udiology is so much more than hearing aids. Most people think of an audiologist as someone who tests hearing and fits hearing aids. That’s part of the role, but there is so much more that an audiologist can do for you. Bri ani Trapp, Doctor of Audiology at Hear Inc., is trained to identify and treat hearing loss, tinnitus, processing disorders and vestibular (balance/dizziness) problems for people of all ages. Our holistic approach starts with a thorough diagnostic assessment. The auditory system can be compromised by something as simple as excess wax in the ear canal or as complex as a tumor on the nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. Based on the concerns an individual reports during the initial consultation, an appropriate test ba ery is determined and completed. These tests generally include basic audiometry (determining the so est levels of sound that can be detected), tympanometry (assessent of middle ear function), and speech discrimination (ability to recognize words). From there, more targeted tests are completed to assess each patient’s unique set of issues and recommendations are made for medical and/or audiological follow up. Audiological follow up may involve wax removal, hearing conservation, tinnitus management, vestibular therapy, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) therapy, or hearing aids. Tinnitus is ringing, buzzing, whistling, or other sounds in the ears without an external source. If tinnitus is disrupting sleep, affecting a person’s work and social life, or pu ing

them at risk of depression or anxiety, tinnitus therapy may be recommended. At Hear Inc. we use a program called Progressive Tinnitus Management, which was originally created for US military veterans returning from service with extreme noise exposure. We use our eyes, ears and brain to help maintain our balance. Damage or disease can cause disorders in this system leading to dizziness, nausea, vertigo, balance issues and lightheadedness. At Hear Inc. we use Videonystagmography (VNG) to identify what portion of the balance system is damaged, leading to more targeted treatment. APDs affect the way the brain interprets information the ear hears. If someone reports problems understanding speech, especially in complex environments, but their basic audiometric testing is normal, we will recommend a ba ery of tests to determine if an APD exists. If so, there are therapies that can be initiated, o en with very positive results. Call Hear Inc. at 778-351-1145 to schedule your evaluation with Bri ani Trapp, Doctor of Audiology.

ow is the time to plant garlic. Planting now gives it time to get established so that it has a head start in the spring. To plant, separate the individual cloves from the bulb and plant pointy end up about 1-2” deep and 4” from its neighbour in rich, well drained soil. Fertilize in the spring when the growth starts. Your garlic should be ready to harvest around the beginning of July. Once the tops begin to go brown, pull up the bulbs and allow to air dry. If dried properly before storage, the bulbs should last throughout the winter. Garlic is a perennial member of the onion family, Alliaceae, and is closely related to leeks,
onions, shallots, and chives. All parts of the garlic plant are edible, but the bulb is the most prized and useful in the kitchen. Garlic is one of the most universally accepted culinary ingredients, appreciated around the world for its pungent flavour and
its incredible versatility in complementing meat, vegetables, breads, and eggs. It is grown commercially all over the world, notably in China, where over 12 million tons are produced each year. Dig This - Sidney, 9813 Third St. Ph: 778-426-1998
