Ask The Dentist! by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS

Look Like Brad Pi Chew Like Superman Q: Sixteen years ago in Hungary, I had a very good dentist. He made me a bridge for my lower teeth when I had only six teeth le . It was made as one piece, starting on my very back teeth, then coming around and a aching to my eyeteeth and the teeth in front and right beside them. It has been very solid and still is but several weeks ago I saw a dentist and he gave me the bad news; three of the six teeth are badly decayed, so the bridge has to come out and something different put in. I don’t feel any pain and the bridge is still working, so I don’t know what my next step will be. I also have a full denture on the top, which I hate! I’m going back to see the dentist, but I thought I might ask for several ideas, so I understand my situation be er. When I was at the dentist recently, he took x-rays and said I might have to have a denture on the bo om because I’m going to lose the three teeth holding in the bridge – but I don’t want a denture. I’ve got a top denture and I want to get rid of it. I told him that and he said I could get implants for a bo om denture, but I don’t have enough bone for implants on top. I’d like someone to tell me there is a way to get teeth fi xed to my upper and lower, so I don’t have to take

anything out and something I could clean like my own teeth. Surely there’s an answer. A: There are many answers to restore good function to your mouth but if you’re looking for teeth that are fi xed to your jaw, you must look to implants. First, we’ll look at the upper jaw. Sometimes, in fact o en, individuals who’ve worn dentures for a good period of time (longer than 10 years), will find that there isn’t enough bone to place implants. However, most of the time these same people have sinuses that can be used in a very interesting way. In a common surgery (common in the last 20+ years), we are able to expose the inside of the sinuses and place bone in quantities enough so that in 6-8 months a person has hard bone suitable for implant placement and function. It is relatively easy to place 3-4 implants per side and then create a bridge that stays permanently in your mouth – one that cleans like natural teeth. For the lower jaw, anywhere from 6-8 implants will allow for bridge construction that will also stay in permanently and clean like your own teeth. The bonus is that you’ll never lose another tooth to decay and your functional strength of chewing will equal or exceed your natural teeth Look like Brad Pi , chew like Superman.

T

he time of year when plants heave a sigh of relief from summer’s intense sun and visibly show signs of wear and tear, le ing us know that they need a li le extra tending to right now and would love help transitioning into cooler temperatures. Your garden may also be in the throes of its last hurrah, producing ripe edibles or pre y petals, but secretly eager to downshi and get ready to be put to bed in the upcoming months. Plan for next spring including planting spring flowering bulbs now and figure out where you are going to plant your garlic in October. Water but don’t fertilize your shade loving plants like rhodos and camellias. Fertilize them during their active growth period in the spring. Deadhead flowers to keep them blooming but leave some to go to seed so the birds will have some tasty treats to nibble on in the fall and winter.

Harvest your edibles and clean up any ro ing fruit on the ground or le on the trees so as not to spread disease. Pick your herbs and dry or freeze them for use during the winter. Keep planting flowers. There are many flowers that love the cooler weather such as pansies and chrysanthemums. Plant a cool crop of vegetables such as beets, winter greens, snap peas, and brassicas. Mulch with straw, compost, or leaf mold to protect the soil and tender plants as well as adding nutrients back into the soil.

Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

B

ack in 2017 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US released a proposal to allow certain hearing aids to be sold over the counter (OTC) without a hearing evaluation or prescription. The purpose of the bill was to increase access and lower the cost of ge ing hearing help for adults who perceive they have a mild to moderate loss and have no medical issues compounding their hearing loss (ex. tinnitus, vertigo, ear pain, history of chemotherapy, sudden change in hearing, etc.). Last month, the FDA released its final language, sparking interest around the globe. Although there is no move toward OTC hearing aids in Canada at this time that

I’m aware of, I’ve received enough queries recently that I thought it was worth addressing. Many might assume the advent of OTC hearing aids will have hearing healthcare professionals quaking in their boots, when actually, in this audiologist’s opinion, that couldn’t be further from the truth. OTC hearing aids aren’t intended to replace prescribed hearing aids, but to encourage those who historically wouldn’t have sought treatment, to do so. Currently, only about 10% of individuals with a mild hearing loss wear hearing aids. Research tells us that even those with a mild untreated hearing loss are at increased risk for social

isolation, depression, early cognitive decline, falls and more. The sooner hearing aids are acquired, the be er. Audiology is about so much more than hearing aids.
