innovative opportunities to learn and appreciate the incredible natural beauty of the Cowichan and the world around us, in support of their conservation efforts of the Somenos Marsh area. Our connectedness to nature continues to be a rising

trend in thought processes — for people in the region, this can clearly be seen in the continued popularity of the Duncan Farmers Market, which takes over Duncan’s Downtown streets every Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There, you will find a great and delicious variety of locally grown produce and tasty treats from vendors, all while checking out the incredible works of local craftmakers, including some of the best award-winning wineries and distilleries in the region. Nature, arts, culture, shopping and cuisine — we’ve got it all. What are you waiting for? downtownduncan.ca

Chloë Angus:

SUMMER TO FALL TRANSITION

FASHION MOSAIC OF ANCIENT AND MODERN CULTURE

J

S

UST BECAUSE the days are growing

INCE BEFORE SHE CAN REMEMBER, Chloë Angus has held a deep appreciation for Indigenous art and culture. First Coastal Nations tribespeople were her neighbours during her formative years in the small fishing village of Egmont on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. When she moved to Vancouver, reverence for First Nation’s artistic traditions catalyzed into her namesake fashion brand — an elegant clothing line which celebrates the iconic beauty and power of their craft. “I had to share their art with the world,” she says. “I wanted to create a truly collaborative spirit — a platform upon which indigenous and non-indigenous people could agree together for more meaningful conversation and celebration.” Chloë worked with world renowned Haida artist Clarence Mills which “gave me an opportunity to delve into the world of art to learn how it works.” After a few years, she went back to school to study fashion design. “Another passion I’d always held,” she laughs. Once she graduated, she sought to marry her love of fashion with her uniquely West Coast design aesthetic in order to create an extraordinary clothing line for women. She succeeded. Collaborating with First Nations artists, she spearheaded a fusion of modern textiles and traditional motifs of celebrated Aboriginal artists to create the Spirit Collection — an iconic, stylish line for busy women who want to look and feel elegant. On a deeper level, her team of designers and collaborating artists helps facilitate a better understanding between Indigenous and non-indigenous cultures while celebrating First Nations art. Around the world, the unique Chloë Angus garments inspire pride in Canada’s mosaic of ancient and modern culture.

shorter doesn’t mean you have to rush to pack away your summer clothes. You can extend your summer basics and transition them into fall with just a few fashion adjustments. Layering is functional and fashion-forward. It’s the easiest way to create a multitude of looks. Dress up your shorter sweaters with a long-fitted bamboo C’est Moi tank peeking out the bottom. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours. For more warmth as the days grow cooler, layer a denim jacket or classic blazer over your light-weight tees, blouse or dress. Add a light hoodie or cardigan to give depth to your layers. Tights and leggings are a fun way to add colour and pattern to your outfit. Paired with a summer tunic and a light cotton sweater, both are the perfect compliment to add a little more coverage as the temperatures cool. Nothing finishes the top-tobottom look like footwear. Finish your look with boots of any height or funky sneakers. Footwear is an easy way to introduce a pop of colour without compromising your overall look. Build on your style by introducing colour and texture. Scarves, jewelry and purses all come together to complete your summer to fall transition. Your final tip for extending your summer basics into fall - ignore the “rules”. Don’t let the rules constrict you. Your style is as individual as you are. Call Tamara to make an appointment. She is your personal wardrobe specialist.

CHLOË ANGUS FALL LINE

PatrYka Designs in Mill Bay is delighted to feature the fall fashion lineup of this culturally iconic and gorgeous collection along with members of Chloë Angus’s team on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mark your calendars and join us! The 2019 fall lineup — a rich, smoky collection — Chloë says, “... was inspired by the Vancouver skyline’s 50 shades of grey.” “Plenty of grey undertones, smoky purple and beautiful vintage black burnout. It’s a little bit of Versace, a bit smoky, a bit sensual, and very much a representation of a powerful woman in a powerful time.”

Toe the Line on Race Day MUST-HAVE RACE DAY ITEMS

I

slanders are spoiled for choices when it comes to local running events. With the GoodLife Fitness Marathon just around the corner, the staff at Cowichan Valley Running are sharing their race-day must-haves that keep runners comfortable and smiling from start to finish. “My number-one thing is BodyGlide!” says Laura Shand, owner of Cowichan Valley Running. “No matter what the weather is, when you’re running longer distances, you will chafe in places you never knew existed. I slather BodyGlide anywhere and everywhere — especially under my bra straps and band, and all over my feet.” Staff member Sarah Cook recently turned to running after a shoulder injury cut her volleyball career short. When training for her first half-marathon, she found she was getting a lot of blisters on her long runs. Once she switched to Feetures! running socks, no more

blisters! Now she doesn’t run without them. “I can only choose one thing?” jokes Dusty Spiller, Cowichan Valley Running’s newest employee and pro-triathlete. “I’ve got three things I wouldn’t leave home without on race day: my On Cloudflows, a light-weight singlet, and sunglasses to hide my pain!” Their number one piece of advice? Don’t do anything new on race day. Experiment on your training runs and find your tried-and-true favourites. That goes for shoes, accessories, clothing and nutrition. Get your race kit ready the night before your event, and rest easy knowing you’re all set to toe the line on race morning. When you need training advice or help with choosing the best gear, pop in to Cowichan Valley Running and ask their friendly staff. They love hearing about your training experiences and look forward to sharing their knowledge with you. cowichanvalleyrunning.com

LINGERIE FALL FASHION TRENDS FOR 2019

L Hanky Panky Retro Thong: Summer Nights

ike everything in the fashion world, lingerie also has its trends. Here’s a look at our favourite fall fashion trends of 2019. Flaunt it: Straps are a reoccurring trend this fall, and are one of the easiest ways to incorporate lingerie into your everyday style. Perfectly pair with lower necklines for a fun and fierce look that can be easily dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Our staff pick for this strappy look is the Sachi bra from Elomi. Embrace the Lace: Heavy padding and stiff foam makes its way to the back burner, and in its place, beautiful lace and soft meshes emerge. These beautiful feminine bras create a softer natural look with gorgeous cut and sewn detail that

offer extra support and shaping. The Nicole See Thru Lace bra from Fit Fully Yours perfectly captures this look. Be Bold: Colour is the name of the game. If you’re tried of the same boring nudes and black its time to make a change. Blush, lavender and mints make for a fun alternative to the boring beige of yesterday, with dark purples, navys and greens being a perfect way to bring some colour to a darker look (even if your the only one who knows). The colour of the season just so happens to be green this year and we are loving the shade in the beautiful Pyramide bra from Chantelle. Not your Granny’s Underwear: For the longest time, anything high waisted was considered something only your grandmother would wear (people forget how amazingly

comfortable this style is!) Times have changed, and with today’s high waisted pants, continuing to stay around your underwear should work with them not against. Be it briefs or thongs, high waisted underwear now comes in a variety of fun and flirty styles including cheeky cut outs and stretch lace. Our favorite in high waisted comfort comes from Hanky Panky in their retro thong.
