ust like spring cleaning, spring cleansing is an effective way to transition into a new season feeling healthy, nourished and balanced. A cleanse gives your digestive system a reset, allowing your body to rid itself of harmful toxins stored in the colon and intestinal tract. Contrary to popular belief, a cleanse goes deeper than simply losing a couple pounds or making up for bad eating habits over the winter. It affects the entire functioning of the body. There are multiple layers to a cleanse, since the food we put into our bodies is only one aspect of our overall health. For a truly holistic approach to wellness, it’s important to cleanse several facets of our lives at this time of year such as the air we breathe, the water we drink and the products we use. Here is my five-step process to a holistic spring cleanse:

Step 4: Set yourself up for success

Step 1: Cleanse the air in your home During a cleanse, our bodies are extra sensitive, therefore, even the air we breathe can affect us. Research shows that air pollution can cause or exacerbate health conditions such as asthma and allergies. While we have less control over the outdoors, we can clean up the air in our homes. Start by eliminating artificial air fresheners, perfumes and chemical-based cleaners. Instead, try using essential oils to clean your home, or purchase an air purifier.

While I advocate cleansing to my patients in the spring, there are a few things you need to pay special attention to before, during and after your cleanse. Here are a few ways you can set yourself up for success: • Prepare your body: As tempting as it may be to enter a cleanse after one last indulgent night of pizza and beer, before and after your cleanse is just as important as the cleanse itself. This time period can influence how effectively your body can remove toxins, so it’s important to eliminate all fried and processed foods, refined flour and sugar, and alcohol at least a few days before and after your cleanse. • Rest: During a cleanse, it’s common for fatigue, brain fog, anxiety or sadness to come up. Make sure your prepare for these symptoms, and plan to spend more time on self-care during the cleansing period. It’s also a good idea to plan your cleanse at a time when you won’t be overly-stressed.

Honour where you’re at and the changes in your body by spending extra time resting, relaxing, sleeping and nurturing yourself to complete the cleanse feeling revitalized. • Stay active: While I don’t recommend over-exerting yourself, it’s a good idea to do some light exercise. If you have enough energy, try going for a 30-minute walk each day of your cleanse. Exercise stimulates lymphatic flow and blood circulation, and improves the function of your kidneys, digestive tract, lungs and liver, which are all responsible for processing and eliminating toxins. • Key Supplements: With the additional work on your detoxification organs, certain supplements may be useful such as milk thistle, dandelion, turmeric, probiotics, adequate fibre, B vitamins and vitamin C.

Step 5: Stick with organic Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the easier it will be to stick with it. Once you’ve completed your

cleanse, seek out sustainable ways to keep up a healthy lifestyle. While I recognize that eating organic is more expensive, it’s crucial to lessen your exposure to pesticides, chemicals and toxins post-cleanse. I recommend paying attention to what the Environmental Working Group refers to as the ‘Dirty Dozen,’ and purchasing the following organic items: apples, strawberries, grapes, celery, peaches, spinach, sweet bell peppers, nectarines, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, snap peas and potatoes. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the five-step process to a holistic cleanse, simply start with step one and move on when you feel ready. Every little bit counts, and it’s more important to work on sustainable diet and lifestyle changes than drastic calorie cutting and black and white rules. Do your research and visit your naturopathic doctor to create an action plan if you need guidance. Happy spring cleansing!

Step 2: Improve your quality of water Detoxification requires water, and without adequate hydration, toxins can’t properly be eliminated and may re-accumulate. However, not all water has the same quality. For example, there can be chlorine in city water, and even plastic leaching in bottled water. During a cleanse, I recommend drinking filtred water. We use a Berkey water filtre at home, but I also recommend the Santevia water filtre. I recommend drinking at least one to two litres of water daily to ensure a safe and effective detox. You can also drink herbal teas and cold-pressed juices depending on your cleanse, however, avoid excess caffeine as it can be taxing on the liver which is already working hard to detoxify your system.

Step 3: Sober up your skincare products Our skin absorbs everything we put on it, allowing chemicals to directly enter our bloodstream. During your cleanse, and ideally all the time, limit the products you use on your skin. Instead of using your store-bought moisturizer, try using coconut or olive oil instead, and going makeup-free, or purchase natural
